Ooo! We came here for the first time last night on a rare date night as my mother-in-law was visiting, so we had someone to watch the kids. I found this place because I was looking for somewhere with sour beers! They had not one, but two sours on tap. I had the Slang du Jour by Drekkler which is a Key Line Pie smoothie sour and it blew my mind it was so good! The bartender described it as crust forward which made me laugh! The bar is fun and doesn't feel like it belongs in Walnut Creek and I love that. It's pretty basic and rustic inside. It feels old timey inside. The bar is in the back and they also have a wide selection of bottles beers. There is an entire wall of fridges with a great selection of beers that you can have on site or take to go/home. I'll keep that in mind for the future as I love sour beers which are harder to find than basic beers. The bartender was knowledgeable and my husband remarked to me that this looked like the perfect job for him. He was right at ease and was approachable, but also knew his stuff. Great combo. The actual bar area was full of people, but there wasn't much seating at the bar, so it was full. So, we sat in the front. We were there the last hour it was open, and there was still people hanging out, but I think the vibe would have been different a bit earlier. Well have to come earlier next time. They also have trivia night and comedy nights, so it would be fun to come for that sometime. Anyway, I could definitely see us going here again. This is a nice surprise for Walnut Creek! read more

Was in town for business and seeing how it was such a nice day and all and what better bonus is there to find a parking spot with meter already in it on such a beautiful day. Great cozy little spot if you like the weird stuff. Ain't no PBR or Budlight in here. Props to having the sours as well as pliny the elder on tap. One of Walnut Creek's hidden gems, it has a cool, rustic atmosphere and a solid tap list of esteemed Bay Area / California breweries. They also have amazing beer from dozens of great breweries available in cans to drink there or to take home. Some bartenders have been far more knowledgeable than others about the beer, but they've all been super nice. Trivia night is another huge plus, and it's written, which differentiates it from all the digital ones nowadays. read more

The service was good. The ambiance was nice before 6pm. I guess it was trivia night or something and the lady hosting was very rude. This was our first time here and we sat near the door and setup unknowingly. She came in, set the microphone and some other things on our table and didn't say anything. So I asked her to move her things as we were enjoying ourselves and she stated "it's almost trivia time." We ended up leaving since it was full and our table bombarded. Popped in on a recent Saturday afternoon for a quick drink while hitting the Contra Costa Beer Trail. Got a little 'tude from the server (sorry, didnt catch their name!) but the beer was cold and full of flavor. Love the overall selection and the to go bottle shop. After the recent ownership change, I feel like the heart & soul of this place left. Maybe I just miss all the amazing and super informative team members who didn't stick around, and I should give it some time...and maybe it will just never be what it once was. I've seen the new owner in here a couple times now, and no real effort put in to say hello or make eye contact with anyone at the bar... maybe just caught him on super busy days. Totally get what's going on with inflation and the supply chain too, but the jump from $7.50 for your average west coast IPA to now pretty much $10 a pop across the board, is tough to swallow (literally). Again, not the new ownership's fault, but some sticker shock on that tab for sure. As a beer lover, and this place being close to home, I will definitely continue to stop in from time to time, but oh how I miss the original Øl, with the staff that was as awesome as the beer. read more

Tremendous little beer bar. There are a lot of these popping up all over but this place has been around for a while and is under new management and is a really well run place. They have a great selection of beer and we try to go there when we can. Plenty of parking. Trivia nights on Tuesdays is always fun. Owner Ali is a great guy. They have some beers we can't find in other places around the area too, so that's always wonderful. You have a lot of choices as far as beer bars like this and this is one of the best. Awesome place. This is a small bar tucked away in downtown Walnut Creek. The first Thursday of every month, they have a free stand-up comedy show organized by Imaginary Friends. This was our first time attending the event and stopping into the Beercafe. When you first walk in, it has a German beer house kind of feel. It has high ceilings, lots of wood, and dimmed lighting; a perfect hangout spot with your friends after a long day. The bar is in the back of the cafe with a refrigerator full of different beers you can buy to bring home. I am not a big fan of beer, but I really enjoyed the fruity/sour beers they had on tap. The Ol Beercafe & Bottle Shop is a hole-in-the-wall beer bar and bottle shop that is tucked away on Giammona drive right behind Dan's Irish Sports Bar. I came here with a few friends while bar hopping some months ago, and we decided to stop by the Ol Beercafe for a couple brews before we migrated over to the next stop. The inside is pretty small with just a few tables available for seating and a tiny bar that's located in the back. There's no table service here, so you need to order at the bar and bring your drinks back to your table. I wasn't too familiar with many of the drafts that they had available, so one of the bartenders let me sample a few so that I could decide on something that I liked. They do carry a nice variety of tap beers here from some of the popular local breweries such as Henhouse, Allagash, Altamont, and Mikkeller. Although they provided splashes of the beers for me, they weren't the most courteous bartenders that I've encountered. Not sure if it was because I wasn't sitting at the bar, but both bartenders seemed super preoccupied. I decided on the Laughing Book Monk of Palms Pineapple Ale which was super light and refreshing! The atmosphere is very casual and low key with a high volume of neighborhood locals and hipsters that primarily frequent the bar. Someone stated in a previous review that this place is very loud. Although I didn't have the same experience, I can see how this could be an issue during busy nights since it's so tiny inside. Despite its' size, the Ol Beercafe carries a pretty large selection of bottle beers and wines. Overall, I think that it's a solid choice for enjoying a nice beer in low key environment with friends. read more

