J. Wakefield Brewing is an independently-owned craft brewery and taproom located in the heart of Miami's Wynwood Arts District. They make quality beers that don't always fit the norm. From their renowned sours to instant classics like El Jefe, a Coconut infused Hefeweizen and Hops 4 Teacher IPA, they craft traditional styles while utilizing local and occasionally unexpected ingredients, as well as, barrel aging techniques to give these styles a unique twist and depth of character. It all started back in 2005 with a simple Mr. Beer homebrew kit. At the time, John had obtained his Masters degree in accounting and taken the occasional culinary class. What started off as a hobby quickly grew into a lifestyle--the lifestyle of a brew master. Since, John has become a staple in the craft beer community. He has won multiple home brew competitions, accolades within the professional industry, and has gained world-wide recognition. According to ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com, his DFPF (Dragon Fruit/ Passion Fruit) and Miami Madness Berliner Weisse are currently ranked number one and two for best Berliner in the world. John took this respect and recognition and utilized it as a platform to push off from. He was one of the first brew masters to utilize a crowd-funded campaign--CrowdBrewed--in order to raise $55,000 to open his own brewery. To his surprise, his goal was reached within 30 hours of the campaign going live. After much hard work, dedication and perseverance, J Wakefield Brewing finally opened its doors in January 2015 and the heart of Wynwood and a mega superhero in the craft beer community world wide. An awesome spot located in a really cool area. Tucked away off the street, they brew some really solid beer. The vibe is really chill, with awesome nerd street art all over walls outside, that continues when you step into the tap room. They even have a life size frozen Han Solo Carbonite table, so cool I really enjoyed their rice lager and their dark lager. read more

Do yourself a favor and check out J Wakefield Brewing. Even if you aren't a big beer drinker, the variety of options are sure to let you find something you'll enjoy. From sours to milkshake IPAs to barrel aged stouts, they have it all! The atmosphere is nerdy-cool (Star Wars and superhero/comic art), and there is plenty of bar and table seating. The customer service was good, and it was easy to order. The outside of the building/neighborhood is a little sketchy; the building is set back from the street a bit, so if you weren't in front of it you might think you're in the wrong place. I would recommend taking an Uber. We tried the whole tap list (we shared small, flight-sized pours), and we were impressed by everything. Good beers with great flavors. Easily the best brewery we tried on our trip to Miami. The only downside was the price, but you get what you pay for. They have some food available; it looked like they probably have (rotating?) food trucks. We ordered a couple of empanadas, which were good; solid bar food to tide you over. There is some merch and they have a cooler for beers to go, with just two options while were there (unfortunately $22 for a 4-pack of tall boy cans, but it was a milkshake IPA). No crowlers available, just cans to go. We had an enjoyable visit and I would highly recommend J Wakefield! read more

