So, I had high hopes after the last time I was here and they were once again dashed this past Friday night. The server was rude, the burger undercooked, and it looked sloppy. We asked for salads to go along with the burger and fries, and when they arrived they were doused in ranch dressing--there had to have been at least a 1/2 cup of dressing and I prefer less than that. Needing to grab a quick dinner with our family and not wanting to do fast food, we chose Jack's as it seemed to be the only other option in the small down of LeRoy. We were happy we did-- the place was very clean, well put together, with a staff that certainly cared about the customers and were proud of their establishment. We had to wait quite a bit when we arrived, but it was Saturday night and we did need a table for 6. Once we were seated several different waiters/owners checked on us and our food came quickly, made correctly, and hot. They checked back often when they could tell we needed something, but were never obtrusive. I loved that they served breakfast all day. For being a new dining place in Leroy I was not really impressed. We had breakfast there on a Saturday morning and the food was below average.It looked like they were lacking servers this early in the morning as well. I also felt uncomfortable with all the security cameras that were place throughout the dining room. I understand having them at the register & outside the business but I don't think that's really needed while you eat. read more

Stopped @ Jack's Cafe, based on YELP reviews. We were happy with our decision. You would have to drive a considerable distance to find a better roadside cafe. Food was great, service was quick and friendly, decor was inviting. Prices are extremely reasonable, and I recommend saving room for dessert. read more

In a town with few options for food, Jack's is a nice surprise. Great diner-style food (including breakfast all day -- our favorite!), but a nice, warm atmosphere. Everything I've had here is excellent, and we eat here a lot. My favorite is the sausage and cheese omelet, which comes with hash browns and toast... mmmm. In addition to the great food and friendly service, Jack's has really nice woodwork, a fireplace, and just overall a nicer interior that you would expect. It's right off I-74, so a great place to stop for a meal if you're traveling in between Bloomington and Champaign. read more

Moving the family across country from Washington state to Georgia, we were spending the night in LeRoy. The clerk at the hotel recommended Jack's for dinner. I had cheese sticks for appetizers, the farmer's omellette, and chocolate cake for dessert. The food was average, but the service was outstanding, the best I've experienced in this cross country trip. Joanne was our server, was very knowledgeable and attentive, and there is a team effort mentality that showed when several other servers came over to help her out. read more

I have ate here a handful of times, ordering something different each time and have never had a bad experience. The service is relatively fast and the food is always hot/cold and fresh! Lots of locals frequent Jack's so don't feel bad if they don't know your name. Make sure to try some of their wonderful pies. If your looking for a recommendation the Jack's salad is great. I would give this more than 5 stars if i could. My mom and i were driving around Dawson Lake around supper time and decided to find a place in LeRoy to eat. My mom had heard good things about this place so we pulled in the parking lot and its always a good sign when there are many cars in the lot at a late hour. I love liver and onions so i ordered it with bacon added. The waiter said it was a popular dish. The meals come with a basket of fresh bread which adds a lot to a meal for little cost to the restaurant. The salad was large and crisp with fresh greens and veggies and my american fries and green beans were delicious. This is the way chefs should season the green beans. Eventhough canned they didnt taste it. My mom got a huge dish of chicken stir fry. We couldnt believe all the food. She said it was the best stir fry she had ever gotten at a restaurant. There was a very slight sweet sauce mixed in the dish with plenty of vegetables and an abundance of chicken. My liver was also the best ever eaten, tender and flavorfull. I will be back many times in the future!!! Great service and atmosphere and food.....what else can you ask for! read more

They owned the Village Garden in Fisher and when they moved they took with them a "family" owned "family" run restraunt. Being on the road, you can never tell what exactly you are getting into when you eat somewhere you've never been. A fellow driver suggested here and we were pleasantly surprised.. The place is very clean, the service was great and the food was good with extremely satisfying portions. I ordered the grilled chicken breast really expecting a small shriveled breast like you would get in most roadside cafes and it was far from it. Juicy, large and very flavorful. The veggies were fresh everything was hot.. The chicken noodle soup seemed homemade and was done very well.. The prices were fair, I thought, until I got my food then I realized it was well worth it. WORST food, service and prices! My family of 6 left with 5 of the six meals! We did not get our soups or salads, the chicken strips and fries were VERY cold, and no one would eat the pancakes. I'm not sure where these folks giving 5 stars actually ate but it was not at the Jack's Cafe in LeRoy that we ate at! We've "dined" there on 4 separate occasions so it's not like we haven't given this establishment MORE than ample opportunity to prove themselves but the lack of personality by the waitresses and the crap they pass off as food has been totally and completely consistent.....bad each and every time. Next time we pass through, we are going to the IGA and just get a package of meat and a loaf of bread and eat in the car.....it will be cheaper and better tasting I'm sure. The food was tasteless and the green beans that someone was raving about were frozen but they were boiled to a mush consistency. I ordered scrambled eggs which I thought would be hard to mess up but they too were tasteless.....like they were egg beaters or something of that ilk. On two occasions I've ordered the mushroom Swiss burger which is a normal thing I order at "chain" restaurants but both times they too were tasteless and dry and even the mushrooms and cheese tasted like nothing! I'm not sure how this is possible but it's been accomplished by Jacks more than once. If you want my opinion....just stay on the Interstate and keep driving to Bloomington or Champaign and take your chances there. read more

