Good wine selection. Good coverage of Bordeaux, CA Cab, CA Pinot, and Australian Shiraz. Weak Burgundy, fair CA Zinfandel selection, and barely adequate Italian wine selection. If you're into the hard stuff, Jackson's has a GREAT selection of Scotch Whiskey, Great selection of Bourbon, great selection of high-end liquor, and good selections on rum, tequila, and gin. (Good selection on beer too!) The prices are hard to beat on hard liquor. The wine prices are good to fair. Very knowledgable staff, especially on the hard stuff. I am holding my judgement for a few more days, but they seem to be impossible to get shipments from. I ordered a case of wine on 6/22. A shipping label was created and my credit card was charged on 6/23. However, my shipment has yet to move. I have sent 3 emails asking for information, and even though they promise to get back to you in one business day, I am still waiting for a response 5 days later. I ordered this wine 11 days ago. Jackson's is simply the best liquor store around. Their selection of single malt scotch is amazing as are their prices. Their wine selection is also really good. If they don't have a wine that you would like, they will happily get it for you in a few days. I don't buy much beer, but they are the only store that even has beer from Kloster Andechs. I have been going to this liquor store for over 25 years and I've always been greeted by helpful and polite staff, but after what I experienced today I will not be back in that store. I came in to get a couple bottles of wine for a dinner party. A white haired gentelman offered to help and I asked him about a medium red wine, thinking that pinot noir was considered medium. When he told me that the pinot noir is a light red I responded "Oh, Really" and he suddenly went off on me saying how his been in the wine business for so and so years and he knows yada, yada , yada. I had to calm him down and tell him I wasn't questioning his knowledge, I was just surprised. But that wasn't the sinker, I asked for a dessert wine and he led me to a 53 dollar bottle that he claimed is great with chocolate. I wanted to get more info about that wine, but his cell phone rang and he said he had to take the call. Thinking this would be quick I waited for a few minutes, but he had no intention of wrapping it up and helping me. I thought it must be some kind of emergency, but it a personal call about catering. Really, that can't wait. To top it he then follows me to the register (while continuing to talk on phone)and the clerk asks if he was helping me, I guess to the get commision. As I'm walking out the door he thrusts a dove bar in my hand, for the wine (still on phone) I wish I told him to stuff the bar up his over inflated sense of worth. I used to love the fact that Jackson's had a nice craft beer selection and is just down the street from my house etc.... "used to love" but, I've lost the love for this place. There is a grouch working there that has now TWICE chewed my daughter & I out loudly in the store. The first time months ago returning a keg, my daughter wants to help her daddy so she is carrying the empty keg into the store.... The dude screamed at her first to set the empty keg down then screamed at me about it as well. I let it go and though the dude was having a bad day. Fast forward to last week and I'm in there with my daughter again, my hands are full with 7 maybe 8 cans of beer I had picked out and my daughter tells me I should get this IPA over here so I ask her to open the fridge and grab 1 for me. Mr Grouch again friggin YELLS at my daughter to put the can down and proceeds to chew me out AGAIN about my kid touching a beer can in the store. I go up to the counter and set my cans down. I can buy beer lots of places, Hop Grenade is right by my business... I'm done with Jacksons. I told the dude at the register that I was not happy about that and also told him I would not be back.. Fuck that place. My daughter is 11. She didn't need to hear this crap from that asshole. read more

I have only been in this store twice in my life and I have lived in the area forever. My husband had a wine cork remover that got broken and he had trouble trying to replace it. The ones that the servers in restaurants use (because they are very light) just were too hard for him to use successfully. He bought another one and I wanted to make sure it would work, so when I was on another errand in Lafayette, I stopped in at Jackson's to check out the one he had bought. The man who waited on me completely took apart a brand-new one and showed me how it worked. He couldn't have been kinder or nicer and my husband was very happy with the same one he had bought. The other time I went in, I wanted to buy some nice wines, a white and a red, for someone who had done something really nice for me. I knew she knew more than I did about wine, so I asked for help and they picked out a very nice wine of each color, but not hugely expensive. My friend emailed me and thanked me for the *really* nice wine, so I know they did a good job. Such very very nice, friendly small-townish people, which fits this area nicely. read more