I came here on a Friday and it was fairly busy, but we were able to find a seat pretty fast. J Wakefield has a variety of sour beers and IPAs. I enjoyed some of their sour beers and a barrel aged beer from here. If you're a Star Wars fan, they have a huge mural on the inside and outside. The whole reason I wanted to go to Miami a few years back was to come and drink some beer here. Lucky for me I met the owner in Asheville while at a local brewery. That being said we visited a few years ago and now during Covid which puts a damper down on everything. Staff did exceptionally well getting me my beers I wanted and my take home bottles. The barrel aged beers were amazing as always. Had a smashed burger while sampling my beers from a vendor on site. Took a bunch of stuff home again for alll my SC people. Owner J. We have been coming to this brewery for years and always love it! Great bear, atmosphere, and location. Our visit last Saturday night was a little disappointing. Beer was great, service not great. We ordered an IPA and a can of cider at the counter. The attendant handed us a can and poured my husband's IPA in a plastic cup. She then TOLD us she was adding 18 percent gratuity automatically. Flipped the iPad around where it asked if we wanted to add an additional tip. When we asked for a real glass for the beer she said she didn't have anymore. I pointed behind her at 8 glasses. Got here 5 minutes before closing time and the guys were great. Managed to snag a few draft beers but I my personal favorite was the Mystic Brewe of Mardi Gras. Highly recommended if you're into sours. Sick superheroes/Starwars murals, throughout the establishment. You can just tell that the guys that work there are SUPER chill and down to earth and most importantly - you can shoot the sh*t with. Look forward to going back during the weekend and trying the Ted's Burgers pop up which everyone raves about their smash burgers. Loved it. This was my number one place to stop and it didn't disappoint. I had two stouts and a hazy IPA. All were delicious, the stouts were exceptional. Great little craft brewer in the Wynwood area...probably the best in the neighborhood. My first time here, I was not in love with J Wakefield because of some of the pricing tactics, but as time has gone on, they have become my favorite craft brewery in Wynwood. As always, Wynwood parking is a bear. Good luck. IT is all street parking, so find something where you can and feed the meter. There is a structure down the street from JWB, but I am not sure the cost. Wakefield is great because it is small. This lets them really play with different craft experiments. They have a rotating tap that is different almost every time I am there. They also sell a few bottle options if you want to take something home. Also, Wakefield is a huge Star Wars/comic guy, so you'll see all sort of Star wars paintings, along with other comic-related deco throughout the inside and outside of the bar. The mural wall of Darth Vader on the outside is noticeable from the street, but the interior wall is a mural of the Mos Eisley cantina, which is pretty cool as it is one of my favorite scenes from the movies. The beer itself is fabulous, and a reason to come back without any of the other great stuff going on here. Being a sour fan, they always have a few on tap. None of them have been disappointing to me. I don't love IPAs, but they have a few IPAs that are pretty popular. The have a good selection of other styles from browns to red, stouts to hefes, so no matter your preference, they will have something for you. Pricing is about average for the Miami craft scene. You are in the $7-$15 range per beer. The expensive ones are very high abv (14%), which is why they are so pricy. The one bummer is that tasters are not always free, so you may end up buying a $10+ beer and not liking it. If a cool craft beer in the coolest part of Miami is your jam, check out J Wakefield. This was my and my husband's favorite brewery stop in the Miami Wynwood area on our recent mini vacation! My husband is a huge Star Wars fan, so we absolutely loved the art and decor inside and outside of the brewery. Beer-wise, we didn't have a bad beer and loved all of them. Loved the atmosphere and all the Star Wars items in there but I'm going to have to give this a 1 Star due to the fact that my family and I got kicked out for playing with the gaming systems for literally 5 minutes being in there. They guy with the beard and glasses told us to leave because they were closing at 9:48... this place closes at 12AM.. I don't know what his deal was and I couldn't even buy a drink nor show my family (who are from out of town) how great of a place this is. Need to train that dude to have a little more respect or just get rid of him for not knowing how to work proper in hospitality. read more

J Wakefield has unique beers and a good environment. I visited on Fourth of July and there was no shortage of seating. Based on their variety of sours, I opted for the Oops I Did it Again and it was tasty! They also have slushie sour beers, which I highly regret not ordering. Unfortunately they do not have food options but there are plenty of restaurants nearby to grab a quick bite. Another downside is they don't offer flights, but you can order 5 oz tasting sizes for a few bucks each. The outdoor seating was not being used because it was so hot but they allowed dogs indoors to accommodate guests. J Wakefield also had plenty of classic beer options, including a good IPA, and the decor was very unique! read more

We decided to stop in here while visiting the Design District and Wynwood Walls. I was trying to pick out some breweries and saw that this one has Star Wars theming, I thought my husband might get a kick out of that. We were here around 2pm on a Saturday and it wasn't overly crowded, which was nice for us. They have a decent amount of seating indoors, as well as an outdoor patio with tables and umbrellas. The decor here is very much in line with the rest of this area, lots of graffiti style artwork. Everything in here is mainly Star Wars related! We each only enjoyed one beer while here. I went for a Hefeweizen with coconut in it. It was ok, I'd say 4 out of 5, I probably would have enjoyed it with a more traditional flavor like raspberry. I was touring wynwood and made a purposeful visit to j Wakefield since I knew it had a strong reputation in the beer community. There was a nice, casual patio for people to drink but I really enjoyed the inside for anyone who is a huge comic book/videogame/Star wars fan because the walls and decor are lined with it. I was surprised by how small the inside was from what I knew about their reputation. It was a really casual environment and the workers genuinely looked like they had fun at work. They were helpful and able to hold conversations with customers. They had some classic video game consoles to play games as well. I ordered 4 beers in a flight and they were all pretty solid if you like sours. They are known for more of their sours and stouts. I had a barrel aged stout aged in michters as well and it was good. They have a small fridge to buy any beers to go as well as some cellar beers. Overall it was a good experience and I'd come back due to the friendly staff and environment. read more

