As we do every year, we celebrate our wedding anniversaries in various cities around AK. This year was Girdwood and Homer. Heading down to Homer we stopped in Girdwood for the night. Due to the crush of guests, we couldn't get a table so we opted for take-out. We took a chance on the Bibimap (sp?). It was an appropriate dish for an at home meal, but without the heated bowl it comes in. On the way back from Homer we stopped again in Girdwood, this time with a reservation! Our server seated us in the romantic Garden Room", which we always opt for. This garden room is cozy, beautiful and the guests seated there have always been friendly and interesting. We all seem to treat that room like the proverbial "family" room! We started of with a tasting of a wine we wern't familiar with, and which I still can't remember its name! Our server (Blanca) was a true four star waitress. Intelligent, friendly, observant of our needs, and even those that we didn't know we needed! She took the time, even though the restaurant was packed, to clarify the menu, listen to our bragging about our 59th anniversary. She made the whole evening more joyful that we had even hoped it would be. We ordered the Filet Mignon, as per her Recommendation, and topped it with a bottle of Silver Oak. The meat, Blanca explained to us, was from a specific farm in the US. We've eaten lots of filets in lots of restaurants, but this one was right at the top of the heap. At our age this is "dangerous" as we could opt more often for the beef, than the healthier foods Jack Sprat has to offer. Dessert was the "simple" chocolate mouse. Yep, lieke everything else we ordered that night, it was an excellent topper off. We've had several meals over the years at Jack Sprats. We had a mixed experience at Jack Sprat. Service timing was rough. It took over an hour from ordering to get our main dishes. About 1.5 hours from when we were seated. We did get the dip bread appetizer about 15 minutes after ordering which helped. Then we waited another full hour after finishing it before our food arrived. The food was inconsistent. The chow fun noodles were undercooked. More like al dente pasta which does not work for a Chinese dish. The burgers came with fries that were cold and hard. They did fix that quickly and brought fresh fries which were much better. The wagyu burger was the biggest disappointment. The meat tasted very gamey. That is not what you expect from wagyu which should be rich and buttery. I ended up trying to cover the taste with toppings just to eat it. Not enjoyable. Our child did enjoy her grass fed beef burger and had no complaints. The atmosphere is great. Live music adds a nice touch. We also liked the shop next door and the outdoor wood fire. We like this place and wanted it to be a great experience. The food and timing just missed the mark this time. Hoping they improve because the setting is really nice. read more

A delicious and special location that's great for a couple or group with different dietary restrictions but a shared love for good food. We had the salmon special and tofu bibimbap and both dishes were exceptional. The gochujang sauce was spicy and sweet with the bibimbap and the salmon was perfectly cooked - the crispy skin was amazing. Also had the Black Diamond sundae - amazing. Alaska spots get a +.5 star bias because the limited options here. This is a beautiful spot in Alyeska that serves up wonderful, fresh, high quality fare. Yams ($14) as an appetizer were wonderful, and had a nice cilantro dip. I had the Captains Catch (black cod, $48) and it was also delicious. The fish was super fresh and not at all fishy. I had a bite of the Pasta ($37) and it was also great. Prices are on par with higher end dining. The interior is gorgeous, rustic-cozy meets modern. I ordered the blackened Alaska sablefish, one of Alaska's signature fish, and it was magnificent. The fish was incredibly buttery, perfectly cooked, and lightly finished with sea salt, allowing its natural flavors to shine. Every bite reminded me why sablefish is considered one of Alaska's finest seafood delicacies. My wife and son both had the meat burger, and it was outstanding. It was juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection--no ordinary burger. The quality of the beef really stood out and made it one of the best burgers we've had. The dessert was unforgettable. The olive oil chocolate cake with sea salt, layered with a luscious vanilla cream cheese filling, was simply to die for. Rich without being heavy, beautifully balanced, and one of the finest desserts we've had in a long time. What impressed me just as much as the food was the people. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Franz, the owner, who shared that he moved here from Michigan 25 years ago and has never looked back. His passion for Alaska, hospitality, and exceptional food is evident throughout the restaurant. That same passion is shared by the entire team. Excellent customer service, first off (10/10). Unfortunately very mediocre, under seasoned food. I heard good things about this place- by people that live in Girdwood- told me it's their favorite restaurant. But I wasn't impressed. The Waygu burger was a 5.5/10 and the fries were 2/10. Both very under seasoned. I tried my friend's nachoes and dessert- both which I didn't like. Just not enough flavor for any of the meals. Promotional material for ski town fare usually irritates me. The food is almost always a disappointment, the concept usually isn't congruent. I avoid reading it these days. We were ready to write off the culinary scene of Girdwood, and, really, Alaska as a whole, until we climbed up the wait list at Jack Sprat and ate dinner there. Jack Sprat has a diverse, well-executed menu with good service and reasonable prices. This was the best filet I've had in years. This restaurant is in elite company, especially in ski-focused ski towns. Really enjoyed the meal, might return. read more

