We stopped in Jackson's while we were visiting Richmond. We love seeking out mom and pop places to eat. Jackson's did not disappoint. The food from the buffet was hot, fresh, and delicious. Everyone ate from the buffet except me, I ordered from the menu. The waiter mentioned an order from the menu takes a little longer, which it did, but I still got to enjoy my meal with everyone else. I do wish they had better options for vegetarians, I wasn't really feeling breakfast at lunch hour. Overall, we were satisfied with our dining experience. read more

Came here for breakfast and while it was a 20 minute wait, the food was phenomenal, everything was fresh and warm. If you get a bacon, egg, and cheese, you might want to stick to the toast option as the biscuits are a little too fragile for all that egg. There's a reason this place stays busy! Service really does depend on the day and time you go in, regardless these are really attentive people. A Richmond favorite! You literally can't get a bad thing here. They give you the option to order from the menu or pick from the meat and sides. The meat usually changes everyday and can vary from turkey, meatloaf, fried catfish (my favorite), fried chicken, and chicken fried steak; all of these options are delicious! The side options are normally the same daily and include things like mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, greens, stuffing, etc. You can't go wrong with any of the sides! The only downside is the small amount of seating, especially during COVID. They have many tables marked off so you may not get a seat (specially on saturdays/sundays). Lots of options, decent food. You can lay eyes on the food before choosing what to order. I respect that. The staff are pleasant. They even have a burger challenge for a free t-shirt. Went for breakfast on a Sunday morning around 10 AM. Place was full. When I looked around, everyone was sitting waiting for their food to be delivered. Should've known an issue then. Food was acceptable. However, the kitchen was a disaster. Food for the table, came out at different times with incomplete orders. For example, hashbrowns and biscuits with gravy came out well after the eggs and pancakes, approximately 15 minutes. Appears the kitchen was overwhelmed, and no one coordinating orders at the pass. Server was excellent and trying to help but not her fault. Ordered a western omelet which was sent to wrong table. While everyone else was eating their partial meals, this person had to wait for their order to be re-cooked, once received was good. Based on this experience would not recommend or go back. Spent $50 on breakfast which was just OK. Better options in the area. read more

This is a local diner with a hometown feel. The food is amazing and you know you're helping a local business. We got the buffet and for $7 got a large piece of meat of our choice. We enjoyed the pork chop and turkey and then it came with 4 sides. I definitely recommend getting the Mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and mash potatoes. First off, a description of the situation. You walk in, go up to the counter and the food is ready to go, you tell the person behind the counter what you want and they plate it up for you. The worry about whether it's fresh or not isn't an issue because they stay so busy it's constantly being rotated with new batches. You can get a meat and one, two, or three sides or customize it however you want. Everything is good, the employees are down to earth and friendly, there's always a table with several older folks carrying on a conversation, no rushing and even though you go to the counter to order the staff comes around to make sure everything is going good. It's all around just a good vibe. The food is excellent too, like home cooking style food, think meatloaf, dumplings, macaroni & tomato, etc. Plus it is locally owned and operated so that's a huge plus as well! The only thing is we had a kind of long wait for breakfast one time, just because of how busy they were and it was an order off the menu, not off the serving bar. Jackson's has always been one of our favorite restaurants. We went a few months ago and it was in the afternoon after the lunch rush. The food was not very hot and the food bins were almost empty but I blamed it on arriving after the lunch hour so we ate anyway. We were there yesterday during the lunch rush and again the food was not very hot. I always get the fried chicken when they have it however it seemed to be prepared the day before. The flavor was just not there. The green beans were so sour I couldn't eat them. I don't mean sour like ruined they actually tasted like they had been cooked with lemon. The prices has raised substantially but again if the food is good I'm ok with the price. Just very disappointed and has put a bad taste in my mouth to the point I may not go back. read more

While in Richmond for a work meeting a group of us went out to dinner. A chain steakhouse was close to the hotel and we headed there and were meet with a 30 minute wait. I checked Yelp for local resturants with good reviews and my fellow reviewers did not disappoint. Jackson's had a 4.5 star rating so we headed there. There were 5 of us and all of us were a bit concerned on first site. It is literally a small diner with minimal parking, dark parking lot of the few spaces they do have and a small but clean indoor seating area. There is a steam table with home cooking, there were probably 3-4 meats, numerous vegetables and lots of desserts and salads on the steam table. We all opted to order off the menu. It was such great food and excellent service. The young girls who took our orders, refilled our drinks and brought our food, checks and free desserts were all so kind, sweet and efficient. Yes I said free desserts. One of the girls ask if it was our first time there. When we told her yes she replied we usually don't give free desserts to larger parties (there were 5 of us) but since you all are so cool we were all offered a free dessert. For meals, we had a burger, pork tenderloin sandwich, 3 Philly cheesesteaks (one made with chicken), all had fries or home made chips as our sides. All were very pleased with our choices. Breads were toasted and fresh, fries were hot and crispy, and home made chips were crunchy. Desserts were banana pudding (excellent choice and a huge serving) fried pies, cherry and apple and a chocolate pie. Again all choices were enjoyed. I'd say this place gets a 2.5. We came into the restaurant and immediately everyone knew we weren't from around there so they were very helpful and attentive (except for my partner who got not very good service). I got the country catfish with hush puppies as the bread, mac and cheese and the fried okra. Was very confused at the food the country catfish was sooooooo salty. The hush puppies were like fried corn bread? Interesting. Mac and cheese had no taste and the okra was the most ok thing I had. All my friends I came with also had either super salty food or food that had no taste. There wasn't much seasoning anywhere to be found. Just salt or no salt. Also, the restaurant definitely isn't very covid conscious in terms of seating. The staff is all masked but there's not a lot of seating. If that is a concern definitely take out. read more

Jesus Christ the food here is great, and cheaper than fast food! They could charge more than double if the moved into a modern place and spent a bunch of money to upgrade the decor. Hell they might be able to do it now. This place is keeping American food alive. I can't count the number of times I've been disappointed but not here. Visited Jackson's for the first time, was looking forward to it because I had visited a meat and 3 restaurant in Nashville (Arnold's) and loooved it. This place was a bit of a let down though sadly. Food was just kinda bland or overly salty. I expected true home cooked food like what I had in Nashville but it was more like half homemade? You could tell the gravy that went with the mashed potato's was McCormick..nothin wrong with that, I make it at home..but it's a lil pricey for that a packet gravy. Went there on a Sunday night. First time. Tasha gave us the run down on how things work and was very helpful. I had the fried pork chops, fried potatoes, and broccoli casserole. My wife had the fried chicken, fried apples, and Mac and cheese. She is the cornbread eater and I had the roll. Two clean plates, we then were offered the first timers desert. The wife had strawberry cheese cake and I had lemon meringue pie. With two cokes the total was less than twenty dollars. Place is wheelchair accessible. Has plenty of parking.
