I worked in South Philly for a while and quickly discovered roast pork sandwiches were a really big deal. Now I work in the North East and folks in this part of town really love a chicken cutlet and a seeded roll. I am not a fan of roast pork sandwiches, chicken cutlets or seeded rolls so when my company does a food order I usually stick to pizza or a turkey hoagie (although the Fuzzy Cutlet at Chubby's is interesting and deserves a nod). Today's order was coming from Jack's Place and I was told I could not go wrong with anything that I ordered from here. Still I went with the turkey hoagie and I actually enjoyed it seeded roll and all. The turkey was very fresh, oven roasted and thinly sliced. The lettuce and tomato was also fresh. I asked for hot peppers and thought I might get banana peppers or cherry peppers but they gave me long hots and boy did that pack a punch. I also liked the fact that the sandwich was flat. One of my co-workers ordered an Italian and he was not expecting the olive spread on the bread. He tried scraping it off the roll but said it still made the sandwich taste too olive-y and that no where on the menu does it say there will be an olive spread. It doesn't and it really should and for that and the fact that I could not specify a non seeded roll I lowered my rating. But I would definitely seek out this sandwich again. On the way home from the shore with my mother, we passed Hegerman and I was like hey remember that hoagie spot we used to get amazing sandwiches , thinking they weren't in business anymore because we haven't been down that way in awhile.. sure enough and luckily they were still there! I went in and placed an order for 3 hoagies and the ladies were so nice and quick with them!! I got the original Italian (only thing I forgot is they put a green olive spread on it .. and not the biggest fan of olives on my sandwiches) but it was still sooooo good!!! I honestly think Jack's may be one of the best kept secrets in northeast Philly. I'm still surprised it's taken me so long to find and try this place. If you're looking for a great sandwich with quality ingredients, Jack's is your spot for sure. I ordered the Chicken Parm sandwich and really really enjoyed it (Not my best work in terms of the photo lol - trust me though, the sandwich was amazing). I love a good seeded roll and this one was absolutely delicious - there's nothing like a quality roll. This was a solid local spot with both hot and cold subs. I really enjoyed the eggplant parmigiana hot sub. The eggplant was thin but had a nice crunchy breading. I was so excited to order the Italian - it's my go to cold sub wherever I go. I was disappointed to find the original Italian had an olive with feta cheese tapenade spread which I was pretty upset to find since I hate olives. It is the one food I cannot stomach. I really wanted to love it!! The sesame bread was so good and I wanted to enjoy the sandwich. I would go back and ask for the Italian without the olive spread. They had some little containers with samples of the apple crumble cake and I was blown away by it. The cake definitely tasted fresh and recently baked since the bread was very fluffy. Jack's Place is a staple in Tacony. People come from all over the city, even South Philly to grab a Jack's hoagie. Their hoagies are loaded with the finest cuts of meat and very fresh produce. The roll they come on is the real deal. My favorite of course is the Supreme Italian which comes with Soppressata, Dry curedCapi, Prosciutto and Sharp Provolone. They also have three other variations of the Italian but this is my favorite. There is always ample street parking. The shop is immaculately kept and the staff is very professional and courteous. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of sandwiches you receive. They also have cheesesteaks, cutlet sandwiches and salads and seafood platters. I have been coming to Jack's for years and I am sure I will be a customer as long as they are open or I am on this Earth. ***********HOAGIE COMA*********** It was finally here.... I was going to get my wish. My nephew agreed to travel across town to Jack's Place and pick up some hoagies for the weekend. I live across town from Jack's and with the snow, freezing weather and distance it wasn't easy to get a fix. But I bought him a sandwich from Jack's for the Superbowl game and he was hooked. So he agreed to make the journey Friday. I had it planned out in my mind how I was going to make the best of this event. You see, I've been getting hoagies from Jack's Place for years and they make the best hoagies I ever ate hands down. They use the freshest and the most authentic ingredients around and they know how to build a hoagie to obtain a perfect flavor profile. That's all I can say, you need to try them for yourself. 10am. I'm waiting for my nephew to get ready because Jack's opens at 11am, but not a creature was stirring. 11am. I'm eager to call in my order but still, no movement. 