Worst dining experience in my life at Girdwood's Chair 5 tonight. Six of our party of 9 were served relatively promptly. Three others -- our guests from Mexico -- were not served at all. About the time the first 6 were finishing, waiter came over and told one of the three that they didn't have the ingredients to cook her coconut shrimp dinner and asked if she would like to order something else. Sadly, all this woman wanted when first ordering was a bowl of clam chowder, but we were told they were out when we got there. Also, no tortilla chips for nachos. She graciously changed order to a burger because it would be fast. Burger came out and the other two had STILL not been served. It was 45 minutes after the first six were served and 15 minutes after everyone had finished. The last 2 canceled their orders. Bill came out and they rightly didn't charge for the last 3, including the burger that had to be reordered. But they added a 20 percent gratuity for a large party! Food, bad quality and badly prepared. We had lunch here today at 2:30 pm. Burger is less than 8 oz (as advertised). Burger meat blend itself is dry. Burger overcooked. Waiter said all cooked to medium---not this one. It was not seasoned. Bacon strip was cold. French fries weren't enough, warm, looked like the leftover from the bottom of the pile. Each burger is $20!...c'mon!!! No hostess, appeared in 10 minutes. Seating took another 10 minutes. She and waiter were nice and apologetic. Came here on a Sunday afternoon for some lunch. Upon entry we could see a number of open tables, however none of them were cleared off from the previous patrons. Therefore, when we arrived we had to wait 15 minutes for the bartender to come out and clear off all of the tables for us to be seated. The atmosphere was loud and there were several kids running around the restaurant screaming. The server/bartender took 20 minutes to come take our order and we noticed him taking orders from other tables around us that had come after we had arrived. We had to wait an additional 25 minutes for the food to be served. The "chicken Alfredo" was horrendous, I have never seen that much oil at the bottom of a plate of chicken Alfredo. So, after reading mixed reviews, but also taking a local friend recommendation, I went to dinner her with mid level expectations. Granted, I had done a pretty serious hike earlier today, and was pretty hungry, BUT. I just had a really great experience at this restaurant. , definitely above average pub food I just had good old-fashioned wings, which honestly we're good enough that I almost regretted not ordering a second set and then a good old-fashioned cheeseburger, which was clearly handmade and extremely solid. Not sure the origin of the blue cheese dressing, but it had actual chunks of blue cheese as a garnish on top, nice touch and everything just tasted fresh and well made.. I also had two gin and tonics, and the waitress was very nice and present enough, but not overbearing. the place itself was a pleasant mountain town hangout vibe, busyish, but not loud, local but friendly. If I was still in town I would go back for more wings and gin, but will have to wait until next time. read more

Big downgrade from what this place used to be. Apparently the restaurant has changed ownership very recently. We have come twice this past week or so, and everything has been below average across the board. We got shrimp tacos and the shrimp isn't seasoned. Like, at all. Nor is it grilled... I think it may have been poached and chilled, then put the in the taco. The shells are raw tortillas, not homemade, not hot. The tacos are loaded with raw largely chunked pieces of red onion. Terribly sad dish. I do not recommend. On our last visit we got a pizza, The Italian I think. It was served to us stale and COLD. Like, maybe it had been sitting around for an hour. I would've sent it back but we were with a large group of people and I just didn't want to spoil the mood. The waitstaff have been humdrum. Not much etiquette, somewhat blasé. The last young man we got did not care enough or was simply inept in the task of splitting a 3-way bill. The final straw for us was when my husband got sick for 2 days likely from the dirty beer taps here. I had a good time grabbing the Thai chicken pizza here. The waitress was very quiet and honored our request for a side of extra peanut sauce. The pizza itself was very good, but my one point of improvement is that the texture of the chicken was a little dry, almost as if it had been formerly frozen. Overall, it seems like people in Girdwood have a lot of fun hanging out here, grabbing a bite, watching sports, and playing pool. It almost gives off the energy of a third space. read more

We visited Chair 5 for lunch, during the winter season. Their interior is woody and uniquely Alaskan. We felt comfortable with our additional needs son in tow. Music was bumpin', which further added to the great vibes. Our waitress was accommodating, while also allowing us space to breathe. We ordered hot buffalo wings well done and with zero complaints. We ordered halibut chunks that came with all the right dipping sauces and a few of their chicken strips meals. Highly recommend Chair 5 for a family friendly meal. Can't wait to return. read more

So, this has been a stop for us when coming or going to Anchorage for a quarter century now. And we stopped there once again a few weeks ago,. The food has always been good. On this last visit we got some wings and a deep-dish pizza. Both were cooked well, although the wings were a little small. I realize they sell them by weight, not by the number of wings, but a larger grade makes a better wing. Still, they were cooked and sauced well and we enjoyed them and our pizza. What we did not enjoy was having to listen to the staff's loud conversation for literally our entire visit. I don't care when your vacation is, who is covering for you while you are gone, what music festival you are going to, how much you had to drink last night, etc. Put some music on or go talk in the back, or .... just anything but a full-volume conversation at the bar about how great you are. If you are so very important to the business, why were you able to stand around talking about yourself for a full forty-five minutes, nonstop, at top volume? It just feels disrespectful to your guests. I was there to have lunch with my wife, not to listen to some twenty-something bartender rambling on and on and on about his life and the schedule at the restaurant. Do better, Chair 5. read more

