Licks. Living in Connecticut, I was unfamiliar with J.P. Licks. I found out it's a Massachusetts ice cream chain with locations in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville, Newton, Wellesley, Andover, Lynnfield, and Dedham. When you walk into their colorful store, you'll see the big menu board highlighting their frozen treats - Ice Cream & Hard Yogurt Flavors, Soft & Tart Yogurt Flavors, Frappes, Smoothies, Dairy Free Drinks, Toppings, Sundaes, Splits, and more. We saw ice cream cakes and pies, ice cream sandwiches, cupcakes and so much more. They even have a coffee bar with hot breakfast & snacks like oatmeal, waffles, croissant and egg sandwiches, etc. I went into their Feature Flavors menu and was delighted to find a personal favorite - Orange Chocolate Chip "Creamy orange ice cream with soft, dark chocolate chips". It was outstanding. My wife went with a dish of Coconut Almond Chip - "Ultra coconut creamy ice cream with sweet, shredded coconut, roasted salted almonds, and semisweet chocolate chips in this chewy-crunchy textural delight". I sampled it and enjoyed it more than mine! Small cups ran over $5 apiece, so be forewarned. The young crew working at J.P. Licks was friendly and fun to chat with. We took one of their tables at the front of the store and the six of us enjoyed our excellent ice cream. read more

It has been at least 10 years since I have been to J.P. Licks, but I was nearby having dinner with a friend and he suggested stopping in. I had a dish of the mint chip, it was really good with no weird mint aftertaste and wasn't a neon-green color either. I'm not sure what he had because I was too busy eating my ice cream, but on a weeknight at 8pm it wasn't busy at all and we were happy (unlike the reviewer below who actually WEIGHS his quarts of ice cream to make sure he is getting enough???). read more

j.p. licks never disappoints. my boyfriend and i ordered the medium mint cookies and cream, and they even let us split it into 1 scoop in a cone and 1 scoop in a cup - so we paid for a medium instead of 2 smalls. small is $5.80, medium is $7.15 and large is $7.85. you can choose to put the ice cream in a cup, waffle cone, chocolate dipped cone, dipped and rolled sprinkle cone or a slider sundae (red sox plastic cap). we loved the mint flavor - it didn't taste too artificial. it was just right! service is great. the line can get long at times, but it moves quickly. when we were there, 3 servers were serving at the same time. overall rating: 10/10 read more

I have been to this location many times before and service has been usually friendly. But on my recent visit, I was treated rudely and demeaningly by the server who asked me to go back in line when I had been waiting in line patiently all along and hadn't jumped the queue. She was unpleasant and condescending. She slammed ice cream lids on the table so loudly, it startled my 4 year old. She was snickering and rolling her eyes the entire time. The employees there are friendly and quick. Stopped by an hour before they closed the other day, and the line wasn't bad. They have a lot of great flavors to offer, and the employees there not only encouraged me to try different flavors but also didn't seem to mind if I wanted multiple samples. I tried two of the monthly flavors, London Fog and Kowlua, and would definitely recommend both as the unique flavors of their beverage counterparts really came through and worked well with the creamy ice cream base. The small is actually a couple scoops, so you can mix and match, which is what I did. Though J.P. Licks is a bit pricey, it's definitely worth it every once in a while. read more

We came here on date night for a quick dessert and splurged on a banana split, which was MUCH bigger than I expected. The ice cream flavors we tried were strawberry, coconut almond chip, and black raspberry. The coconut almond chip was amazing. We added cherries, whipped cream, hot fudge, and waffle bits, topped with MORE whipped cream. We were so full. I've never NOT finished an ice cream until this night. Extraordinary good luck for all of us in Wellesley: we've got our own JP Licks now! And it is tasty. It was sad to lose the Body Shop, but it was great to get a local business in its place. Especially a local business that is so creamy and delicious. We were both feeling really cruddy, and we got some tea and Cookies 'N Cream ice cream. Both were just what the doctor ordered. The ice cream is as rich, decadent, and amazing as I've ever had it in Jamaica Plain itself. The cool thing that they're doing is actively mentioning to customers that if you register a new Cow Card, you get a free ice cream and a free coffee/tea/drink. This is their customer loyalty program, and although we already have a cow card (and have reaped so many of the benefits of it in our time in Boston), it was great to hear them talking it up. I got a free ice cream on my birthday, and you get a reward coupon for making a certain amount of purchases. One of the best cards I carry. For some reason J.P. Licks has always been an ice-cream shop that everyone raves about. This has always confused me, as the ice-cream is good, but there is nothing overly special about it. I visited this JP Licks location last week with my younger sister as we were shopping in Wellesley center. My sister ordered the cookie sandwich, and I had a black coffee. My sisters two cents on the cookie sandwich- "The cookies were not great, but the actual ice-cream was amazing. Sadly, there was not enough between the two cookies, so the cookie to ice-cream ratio suffered." My coffee was good, but once again, just average. I would say overall, JP Licks is a good ice-cream / coffee shop, but it is nothing special. read more

