The place is really dim and they play a lot of heavy metal music. Staff are friendly. Buddy and I had the Slaughter house platter which serves 2 people. Ribs, slices of brisket, pulled pork, and some salt & pepper wings. Comes with carrots and onions and turnip(?) and potato wedges. Decent amount of food. Definitely left satisfied. Closet metalhead that dragged his family across town to this spot. Left feeling a little underwhelmed. Despite being on DDD, my food expectations were fairly low. Overall, the food ended up being above average (roast beef and a burger). The atmosphere was predictably dark. Less metal than I anticipated if I'm being honest. The music was on pretty low, but it was probably for the best as it was 80's NWOBHM (I think) but I could have been wrong. It was hard to hear. Wait staff was super nice. We looked like outsiders but they never treated us as such. Like I always say, metalheads are the best. Beer choices were fine but mine was fairly warm (similar to what you find in England) and kinda flat like it was the last pint or two from the keg. Overall, cool spot and I'm glad I tried it. An extreme metal bar, with craft beers, burgers, nachos and other junk food with plenty of vegan options. Yeah, works for me. They were blaring death metal the whole time, which is definitely up my alley. The beer list is just average, but I could enjoy a glass or two here. Food-wise, I got a veggie burger (a proper homemade bean-based patty, not a fake meat one), with a side caesar salad (~$20 + surcharges for vegan cheese). The burger was massive; I liked the patty, but it was otherwise a fairly low-effort, low-quality burger -- iceberg lettuce, lifeless white bun, etc. -- and quite pricey. After tax/tip, that was a ~$28 meal. Yikes. They also are able to do vegan nachos, but I'm not huge into junk food. Maybe I'll try them another time if I'm here with other vegans. My friend said "hey, wanna listen to some heavy music while having a good meal?" I wasn't sure of the music but I would never say no to good food. Last night my 3 friends and I visited this awesomely eclectic, dimmed lighted little dive on East Hastings Street. If you don't like heavy metal music then still run to this awesome little place to enjoy delicious homemade food. Service was prompt and friendly. Truly enjoyed looking at their decor of vintage animals and rock/heavy music. We had: Jackalopes Lager, Strathcona Pilsner and Pickle Back (Canadian Club Rye with a shot of pickle juice). My friend said the pickle juice made the Pickle Back surprisingly refreshing. The Rib Splitter: The blackberry bbq sauce ribs are insanely good. The meat just falls off the bone. The vegetables were seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. Loved the hot skillet that kept the mashed potatoes temperature hot/warm. Hands down, the best ribs in town. Bake-up the Dead: breaded chicken breast served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The chicken was seasoned well and juicy. The house made gravy added another dimension and depth to the already perfectly cooked chicken. Veggie Burger: my friend said it was an excellent veggie burger in that the homemade patty was moist and very filling. Wouldn't miss beef eating this veggie burger. Bead pudding: 2oz of bourbon solidified this light and sweet dessert. My friends liked the bread pudding but I didn't as I usually don't like sweet bread. Hoping For another option on my next visit. There are vegan options so filling a range of eaters. Will be back to try the nachos and another supper meal. Tips: The tables in the back are not as loud with music compared to the front. Checked this place out and it is really awesome. It's not actually a dive bar but the theming, decorations, vibe and music is on point. My Heavy Metal loving friends were so happy with this place. They have a decent collection of beers on tap and the food was surprisingly delicious! The BBQ was done really well and the nachos had a decent cheese to chip ratio evenly distributed. Restaurant staff checked in with us frequently for more drinks, food and even thanked us for coming by at the end. I'd definitely swing by again for a future visit! read more

There's a hell of a lot going on with Jackalope's that totally steals my punk heart. Is it the metal music? The kitschy animal decor? The gregarious service? This place is the atmosphere that the reviews say. A very loud hard rock bar. So let me say I am not at all a hard rock fan. It is music I dislike alott. So I went here just for the food. It is a small place but we were seated right away. Service was friendly and to the point. We did maybe fell a bit out of place because we are in our late 50's and the average age was about 20 and 30. And we both do not have a tattoo and maybe the minimum tattoo was like 5 or so on everyone. So are you getting a visual haha. We both got some skillet meal. How does a dark, hole-in-the-wall, heavy metal bar have a 4.5 star rating on Yelp you ask!?!? Easy, delicious food, friendly folks, great beer, and (shh) they don't only play metal... I swear I heard Kraftwerk blaring from the sound system recently! Jackalope does a sous vide brisket that is to die for. From their Monday burger and a beer which rotates a different burger every week, to their BBQ and root veggies, Jackalope just does fantastic food. They even have vegan options! The taps are a selection of local craft brews and they have a full bar of mixed drinks, I highly recommend a Caesar for Sunday Brunch! Everything is reasonably priced and ranged from $10-15ish. Got a group of friends? Get the nachos, you won't regret it. Service is friendly at this small local pub/dive bar. Thankfully, the servers are awesome because I think the cleaning crew has forgotten about this place. The decor is an Applebee's gone wrong with an eclectic grouping of wall hangings and pictures which would qualify as the world's worst garage sale finds. The beer is cold, which is always good. The nachos were fabulous- I mean really good and tasty. We had the vegetarian and the roasted yam, black beans and corn were so good as toppings. This is a place with character and lots of it! Stopped by on Sunday... like finally. Been having this place bookmarked before I even yelped. To my disappointment, as I stepped in I felt so out of place. By the service and by the diners. Literally everyone there had tattoos, multiple piercings and aren't Asian. Took quite a while before we were acknowledged and given a seat at the bar table facing outside. With our backs towards them I doubt we'd get any service if any at all. Waited for a bit longer and we flagged someone down for the menu. Waited again for our orders to be taken (during the duration of time we even requested to be seated at a table that got freed). The servers seemed more content AFTER we ordered some drinks. We initially wanted to order chicken and waffles but they were out. Instead we got the meat & eggs and Skillet Hash with pulled pork. I was not asked whether I wanted poached or scrambled eggs nor was I asked if I wanted cornbread or rye bread. Luckily what they gave me was what I would have chosen (poached and cornbread). The food came after 45 minutes which we started to grow impatient. The food was good, no doubt about that. But dining out is based on the overall experience so good food can't compensate for the long wait and somewhat unwelcoming service. read more

