J. Peters Grill & Bar is a pretty standard casual dining spot that doesn't really stand out compared to other local options in the area. The food overall is just okay.. nothing particularly memorable or something that would make you want to rush back. The one consistent highlight is the house salad, which is "hot bacon" and unique compared to the rest of the menu. Beyond that, most dishes tend to feel average, the Alfredo is just ok and while nothing is necessarily bad, there's not much that elevates the experience either. The environment also doesn't do much to enhance the visit. It's fairly plain, dark black, and lacks any real character or atmosphere that makes it feel special or worth choosing over other nearby restaurants. Overall, it's an "it's fine" kind of place; serviceable if you're already there, but there are plenty of stronger local spots worth going to first. read more

This waitress we had was extremely rude Makayla I think her name was I told her that I wanted a separate check I was out with my family and the food I had was burnt I had the chicken tenders they were so burnt and hard to eat we ask for the bill and she slams the bill down on our table and says oh seperate check this was so rude and then I gently remind her and she had the biggest attitude the whole day at our table I didn't want to send the food back because the one time we go back here we won't be back I've never had a such bad experience in my life I've always come into this place spent lots of money and always have great service not this time please make this right refund please and train your employees to care about people and do better fix this whole terrible meal we had thank you refund would be great read more

Went with several people and we were seared immediately. The waitress was very friendly and accommodating. I ordered she crab soup and a blackened shrimp quesadilla. My granddaughter ordered potato skins and loaded potato soup. Her loaded potato soup had way more flavor than the she crab soup. My quesadilla was simply blackened shrimp and cheese. No other flavors so kind of bland. The potato skins on the other hand were full of flavor and enough to make a meal. All and all I would probably return but would go over the menu more carefully next time. In all fairness, blackened shrimp quesadillas were not on the menu so it was a special order. My wife and I came in for the Happy Hour Prime Rib special, but I'm pretty sure we accidentally unlocked a secret menu item called "Prime Rib‑Flavored Ham... or Ham‑Flavored Prime Rib... or Possibly a Meat Loaf Witness Protection Program." The slice looked perfectly smooth, like it had been sanded, buffed, and polished at a body shop. No grain, no marbling -- just one solid, uniform slab of mystery protein. When I cut into it, it didn't behave like beef. It behaved like... well... a meat eraser. Flavor‑wise, it was extremely salty and had zero beef taste. If someone had blindfolded me and said, "Here, try this thick slice of baked ham," I would've said, "Yep, that's ham." Except I ordered prime rib. To be fair, the service was great, the atmosphere was nice, and everything except the meat was exactly what we expected. But that "prime rib" was the culinary equivalent of being catfished. I truly hope the restaurant takes a look at this dish -- because I'd love to come back and try the real prime rib next time. read more

I like this place. Everything i have ever ordered has been excellent. This time was a stinker. Ribs and fries not good the fries were limp and the ribs had no taste at all. The side salad was good. We walked right in on a Friday night. My family faves about this place but it was my first time going. I asked the waitress on her favorite dish and she recommended the blackened chicken alfredo with broccoli. It seemed pricey but you do get a lot. The service and waitress were both great. I ordered a steak and baked potato on 11/17/25. My baked potato was not cooked thoroughly. My filet was supposed to be medium well. It was medium rare. I could not eat it. We went on a Thursday night for take out and they were moderately busy- we ordered and were on our way home in 15 minutes. Food was delicious. We went back Friday night before 6 pm (early bird specials) they were wall to wall busy. Still only two in our party we were seated within10 minutes. However our server was swamped with new seatings. He was able to get our bar order and food order in a normal amount of time especially being extremely busy. I tried to order a drink my bar tender friend gave me a recipe card for (1-should not have tried on such a busy night-2- almost did not get my recipe card back) after a couple of tries they came pretty close. Dinner came- she-crab soup and blackened tuna salad for me and potato soup and BBQ chicken nachos for my honey. It was all delicious. We also were appreciative that the manager was actually a working manager- she cleared tables, checked on customers and also was the one who got my drink fixed. I really, really like dining here. They try hard and hit home runs most of the time. Today, however, I came away unimpressed. We had the lunch menu and I got the prime rib. Really good value for $20 with a great side salad as usual. However, they used a lot of garlic in some form or another on the meat, which is an old restaurant trick to make beef that maybe on the elderly side taste better. This certainly reminded me of that. I couldn't eat more than a few bites. Took the remained home and I will try my best to salvage it. Their menu says "Our 14 oz. cut of Prime Rib is seasoned and slow-roasted in our renowned Alto-Sham oven for tenderness and flavor that is unmatched." It says nothing about garlic, another give away. Otherwise, I think you'd be happy eating here and maybe you love garlic on your steak/beef. But, you won't be able to taste the beef which is a shame. read more