Completely baffled the entire staff! Went in for two Sundaes $13.50 for the " small" version Place was busy I moved down the line to the cashier to pay and not hold up the line. Handed her a $50 she said My boss says I can't take that! It's not a $100 it not the firsrt transaction of the day and change was easily available as I'd guess they collected about $100 in small bills in the time I was there in line waiting to order. I said no this is all I have and it legal tender American currency and this 1. Embarrassing and 2. Possibly illegal despite posting very inconspicuously that they don't take bills over $20 Go to staples buy a counterfeit pen and teach your employees that not everyone coming in sees your sign about large bills. Read the currency bill if 1965 and use common sense the change was $36 That a $20 a $10 a $5 and $1. Five-star ice cream, five-star cakes, five-star customer service. Under new management, the employees are always fast, happy, kind, and accommodating. There's something for your vegans, your gluten-frees, and your alcoholics. Nut allergies are treated very seriously here and the employees always try to get you what you want. I highly recommend the coconut almond chip, cookies and cake batter, and any of the dairy-free flavors. It can be crowded at night since it's the only place in Wellesley open late (11pm on weekdays and midnight Fridays and Saturdays!), but service is usually fast. People watching can be fun here as there is a huge window looking out into the street, not to mention the gaggles of high school and college students coming in for their frappes. Prices are on the higher side (if only for the high-quality ingredients), but you can start a cow card here and receive $5 free for every $50 spent and a free birthday and registration anniversary sundae to save a little bit of money too. Dont get me wrong I've experienced a less the desirable batch but that was a rare occurance. Well back to this past saturday's visit. After extensive testing, I've decided that J.P. Licks has the best coffee ice cream in the Boston area -- even better than my old standby Brigham's or any of the local farms that I've tried. It's a fair bit more expensive than either White Mountain or Truly's down the street, but it's worth it (especially if you have their Cow Card, which effectively makes it 10% off if you go there often). They've also gotten a lot of my business by default simply by being the only thing open after 10 PM in Wellesley. read more

I really only get medium cups of single flavors, because I find the flavors so delicious on their own that I don't need toppings. It's not because I'm cheap - ok, maybe a little bit. This is a smaller location and chairs are scarce [go during downtimes in fall/winter if you want to snag a seat] and the music is kind of awkward, but I really do love them. I still maintain that their Oreo ice cream is the best I've ever had, but now I'm falling in love with the chocolate brownie batter ice cream. read more

I love JP licks. I think the ice cream is top notch. I did have an unfortunate experience today that quite frankly, I can't get over! I walked into the store in Wellesley this evening, toward 5pm, no one in the store. I ordered a pint of frozen yogurt and side of sprinkles. I paid, and it cost $10. I was surprised at the price, as it was only a pint, but when I asked, the girl told me she charged me $3.25 for the sprinkles. I have NEVER been charged for sprinkles... seriously, NEVER. Anytime I have gone in to the other stores, they have graciously given me the sprinkles along with the ice cream... not this time. Is it just Wellesley?? For that, I could have gotten some pb cups or better yet, gone elsewhere and paid less for more. Again, the ice cream is good, but I was surprised at being charged for something that really is worth so much less.... $3.25? Disappointed, to say the least. My boyfriend and I stumbled into JP Licks by chance (closest ice cream place to where we were standing). We ordered a Black Raspberry Ice Cream and Orange Irish Sorbet. The black raspberry was thick and rich and creamy. It satisfied my sweet tooth, but it wasn't too sweet or overbearing. The sorbet also contained alcohol, which won me over. It didn't get us tipsy or buzzed though, oh well. The prices range on the higher side, and I was a bit surprised. But since I'm from out of state, it was worth my craving for some thick and milky ice cream. I also loved the design and the atmosphere, with the walls covered in grass to give an outdoorsy feel. I've been to the Wellesley store twice. Although it's closer to where I live, I prefer the assembly row location. This is a smaller more modest Jp licks. I'm sure it's been around for a long time. They don't have a parking lot but if you come after 6pm all the street meters are free. The store is on the small side and like I mentioned, it's nowhere near as nice as the assembly row store. There are about 4 tables for seating and a bench. They do not have wifi which was annoying and I had to connect to Starbucks' wifi. My last visit was on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. The line only took a few minutes. What took longer was getting a table. Portion sizes are pretty small for the price you pay (I'm very spoiled by richardsons) but the quality of the ice cream is top notch. I recommend getting at least a medium and you can't go wrong with any flavor that's made with Oreos. read more

I said the order was wrong and asked for cookies n cream again. I was then given cookie dough. I did not realize this until I was in the car. My friend got ice cream and asked for chocolate chips.