Amazing staff and service. There was a mix up with our reservation and the manager stepped in and immediately addressed the issue. We then had a wine glass break and the waitress quickly stepped in and replaced the meal. Highly recommend this restaurant and hats off to the manager. You made our evening. read more

We had dinner here after spending the evening at the Nordic Spa and this really was the cherry on top of a great night. We came in about 30 mins before closing but never felt rushed. Our server was friendly and quick to take our order. I won't say no to anything with a fried egg on top, so I got the bibimbap. It came out so hot you could hear the rice crisping in the stone pot. It took a long while for it to cool -- my fiance had nearly finished his burger by the time I could take actual full bites! I heated up the leftovers the next morning and it was soooo good. We were seated by the kitchen and enjoyed watching all the desserts being made. Unfortunately we had no room to order any, but will definitely plan on it on our next visit here. read more

There's a small, super cool interior and great patio spot with a small bar, fire pits and chill live music (when we were there). They're routinely packed and reservations are required (or that's the impression we got) and hard to find during normal meal hours. It looks like they're only open for dinner. This review is specifically for the very beginning of the visit and what we were presented with. This is a very snooty and snobby place at least that's what it seems like from the individual at the front. She made very little eye contact- seated people before us and was not forthcoming with information. I had to pull information out of her by asking her if there's a seat available for us, what is the waiting time and honestly, we were greeted with a very standoffish feeling. The girl in front with the tattoos needs to be either trained or humbled. Completely offputting and we ended up going to Basecamp where everyone is friendly welcoming and the food is absolutely delicious. read more

This place is always hopping and can be difficult to get a seat due to no reservations allowed. My husband and I have been a few times and the service is always good. The sweet potato appetizer is always a hit. However, the entrees have not always been consistent. Still good, but the first time we went there was significantly better than the second. My husband enjoys the burger. The bibimbap was pretty good. Not a fan of the peanut noodles though. It's a big portion but so heavy and oily without much flavor. read more

I would describe this place in Alaska is ridiculous. I was visiting with my three children from Washington DC and was trying away because there was no room by a small blonde woman. Really? I've never turned away at any restaurant, whether in San Francisco or in Washington DC. She informed us that there was large parties coming, and she couldn't serve us, baffles me. Her attitude was inappropriate, and we ended up going down the road and having a very good experience. My suggestion is to go to another restaurant if you have a choice when you're visiting here in this town. Oh no, did they change management or something? This is usually a favorite place, but our last visit left me feeling disenchanted. The Cheesy Schmool appetizer was dangerously too hot when it was served to us. Server (Carter?) didn't warn us, and the marinara sauce burnt my mouth. The focaccia bread that came with the Schmool was burnt black in places and shouldn't have been served to a guest. The Peanut Pan dish I usually love was lacking in flavor. It was just ok, but I was missing a depth of flavor. My baby got the "Oodles of Noodles" off the kids menu but the pasta wasn't made fresh for her, it seemed hard like it'd been sitting around for a while. The butter sauce was icky. She didn't eat any of it. The most distressing thing was the King Dong cake they're practically famous for is now different! I swear the filling used to have a lightweight delicious mascarpone and now it just tastes like dense-ish sweetened cream cheese. This is a mom-gripe, but I really wish they'd install a baby changing table in the bathrooms. Even just one? It's kind of horrible putting your sweet baby on the dirty floor when a diaper needs changing. Haven't given up hope on JS yet. Maybe our next time here will be back on track? read more

