I'm from the Bay Area and had a complete brake failure on I-80. My brakes were not fully reassembled at my local mechanics before I left town and the caliper worked loose, causing a brake shoe to fall out and all the brake fluid to leak out. The folks at Jack Dane didn't know me, but couldn't have been more welcoming. They diagnosed the problem within an hour of my arrival, clearly explained the needed repair, performed the repair, and stored my car until I could return. I recently took my SUV here after seeing good reviews. I don't work far from here so I figured it was a strong and convenient choice for some concerns I wanted looked into. Now I will be going out of my way to use a different shop after my disappointing experience here. After a $200 examination, I was told that I had some kind of major oil leak, and that I needed an alignment, as well as recommended I replace the steering gear box. Oil Leak - Since the tech made it sound like it was really bad, and yet I hadn't seen any signs of a leak beforehand, I asked him about that. He suggested I check my driveway. I responded that I already do, and it's completely clean. His response? "Maybe you just haven't noticed". Well, I checked when I got home, and every day for weeks after this appointment, and still... zero oil spots. My SUV is parked in my clean driveway 80% of the time and it's still clean as a whistle. The alignment - My SUV does not pull in any direction. At least not more than any average car might on uneven roads. I've driven vehicles that needed an alignment before, and this isn't that. The Steering box - They quoted $2,500 to replace my steering box. The break down was $1,400 for labor, and $1,100 for parts. The average cost to replace that same part in my exact model SUV anywhere else: between $800 and $900, for parts and labor. You do the math. Anyhow, after my appointment here I made time that weekend to leave my SUV with another shop that had come recommended by someone else. The owner of that shop, a man who's been in the auto business for literally decades, said he was appalled by the quote Jack Dane gave me. I paid another $200 for him to do his own examination. Guess what? No alignment necessary, steering box is completely fine, and no oil leak found(just average seepage, cleaned up no problem). Want more proof that these guys are not to be trusted? The initial reason I brought it in was because the transmission seemed to slip a little, mostly when my SUV was cold. My particular model doesn't have a dipstick for the trans fluid so I wanted an expert to check all of that out. The Jack Dane tech noted on my invoice: "Observed trans fluid at recommended levels". Guess what? The other tech, with more experience, showed me that the trans fluids were actually almost 2 full quarts LOWER than the recommended levels. He even brought it over to another tech who is even more experienced with transmissions and that guy confirmed it was definitely too low and likely causing what I was experiencing. He topped off my trans fluid for me, and guess what again? The cold slipping issue completely vanished. A month later and it's running good as new, and still no oil spots anywhere I park. DO NOT trust this shop. read more

I needed AC diagnosis and recharging when I was new in town and didn't have a mechanic. I'm so glad I found these guys. I think it was Ed (?) whom I worked with and he was so helpful. He knew it was a newly purchased used car and he checked some other things for me though I hadn't asked him to. I'm so pleased with the service and price I'll definitely go back to them. I'm newer to the sac area and have been trying to find a solid auto mechanic in my area. As we all know, it's hard to find someone you trust, especially as a woman. Adam kept me informed of the process & costs from beginning to end with thorough detail and explanations for everything. As someone who doesn't know much about cars, it was nice to be able to see the breakdown and do my own research before making decisions. I didn't feel like they were trying to upsale and make a quick buck off me. I mean it's downtown Sacramento and everything is typically over priced so that's nothing new though when I received my inspection I automatically took it to somewhere more affordable in my budget and I come back to him and ask does he know anyone else who does work on vehicles like him possibly within a different price range and he says no and In my head I would've thought mechanics network with other businesses in their profession that way they could refer customers elsewhere if pricing is more flexible there. Thought hey it's a car which is like a child and I understand the need to get the money because it's a capitalistic society. Though one thing that made me uncomfortable is I'm assuming that the lady was their receptionist however she asked when I needed to use the restroom did I need her to watch my child and I said no even if there wasn't enough room I'd have said no because they're a stranger though still I'd recommend this place for inspections otherwise for work needed shop around first as you should do with any mechanic. read more

As already stated by others, this friendly guy offers perfect service not seen for sure in any of the auto dealerships I have visited, who treat clients like flies to swat without respect or concern. This man focuses on the details and finds the missing parts and hidden problems, and most impressive of all, keeps you informed all along the way. Amazing! And his careful and honest analysis saved me from buying what I was sure I needed, a new transmission for 2-4 thousand dollars!. Yikes! But instead he discovered I need only a new muffler system, one fourth the price with enough left over to run my aging Honda for another five years of bumpy roads in the nearby mountains! The folks at Jack Dane Auto did a fantastic job with my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT. They performed all the necessary checks & replacements for my tune-up, but let me know what wasn't needed. So many repair places put their profit ahead of your pocket-book, but not Jack Dane! I also had an occasional revving of my engine that I had checked 2 other places. One place couldn't find it, another told me I would have to replace an expensive part. At Jack Dane they let me know several possible causes & how we could test for each & what the costs would be. It felt like we were on the same team. After our discussion I was ready for a month or more if trials, but they found a bad coil in the ignition on the 1st try (it's been a couple months, so don't hate of I got the part name wrong). Overall, I paid less to have it fixed with Jack Dane than I did to get a misdiagnosis & no fix at another shop. Thank you Jack Dane Auto! These folks have been servicing my cars for more than 15 years now. I've owned a Dodge Durango (which one of their mechanics purchased from me when it was time to upgrade), and two Ford Explorers. They do top notch service, NEVER recommend service you don't need (even when I've come in telling them I thought I needed a costly repair) and truly know their craft. Brought my newly purchased 2017 Dodge Journey in for inspection of check engine light and repair. They charge almost 200.00 for diagnostic. They repaired the Ignition coil and gave me a list of things that would be in need of repair. Didn't catch the heater core hoses were going bad. More than outstanding customer service. I was involved in a car accident with a drunk driver and my car needed an inspection in order to be deemed a total loss or not. We were stranded with a bad starter on a holiday weekend Friday. Called Steve at Jack Danes. Towed the car over at 10 AM. He put a guy on it almost immediately. The tech did a total pro diagnosis, had the part delivered by courier and even suggested some points of interest to visit while we waited. We were back on the road by 1:15 PM. However, their service has been awesome so I plan to use them as my go-to auto service. Their comprehensive inspections that provide photos and videos of your car are really great for better understanding any issues that may arise. Pricing has been fair as well. It can be difficult to find a trustworthy auto repair spot, but this is a good one. read more