I'm extremely disappointed to have to take a full 2 stars off my review, but after our visit today, my opinion of Chair 5 is notably diminished. First thing we noticed - the menus. Different items on the slimmed down menu. No fun little amusing paragraph at the beginning. What's going on here? We ordered, i asked for orange juice with no ice, and mussels from the appetizer menu, with a side of fries, husband got the all meat pizza with added olives. I am given - of course I am given - orange juice with ice. I fished it out with my fork, and threw it in my water glass. Even so, it already tasted watery and not proper orange juice tangy. When the server came with the food, my husband asked if the owner had sold the place. The server said yes, and that it was now owned by the same person that owns The Inn at Whittier, and BaseCamp. Having had a dreadful dinner in the Inn At Whittier, when i visited as a tourist in 2010, it made my heart sink a little. That's awful because the Inn At Whittier is beautifully located, but the dinner we had was - and i would rarely use this word in conjunction with any restaurant - tasteless and bland. So it was with trepidation that i began to eat my dinner. I was embarrassed for the server having to take away our plates, with food that we had barely touched. However, these were big, juicy, plump delicious mussels, in a fairly tasty, well seasoned broth, but i feel it necessary to criticize on a couple of issues. I was not given a bowl in which to put my empty shells. I wasn't given the correct silverware to eat the mussels. I wasn't given either a spoon to eat the broth, or bread to dip into it, and the bowl was so wide, that to have tipped it up to drink it, would have been hideously messy. But that's what i did, in order to give the broth a fair review. In addition 4 or 5 mussels were unopened, and 2 were broken - everyone knows not to eat those, so i feel that they should have been removed from the plate prior to serving, and replaced with fully open mussels. Fully opened mussels, a few pieces of French bread, a spoon and an empty bowl for spent shells would have increased my rating. The fries seem different. I think they're a different type than the previous owner used. I don't have an issue with them, they tasted fine. Not amazing, just fine. Elevated by the Jalapeno House sauce i always get on the side. My husband had nothing good to say about his pizza, and was quite grumpy about it, he only ate half, and didn't even bother taking the rest home which he usually did in the past. One of the meats was a type of beef, he said it tasted like taco beef, and he objected to the crust, he said it was not quite as cooked as he liked. I asked him to show me underneath, and it didn't look raw, but neither did it look golden and toasty either. When i probed him what was wrong with it, he couldn't put his finger on it, and just said "It's different, not as good as it was" What can i say? He's picky about his pizza. Dang I am going to miss my Coconut Shrimp Salad, Cheesy Fries, Spinach and Artichoke Dip - these were all solid core menu items that you could rely on being of consistent quality. The new menu seems quite seafood-centric, and there's calamari, crab, halibut all featured. I hope i find a new dish to love, when we go back. read more

My burger was alright but the cold fries didn't do me any favors. My cousin got chicken Nachos and the chicken looked like it was from a can. We also ordered Buffalo wings as an appetizer and they were hardly coded in sauce. Overall I thought this place was very average. This restaurant is always busy and packed! And for good reason. Expect a possible long wait for a table. The staff were great and did the best they possibly could do, but they are doing a LOT. So be patient. Once we got sat at our table, our server was quick to assist us and get our orders started. The food even came out much faster than I expected. My bf had the mushroom Swiss burger with fries. The salad is HUGE! I needed a box to take it home. There were plenty of the ingredients they used on it and it tasted fine, but not amazing. Mine was missing the peanuts. My bf said the burger was okay and the fries were great! Our server was decent. My favorite halibut sandwich in Alaska (so far). I have been to a lot of places around the state, and other than fish myself or friends have caught, i'd say that the blackened halibut sandwich here is the best I've had. The deep dish pizza is also incredible. And let us just talk about the vibe. It's always busy, the bar and the pool table bring a lovely crowd, and it's also very family friendly. Large tables are available, there's an old fashioned juke box, just a grand old time here. I highly recommend Chair 5, and I bring every single person that comes to visit me in Anchorage. Also the calamari is thicker strips, which I like a lot more in comparison to the baby circles and little squids. read more

