I've been back to Jon a few times now. Had him replace front struts on a 2009 CRV and patch a leaking tire. Tire had leak on rim, repaired and reset even though the rim has started to rust. Most shops probably would have recommended and sold me new rims, but they patched me up and sent me on my way. Struts are always hard. OEM are WAY expensive and quality outside of OEM is hard to find. Jon does his homework and set me up with a great pair of struts at a reasonable price! read more

J1 is great! Let me start out by saying I come from a family where we do our own work on our cars. The few times I really need to go to a shop usually end up being a huge hassle, especially as a female trying to convince a mechanic I'm not an idiot about cars. In this case, I needed my wheels aligned. I probably called a dozen places before J1. Most quoted around $100 for alignment. The first shop I went to told me I needed an additional $500 worth of work done to replace my control arms (not just the bushings, which makes NO sense) AND new tires before they'd even do the alignment. I told them absolutely no way and left. Finally, I ended up with an appointment at J1. They were FANTASTIC. Fixed the front alignment. Explained everything about what they did and couldn't do b/c of the make and model of my car. John realized I understood the mechanics of the what they did and even gave me some advice for when I replace my struts again. He gave me the print out for all the measurements, including for the back tires, which couldn't be adjusted, but it's nice to know where they're at. And the best part is they only charged $55!!! (no extra charge for measuring the back wheels) This is a no nonsense shop and they know what they're doing. They're not going to overcharge you. Next time I need work done at a garage, I know who I'm going to trust to do it! read more

In April of 2014 My partner Rick and I moved to Lombard/Chicago from NYC after the move we needed the truck looked over and services. John did a full oil and fluid change and a check over of my prized Ridgeline 223,765 miles and still running great. Months later a friend was using it while he looked for a new car and screwed up the transmission. The Honda dealership wanted to replace the transmission without even looking at it..I didnt have an extra 2500.00 laying around. I called John on a Sunday and he told me to tow it to the shop and he woudl look it over. I got the truck to john and in 3 days I had my truck back running 95% like new. I didn't expect 100% and John was upfront and honest about what he could do and not do. Another time my friend thought he was doing a nice thing and took it to Merlin 200,000 Miles Shop for brakes and oil change. The charged him 3 times what the brakes should have been and when they put the oil plug back in they stripped the threads so now we had an oil leak. They made it almost impossible to take it back to them and also questioned if it was them that did it. They are the only ones to have taken the oil plug out and put it back in 8 months. I took the truck to John and dropped it off while he was closed. He checked it out and called me. They needed to replace the oil pan (that is where the plug is). and the gasket and do a full oil change. Once again John came to the rescue. My truck has been sitting since I moved to Chicago Dec 2015. I have a small toy that I drive daily, a 2013 Honda CR-Z with Nav. I am moving the Ridgeline closer to Chicago so I dropped it off last week for John to look it over and tell me if it needs anything other then a oil change. If he tells me its in good shap I might give it to my Sister In-Law in TN. I trust Johns judgement on my and my friends vehicles. Anytime a friend needs service I tell them it is worth taking it out to Lombard. The shop is about 9 blocks form the Metra so getting back to Chicago is no problem (its a 5.00 Uber or a 15 min walk to the Metra and 5.00 for the Metra back to Chicago Ogilvie Transportation Center. A few weeks ago a car of mine broke down one evening. I don't have a regular mechanic that I use and have had the worst experiences with mechanics in the past. When my car broke down down it was after normal business hours but on the website for J1 I located a late night number that I can text. I texted the number and got a quick response. I was able to have road side assistance drop my car off in their lot and it was fixed within 24 hours. There was work needed on the car but I was give the option to just get it running. Mediocre service and attitude. My oil change was done so sloppily I had to go back multiple times to correct. Oil filter used is lowest possible grade. Then the owner's attitude. He tells me I'm incompetent when I provide some repair suggestions for my old car. He acts like he's doing me a favor in repairing my car. I'm not going back. read more

A week prior to me having time for an oil change, new brakes and struts my husband randomly stopped in at J1 for an oil change and tire rotation. He told me really liked the work done and the quote given for additional maintenance was very fair for his 2009 truck. My husband felt he could really trust the owner of the shop so he suggested we take the cars there for the next repairs. I called and the owner was patient and knowledgeable, he didn't seem annoyed or bothered which has happened to me when I've called for repairs to other shops in the past. When I dropped the car off he told me it would be a few hours so I walked around for a bit and then came back to the waiting room. The repairs were done earlier than expected and my price was very fair. The owner was kind and cracked jokes as I waited, as a woman I really needed that assurance and trust when someone is working on my car. I don't want to feel that I'm being overcharged or my car is being tampered with. I truly don't get that feeling at this shop. Everyone seemed kind and worked well together. We have since done more work on the cars with honest quotes and my 2011 Camry has never run better. It was after the last repair that I looked online at their reviews, I've never seen a car repair shop with 5 Star reviews!!! My husband cannot sing the praises of Jon and his staff more! He drove his car to J1 Auto when a sound that his 2001 Yukon was making grew increasingly louder...mind you, it was later in the afternoon and he didn't have an appointment. Even though Jon was noticeably busy (the phone was ringing off the hook), he took a listen to our car and then threw it on the lift to confirm his suspicion. The bearings were shot and the pulley was busted; Jon looked at my husband and was completely baffled as to how this car was even driving! Jon was booked for the day and suggested my husband leave the car overnight and that it would be ready for pick up in the morning - he even offered to arrange a ride home. But when my husband explained that we live downtown and he works in Lombard, Jon said not to worry and that he'll squeeze it in - he warned my husband that it would be a wait but the car would get done today. 45 minutes later, the car was ready to go...yes, you read correctly, 45 minutes! My husband was pleased beyond words - even though he was ready and willing to wait for hours, instead was driving home in less than an hour! Jon was more than reasonably priced and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. We live in the city but will gladly use J1 Auto for all of our future automotive needs. I was told by a tire shop that my 25-year-old car needed a wheel alignment and so I took it here and it turned out it was way out of alignment, beyond what testing equipment could measure initially. Jon came in before normal hours on a Saturday and worked twice as long as it takes for a normal alignment until it was perfect yet didn't charge me any extra. Also, after I told him I planned to put new tires on it soon he said to stop by after that so that he could give it quick re-check for no charge. I understand J1 will be moving across the street.