What a great find in Lafayette. I called a few local shops to seek out a wine we discovered earlier that week, no one seemed to carry it. When I called Jackson's Wine and Spirits, the man over the phone was very knowledgeable of the wine and noted that they carried it. I headed over there to find a nice stock of the wine. To no surprise there were quite a few other viable options to pick from. The shop was loaded with an array of beers (domestic and foreign) and wine amongst rows and wall space. I've read the other reviews and was surprised that some have said the staff is unfriendly. That has not been my experience. I have been shopping at Jackson's since 1968--first when I lived in Lafayette, still when I lived in Danville, and now I drive all the way out from Brentwood. If one has an occassion when the wine pairing must be perfect with the meal, Jackson's is the place to go. The staff has always been helpful and suggested alternatives in terms of price range, assuring me that any one of their recommendations would please my guests. So far, 100% accuracy. read more

I'm mostly a big fan of Jackson's. Certainly, their single malt whisky selection is unrivaled in Central Contra Costa and the prices are hard to beat. When I used to drink more single malt than I do now, I don't think I ever saw BevMo have a better price on any bottle of whisky than Jackson's. Occasionally tied, but BevMo was consistently 25% higher than Jacksons for a bottle of single malt. Sure, the manager can be a little cantankerous -- especially if he thinks you think you know more than him -- but the service is quick and to the point. That said, their beer prices have really crept up over the last few years and aren't noticeably different than even Whole Foods. Still, it's mostly my go-to package store if I'm picking up something in a hurry. (I don't drink wine at all, so I just can't speak to that). read more

Great store, knowledgable staff, but flimsy bags! I bought 2 bottles of wine, forty dollars total, here based on their recommendations, and they were bagged in a thin, flimsy small paper bag. As I got out of my car at home and picked up the bag from the passenger seat, one of the bottles slipped out of the bottom of the partially glued thin bag and smashed onto the sidewalk, soaking my shoes and jeans with sauvignon blanc. Ggggrrrrrrrrrr! That bottle was a special birthday gift for a friend for a party tonight. Dammit. Fortunately they said they'll replace it and I took photos of it smashed on the sidewalk just so there is proof. Consider bringing a sturdy canvas grocery bag just to make sure that special bottle isn't enjoyed by the sidewalk instead of the giftee. read more

Several saturdays ago there was a balding employee named Larry here who was extremely rude when I asked for his help in finding a nice bottle of wine, he seemed drunk and reeked of wine with purple teeth. I guess they were doing a tasting but he was visibly inebriated and belligerent. He was swaying when I was checking out with another clerk who was very nice. I was tempted to take my business elsewhere but everyone else here is so nice and so I just bought my wine and left. read more

I dropped into Jackson's Wines for the first time because they are local and seem to have a good collection of wines, per yelp reviewers. I was wondering about the customer service, given some of the reviews. The yelp reviews were pretty accurate. 1. They have a reasonable variety of both domestic and foreign wines, with both high cost and low cost wines. There prices are ok, not great. You can probably get much better prices at Costco or Safeway. However, they do have wines, such as Dumol, Beaux Freres, Round Pond, and Pahlmeyer, that are not a readily available at the other places. However, the Safeways have a very good collection of high end wines for a very reasonable cost. 2. The customer service is not horrible because it was basically non-existent. You can not say they delivered bad service when no one evens acknowledges you or says anything to you. I was in the store for over 20 minutes, on a weekday morning. There were 3-4 employees present, and maybe one other customer the whole time. From the time I walked in till I left, no one came by to see if they could help or if I had any questions. Employees walk right past me without saying a word. I was looking at their high end wine section also.. I left but actually came back 10 minutes later because I did have a specific question about if they carried certain specific high end wines. So, I went up to an employee and asked. His responses were "Don't know" and "Don't know". He did not bother to ask any of his colleagues or the manager. So I think that I'm getting my wines from somewhere else. Maybe it was because I was dressed casually in jeans and a sweatshirt and I'm Asian. They need to realize that they can't entirely judge a potential customer by appearances. When I buy wines, I usually dropped anywhere from $100-10000 at a time. In fact, I'm going up to Napa next week to pick up $1500 worth of wine (one case) that I bought directly from a winery. May be I'll go to Solano Cellars instead for wines not available at Safeway. They're further away, but maybe the service is better. Maybe it's their schtick, but I have been insulted just about every time I have encountered the old guy with the grey beard. I didn't have my wallet with me, and after we browsed for about twenty minutes and went up to pay they asked to see both of our IDs even if though he was paying. didn't have mine with me and they said I had to leave the store. They may have a decent selection of products but it's not worth dealing the rude attitude or the contempt of a poor manager.
