Every time I plan a trip down to Wynwood, I check out the offerings at J Wakefield to make sure I'm not missing out on anything special. My most recent visit had a few incredible selections, both imperial stouts, the Even More Nuts and PB&Gains. I chose the PB&Gains because it's so smooth and peanut butter! Yum. Even More Nuts is a super luscious beer filled with decadent flavors like Macadamia, Pecan, and Hazelnuts. So it's definitely a sipper at 14%. The atmosphere and service is super chill and friendly here and it's filled with awesome Star Wars art, and some random superhero art as well. There's seating inside and outside, and they have these huge tasty looking empanadas as well. Street parking is only difficult if you arrive at a really busy time. You'll want to wander around anyway, so even if you park a little out of the way, there's a lot to look at. read more

J Wakefield is my favorite brewery in Wynwood. I'm by no means a bear connoisseur, but I know what I like and I like El Jefe. This Hefeweizen is what my beer dreams are made of, and I look forward to enjoying it every time I visit. It's light and refreshing, but also a tinge sweet - so it checks all my beer boxes and then some. Although I am not adventurous in my beer selections, I beam with pride at the fact that a Miami -based brewery has won not only national, but international accolades! We're lucky to have a spot like J Wakefield in our hood! We were lucky enough to get a tour of the brewery (s/o to Alex) the last time we went. I was so impressed not only at the craftsmanship that goes into making everyone so hoppy, but also the amount of beer these folks are able to crank out in such a small space! Speaking of the folks at J Wakefiled - they are knowledgable and so so friendly. Recently, I decided to pick up a brew for a beer share that Blue A. hosted for all of us Community Managers in San Fransisco. I thought there was no better brewery to represent the 305 than this, but had extreme panic about choosing wrong. Thanks to the helpful crew, I was able to select the Mongo - an aged barley wine - for the share. Although not my personal favorite, folks who like barley wine said it was the best one they've tried. Why 5 stars? Because I've heard the legend, and now I know. --- --- --- We arrived shortly before J Wakefield was closing up for the night, but not too late to enjoy a quick beverage. It was called Big Poppa, which was an appropriate name for this 15% ABV(!!!) Imperial Stout with Coffee, Coconut and Vanilla. While this was the only beer I had an opportunity to try, I've sipped other J Wakefield brews around town, and have never been let down. Most recently I tried El Jefe at the Yelpchella event up in Broward, and remembered what it was like to fall in love. Because J Wakefield was closing up shop, we were told that we could take our plastic cups and head outside to the picnic tables so that we didn't feel rushed, which is exactly what we did. Prior to that, I spilled some beer on the bar and felt like a real jerk about it, but the bartender really didn't seem to mind and made me feel like less of a terrible person than I deserved to feel like. That was probably worth 5-stars alone. And if you're wondering, this was only a few sips in to my 15% brew, so I'm going to chalk it up to general clumsiness, and not inebriation. First time I came here was in May 2017, Not from Miami, and was in town visiting a Navy friend. Came here and tried the El Jefe Beer. OMG I was in utter disbelief on how delish this beer was. I could not stop drinking it and could not stop thinking about it when I came back home to San Diego. For months I pondered on my return to gulp down that delish El Jefe.. Finally came back a few months later and it was just as delicious as I remember. Stuffed my luggage with 3 packs of them and shared them with beloved family and friends. My first visit at JWB and it did not disappoint! We were greeted right away, sat down at the bar area and was immediately given a menu with their current beers on tap/canned. I ordered their new Rosè all day beer which was so great. My husband tried a few of theirs (unsure of the name) and he also was very impressed. I loveeee beer and this is one of my first stops when I come to the Wynwood area. I always have El Jefe to begin and my second is always something different just to change it up a little. The last time I came I tried rok n coco and was great but it was not there so I choose El Campo de fresas its a little strong with 11% alchol but was very smooth. I was pleasantly surprised to know they are serving empanadas from a restaurant near by and are about $3 they had spinach, spicy beef, regular beef and a tomato basil which was delicious. The staff are very friendly and let you sample the variety of beers they have. They also have inside and outside seating with a tv so you can watch your favorite game. If your a beer lover then you must check this spot out before anything else you wont be disappointed. read more

The staff is so friendly and the DJ on May the 4th be with you event was keeping the party going! Great place, great beer, great service. Loved the El Jefe hefeweizen. It's definitely in the top ten hefeweizens I have consumed. My wife liked the sours and the porter. I could have sat here and drank beer all day. The down side is trying to find parking around the place. Once you do find a spot on the street, you have to go to a website, enter your location ID, enter your name, email address and CC # to pay for your spot. It's kind of a hassle, but if I was in the area again I would definitely stop in here and have some beers. read more

