Ice cream is awesome, but it isn't cheap. Frappes knock you back over $6, which is too much. I love the Cow Card, which gives you a free ice cream after you spend a certain amount of money there. Not bad. This JP Licks is also awesome because they let Tufts students stand inside in the cold while they wait for the bus to take us back to campus. I have been to J.P. Licks a handful of times when in and around Boston. They make good ice cream but also great frozen yogurt, which is convenient to change it up sometimes. My favorite ice cream flavor is the Banana Oreo. I don't think I have ever seen it anywhere else! And for yogurt, I really enjoy the chocolate chip cookie. The flavors also always have the perfect ratio of ice cream to ingredients (cookies, candy, etc.)-very important when rating ice cream! Overall, J.P licks makes pretty good ice cream but my one complaint is that the sizes are small for the price you pay. I personally am not always up for getting a huge ice cream and appreciate that they offer the kiddie size but charging over $3 for it seems kind of unreasonable. I would recommend getting a small or larger and if you must get the kiddie, get it in a cone because they give you a little bit more. Also, the lines can be quite long but they tend to move pretty quickly so don't let that discourage you from going here! read more

All right, all right! Four stars for you JP Licks even though you're so damn pricey! I love frozen yogurt and the Yogurt X JP Licks sells is one of the best I've had. The texture is perfection -- like rubbing your cheek against velvet, no little icy nubs, no watery-ness, just pure smooth yum. The flavor is vibrant and complex -- the Black Currant X is seriously some good s*&%, and Raspberry X runs a superclose second. The line is always long but the staff in there don't mess around. I've been waiting behind twenty people and it still takes only 3 min to get served and pay. There's a great outdoor seating area adjacent to the store. It's great to get your ice cream/fro yo and head out to watch the crowds in Davis and enjoy the summer under the protection of many trees. There are tons of benches and tables too, seating for all. Just one gripe for JP -- why does it cost FOUR DOLLAS for a SMALL??!! Clearly this hasn't prohibited me from going but oh-emm-eff-gee if I get a topping that totals like $5! This is just ridiculous and bums me out b/c I'd be there more often otherwise. Gah! Love-hate-love. read more

Definitely a delicious stop to feed your sugar and fat craving. I stopped in today to gorge myself on some of the black raspberry ice cream. I ordered a small cup and was delighted by its bountiful size. I think I paid $3.25 (or maybe it was $3.75), who knows, all I know is it was worth the under $4 price I paid. Since I was there right at 11, there was no line (just a family of children getting cones). It was slightly irritating that one of the hipster scoopers was busy chatting on his cell phone while I waited to be served (perhaps he was conducting some sort of top secret business---doubtful). Reviewing this almost feels redundant because like, it's J.P. Licks, what are you even gonna say? Delicious ice cream, delicious toppings, always hits the spot. Their ice cream cakes are super-amazing and you should definitely get one for your next event that requires a cake (instead of a regular, non-ice cream cake). It does tend to get crowded, especially in the summer, but it's pretty much worth the wait. And yes, sometimes people are awful customers and take forever to decide what they want, thus slowing the process for everyone else, but that's not the staff's fault. This location tends to get more crowded, in my view, than the Harvard one, but I haven't noticed much of a different otherwise between them. The peanut butter cups topping seems to be extra-delicious here, way better than even something like Cold Stone which uses authentic Reese's cups or anything. (Also, why are you even thinking about Cold Stone when J.P. Licks exists?) read more

your average ice cream shop. i had raspberry sorbet and vanilla, though i'm fairly certain (don't ask me how) the guy accidentally gave me the regular vanilla ice cream instead of the "lactose free vanilla bean" flavor... in retrospect i heard him ask one of the other employees (who didn't have an answer for him, either - i should have known). though there are a few seats indoor, the best thing this place has going for it is it's location. right in davie's square, we took our ice creams and sat in the square, watching the performers and everybody else. a solid way to spend a summer's night. read more