The pizza has gone downhill. I understand they were out of quite a few items this day, like burger patties and pepperoni. We asked if the pepperoni can be substituted with Canadian bacon.. They mixed up the order so badly. We wanted half blackened chicken and half Cadillac. The side that had pepperoni had no meat at all. The side that should have blackened chicken had no chicken on it, but some ham instead. It was doughy and took a long time to be delivered and the server couldn't tell the sides apart. It really was a shame to have subpar pizza after going on a 6 mile hike. We were just tired and hungry so we didn't tell the waitress how unsatisfied we were with the pizza. This place is definitely a bit of a dive, but it's pretty family friend and has beautiful views. The building has a bit of the alpine lodge feel crossed with a greasy spoon pub/diner. We showed up on a Saturday at 1pm on a holiday weekend. The place looked pretty empty but it appeared like only two servers were working so they were hustling. The service was pleasant and surprisingly quick. The food was great, at least compared to options back at the Alyeska Hotel. The halibut fish and chips were tasty and cooked perfectly. We had a few different items tonight, but I don't think we got the star of the menu. From what it looked like, the deep dish pizza looked really good. We got: Salmon and Clam Chowder - very good. I would get it again. Fish n chips - I would not get this again. Fries were OK (my daughter liked them) and the fish needed a little more flavor. Their online menu is incorrect. The new ownership hasn't made the effort to update since it was purchased last summer. The person answering the phone was annoyed because i was ordering things that weren't on their current menu (which isn't updated online). I was hoping for nachos which they only do on weekends now. I tried to order a taco salad which they also don't offer. So I got carne asada tacos and they were so sad. The meat wasn't even heated up. Their mandarin chicken salad was SO pathetic looking. The only things that looked remotely edible was a kids Mac and cheese and the pizza. I won't come back since the service was weird and rude and the food was seriously lacking. I went down here with a friend earlier today on a short road trip from Anchorage this Memorial Day weekend. Chair 5 is located in the Girdwood Town Square across from the post office on Lindblad Ave. The Town Square was teeming with tourists visiting the local shops and cafes as well as the weekend Farmers Market just behind the restaurant. It was noontime as the crowds started to grow gradually as we decided to head to Chair 5 before the lunch rush started. The dining area is a casual sports bar with a rustic look and a sit down counter in the middle as you enter the restaurant. Novelty items and memorabilia adorn the walls in every corner and TV screens are displayed on both ends of the dining room. This would be an ideal place to catch a game during the NFL season. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by an employee who gave us a choice of seats anywhere in the dining room. We chose a table opposite the bar that provided a great view of the surrounding mountains in the background. The menu provides sandwiches, salads, burgers, soups, as well as appetizers like Halibut Bites with fries and Buffalo Wings but their specialty is Deep Dish Square Pizza which the restaurant has been widely known for years. We only waited a few minutes to look through the menu before a friendly server took our order. I decided to buck my low carb diet today and went for the Blackened Chicken Deep Dish Pizza with olives, red onions, tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, feta cheese, and parsley. The server gave us a heads-up that the Deep Dish Pizza had a wait time of 45 minutes. I was reluctant to order that until she said that we were one of their first orders of the day and that it would be a lesser wait time. I said that was totally fine and went ahead with it. My friend decided to try the Swiss and Mushroom Burger with their soup of the day: Tomato Bisque. The wait was a reasonable 15-20 minutes for our orders to arrive at our table and I was happy that I didn't have to wait for the aforementioned 45 minutes on the pizza. My friend enjoyed her burger and it was a large one at that. The ingredients were meticulously placed on top of the burger and cut perfectly straight in half for easier handling. My Deep Dish Pizza was absolutely delicious. A generous amount of melted cheese blended in with chunks of seasoned blackened chicken, parsley, cilantro, and a good amount of garlic. The feta cheese was a good addition and complemented more flavor with the mozzarella. It came in eight square slices evenly cut with the edges slightly browned for a good crispy texture. Although the menu is sports bar fare related, there are a lot of interesting choices on the menu worth checking out. Some of those include the Roasted Yukon Gold Potato Pizza (bacon, sour cream, tomatoes, pepperoni, garlic, green onions, and parsley), The Mick-Nickel (two patties with American cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions, and nickel sauce on a three-tiered bun...it sounds familiar but I'm sure it's far superior than the other place...), and the Fiddler's Plunger (two beef patties, provolone, mozzarella, white cheddar, and Swiss cheese topped with chicken tenders, buffalo wing sauce, jalapenos, and blue cheese...I think I'll try this one next time...). The prices are a little higher than I like but this is a decent option if you happen to be in Girdwood. read more

We came here on a Friday for lunch. It looked like they had 3 servers for the whole restaurant. We waited about 15 minutes to order. I was about to leave when the server came to take our order. Our server was very nice and I do not think it is their fault they are the only server for a large area of the restaurant. I ordered the shrimp tacos & my friend ordered the chicken sandwich. The best part of our meal was the fries that came with the chicken sandwich. My shrimp tacos were $20 for store bought tortillas, 2 barely peppered shrimp, loosely chopped cabbage, & 2 pickled jalapeños. I tried to eat one but it was so inedible that I just ate the shrimp out of them. My friends chicken sandwich was not seasoned and dry. We were hungry on our way back from Portage and cell service was very limited and most of the places we wanted to go were closed. I regret not taking more time to find a better restaurant.