By far one of my favorite brewery's in wynwood, if your looking for a brewery with fresh new taps of brew this this the place. They offer and outdoor and indoor area to enjoy your cold brew. The outside area consist of some bench's and tables only bad thing is that on a hot day there is no shade but we in Miami tank tops and shorts lol. The inside is nice and cool bar is not to big sits around 8-10 and the outer area has about 4-5 tables that sit 3-4 people and towards the front they have a large seating table. The place is always very well kept and clean along with there bathrooms. They have plenty of bartenders behind the bar so wait time is pretty short and that's a good thing in a busy bar. They offer a great selection on snack like there popcorn that hits the spot for that late night snack. To there only down fall is there tap room hours that are really early for me atleast especially if am enjoying myself. But if your looking for a hip crowd and causal location to have a few beers with friends or even make new friends this is the place to be. read more

J. Wakefield was casual and had a good vibe. It also has a stellar reputation. That's why I surprised that I didn't like it nearly as much as I thought I would. It comes down to the beer -- all four that I tried. In my flight, I didn't particularly care for any of them. And a couple were downright awful. There was just an unfiltered, sloppy harshness that ran through everything I tried. I liken it to homebrew done by amateurs. Take the "That's My Jam" IPA, the description for which says that it has "notes of strawberry, cocoa nibs, and coffee." First of all, there was something misleading about this. When a tasting description says that something has "notes of something" in it, that doesn't usually mean that it actually has that thing! A fine wine might have "notes of fresh cut grass", "tobacco", or "forest floor" -- but only a silly winemaker actually puts those things in it. J. Wakefield does put those things in it, which means they clearly don't know the basic conventions of beverage tasting. What's more, there's nothing nice, coherent, or pleasant about that particular combination. Basically, it has the feel of guys with no real sense of taste or balance just kind of throwing things together. I'll almost certainly give JWB a second chance the next time I'm in Winwood. But from my last visit, I left disappointed. read more

I've had several of J Wakefield Brewing's offerings over the years but had never managed to make the pilgrimage to, what is now, my favorite brewery. First off, the Star Wars theme, both in the outside seating area as well as the taproom are amazing. I'm a big time Star Wars nerd, so when you combine huge Star Wars murals with perfect beer, you can't do much better in my humble opinion. I went up to the bar to choose and I stood looking at the tap list of 16 options (pilsners and imperial IPA's to sours and imperial BA stouts) for several minutes. I finally settled on the Slammin Bones with is a hazy New England IPA. Wow. Perfect. Fruity, hoppy, perfectly balanced, and so so tasty. I almost got another of the same but I forced myself to get something different for round two and I'm so glad I did. For pint number two, I went with the Los Wajiros, a sour berliner weiss with guava, mango, and star fruit. Dang. Also perfection. The bartenders were super friendly and helpful. I will most definitely be back. 10/5 stars easily. Maybe more. read more

We sampled 4 different local beers, they all tasted OK. The atmosphere is nice. Very artsy and goes along with the brewery being in the Wynwood area with more locals than tourists! The service wasn't all that great though. We asked the girl for recommendations and she basically read the entire menu on the wall out loud and she also saw us standing by the register and didn't take our order for the next 5 minutes even though there was no one else in line. The guy just took the menu from the bar (when I ask him if I could have the menu, obviously he was with really bad attitude) when I was about to take a look of what I wanted to order, and the second guy was kind of upset because I only ordered one beer. The service was great, we were trying to get a picture of the one mural and a staff member closed the garage door to allow us to get the full picture. They had a decent variety of beer. There are only two things we didn't like. 1. I guess on Monday nights they reserve most of their indoor seating to a group of people to have their meeting. That's cool bc they drink beer during the meeting but they also request to turn off the music. A big no no in my book. All you hear is people chatting and kids playing. Finally got to enjoy some of J Wakefield's amazing craftbeer selections. The brewery itself is conveniently located in Wynwood. It has an outside seating area and nearby parking. There is usually always a delicious food truck nearby as well. When I went they had an everything lobster food truck, amazingly paired with most of the beers inside. The art on the walls of the taproom, much like all of Wynwood, was spot on, and incredibly detailed. They also offer popcorn, crafted popcorn if you will. The best was the Buffalo ranch and the oreos, aaaaamaazing. Now let's talk beer. I would try them via flights, gives you the opportunity to try several ounces of 4 or more. STAR WARS THEMED! Come in dressed at Luke, Lea, Wicket, Chewie, Han, or even Jaba the Hut! The staff loves when you do that. The beers are quite delicous and have fun throw back names. One of my faves is "Hop for Teacher", I'm a huge Van Halen fan and enjoy a bit of hoppiness at the same time. Come hangout, drink love beer, and play some board games. Make sure to check out all the art and say "glaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaarraaa"(Chewie for "Hey hot stuff your beer looks delicious, pour me your current fave") to a beer maiden. read more

