I've heard it said before that if you want home cookin', then eat at home. I normally subscribe to this belief. It's one reason I don't go out for breakfast ~ I can make a pretty good breakfast at home. No use paying someone to do something I can do. So, going into Jackson's restaurant, a mom and pop restaurant specializing in home cooked style food, I had my doubts. Walking up to what resembled a school cafeteria lunch line only furthered my doubts. And, seeing the sheer number of different options sitting out behind the glass window only furthered my suspicions. Look, I was wrong. The food here is really good. The service is super friendly and helpful. I was so overwhelmed by all the choices I just told the lady behind the glass counter to pick me something. She obliged with a kindness that made me think she knew me somehow. She chose the chicken and dumplings, beef stew, apples, and two different types of corn bread. Now, I thought initially, and she even admitted, that the chicken and dumplings/beef stew mix was a little unorthodox, but that they were both so good I had to try them. Both were fantastic. The apples were awesome. I liked both types of corn bread. When I got up to leave, she called me over to the counter and said that since it was my first time there, I'd get a free dessert. You all, I was too full to even try. The food here is both tasty and filling. I was in Richmond for a conference at Eastern Kentucky University. So it was really convenient to stop by. But I'd say that even if you're remotely close, it's worth a visit. Don't, as I did, judge a book by its cover. read more

Sunday morning breakfast options are limited around here and it was nice to be able to have something local instead of Waffle House or another big chain. Friendly service and good food cooked to order. I chose the "Early Birth Breakfast" that was advertised on the napkin holder and it wasn't ten minutes before it arrived. Two eggs, bacon, potatoes and a biscuit with gravy. Nice, solid, stogy food that kept me going for several hours. The restaurant was clean, the service was attentive and the hot bar looked great. We found this place on a yelp search while going to Menards. This place is awesome. You walk in the front door and you can either pick items off the hot and ready bar which they serve you so other people don't have their hands in the food or you go seat yourself and order off of the menu. We chose to sit down and order. We got the philly steak sandwich which was pretty good and the colonel burger which was delicious and tator tots and onion rings which were both cooked perfectly. The burger was juicy and messy which was delicious. We will definitely stop back in when we are back in the area. And as first time visitors we received a free dessert of our choice. We arrived at 10:23 am and did not receive our food u til 11:35. Over an hour for a mediocre flavorless meal. The waitresses are super friendly and do a great job. The food not so great. The omelette had 0 seasoning on it and no cheese. The biscuits were straight out of a bulk box from Sam's Club and not hot. The pancakes have no flavor and served with fake butter. Think twice before dining here. This is my 3rd visit and all of the visits have been very sub par. It will be a long time before I return. read more

Great local place near the college. Random coincidence. Last year I stopped in town for the night and went to this restaurant. This trip I happened to stop in the same city and used Yelp to find a place to eat. Yep. The same one as last year. This restaurant has a menu to order from plus a hot table. At the table they had fried chicken, mustard greens, shredded turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, dressing (which I chose, minus the chicken) and several other dishes I can't remember. Also desserts. The portions were large and the flavors delicious. The staff is friendly and helpful. There are a few parking spots in front plus more in the rear. This is place a try. Went in at 12:45 pm 10-11-25 ordered from the hot bar. Then ordered my wife a chicken Philly and onion rings. It was 12:50 when I ordered ( I'm a time watcher) anyway, after 15 mins with no food ( there were 8 people in the restaurant) they were not busy!! I hear a room full of laughter in the kitchen I mean old home week at Jackson's!! I'm sitting at a table looking at the swinging kitchen doors. You can see me !! Anyway as the party continues, I ask 4 different employees about my sandwich they looked at me and said I guess they have not started it yet. 25 mins in still not started!! Finally after 40 minutes I got it , I inquired why the delay? Mgr said the girl " forgot to turn in the ticket, ppl forget " his words!! Always an excellent meal whether you are ordering from their 'Meat and 3' hot bar which has different offerings each day, or ordering from their menu. Today, i had their Colonel Burger which is a 1/2 pound burger with 2 slices of hickory smoked bacon, homemade beer cheese, Swiss and American cheeses, topped with hand battered onion petals, dressed as you like (I have them run it through the garden) and crispy french fries. We also had their incredible giant Catfish sandwich on a hoagie bun (you can NEVER go wrong with this deliciousness) and seasoned french fries. Also try their home made potato chips! Plenty of dessert options including some of the best fried pies you will ever have. This is a local place where you never have a bad meal. Great breakfasts too! read more

A classic "meat and three" with a buffet line of awesome meat and veggie selections. Even cooler was the fact that when I quizzed the server over which of the two meats I was interested in was better she responded "you can get half and half!" What a unique hospitality! I had half meatloaf, half fried chicken livers (I know half if you will say "gross" but I LOVE them) with mashed potatoes n gravy and pinto beans. All fantastic. My wife had half fried chicken and half fried Cajun catfish. Portions were more than ample and the food was fantastic. The only complaints.....they could not keep up with demand for cornbread so the only option was Sarah Lee rolls straight from the bag. Also it takes about 10 minutes to make homemade tartar sauce but they handed premade commercial packets instead. The apple hand pies were absolutely incredible. All in all a great old time place that serves great food with great attitude. We loved it. If we were locals we would be here on a very regular basis. We are from out of town just here for a college baseball weekend series. read more

Had it not been for this platform, I probably would not have found this place. A definite diamond in the rough! So worth it - very affordable and memorable. Lisa was my server and she is a beast! She ran the entire restaurant by herself, including coordination with the kitchen, seating, and working the cashier station, and did it with a huge smile. In most every town, there is usually a great restaurant where the locals go for the quality of food and service. In Richmond, KY- Jackson's is the place. Literally everything we tried was delicious. This is good comfort food. We tried the Meat and 3 from the Food Bar- meatloaf, real mashed potatoes and gravy, home made Mac and cheese, and some out of this world sweet potatoes. The corn bread was also incredible. In our group we also tried the omelette. Another hit. The service was incredibly friendly and spot on. Prices reasonable. Lots of public parking across the street. Died and went to heaven! The diner is adorable. The staff is actually sweet and kind. We got burgers and a Rueben. The Rueben is the best Reuben I have ever had in my life. We made room for dessert. OMG! Homemade cakes and pies galore. It reminds me of my Pappy who was a blue ribbon baker. I'm glad my girl lives close so she can get some good food and friendly service. Good basic food and the menu changes, good quality and value for the dollar. The restaurant itself is basic and that is part of its charm.

Yelp reviews led us here and it was a good choice. The menus on Yelp are old, and I would have updated them with new photos, and added photos of our food, but I left my phone in the car! After checking current menus, Hubby decided on the Philly cheese steak sandwich and fries. I was hungry after skipping lunch, and went for the hot bar with country style catfish, green beans, broccoli casserole, mac & cheese, and a fried corn cake. Hubby said his food was good, and so was mine. Only downsides were some tough pieces of broccoli in the casserole, and no one offered to refill Hubby's Diet Coke. The portions are generous, and I didn't leave hungry, but had no room for dessert! We will probably stop here again, whenever we get to Richmond at mealtime. read more