Great selection draft and bottle. They have a nice vibe going inside, medium lighting with dark wood, playing chill music. Made for a great way to spend a few hours hanging out on a Sunday. Perfect for a meet up, there's room for privacy and not too loud. I was low on charge and they had chargers behind the counter, and even USB-C. (That's pretty rare). This is sort of an upscale beer and bottle shop in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek. The beers are a bit upscale as well as are the prices. They have all kinds of more exotic, Belgian beer that you don't readily find Elsewhere. For example, they had an entire keg of Pliny the Elder available, as well as bottles of the same. In fact, the coolers near the bar have a ton of beers to choose from. They give a discount if you pick 6 bottles. There's also a different price depending upon whether you drink it here or to go. The shop is right next to the Lesher Theater, which means you're going to have to pay for parking of course. Parking at the meters is just $1 per hour, and they accept credit cards. The atmosphere is a little bit more serious than craft breweries and tap rooms I've been at. But I got good service and in fact my beer today was free since keg had just bottomed out when he poured my dark ale, and there was quite a bit more foam than normal. So if you're looking for an upscale Tap Room with a great selection of European beers, this is a good choice. read more

ØL is a perfect refuge from downtown Walnut Creek. After a long day of appointments and errands, this is the kind of place I like to relax with a beer and a snack. And the selection is amazing! There's a small bar area towards the back with some additional retail space for beers that aren't on tap. I decided to ask the bartender for her recommendation based on some flavors I generally like in a stout and she made two very nice recommendations. It seems like they have a revolving seasonal selection and there really should be something for everyone. The bar itself was full but there were plenty of tables in the front room. After a bit we decided a snack would be nice so we ordered a cheese plate. It was hearty, and just the sort of thing you'd want to share. It was only the late afternoon when I visited, so it may be louder in the evenings, but it was quiet during the day. This was my first "legit" bar experience and I love the vibe I got from it. I went on a pretty slow night, but it seems like a pretty intimate bar venue to grab a couple drinks with friends and sit and chat. I'm all for casual, social drinking and this place has the right atmosphere for it. They have a lot of ample seating and a wide selection of craft beers in the fridges at the back. I didn't get to try anything on tap or draft (I'm not the beer connoisseur). But, they do charge you more for the bottle to drink inside rather than taking the bottle to go. Overall, this place has that small, very crafty and hipster vibe which any beer lover would love hanging in. The atmosphere and vibe in the room is a bit grungy with the right amount of space for yourself or for sharing with others. Cool place (if I loved beer more)! I like this bar. The taps are always changing and there is a great selection of beers you can purchase and take with you. The bartenders are always friendly and serve you quickly. Everything bottle necks at the bar so you might have to wait a while to get your drink. But most of the time it's pretty low key and cool. Kind of hip, kind of snobby but in a way where you know you are going to get great craft beer and not coors. No offensive to cheap beer but you're not getting it here. Depending on the day/crowd it can be relaxing to chat with the bartender, learn about the different beers on tap, sample a bit and enjoy one or two. Not surprisingly, bartender and crowd dependent. Definitely not a gastro-pub. Limited selection of small plates and only adequate pizza from Skipolini's. I guess I'd say "rustic ambience" to describe it. Beers priced as usual for dedicated up-market brew spots (that is - not cheap). But Belgians aren't ever cheap so what can you do? If the food aspect was a bit more robust I'd be here more often.