Slammin' Bones appears to have taken a play from the snowbird handbook and transported itself from New England down to Miami, as it is an excellent example of the juice, hazy style IPA that started in the upper regions of I-95. I'll admit that I wasn't the biggest fan of their coconut IPA, but that is one you either love or hate and I'm not all that big a fan of coconut generally. I did enjoyed their Paan Wala saison with mango, coriander, and fennel seed. Street parking will be hard to come by, but plan to stick around for a little bit in the area, as the Salty Donut just down the road has a variety of mouth-watering brioche donuts. Super hipster. I digress. Two big thumbs up for the Star Wars paintings and references all around, including the large mural outside of Darth Vader's helmet. Sad to miss their collaboration double can release the next day, but happy that they had some 16oz four pack offerings nice and cool ready to go, along with 22oz bottles. Friendly service, an entertaining wireless password, and seating both inside and out. Glad to see the craft beer scene has improved in SE Florida from my last visit a handful of years ago! read more

I finally made it to J Wakefield, woohoo!! I discovered, not too long ago, I like beer (ok not really true, I only like a small subset of beer - Berliner Weisses) and J Wakefield has been on my radar ever since, as it seems they also enjoy Berliners and often have a few different flavors available. After hitting up the Sud Swap near by and declaring the day an unofficial beer crawl, it only made sense to check out J Wakefield. 1st impression - wow this place is small. 2nd impression - wow this place is cleaner and less divey than I expected. Truth be told I haven't really been to a lot of breweries, so my expectations are pretty much based around the huge brewery we've all come to love in Broward, so yes this place is small compared to that. Also seemed pretty busy and we eventually hung around the windows with counter seating. Since the place was packed and ordering flights for a large group seemed impossible we all went ahead and picked one beer each. Total bill for ~7 people was cheaper than I expected, so I personally was happy with the price. I opted to try their Lychee Rose Berliner which was great, though could have had a little more sweetness to it. I made sure to try some of their popcorn and the bartender suggested the Maple Bacon flavor which I loved! Also, seemed less messy that the people eating a cheese flavor who had cheese all over their fingers lol. Personally, I can't wait to come back, but that's truly due to the fact that I know they'll always have a Berliner to keep me happy. I loved the theme (lots of Star Wars) and loved the playful naming of some of the beers (definitely caught an Office Space joke). Great addition to the Wynwood area. You can tell they put alot of love and thought into their beer making. The minute you walk in its like you walked into a star wars movie. All the wall art and murals is themed from that awesome movie. They have have several tables and chairs to chose from and some stools by the bar. They have a nice selection of beers to choose from. The day I was there I tried the La Nada beer which was very good. Good stout beet. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable about the beer they make and serve. They don't have a or serve any food. They just have popcorn and a trail mix. They also don't have a full bar or wine. They take cash or credit cards. I have to confess that I am not a fan of sour beers, and that's what Wakefield is best known for. So, I couldn't say I have been an avid fan of Wakefield when I tried their beer at Sud Swap or other events. However, now they have a taproom open, I eagerly get over to try. And happy to see that they have lots of other styles on tap now. They have about five regulars, my favorite is the Hazelnut Coffee Imperial Stout. Utterly delicious with a very rich hazelnutty, coffeey flavor. I like hazelnut coffee but this is better than any I've tried, and it's not just the addition of alcohol. I want this for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert!! They also have some special brews, listed on the board, what's on tap now and what's on tap later. Needless to say, those "coming soon" ones always sound more interesting. I tried the Marshmallow Union Jack Porter, which is creamy and smooth. The Peach IPA - gosh - I can just sniff the lovely, rich, peachy note and die with a smile on my face. Staff is very friendly. I asked if they have beers available in flight/taster glass sizes, because as a slow drinker who like to try new things, I prefer to have several small glasses than a single big one. They told me they're waiting for the small glasses to come in but can gladly pour me half glasses and charge me accordingly. For that they get a little bump to a full five stars. Price is a little higher than other local breweries I've been to, but the quality definitely justifies it. NOTE: They are still in SOFT OPENING stage. Check their facebook page before you visit, as they haven't settled on their hours yet. last week they were open Thur - Sun, opening on Thur at 4pm, and this week Thur - Sat, on Thur at 2pm. The place is small, but filled with really cool decorations. It gets ridiculously busy, but the staff is still attentive and as quick as they can be. They also sell their own merch that you can buy if you're interested. The place is great, but the beer they had on tap isn't my type: stouts, sours, and a few others. Well after waiting to visit this brewery for months, waiting for the hype to go down all I have to say is Im a little bit disappointed . I was planning on getting a flight as usual. The reason cause I like to get a flight when I first visit a brewery, is because I like first to get a feeling of the brews. However, this is the deal with them and basically how it works. You can only get a flight from their five main beers, opposed to whatever they have on their tap list, but you can only get four on a flight, bummer !!!! Secondly the girls behind the bar had the worst attitude and willingness to help the customer. Every time I ask for a beer, their reactions were as if I was asking for something for free and seemed to be bothered. I mean if you are overwhelmed because the business is packed you should be happy about it but to have a nasty attitude directed to your clientele is a no no. Now lets go down to their beers, I've been hearing about how J is a great brewer and I have no doubts about it. However, the beers on tap last night where good and thats about it. Their Hazelnut was good, but a little bit too much, and their Saison "Not Even French. was probably the best of the night, I would say a very solid beer. La Nada the beer that seem to be their signature is pretty much what the name said Nada, Nada impressive at all. I def would go back and maybe update my review, but for now I would not get out of my way to go visit. read more