My fiancé and I stumbled upon this place as we were visiting Wynwood. The taproom isn't huge but there is also patio seating out front. We ordered 3 rounds of the 5oz. The blackberry smash was my least favorite- it was too light. I mostly ordered Weiss beers and they were great! Plime Minster was probably my favorite. Fruity but great for Miami heat. My friend ordered some IPAs - his favorite being no hops 4 teachers. Ambience was chill, we went on a weekend and soccer match was going on. Some people brought in their dogs. The art work leading to the door and inside were great. Storm troopers lined the wall outside and inside we were met with comics and super hero's. This place is a must visit in Wynwood for a great beer!! They have a nicely decorated tap room, with an awesome theme (Star Wars). They also have a nice outdoor space for when the weather is nice. They even make beer slushies!!! Which makes for a refreshing grown up treat. read more

I'm not drinking these days, but I still enjoy hanging out at a brewery on a weekend afternoon--I don't exercise or do very much other than eat and drink, so what else is there even to do? My husband and I stopped by J Wakefield Brewing during a brief trip to Miami in November. It was a fun way to pass some time. The place was fun and lively in that hipster brewery way, with a pretty big crowd on a Saturday afternoon and impressively uncomfortable seating. There was a video game/Star Wars sort of theme to the decor. An X-Men cartoon played on one of the TVs. My husband enjoyed a few tasters, and they looked great. If I ever make my way back to Wynwood, I'd like to go back to J Wakefield and try them myself. For now, though, I can recommend this brewery on atmosphere alone. read more

Came here as recommended by someone from FIU brewing science program. I have an interest in craft beer and try to hit a brewery in every city I visit. This brewery has some really cool Star Wars/comic decor in the artsy Wynwood district. I went in for a bit before catching my flight. Overall my experience was so so. It took a while for someone to take my order. In fact a male employee looked directly at me then helped another customer who walked up after me instead. A really sweet female brewtender assisted me instead and was responsive to my requests. I had a small flight of brews that I would consider average. I was really hoping the hefeweizen would be better than it was. In the brewing industry, its not enough to have a nice place with good beers. The customer service has to be there as well. read more

I went down to the Wynwood Market place to see a buddy to talk about sports, but I forgot dude doesn't vend on Fridays, only on the weekend. I had already paid an hour for parking, so I decided to check some of the local businesses I had bookmarked. I saw that J Wakefield Brewing was right around the corner and it has been in my bookmarks for at least a couple of years, so I decided to hop on over. Walking into this place I was totally unimpressed, it's tiny with no personality or "micro-brewery" atmosphere at all. I walked up to the bartender and played dumb to test them out, " I asked him do you guys make your own beer?". Dude just pointed at their drafts, threw down a menu and walked away, eventually disappearing in some back room. There was no - "Hey this is a microbrewery, we brew our own beers etc etc etc" There was no - " Hey this is our menu, this is our this and that beer..." There were no pretty girls working there, no one wants to see dudes, at least have one pretty girl. Another dude popped out and had a long side conversation with some wannabe hipster dude. I was finally able to order the Ginger Yum-yum. First of all the beer is served in a small glass, dude for real? You make your own beer for crying out loud, serve the beer in a large chilled mug. $8 for a small glass of draft beer? Are you kidding me buddy? What is this Marlin Stadium prices? This beer was more like Ginger Bum-bum, it tasted like chemically laden crap, like a Budweiser. The ginger didn't taste anything like ginger, it tasted like a cheap ginger flavoring or extract. It's also supposed to have a peachy flavor, they must have forgotten to put the peachy "flavoring" in their crappy beer. Waste of time and money. I drank this crap in less than 2 minutes and I walked out. It didn't even give me a buzz, or a relaxed feeling. P.S. I went back and read through the other bad reviews, it seems they all had the same or similar experience I had. read more

Cool little brewery full of Star Wars decor! Came here on a Saturday afternoon and there were just a few groups of people inside. You seat yourself and order at the bar; no table service. They have a great selection of beers! Plenty of sours, IPAs, stouts, darks, lights, etc! They do not offer flights but you have the option of ordering a 5oz or 13oz.
