Excellent service! My heating/air stopped, and at first I called a firm associated with Home Depot. They diagnosed the problem as a bad blower motor, but explained that the motor itself could not be replaced as it was an older model, and that California regulations required that I buy an entirely new HVAC system for $16K. I then called Jackson & Foster, and their man diagnosed the problem in a few minutes to be a bad fuse in the heating unit. This was replaced, and everything now works fine! read more

Jackson and Foster did some heat pump work for me. This required four appointments and three visits to the house. The first visit provided a technician that was totally unfamiliar with my Bosch equipment, despite my having provided model number and other details about my heat pump in advance. He never even powered up the unit. The second visit was with techs that could do a proper evaluation and the third and final visit provided the actual fix after J&F had sourced the repair parts. Between the first and second visits I was told that they did not service my type of heat pump and I had to point out that they were specifically listed on the manufacturer's list of qualified install / repair companies for these models. When that pointed out they had some sort of aha moment and got the right techs assigned. After this, the, repairs went smoothly except for a longish wait for a TX valve. I am happy with the work performed but not so much with communication and billing. My first appointment was cancelled after the fact, the second appointment and first visit failure could have been entirely avoided if they had taken better note of my type of equipment, and they could have been much more communicative about expected delivery of the repair part. For the kicker, J&F insisted on running a credit card for billing through their own hand-held terminal, which didn't work well in my house, and it ended up billing my card twice. They have been entirely non-responsive to multiple requests to cancel the duplicate charge and I've had to resolve this entirely through the credit card company. So in short - I am happy with their better technicians, but unhappy about inattention to details regarding scheduling and billing. I will probably use them again, but will be paying very close attention to technician assignments and billing. read more

I have had maybe five interactions in the last 3 years, including diagnosing and replacing a heat pump of a very unusual kind in a condo, a new attic fan and ducting in a house, repair of an A/C unit, and installation of a Nest thermostat for that heat pump, which Nest itself could not figure out how to do. They lie to make more money. My heater wasn't working, so I bought a brand new igniter and brand new pack of two flame sensors. I changed both because those are the most common faults of heating systems. I called this company after both those options didn't fix my heater. They charge $124 just to come out and look, and said it'll go towards whatever work I get done. The guy came out looked it over and found out that it was the pressure switch. But in order for them to make more money, he decided to lie and tell me it was also the flame sensor. While he was checking his truck to see how much it would cost, I got my other sensor that I had just bought, and he told me yes that was it, after I played dumb. He then went and "changed" the sensor and pressure switch. Which btw all these parts I bought pretty cheap. I looked up the pressure switch and i could have got it for $56. So since I already had the flame sensor, these people only charged for pressure switch. They ended up charging me $260. I can only imagine they would have tacked on another $100 if I didn't have my other brand new flame sensor. Which I'm sure he just pocketed because he didn't even leave mr the one he supposedly "changed out". read more

Anthony came to the house and did a 20-point tune-up on our York HVAC system. He was prompt, very friendly, communicative, and a good technician. Also, if you decide to have to have this done, the more expensive and extensive 2-visit "pro" tune-up is a much better deal for $199, rather than the $149 tune-up. My AC unit was not delivering enough airflow to certain rooms so I had them come out to check it out. The technician spent all but a few minutes feeling the air from the vents but did not check the duct at all. They said that they would do a damper adjustment for $700. We consented to the work and the technician returned to closed off a few vents. The "damper adjustment" was done in less than 20 minutes. I do not see why it costs $700 for that work. I ended up climbed up in the attic and discovered a duct that had been disconnected from the vent. That was the actual problem that the technician failed to diagnose... When I called to complain, they suggested a new AC unit... It is quite comical really. I would not use them again. read more