12 noon, high noon in my mind and I nervously called him and reminded him that Jack's closes at 4pm. He said I'm on my way to pick up the sandwiches, order me a chicken cutlet with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone cheese, mayo and long hots. This place is as "local neighborhood sandwich spot" as it gets. Upon walking in, there were two adorable older ladies that started chatting us up like we were family that had come to visit Mom-Mom, and they were wondering "jeat?" (That's "did you eat," for the uninitiated.) It was funny, they actually treated us like we were Senators or something, as we were dressed in business casual, and they thought we were "someone important or what?" lol I guess we skewed a little different from the normal Tacony clientele. *shoulder shrug emoji* None of that mattered though, as the ladies couldn't have been nicer, and they also make a hell of a cheesesteak. A good friend had always visited Jack's for hoagies, until he saw them hand cutting a large eye roast for steak sandwiches, so he had to try. Then he took me there yesterday, and it was clearly at the top of the list! The bread from Perry's bakery was light & airy inside, with a nice crust outside & the meat was some of the best I've ever had. So tender & juicy, the sandwich was like air going down, and I could've easily eaten another. I always get my cheesesteaks with provolone cheese, not really a Cheese-Wiz guy, and a little mayo. That's how I always try my steak sandwich, and like I said, it was fantastic! The place is a deli, no seating, with very pleasant ladies working there & making all the products. Ok so let me start this noting I've been trying italians in this area since I moved here in august and have learned that one, I am picky and two, I don't dig the seeded roll. The seeded roll at jack's was the exception, bread 10/10. I ordered a supreme with regular provolone and long hots but I'm not sure what i actually got. Something on the sandwich reminded me of (and smelled like) olives and not long hots? Really have no idea what was on my sandwich but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read through other reviews and now see an olive spread is standard on the Italians which is so weird and also not mentioned in the description. Can't wait to try again though, with the actual long hots I ordered. Also, the crab nuggets were an unexpected delicious addition. read more

There was a green bug in the sandwich, probably from the lettuce. That means the lettuce wasn't properly washed. Also ordered wings and the wings had a seasoning on them that made then very salty. The buffalo sauce was on the side. When you order wings they usually come covered in the sauce. read more

For the life of me I have passed this place and never thought much about it. Just a few weeks ago I for some reason decided to give it a go and fuck me I am a shit knocker. WHY did I not try this years ago. Everything we had so far was amazing. I should punch myself in the dick for depriving me of Jack's. My stand out is the chicken cutlet with spinach & cheese with the spectacular red sauce on the side. The rolls are always soft but hold up. The chicken smashes any other cutlet I've had before. Ingredients are top notch. The cheese steak was perfect. Roast beef was tender and juicy. Loved the chicken fingers & fries. Italian hoagie was brilliant. Meats are quality and the staff super nice. With all the great reviews on Jacks I had high hopes. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I arrived early Tuesday and ordered the original Italian and a small order of fries. I'm a sucker for steak fries! The place is clean and small. Very limited seating, take out only and cash only. The fries were bad! They were overly seasoned and tasted like they were sitting around for a while. They were very dry. Now for the Hoagie... it was just ok. First there were diced olives on it, I hate olives!! I scrapped them off so I could at least eat the sandwich. The meat was fresh as were the tomatoes. The roll, not a fan. It was a bit too tough for my liking, very similar to a French bread. Best Italian Hoagie in Philly. The original Italian. They don't stuff it with ridiculous amounts of meat like primos. Their seeded bread is crusty on the outside and soft/ chewy on the inside. Perfect ratio of meat/bread. They don't use iceberg lettuce that is half white half green, they use green leafy lettuce. Italian Tuna Hoagie- just olive oil tuna, sharp prov & red roasted peppers; that's all it needed to be delicious. Great hoagies. Not a huge fan of the olive spread on the Italian hoagie, but that's really just a matter of personal preference and nothing to fault them for. The rest of the hoagie more than makes up for it. Good meat-to-condiment ratio. Places either pack your hoagie with ungodly amounts of meat that would make Ron Jeremy turn green with envy, or they cram so much lettuce into the thing that you start to think you've been tricked into eating a salad. Not Jack's, they seem to have this hoagie thing figured out. One of the other reviews already said this, but I feel the need to reiterate. The rolls have a crunch on the outside, but are still soft and delectable on the inside. This is PERFECT for a hoagie! Oh, and GET THERE EARLY!