Definitely one of the best restaurants in the area. My friend did order a steak that was supposed to be medium rare and it came out very rare and raw so naturally he sent it back. Not a huge deal I know that happens. I got the Bibimbap and it was alright. I've had really good ones at Korean restaurants before and what was strange and I almost didn't say anything because I didn't wanna be rude was that I didn't get the sauce that comes with it until I asked for it. I didn't know if it came with the sauce or not so I didn't ask until I was about halfway done with it. The sauce made it much better. I also had the butternut squash soup, and it was very good. We go to Jack Sprat about once a year. Just some things to consider to manage expectations: No reservations and limited hours, so there is often a longer wait than what is usual around the area. Very expensive for what you get, and a small but varied menu. Only beer and wine. The food is decent, and I can definitely appreciate that they try to source local ingredients, vegan options, and have a rotating special. I believe I've had everything on their current menu and it's all been fine. The ambiance is nice with low lighting and open windows. Omgosh this place, so yummy and what a great location. I absolutely love their outdoor fire pit where you can sit and wait for your table. I like their little gift shop too. Inside the restaurant is gorgeous. It's hard to explain but it has an upscale rustic Alaska feeling to it. The hostess was darling and the server was very helpful. The food is delicious like lower 48 good! Sorry Alaska just being real here. Try the yam fries AMAZING, the avocado salsa, the wagyu beef burger and the vegan nachos! You're welcome! Meh. This place is okay. I really liked my peanut pan. Kinda heavy on the sauce, but good. My kids thought their dinners were fine, but no one was praising their food though. The focaccia was realllllly gummy. It should be way lighter and airier than this. Even my 13 yr old was like "Well, this focaccia is really mid." Yeah. She's not lying. It ended with King Dong cake. In my oldest kid's words "This king dong cake is giving off small D energy." There aren't a lot of choices in Girdwood. Very popular place, so when you put your name on the waitlist, expect to wait a little bit. There is ample seating outside with a lovely fire pit so while waiting for a table is actually very cozy and enjoyable The star of the show for me was the vegan nachos. I personally am not vegan, but this appetizer is so delicious. I think even the most devoted carnivore would enjoy it. Packed with flavor and just the right amount of spiciness, the nachos were my menu favorite by far I also ordered the peanut pan noodles, which I enjoyed and ended up having enough leftover for a second meal later. I would've enjoyed being offered the ability to make it more spicy though. Ian was our sever and he took great care of us for the evening making great drink and food recommendations and made us feel very welcome. Such an adorable restaurant. It feels like you're dining in a cozy well-decorated cabin. The Nacho Libre app was amazing! Best vegan nachos we've ever had. The walnut meat was so full of flavor and had a great consistency. The Peanut Pan was sweet, creamy, and savory. It was deliciously peanut buttery and contained plenty of veggies. Fantastic all around. Super cute place, there was a wood fire burning in the courtyard which was nice. We got there around 8pm and they close at 9. We waited about 5 mins to be seated. Everyone from hostess to waitress were extremely friendly and welcoming. Service was prompt and attentive. Three sisters app was almost gone when I took the pic. It's a cold white bean, squash and corn salad atop bean and cheese pupusas. It was creamy and tangy from a green salsa. It was fresh and hardy. The soup de jour was a wild mushroom and wild rice topped with Calabrian chili oil. It had veggies in it and was like a light stew. I loved the flavor and the chili oil left a little numbing of the lips which was a surprise. I had the Alaska Man burger. It was awesome, love the 2 Pattie's and bacon jam. They didn't ask about doneness when I ordered, but it came out a nice medium rare, bordering on medium. Fries were nice and crispy. My friend got the bibimbap with steak instead of pork. It was huge and comes in a HOT stone bowl. You mix it up and it kind of keeps cooking like fajitas. It was delicious. Really a cute gem in this little mountain town. Fresh locally sourced ingredients and great balance in all the dishes we had. Definitely the best food we ate while in Girdwood.