I can't believe other JP Licks locations are on here, and not this one! Well, for those who live outside of Boston Proper and were worried that you couldn't get fabulous ice cream, no fear. An ice cream devotee, JP Licks has consistently been on the top of my list for years. The Davis Sq location is smaller(closet space) compared to the others, but boasts the same plethora of flavors, toppings, and ice cream cake selection. The service is also quicker; the line can be out the door and within 5 minutes you find yourself giving your order. They have the best oreo ice cream around, jampacked with cookie goodness. They also do variations, with coffee and mint oreo. Other highlights: cake batter, peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough, black raspberry, and irish mint lace. I like J.P. Licks, and the one on Davis Square is in my neighborhood. My second-to-favorite ice cream is oreo cakebatter (see below for my favorite). I only recently realized that they actually do good *coffee* as well! What really shocked me was when they discontinued my favorite ice cream flavor, which is Organic White Coffee. I stopped in the Davis Sq location recently and ordered a small cup of ice cream. The person helping me scooped what appeared to be the normal serving, weighed it, and then took 20% out of the cup. I was told, "This is the new policy..." when I commented. It got better. I realized that prices had also just been raised when I was rung up! I asked about the higher prices and the response was, "Well, we have cornered the market, so why not raise prices?" I did not expect such an honest response. You simultaneously raised prices AND reduced serving sizes? You just essentially did a 30% price increase... So the ice cream is good and staff are usually very friendly. I was just there however, ordered a medium coffee ice cream. I normally go to the assembly row store but I called ahead and this location still had my favorite discontinued chocolate chip cookie hard yogurt left. Of course I had to go and pig out on the last of it. I did not like this store as much as the assembly row store. It's small and modest looking. They had a few tables and stools. Parking was not easy to find. I had to park in the street and it was expensive. I went on a Monday afternoon and only one employee was serving and ringing so there was a bit of a line. However the quality of the yogurt and ice cream made up for it. I got a large with a few flavors in it and it was well worth the $6 I spent. The star of the bowl was chocolate chip cookie hard yogurt and cookies and cream hard yogurt. You can't go wrong with any of the cookies and cream flavors, they are all full of Oreos. Although Yelp is not the best forum for announcing this, I am posting this review as a warning for anyone with a food allergy thinking about coming here. While all of my experiences at this branch have been around 3 stars, one in particular was so horrible, it has kept me from visiting any JP Licks ever again. One evening, I stopped in to get some ice cream (as one does), and I asked if one of the flavors had an ingredient that I was allergic to. (Note, it was a flavor that normally wouldn't have this ingredient, but I always ask to be careful.) There were three servers, and the store was *empty*, but the woman who was "helping" me was obviously very annoyed that I was taking more than three seconds to make a decision. When I asked her about the ingredient, she rolled her eyes, stalked over to the big binder of ingredients, slammed it on the table, and made sighs of frustration while looking through it. After some time, she said the flavor didn't have the ingredient (not looking me in the eye -- I should have taken this as a warning sign), and I ordered a scoop. The man at the cashier was also rude, but I shrugged it off. There were little bits of something that looked like what I was allergic to in the ice cream, but when I started asking the man at the cashier, he looked away like he didn't hear me. I was so uncomfortable with the hostility that I was receiving, I pegged it up to paranoia and left the store. As I started eating the ice cream, however, I started feeling my throat getting itchy. I again just figured it was paranoia and shrugged it off. However, as I arrived at my destination, about 15 minutes later, I realized I was having a full-blown anaphylactic reaction. Fortunately, I had enough time to grab my epipen and go to a private room to use it, but if I didn't I would have been in a lot of danger. Even afterward, I ended up lying on a couch under supervision for the whole evening, recovering. One of my friends looked up the ingredients online, and what I was allergic to was very obviously and clearly stated as a main ingredient. I recognize that every time I order anything, I take a risk of cross-contamination, but trace amounts are not usually enough to be life-threatening, so I make that choice and take that responsibility on myself. However, this seemed to be either negligence or maliciousness -- neither of which is acceptable. In addition, the store refused to follow up when I contacted them later. That night, I called the store and explained the situation. The young woman on the phone was apologetic and offered me free ice cream (not the sort of thing you want to hear after a traumatic experience, but I appreciated the gesture); later I realized I called the wrong branch, and talked to the same woman again to explain. She offered to call the manager at the other branch the next morning and again apologized. However, the next evening, I called the correct branch, and discovered no one had called their manager; I didn't begrudge the other branch because it wasn't their responsibility, but I thought it was unprofessional that they offered and didn't follow through. In any case, the manager listened to my explanation, but offered no apologies or even sympathy. She then ended the conversation by saying, "I'll talk to the workers to hear their side of the story and follow up." Their side of the story? Why would I be making any of this up? In any case, I haven't heard from JP Licks since. I told both branches on the phone that I wasn't looking to get anyone punished, but I wanted to make sure that their employees took food allergies seriously. If I had eaten the ice cream at the store, for instance, I might not have been able to get to my epipen in time. This is an experience that I would not want anyone else to go through, and so I would say if you have a food allergy (or an aversion to extremely rude service), beware of this location. read more