I have used Jackson and Foster since I purchased my condo for annual A/C checks... but with this heat at the beginning of July, my a/c decided to stop working, on a Friday! I called Ryan Foster Saturday afternoon with a mayday call, and he had someone to my house Sunday afternoon. My condo went from 88 degrees inside, to a cool 74 degrees. had this review on hold but with the cold weather, the lovely heater kicked on. So loud that I came to yelp to write a review of Jackson & Foster and found a review I started a few months back. We had our first interaction with Jackson & Foster 4 years ago. Our air handler went out and J&F replaced. We wanted to replace the entire system and convert to gas but the technician said our A/C unit would last for a long time. So, we only replaced the air handler unit. Low and behold, the unit outside stopped working a week later. So we had to spend an extra $1,000 to fix the units independently. 1st f up... With many calls with company management, they gave us $50 dollars off. Wow... we spent over $5,000 and they gave me less than 1% off. Sweet deal. 2nd f up On top of poor recommendation for that situation, the A/C unit outside they sold us is terrible. People cannot sit outside and have a conversation if the A/C or heater is on. We were never presented with an option for other, quieter units. Money was not the problem and would have spent top dollar to optimize our life- be able to sit outside while A/C is on, if the kids were sleeping for example. 3rd f up As it turns out, the air handler was leaking last week. We called Jackson Foster to come and resolve thinking it would be covered under warranty. Guess again- labor coverage is only for one year. We explained our situation to the management and it was like speaking to a wall, regurgitating the same over and over. By no means are we looking to take advantage of a company or get a sweet deal. After a scam experience with another company who would not give me an estimate over the phone but insisted on coming out to give me a free estimate and told me the thermostat I had purchased could not be installed with my furnace, I had SDG&E come out and they told me there was no problem with installing that thermostat. I called Jackson and Foster, I was given and estimate, and I scheduled an appointment. I believe it was Kory who came out. He called before he came, and was here on time. He had to do some extra wiring and checking, but he got the thermostat hooked up, helped me program it, and it has been working perfectly. Back when it was cold n wet right before xmas my furnace stopped blowing hot air and I called Jackson and Foster based on a friend's referral. They were very prompt in taking care of me and had me up and running before he left. I've never had a service/tech person offer to put covers on their shoes to avoid bringing in mud and water into my house but now that I've seen it, I'm gonna expect all repairmen to have the same courtesy. Dan just left our home for the second visit to diagnose an issue with our HVAC system. On the first trip, they overcharged us by more than 100%, service call was $124 and they added a $139 fee which I believe was an arbitrary charge they that technician felt he could get away with, however and when I called to discuss they agreed and backed off. Basically and in effect agreeing to the overcharge. I proceeded then with the second call to have the motor replaced since it seemed they were being reasonable (now I think they just got caught and wanted a second chance to proceed with the same practice). Today (10/15/14), Dan showed and replaced the motor at $365, (interesting they have to order parts that seem like they should have on hand). After performing the replacement motor, Dan said we better have the condenser unit cleaned. I figured he had to take apart the unit for $174 / service charge. Dan had a chemical on his belt which is simply sprayed unit and washed it off with water. In all $663 for a replacement damper motor and shooting a foaming chemical on the condenser. Be forewarned about Jackson and Foster HVAC on University Avenue, a Dan Foster Company. 11/12/2015 As a follow up, I just had another HVAC company come (we have used the appliance much this year), and he fixed a lead wire on the motor Dan replaced and the tech said the connection was so bad to the motor it just came off...i.e. the screw to keep the wire attached to the terminal was tightened. Contacted the company to have my installation redone. Called on a Monday and spoke to a female. She scheduled an estimate for that Wednesday from 9am-12pm. Took down my address, name and phone number and said I would get a call half an hour before the technician would arrive. I spent my Wednesday waiting and no one showed or called. I called around 3pm after coming to the conclusion no one was going to show up. I believe the same female answered, said she didn't have my address or phone number on file therefore no scheduled appointment. Thinking I could have made a mistake, I checked my call log and confirmed the date and time I had called to schedule the appointment. She insisted I had not called and had no scheduled appointment. Went on to tell me they were booked for two weeks. Besides wasting my day waiting for an appointment that never existed, her attitude made the experience go from bad to worse. No apology or attempt to fix it. Just attitude as she was certain I had not made the appointment had no explanation as to why my information was taken down but not added to their appointments. read more

