The shop was surprisingly large with multiple seating options making it perfect to bring family or friends here after dinner. Their ice cream tastes great! Creamy but not sickingly heavy/sweet. What I ordered vs. what I got. The advertised cake clearly showed two thick ice cream layers, but the actual cake barely had any of the bottom flavor at all -- just a thin coating. Pretty misleading and not worth it. Wish I had just gotten ice cream or gone somewhere else. read more

Wanted a late night snack, and stopped here before they closed. They have all the flavors, all the options, including frozen yogurt. The toppings all looked fresh, and the staff was nice. I ordered 2 scoops with marshmallow sauce (fluff), whipped cream & a cherry. The girl at the counter gave me 2 cherries without having to ask, and I was going to ask. The little considerate gestures that put a smile on your face. I don't typically indulge in sweets, so I was very pleased that they were open and ready for customers even around 9pm. I frequented J.P. Licks as a college student in Boston so I was excited to find out they were opening a location in Andover. Based on my experiences, however, this location does not live up to those in the Boston area. Part of that probably has to do with how new this store is, so hopefully they will improve over time. The employees are polite but often don't seem to know how to work the register. I have their app on my phone which is connected to my rewards card and can also be used to pay. Half the time the employees did not know how to scan the code on my phone and process the rewards/payment. I don't blame them at all though as they likely didn't receive sufficient training from management. J.P. Licks also roasts their own coffee and serves espresso drinks at their stores, which the employees seemed to be unaware of despite having a coffee menu. I ordered a caramel macchiato one time and the girl there did not seem to know how to make it and ended up getting my order wrong, but I chose to not say anything at the time. Again, I don't blame the employees, but rather the managers who are supposed to train them. Somewhat small seating area but at least it's not as cramped as the Harvard Square location. I usually take my orders to-go anyway. In short, I do like J.P. Licks, but there are several better ice cream places in the area that are not only of comparable quality, but give you more bang for your buck. That is one of the things the Merrimack Valley has going for it. read more

Went in this afternoon to spend some time with one of my sons after having lunch downtown. It was a slow time of day as expected but what an enjoyable time I had. The ice cream was good (Strawberry was my favorite) and the coffee was good as well. The space and energy was fantastic. We could have sat there for longer but had errands to run. Don't overlook this place as an option to sit back and enjoy coffee and a sweet treat (ice cream & some pastries (limited)). We looked at local artwork and loved the overhead lights. Try them. I wanted to update my review, as I had a very good experience this evening. My father in law wanted ice cream and made me go back. I'm glad I did as it was much better than prior visits. First off, the staff was AWESOME. There were a bunch of young men that were on the Friday night shift and they went out of their way to be kind and welcoming to myself and my father in law. Same sentiments as the others on here. This is obviously a big local chain by now, and some people swear by JP Licks. The ice cream in general is fine, though far my favorite in the Boston area. Mr Gelato a few blocks away is way better, and less expensive. JP licks coffee is super burnt tasting. And it's expensive for sure, as all their locations are getting (I live in Somerville, and the Davis Sq JP Licks looks like the same prices). But yeah, service-wise this place REALLY needs to get its act together. I've been a few times to grab a coffee when I was the only customer, and that should take no longer than 1-2 minutes tops. Last weekend I went to get a cold brew. One guy was helping someone out with ice cream, fine. A couple minutes later, a second guy saunters out, pours me my cold brew, and then says "the other guy will ring you up" and then disappears. Umm, you mean the guy who is already occupied with the only other customer in the place? What exactly are you going to do then, um can't YOU ring me up??? Licks' ice cream prices at their Andover, MA location on the same level as the price of beer at Fenway Park (one major difference being that you expect to get hosed and price gouged at Fenway Park). Service at J.P. Licks - Andover, on July 2, 2019, a sunny, warm day, was awful. Two staff for a long line of customers......and those two staff people had no sense of efficiency. For this level of service, and an OK product, you pay $6.00 for two scoops of ice cream? Ludicrous! I get the impression that the leadership of J.P. Licks' thinks that the downtown/business district of Andover, MA is Nantucket, with tourist destination prices; when last I looked, downtown Andover was about three miles from Lawrence, MA. read more

I went there today- I left with nothing as the employee with long blue hair totally ignored me. He was writing on an ice cream cake which he proceeded to angrily throw into the trash can as he must of messed up the lettering. He then stormed into the back room. I waited at the counter for 10 minutes before I said hi there! He snapped back - I am with a customer right now( the ice cream cake he threw away) I told him I would be making a complaint. Insanely overpriced. My wife, my son and I went to J.P. Licks in Andover and we got 3 small ice creams with nothing extra; no toppings, no free jewelry, no gold dust -- $18.00. When I got to the register and looked at the price I said "you must be mistaken" and I just got a stare. Handed the woman a $20.00 and said "won't be coming here again". The business model may be counting on credit card holding Phillips Academy kids dropping in. Anyway, there are better and less expensive ice cream places out there: Benson's in North Andover will give you a small for around 4 bucks (still high), but you'll have some to take home later it'll taste better too. read more

How did I miss that this place was coming to town? Within 15 minutes of finding out, I was standing at the register with a single scoop of Fruity Pebbles Milk ice cream in a waffle cone. Delightful. Never order an ice cream cake from here. They won't have any clue what to do if you discover the cake is made incorrectly...it will turn into a 3 day ordeal of trying to get someone on the phone that can help, and it will end with them saying you can only get a full refund if you physically return the rest of the ice cream cake to their store. The District Manager might even laugh at your suggestion that they do more training with their staff and get upset if you use the word "gaslight" to describe their employees denying things you said minutes earlier in a conversation (the question was "what is your name", which I asked after multiple people kept jumping on a the phone to yell at me and I couldn't keep anyone straight. They claimed I never asked anyone that and that question and that that person didn't tell me they wouldn't provide their name.). There is a reason the reviews of this location are so much lower than their other locations. From top to bottom they don't care about their customers and will literally tell you to get use to bad customer service because this is how the world works now and you should just be happy they are even open. read more

Growing up in the greater Boston area, I loved JP Licks and was pumped when I saw a store in Andover pop up! Quality ice cream with a plethora of flavors to choose from. I recently had two new flavors I hadn't heard of before - Ube and Pandan. Both delicious. All in all, I highly recommend JP Licks. As far as the prices are concerned, I'm not sure what the complaints are really. File under no good deed goes unpunished. Wife is home sick craving a "hot fudge sundae" I thought I'd surprise her. Stopped here- the counterperson looked at me like I had 3 heads when I asked for a "large hot fudge sundae with marshmallow instead of whipped cream, made with mint chocolate chip ice cream." He makes the sundae then informs me "We don't have lids".... Then proceeds to ring up a $10.38 sale. I hand him $15.00 (3 fives) and he hands me back $3.62. When I pointed out my change was $1.00 short, he had to break out a calculator and do the math out loud.... GRRRRRR!