Once upon a time there was a JP Licks in Arlington, and I loved it. Everyone who worked there was so cool. Now it's gone (replaced by Chilly Cow -- the ice cream is not as good, but plenty good enough and the people who work there are fabulous and it's a regular supporter of Arlington cultural events, schools, etc.) and so for my JP Licks fix it's Davis or Harvard Square. The Davis Square location just doesn't have a friendly feel. The ice cream is grand, but they are so inflexible about the rules of distribution and there's always a line and in general I guess I'm just not good enough to eat there. I have always been a huge fan of JP Licks. However, I have to say this summer's flavor selection was truly the best of the four years I have lived in Boston. The Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Chip is to DIE FOR. The ice cream is so creamy, it melts in your mouth with a burst of flavor. I can only hope it makes it onto the regular menu. And for those who complain about prices, I have to say: Get over it. It's entirely home made with as many local ingredients as possible, and the ice cream is delish! I am a loyal JP licks fan. I am also lactose intolerant. This speaks volumes about the quality of their (dairy free) sorbet. They rotate the 2 flavors every month and they are always fresh, funky, and high quality. My favorites are: sangria, pink grapefruit, and manischewitz. I usually get a sorbet freeze (blended with soda water) with both of the flavors of the month mixed together for maximum flavor. read more

My family loves to come here for a treat on a nice summer night we walk the bike path to Davis and I always get a yogurt x with granola and fruit and it is seriously one of the best frozen yogurts that has ever graced my palate! I went on a weekday (granted, it was the day of the marathon and really nice out) and there was a line out the door. I somehow got behind a group of three adults who had about fifty kids with them who couldn't decide what toppings they wanted. It was really obnoxious. When there's a long line, MAKE YOUR MIND UP AND GET MOVING. I got to the register to pay and the guy was super pissed. I don't blame him. I'd hate to work here. Oh, and I ordered strawberry banana sherbet and for some reason, it had blueberries in it. I like blueberries, but I was confused. Where in strawberry banana do blueberries come in? Very yummy ice-cream... I can't help stopping by whenever I am in Davis Square. The small cup ($3.30) is usually big enough for one person, but if you feel like overindulging the medium cup is only 60 cents extra. They carry most of the usual flavors... but beyond that the selection is a little limited, so a few more original flavors would be nice (I am getting tired of coffee and chocolate chip cookie dough). With another eight or so odd visits to JP Lick's under my belt, I've decided it's time for a re-review. Well, first of all the ice cream is still a solid reason to visit. The options are always fun ones and I like the fact that they rotate flavors in and out monthly. Recently they've been making an effort to expand into less traditional ice cream bases (coconut milk and hemp), which is nice to see. I also appreciate that mix-ins (oreo cookies, chocolate chunks, fruit, cookie dough pieces) are always in generous supply. After all, there's nothing sadder then realizing half way through your scoop of peanut butter cup ice cream that you apparently received only half a peanut butter cup. I've certainly liked all the flavors I've ordered (Kahlua brownie, various chocolate-peanut butter concoctions, coffee oreo, batter up, oreo cake batter, the list goes on...) but no one scoop stands out as having been particularly extraordinary. They've kept me coming back for more though, so that's definitely something! The toppings options are also very satisfactory: as with the ice cream flavors, they have a nice variation. As I mentioned in my first review, the hot fudge is seriously delicious (that's what stands out the most for me), as is the dark chocolate espresso bark. The cones are fine, if not particularly extraordinary... I tend to go with cups anyway, since I'm a hot fudge fan. They also serve frappes (shakes) and coffee, though I've never actually tried either--at the end of the day, I come to JP Lick's pretty exclusively for my scoop (or two) of ice cream. Service is fine: the staff seems to change around a lot, but that's to be expected in an ice cream shop. I haven't been in any scary long lines (the longest was maybe six or so people out the door), but from my experience, they do move relatively quickly. I don't recommend sitting inside the shop: the music can be a bit over-the-top loud and the line tends to monopolize the space. There's lots of seating outdoors in the summer though, sot that's not really a big deal. Portions are generous (I've never dared order anything larger than a medium), although I still find the prices a touch high for what I've getting. Yes, everything is very good and clearly well-made, but it's still a bit of a shock to pay over ten bucks for two scoops of ice cream in a chocolate waffle cone and a kiddie cup of sherbert. read more