The perfect place to meet your fiends and sip some good beer. I went here for the first time today to grab dinner. I was very pleased. My wife and I had the portabello sandwich and I had the C.A.T. sandwich which came with a nice salad and some potatoes. My two year old ate the cornbread with pimento cheese and picked off of our plates. All of it was very fairly priced which is nice. The staff was super friendly and had all the things that make it easy to take a kid out for dinner. High chair, plastic kids cup plastic kids plate. Thankfully they have some great beers on tap. This place was a total surprise to me! We originally came to this area to check out a tattoo shop and they just happened to be next door. We came in for lunch and it was quite busy but we managed to get a table faster than we expected. The place was small and clean. I loved the artistic-rock vibe and the atmosphere. I ordered for their beef brisket. It came with eggs, biscuit and side veggies. It was very flavourful and just delicious! I wish the serving was a bit bigger though. I also had a bite of their smoky, fall off the bone goodness ribs and it was as yummy! I can't wait to come back and try other meals! Service was fast and all the staff were nice and friendly. Brunch here is awesome! The locations is great, in the heart of Hastings! The place is small and cozy! Sunday double Caesars for $6.00!! And it was loaded and spicy! I got the plain skillet (corn, kale, mushrooms on a bed of root veg with cheese and poached eggs and a bit of hollandaise sauce) and it was epic! Perfect meal for a hungover brunch! Friend and I found out our regular haunt for steak wasnt open from the Christmas holidays we decided to give Jackalope's a try again after having not been there in over a year. The food was good but the music was so loud I couldnt hear what my friends were saying. This time around the food was consistently as good! Im a huge fan of the ribs, house salad and corn bread. I was able to "tolerate" the music due to having had a few Tipsy Palmers this time around. Stopped in at the jackalope and it was full already at 7:15! They make a great mojito and my date had the strathcona pils. They also have the sour and a fat tug ipa on tap. Decor is wacky with artwork featuring weird half-this-half-that animals and skulls lining the walls. We ordered the Jackalope's nachos--you can get it with dairya and has black beans, corn and yam. Mother of three from Coquitlam here - I decided to come to this restaurant because I am trying to connect more with my eldest son. Alex is a great kid, but he is really into the metal. I read online that this establishment was a "dive" but in a good way? While the concept is foreign to me, I thought it would be great to step out of my comfort zone (hehe). Anyway...from the moment we were seated at our table the service was very, very bad. The waitress seemed to think that we were a burden and not paying customers! The music was also very loud and quite distracting (very un-Christian, as well). The waitress seemed as if she was really busy as she frantically ran about the empty restaurant all the while ignoring me. When she brought me a re-fill of my soda, she all but threw it at the table. I would never be treated this way at Earls! On top of it all, the food was not very good at all. The quality of chicken was poor, and the flavour was minimal. MOREOVER, when my son was eating his salad (The Big Princess Salad) he noticed a small worm crawling in the leafy greens. I urged him to stop, but he insisted that eating the insect was "metal" and continued on. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

Jackalope's has really quickly turned into my favourite neighbourhood hangout. I swear, I'm there at least once a week. I used to sit at the Bruce Springsteen table every time it was available until some jerk stole his photo! My favourite things are the cheapo house wine and tipsy palmers (seriously get this drink.), the nachos (I would go as far as saying I like them as much as the ones at the Foundation. For real.), the beet salad is fantastic, and so is the portobello sandwich. I've also tried the mac n cheese skillet, the vegan breakfast skillet, seared grits n gravy, and the cornbread. Those are all great too. The decor is awesome too. Nice and dark with taxidermy, bones, metal gig posters, a giant kitten rug on the back wall, and some local artists have their stuff up on the walls too. read more

(In case you're wondering what a jackalope is, it's a mythical cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope, or a bunny with antlers. There, I saved you a Google.) Now, everybody and her dog serves pulled pork sammiches/sliders, but Jackalope's are something special. Pro tip: if your date gets the beef brisket dip, let your slider take a dip too.