I was one of their first customers after they broke off from the commercial division. The people who installed my unit no longer work for the company. I realize how hard it is to get good employees. Especially when the economy was booming. The fact that he personally called me leads me to the conclusion that they have a lot more attention to details than they had when I had them install my unit. Having problems with the fan, would not ramp up to high speed. They installed the unit ten years ago. The tech came out, charged $124 and didn't fix the problem. Said everything was fine, when it wasn't. When I called to complained, all they wanted to do was sent the tech out again. I kept asking them, do you have a tech that has worked on problems like this before. Wouldn't answer my question. I didn't want to spend another $124 and still have a broken fan. It turned out not only to be a more complicated repair than anticipated requiring two trips to find the part and install it, the weather got hot and despite being incredibly busy he got back and finished the job. My parents were having AC issues and didn't quite no why. Ryan Foster came out to there place and checked out the unit. (I'm guessing he is the Foster of Jackson and Foster.) Turns out nothing was wrong it just needed a little tweaking. Anyway, the problem was fixed right then and there with a minimal charge. He could have totally up sold us and I would have no idea. They also replaced the air filters for free! He said that he had the exact size in his truck and it was not a big deal. Maybe to him, but to me I felt it was a really nice gesture. I called Jackson and Foster based on their proximity to my home. Tech came out, and seemingly knew what he was talking about. So imagine my shock when the "estimate" he planned on giving us the next day, never happened, No phone call either. We kept waiting, and nothing. I called the office today and the receptionist said she would have him call us back and let us know why we hadn't gotten anything. While waiting for the call, I reviewed the other things people had written and someone had an identical experience with the same tech, never bringing back the estimate. I am completely disappointed because we really need a system in our home but I refuse to waste anymore time with a company that doesn't care. ***UPDATE****05/29/14 due to circumstances beyond the techs control he wasn't able to follow through with giving us an estimate when he aid he would. He has returned my call, apologized profusely and provided me with a very reasonable and thorough estimate. How do you spell RIPOFF? I don't understand all of the 'good reviews' about this place after MY experience with them. For an air conditioner repair, what would you think about a charge of $177.00 for a $10.00 capacitor plus $100.00 service charge AND upon looking at the receipt, their technician, who didn't even want to get up on the roof to do the job, didn't charge a sales tax (which is required by California State Law) and had to be *instructed* (by ME) to write the warranty on the work on the receipt and to write the description of the part AND and had to be *instructed* (by ME) to return my defective part to me? Wanna do business with them? Oh, and BTW, I have the receipt with copies with my attorney just so the good folks at Yelp might ever be interested in seeing. Stay far AWAY from "Jackson & Foster Heating and Air Conditioning" ... Just an update here, folks, as I have been away for a while and saw this ripoff's reply now that back; and I'll update with some truthful information and not the garbage they or whoever it was for them posted. Our roof-mounted, more than 10-year-old, heater, ventilation, air conditioning unit (HVAC) suddenly rattled the house and ceased to operate after an alarming screech. The 2012 Greater San Diego Business Association directory listed Jackson & Foster Heating and Air Conditioning, which has a current A+ rating from the San Diego Better Business Bureau. Fred, the HVAC specialist, arrived on time the next morning. The fan motor had burnt out, there was severe corrosion on the chassis compromising its integrity, and 2/3rds of the corroded squirrel cage fan was missing with blade parts lying on the bottom of the chassis. My husband and I decided to replace the entire unit. The job was completed on time, and in the time-frame stated. An owner's manual was provided. Fred instructed us on the operation of the new digital thermostat, and took us on an outside tour around the unit explaining the work done, and maintenance recommendations. We were impressed with Fred's friendly, professional demeanor, and conscientiousness. After a month of using the heating and air conditioning features, we are very happy with the Rheem product and work completed. read more

Outstanding customer service! They really CARE about their customers and do what it takes to be sure they are satisfied. We had a recurring problem which was difficult to diagnose. The technicians came out repeat times and got it fixed. They are always courteous, communicate what they are doing and are here when they say they will be. If Jackson and Foster were as bad as any cable company, then it would be an improvement for them. My appointment window was from 9 am to 11 am. By 11:15 am, neither the service technician nor any representative from the company called to say they would be late. The technician, Dan, left a voice mail at 11:20 am saying that he was running late and was coming from El Cajon. 40 minutes later he left another voice mail to say he was at my house. Perhaps he took surface streets and hit every red light because El Cajon to my house is no more than a 20 minute ride on the 8 freeway. After the second voice mail from Dan, the technician, I called the office to tell them that they had missed my appointment time, and I would not be using their service. The woman who answered the phone agreed that the technician was late and would call him to tell him it was cancelled. Five minutes after calling the Jackson and Foster office, the technician called me a third time. He asked if I had received his first call. I told him that I heard the voice mail but I was in the shower at the time because I have other things to do today. He retorted, "Well I was calling to let you know that I was late but would be on the way." I said that I would have called before 11 am to say that I would be late. I ended the call by telling technician Dan to get a watch. I called into their office a second time to tell them that the appointment was obviously over with as they hadn't arrived within the 2 hour window and to have their technician stop calling me. This company was late and annoying. I got no apology for their tardiness and was not even asked if I wanted to reschedule. I would never recommend this company to anyone. Beware! I actually would give 0 stars if possible. I have been a customer since 1990 when they were known as Jackson and Blanc. 5 years ago, they recommended that our 13 yr old air conditioner units be replaced by 2 new Carrier units. They have not been running well, even though I've had Jackson come out yearly to "supposedly" maintain them. To my horror just found out that they left the 13 year OLD evaporation coils when they put in new unit, which are incompatible, and are now rusted out and leaking. Their dishonesty and misrepresentation is incomprehensible. We trusted them to do the installation and they failed miserably. In addition there technicians are hopelessly unqualified. Not once did they ever inspect the evap coils which is part of a regular maintenance check. They have left us with a huge mess, not to mention a costly expense. read more
