Not the best ice cream in the city but probably the most popular. This is probably due to it's large and varied flavor selection and the whimsical and inviting decor of most of the shops. (The Davis location is small and not as decorated). The ice cream is all made locally at the original J.P. store. Lots of flavors, frozen yougurt, and a ton of toppings at reasonbale prices. Davis Square is the perfect place to hang out, listen to live music and enjoy an ice cream...especially a signature flavor by JP Licks. They do have some flavors that are always on the board, but I encourage you to be brave and try out something new. Maybe some 'Caramel Apple' or 'Negative Chip'? I really liked the fresh mojito sorbet, it was something I could eat. I have a dairy allergy, but I can always find something to eat here. the sorbets work really well in waffle cones, if you get a small or medium. read more

The ice cream is quite good but not very creamy or rich. It just tastes like an upscale store-bought ice cream, and it's so expensive! A small cup (1 scoop) is like $5! But the guy serving us today was very generous with his one scoop, so it was a reasonable size if not price. read more

Clean the scoops between serving customers, I ordered Apple Crisp and it tasted like coffee. Turn down the terrible music so customers don't have to shout to order, this is an ice cream shop, not a club. Don't give the customers attitude when they say they can't hear you over the music. And finally, if you run out of a basic ice cream shop staple like whipped cream, tell the customer that when they order their sundae, not when you give it to them! read more

Decent selection and love the addition of Yogurt X. But... At this particular location, you'll be lucky if you are served in under 20 minutes even on a slow day. Slowest branch I've ever been to and many of the staff seem to have a horrible attitude. Made three attempts in the last month with the following result: 1. Was a nice day so I was expecting a line and there was one... right out to the street. No problem. I was ready for the wait. 20 minutes later... Only 4 people had been served! The only reason I was moving forward was that other people were giving up. Waited another 10 minutes with only another 4 people coming out with ice cream and I gave up. Wrote an e-mail to JP Licks and no response. 2. Staff was hussling this time. But... No Yogurt X. Would have been nice if they put up a sign letting those of us in line know but, heah, they were working hard. 3. Short line... Only about 20 people in front of me but it took half an hour to get served. Slow... Slow... Slow. I can walk over to Berry Line in Mass Ave in much less time. No more JP Licks for me. read more

I would NOT recommend J P Licks. I heard and read a lot of good things about this place and decided to try it. I was terribly disappointed. I did not catch the girls name who was serving at the counter, but she was extremely rude and not at all considerate of a mother who had twin toddlers in a double stroller. And when I tried to ask her for a couple of samples to avoid adding wait time to those in the long line while she was scooping and NOT talking to the other customer, she told me that she was busy and couldn't talk. Now I could understand a response like that if she was actually in conversation with the customer for whom she was serving, but when there's a line out the door & you have an opportunity to multi task & shorten wait time without being overburdened, you should do it. The LEAST she could have done was to be considerate and not be so rude. I can not remember exactly what day of the week my twins and I finally decided to go for the first time. My girls & I actually winded up walking out of the place & across the street to Mr Crepe for a nice fresh squeezed lemonade & raspberry sherbert. Whoever the girl was, she needs to get a job doing something that does not require her to be work in customer service. She's waay too rude for J P Licks & is going to cost them business if she stays. Only reason I can say this without a doubt is because my girls & I saw her while out walking a few days after this incident and I realized that her character must just be of a sour nature. read more