Jack's is one of my favorite breakfast places. The restaurant is always clean the service is prompt and friendly. Your beverage will never end up empty. They offer the typical breakfast menu. We were in the Le Roy area and thought we'd try lunch here. We ordered the special of the day, the walleye dinner. Our server, who was very attentive, seemed unsure of what the food was like, but was willing to go find out. Turns out the fish was deep fried/beer batter. The dinner came with a choice of potatoes...fries, baked or mashed, and soup or salad. On being told the salad was made w/iceberg lettuce we chose the chicken noodle soup. We were served what appeared to be (and tasted like) the next step up from Campbell's basic Chicken Noodle soup...canned salty water w/a few more noodles and hints of vegetables in it, but certainly NOT homemade soup. We chose mashed potatoes after being told they were made from real potatoes. Our server brought out our plates of fried walleye which was actually quite tasty (along w/a tiny to go container of standard tartar sauce) , an ice cream scoop sized serving of mashed potatoes with a brown gravylike substance covering it, and a huge serving of neon yellow 'macaroni and cheese'. The 'gravy' was of indeterminate flavor unless 'medium brown' is a flavor...so off putting that it was difficult to even taste the potatoes. After scraping away the brown substance I did indeed find real mashed potatoes (I could tell they were real because they had a few lumps...not a bad thing) but they tasted like they had been mashed with nothing but the water they'd been cooked in...a real disappointment. And the neon yellow substance. YIKES! Admittedly it was a bonus item on the plate, but sadly it amounted to severely overcooked macaroni with that extreme colored sauce that had a faint fake cheese flavor...oh and a slight sprinkling of some finely minced green substance that added no flavor. We tried to eat both the potatoes and macaroni and cheese but decided not to ingest needless calories that would have tasted terrible if they'd tasted of anything recognizable at all.. My dining companion, when asked how 'everything is' asked the waiter if he could exchange his mashed potatoes for fries. The waiter said he'd have to go ask. (really? poor guy). He eventually returned with a small plate of piping hot french fries. Sadly they were frozen fries doused in some kind of artificial flavored coating before being fried...also just barely edible. Hate to say it, but we probably won't be giving Jack's a second try. I had high hopes that a non-chain restaurant in a small IL town, right off the interstate would have real, fresh cooked, basic food. The closest to that was the walleye. The lack of any vegetables beyond what might have accompanied the iceberg lettuce was very disappointing, as was the incredibly bland mashed potatoes (oops...guess potatoes are considered a vegetable?) We discussed them with the person who took our money at the check out...appeared to be someone important, who asked us 'how was everything'...and he told us they mash their potatoes with milk and a little butter. We suggested using real cream and more butter. We also told the waiter that the macaroni and cheese was extremely overcooked...didn't bother telling him how dreadful the 'cheese' part was. I wonder if the people who own this place eat their own food, ever? Also wonder if they ever watch Food Network TV? If they did, they might get a few helpful hints from "Restaurant Impossible". All the while we were eating I was envisioning Robert Irvine's reaction to every single food item. Not a pleasant visual. It seems it really shouldn't be that difficult or expensive to serve wholesome, fresh cooked basic dishes at a restaurant like this. But I guess as long as enough people keep pulling in off the interstate, having a meal on their way to somewhere else, never to return, they'll have no need to change? I suspect this place could do better (I spotted some incredibly beautiful lemon meringue pie in their dessert case) if they knew the truth about how sad their 'not made from fresh' food is. I also think they could become a place people would make a point to stop at if they made some serious changes. And if they did, they'd be a good representation of what the 'heartland' of Illinois is all about, what it is really capable of. Oh, our bill was $24 for food we could only eat about a 3rd of (including actually good plain iced tea). We could have gone across the road and had relatively healthy and tasty food at McDonald's for much less. read more