4.5 stars! Super excited to see J Peter's take over this spot. Even though it is technically a franchise/chain - it's def. a welcome one in the area. The atmosphere is dim/not very decorated but I still felt welcome as was the hostess was very friendly. Large bar in the middle of the restaurant keeping the same layout as the previous chain, but def a bit nicer. (albeit a bit dark/dim lighting) Our server was amazing, friendly yet professional. She greeted us promptly and her check ins on us were timely. She kept our drinks full without our prompting, something always appreciated! I love ribs, LOVE them. And I was a bit hesitant as the description didn't say what size it would be. (quarter rack, half, or full....) For the price I figured a half rack at best - imagine my surprise when a FULL rack of ribs came out looking delicious! The silver skin was still on the ribs sadly, but they were fall off the bone, cooked perfectly with a nice amount of smoke. I had sweet potato waffle fries as my side and they were cooked nice and crisp with a little sprinkling of salt. Husband and sister had the prime rib which was very flavorful and cooked to their requested temp. That went down very easily for them! Brother in law had a massive burger that he enjoyed immensely and the little one had chicken wings and picked on my ribs. We were very satisfied, all around and are so happy to have this as an option in our area. Keeping it from 5 stars was the silver skin still being on my ribs, the chicken wings were pretty sad, the dimness in the restaurant, and décor was a bit "cold" with all of the dark wood. read more

I've been here many times and the food is always good. I would have given them a much higher score except for the manager Chris who also serves as a cook. We went in for lunch on July 4th. We were the only people in the restaurant at the time. We ordered four meals. Our 90 year old grandmother ordered a bowl of soup and hers didn't come with a salad. I asked the waitress if they would please split my salad into a separate bowl for her and she said "I'll certainly ask". When she brought it out, she had a separate bowl and said the cook wouldn't split it out. She apologized profusely and was clearly embarrassed by his behavior. Remember now that we were the only people in the restaurant. If I was the owner, I'd show this man the door and ask him to go work for the competition. Upon ordering a drink, was told by our server that she would "let my ID slide, but most places wouldn't" & then proceeded to tell me that I better be careful because other places would probably take it away from me because it's fake. After I told her it was real, she repeated that she was letting it slide this time, but most people wouldn't, implying again that it is not a real ID. So what I'm hearing from this is that if someone is underage they might be able to get away with a fake if they are lucky enough to have Amy as their server. The Gentleman at the bar that handed me my bill & ran my credit card welcomed himself a $5 tip on a $18takeout order. I spoke to 2 managers a woman by the name Josea (spelling) & a gentleman named Steve. Both were worthless & did absolutely nothing as they both lied to me & told me that the guy behind the bar wasn't in & they also didn't expect me to show up 10 minutes later & saw that employee was indeed there & working. What a horrible restaurant!!! I took my family of 13 to eat at the Murrells Inlet location and it was a disaster. We were seated upstairs in two separate tables. (We were the only customers upstairs at the time) When we asked if we could move two tables together so we could sit together the manager was adamant we would not be allowed to. She referenced the owner saying he would burn the place down before he would allow tables to be moved. The manager continued to be rude and obnoxious and as someone who has worked with the public for over 20 years if she worked for me she would be fired. The food wasn't great and we had one new server which was of course problematic. He did the best he could! J Just got done eating at this place. Absolutely disappointed. I specifically asked the waitress if the prime rib came rare or bloody. She said I could get it well done if I like. I waited longer than everyone else at my table which is expected and fine. My prime rib came to the table and was medium rare and bloody. I specifically asked if that's the way it came so I could avoid this situation. I told my waitress and all she said was oh sorry. I thought she'd offer to take it off my bill since I didn't even eat one piece. I told her I'd take it home and have to cook it myself but she could've cared less. I was charged full price and at no point did she offer to replace my order or take it off the bill. If they couldn't make it well done you could've just told me and I would've ordered something else. We ordered to go. It was around noon on a weekday. We've been to j peters many times and love the lunch specials. We were charged full price for both orders of prime rib. When we questioned it we were told "we should have been sore off in ordering the lunch special". No one has ever even offered us the dinner portion at that hour. But okay....then when we got it home to eat, both were severely overcooked. It was also very tough, it was just a bad cut and combined with being well done inedible. When we called to complain we were told by the woman who too our order that she'd NEVER had anyone complain in her ten plus years of working there. Now, I used to work in the restaurant industry and we just know that is not true. Anyway it seems no one at the restaurant cares as we tried to contact them at least three times very friendly (no attitude). However, it was addressed quickly and adequately. My husband's entree was sad and disappointing. Really, for a steakhouse, the cut was terribly inadequate.