One of my favorite experiences of my trip to Miami was this brewery in Wynwood. If you appreciate great beer, do not miss this. Wynwood Brewery a few blocks down is okay (very friendly place! And much quieter ambience!) but if I had to choose one, J. Wakefield is a beast, hands down. Normally, breweries have 1 or 2 really good brews and the rest are decent. NOT HERE. El Jefe (Hefeweizen) - WHOA. IT JUST GOT REAL. This is Weihenstephaner on steroids! Great big juicy banana and clove intermingling, my favorite!! Hop for Teacher - Not the best IPA I've had (Grimm, Other Half and Hill Farmstead spoiled me) but a very traditional take that's nice and drinkable Pineapple IPA - This. THIS. This blew me away. There aren't many 'good' fruit IPA's on the market. Ballast Point does have a Pineapple IPA but theirs is hop-forward whereas J. Wakefields is fruit-forward. This is WAYY better; imagine eating a pineapple with all its juicy sweetness, at perfect ripeness. Yup. There it is. (With all respect tho, ballast point grapefruit is awesome) I love the creative beer names: Have you seen my stapler (tripel), Master Blaster (porter) and... Yipee Ki Yay Mother Pucker Blueberry (Berliner Weiss)!! Out of season when I went, but Miami Madness and Dragonfruit Passion Fruit Berliner are two of their best beers (dw I tasted the passion in all the other beers..that wasn't corny at all) Really cool decor of superheroes, Star Wars, comics and paraphernalia adorned everywhere and also a Mexican food truck is stationed outside if you're hungry - Great brewery! read more

I've only come here another time before and I really enjoyed my experience. When you first enter the brewery, the walls are filled with portraits from Star Wars along with other nerdy ones. They always have new beers on top and today there's even a bottle release for four beers or five beers, I can't remember. This brewery is always buzzing though and that's why I like it so much. The nerdiness is just a bonus along with the friendly atmosphere. When we entered the chaos of this brewery, I admit, the aromas of it all wasn't particularly pleasing so if they turned on the AC, I'd probably like it more but a brewery isn't about that, it's all about the beer and they never fail to deliver on that. On top of that they have a fish and chips local shop posted outside for people that want to eat after drinking for so long. I highly recommend this place for any avid beer aficionado! read more

After being lucky enough to experience an amazing event at J Wakefield with superb beer and accommodating, warm hospitality, the "bar" was set fairly high (pun intended). Perhaps that is part of the reason why I wasn't blown away on my second visit. I love me a good sour, and thankfully I was able to enjoy one the second time around. Although a little lighter than I prefer, it hit the spot for what I was craving. I wasn't as thrilled with my second selection, but I didn't really get the guidance and taste testing I was hoping for. With only one couple, a single guy, and myself in there I figured the service at the bar would be impeccable. For me, it left something to be desired. The young woman was a tad aloof and too busy on the phone to greet me when I walked in. Love the decor and clean feel of the taproom especially the high ceilings. A couple spots of parking in the front, but they were taken by employees when I last visited Bottom line: excellent selection of delicious beers brewed on premises.