GREAT ice cream, but HORRIBLE experience. They often have really long lines in summer and on weekends and Saturday night, as was the case tonight when I was there. Unfortunately the 3 staff on shift were making no visible attempt to be efficient serving people, at times being downright slow. On top of that, they were careless and making mistakes and kind of being inconsiderate. For example, my friend ordered a sundae and was not told until after she was served the completed product that they were out of whipped cream, a pretty crucial sundae ingredient. Even worse, almost half small scoop of delicious Noodle Kugel ice cream was a massive hunk of Coffee Chip ice cream, which I didn't order and actually tasted really terrible with the light cinnamon of the Noodle Kugel. It was seriously a really big amount of Coffee Chip that the girl serving had to notice because it had large chocolate chips all through it, and the Noodle Kugel doesn't have chocolate chips, so I guess she just started scooping the wrong one and didn't care enough to grab a new cup or something. Sadly, the line was so long and the servers were so slow and apathetic that I didn't bother trying to get my order corrected and was stuck with half a cup of the wrong ice cream flavor that I don't even happen to like so had to throw away. Their reeces icecream shakes are EVERYTHING! Not sure exactly what its called but it was an icecream with chocolate and peanutbutter. Speaking about JP Licks in general, well their rotating flavors of the month are amazing. They often border the realm of overload and too good to be true, but some how they manage to walk such a fine line when it comes to my tastebuds. Of course there are their standard flavors, which are always in stock unless its a hot summer day with a line down the block that stretches around the corner and you're stuck at the end of it. And as for this particular location I have to say the staff and srevice here have been excellent. Everyone is always in a good mood and happy to answer any questions you might have, and don't forget about the samples! Their ice cream selection ranges from amateur to veteran so I guarantee you'll find the one you're looking for any time you get a serious ice cream craving. read more

The same as all the other JP Licks, with quality ice cream/froyo, but this location doesn't have as many froyo flavors as some of the bigger stores. The store itself is small and gets crowded (lines running out the doors in the summer) with very minimal indoor seating. Pricey for ice cream. read more

I'm here to tell you something really useful: You only need to get a "small." I stop in here at least 3 times a month and each time I remember why I bother to fight to find a parking spot. Best ice cream around!! Sometimes there is a line out the door so you know others share in your joy. The staff are always friendly and energetic. My favs are: Oreo, Maple Butter Nut and chocolate chip. I have ordered a bday cake from them before as well and what a hit that was. They do offer many flavors that are dairy free along with sugar free which is a huge plus seeing my best friend is a vegetarian. Stopped in yesterday afternoon while waiting for the bus to work. I came during a rush and the line seemed to be moving very slow (probably because I was anxious about missing my bus, but also because the staff were very attentive to their guests). The woman in front of me ordered a cake and lady behind the counter offered to personalize it for her, despite the long line. Almost every customer in front of me seemed to want a sample of this or that, but the staff were very patient (though I was growing more and more anxious by the minute.) Finally when it was my turn, I ordered an iced PSL. I must say, the woman who whipped that up for me REALLY knew what she was doing on that bar!!! It was seriously the BEST PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE i've ever had. As I walked out of there with the most satisfying taste of fall this side of town, my bus was waiting in front of Davis. :) I got my Latte and made it to work on time. The service can be VERY slow, but I must admit as I sit here typing this from a Starbucks, it really is worth missing a bus or two for. You have set the PSL bar extremely high and now I am afraid that this latte I am sipping on right now is terribly disappointing. read more

With Richardson's right across the street, there is absolutely no reason to go here. The frappes are very thin and very expensive, and the ice cream is mediocre. It is in a great spot in Davis Square, but again, there is far better ice cream across the street. read more

I've only ever been to the Davis square location but I gotta say that I love this place. Part of that may be due to its proximity to my school and the fact that I've been a cow card carrier for over a year now (5 points away from getting a free $5). But I think this place really does have good, quality ice cream in some pretty creative flavors. Being so close to Tufts, we have events that JP Licks caters for all the time, so I've tasted the staple oreo flavor more times than I can count. I love their rotating monthly flavors though, and even their hard yogurts and sorbets are solid too. If you're feeling particularly indulgent and ideally if you're sharing with someone get the brownie sundae. The brownie is incredibly rich and fudgy and the hot fudge is some of the most chocolatey that I've had at an ice cream place. JP Licks is in no way cheap, but they do a lot of things right, so they've got my vote. read more

I cycle through the same four or so flavors, and I love them, though I should probably branch out a bit more. The staff here are great -- much, much better than at the newer Harvard Sq. location. Maybe the prices are high, but it's about what you'd expect for an ice cream shop. Only downside is the premade ice cream cakes -- and this is probably my bad for not custom ordering one -- but I was sorely disappointed in the quality. Won't make that mistake again. read more

I've been here countless times, and the ice cream is very delicious. Unfortunately, on Saturday or Sunday night there are often HUGE lines out the door. These are discouraging to encounter, and sadly I've decided that waiting in such a line is not worth it, and have gone without ice cream on these nights.
