My go to coffee spot in Greenwich Village. When I lived in NYC from 2010-2015 I was here practically every summer weekend getting an iced coffee, cookie or one of their vegan pastries. Too expensive to be getting such poor customer service who barely wants to lift a finger which is a pattern of their staff. I was in the Village for work (buying the works of Kafka and Kerouac; great writers must also be great readers) when the impulse struck me: I needed a mocha. My friends who know me dearly know one truth about my nature: a hot mocha will either solve my problems or ruin my day. I have come to accept my soul's volatile unrest (read: my mocha dependence) as innate and impossible to rectify. Any attempts at salvation--Rettung, for my German readers--would be to no avail. Three tables fill the space, and one barista stood behind the counter. All shots are pulled "ristretto" to ensure smoothness and mitigate any of the beans' bitter notes. A former barista myself, I sometimes fear that "ristretto" is more myth than mortal, but I must be discerning with what I let occupy the lines of my writing and the synapses of my mind. My favorite coffee and I DoorDash this all the time, but today I went in the store and the man taking my order was SO RUDE On DoorDash it says the Dirty Harry is a vanilla soy latte rather than vanilla almond latte and asked him if it's a different one than they have on the menu and he they have no soy milk here. I was like oh that's weird because the menu on DoorDash always calls this a soy latte, so the menu's wrong. I missed the Yelp check-in offer. Great location with patio seating too. I would have bought beans had I not already picked up around the corner. Love their pastry selection which was pretty much all gluten free and/or vegan. I had the chocolate cream filled cake thingy that mimicked the Hostess thing. I kept asking, "Are you SURE this is vegan?". Seems too good to be true. However, all their bakery items are vegan! I was skeptical of the coffee. The stir brew method is patented, and I thought maybe it was a gimmick. However, it's a really great cup! I have tried it black and have had it with almond milk added (brought from home... I work for an almond milk company... but they do have non-dairy milks there). The coffee is organic and fair trade coffee. The only part that annoys me is the self-serve sugar area. There's nowhere to put your coffee while opening sugar so basically you have to hope for the best that your coffee doesn't fall on the floor. Lovely staff, terrible coffee. The coffee and espresso itself - I've had a coffee with milk, and a dry double cappuccino - is dreadful, probably 2-star. I admire that Jack's is doing the organic, fair-trade thing - but much like how organic wine used to be awful, they seemed to be focusing too much on ethics and not enough on flavour. It's a small little place, but cozy, and they close relatively early (7ish?) which I find a bit inconceivable. The first time I ventured here, it was 30 minutes past closing, and I had walked all the way over in the cold simply to try their coffee. I pleaded my case with them and they consented to give me a large coffee - for free since they'd closed the register - so I tipped them heartily. The coffee, with milk, was drinkable but overbrewed and acidic, and not quite as crack-addled as I generally like my coffee drinks. Today I had a small cappuccino, with an extra shot, which I asked for dry - this came to a whopping $4.25, btw - and was very disappointed. I usually drink my cappuccinos without sweetener, but the espresso in this was so acrid (overbrewed, bitter, overroasted - blech) I had to add a little raw sugar to make it palatable. And, despite it being a DRY capp, the foam was not particularly plentiful, and while I've had worse, it was a bit on the loose side. As before, the staff were lovely. They had a decent little tasty-looking pastry assortment, as well as local apples, for sale - I particularly liked the looks of their 'Rosie's chocolate chip cookies', which looked moist, chewy, and fresh. In addition to coffee and espresso drinks (including an intriguing 'honey macchiato') they serve a respectable array of teas, hard cider, and beers. Overpriced, bad coffee. Alas. Seeing as it's primarily a coffee shop, this an unforgivable flaw; I will not return. read more

I asked the barista if they had any flavor lattes she said she couldn't hear me so I asked again to which she said no we don't have that. On the freezing Tuesday after the new years, I had 1+ hour to kill before meeting up with friends so I decided to visit Jack's for a cup of the yummy Apple Jack that I had at their South St Seaport location (Apple Jack: apple cider infused with chai tea). The West Village location is smaller, but had the same menu and decor feel as that of South Street Seaport's. I thought I ordered the Apple Jack but it turned out I ordered a Happy Jack. They do sound awfully similar, and it was an understandable mistake since Apple Jack is a seasonal offering (and I may or may not have been speaking through my scarf). Anyways, all good, Happy Jack consists of espresso, steamed milk, honey and cinnamon. I sat at one of the four small tables. The small space and lack of wind breaker meant a chill every time customers entered the cafe, and there were a lot of customers coming and going. This is my favorite coffee place. Come to it every time I am downtown or near a Jack's. Their decaf (although no one who loves coffee goes for decaf) cold brew is amazing. I always have to ask or think is it really decaf. It's amazing!! And their regular cold brew is quite tasty too. The environment is quaint and nice too. The staff is friendly. One comment that would improve my experience is a rewards program that doesn't require a paper card. They had used phone numbers in past. Phone number or scannable paperless process as well. Anything to not be forced into having to carry another card and have a George castanza like wallet. Updating my review as I now go for the oat milk latte! This is my current favorite cold brew in the city. Rich, deep cocoa undertones. So smooth. I am cursing the fact that JSB doesn't exist north of 14th street or in Brooklyn (yet). I came here because I saw that they have a fair amount of vegan options, and although I'm not vegan I try to support places that offer more plant based items. I got an iced honey jack latte and it was really delicious. My boyfriend got black coffee, and my sister got what seemed like an ice hot chocolate (if that makes sense), and they both liked them. We also shared an apple turnover, and a piece of plum almond bread. The food was okay, but nothing amazing. Overall, it was definitely a little pricier than most coffee shops in Manhattan, but I used the 10% off when you check in on yelp so that evened it out a little. There's nothing especially amazing about this place that is drawing me back, but the employees were very nice and friendly.
