While visiting my friend 5-ish years ago things didn't sit quite right with me. She was in the hospital for nearly a month with an excruciatingly painful kidney infection that just wouldn't heal quickly nor easily. To me, that seemed odd... but I'm not a doctor. She didn't seem to be getting what she needed to heal properly. Upon being discharged she sought other doctors for prolonged care. About two years ago, my mom fell and dislocated her shoulder. I took her to the emergency room at Baptist Beaches. Knowing she was in pain, she wasn't actually seen for any type of care (just checked in and places in a room for several hours before even meeting the ER doctor. While waiting she wasn't given anything for her pain, either.... Not even some ice to place on the shoulder. Once the doctor came him he was VERY short with her and spoke rather rudely, almost as if to childishly mock her because she, too, was being short and raising her voice. However, she was the one in pain! He even threatened to 'walk out of the room and not come back' after she told him that she didn't want morphine. She related it to another family member's death and it was an unpleasant trigger for her. He behaved quite immaturely as I waited for him to stomp his feet as he left the room. I literally had to be a referee for the two of them. To this day, my mom STILL cannot lift her arm much higher than where her elbow is. However, that is in part because she didn't go to physical therapy after her injury. A couple of months ago, I again had to take my mother to the ER immediately following a visit with her general practitioner. It was discovered that she had a blood lot in her leg. To this day, we don't know how big it is, if it's dissipated, where she's bleeding from, or exactly how serious it was. We DO know that this visit was much more palatable for her 5 day stay. The nurses were more polite and orderly in their interactions with her. They seemed to be knowledgeable and very thorough with their responsibilities and communications. In both cases, I'm grateful to have had an emergency room so close to her home!

As she is now in her 80's and in failing health it was imperative she receive the top care of healthcare professionals who specialize with what she has. There are only 3 doctors in the state who can treat her for what she has. Hence, Jacksonville is one of the medical facilities one is at and we were very pleased with the Mayo Clinic. The facility is top-notch, the campus is modern, clean, and the staff is terrific. Everyone we came in contact with were helpful and knowledgeable. The place is beautiful, art everywhere, places to sit and relax, history of the Mayo family and how it all came to be, photos, and information. This was all just in one part of it where we were, the ER and Davis Building. They also have quality places to eat and even a full Starbucks here. This is a state of the art hospital with world class physicians. Walking the corridors there an air of calm knowing you or your family member are being treated by the best.

Island Doctors, with at least 55 clinics state-wide, is owned by Dr. Roy Hinman, a physician headquartered in St. Augustine for at lest 40 years. I presented to Dr Quinn one day complaining of a bladder infection, which seems pretty basic. She ordered a urine culture, and asked me what I wanted prescribed for it, as it indicated bacteria and blood. My husband and I happened to work in the healthcare field for a combined 50 years, but, since when do you ask the patient to prescribe what they want? Bizarre! Well,, the culture report can back on a Sunday via Labcorp's website, and results showed very resistant bacterial infection, and antibiotic Dr. Quinn put me on would not work. I called the office first thing the next day, and they claimed results weren't final yet! i waited all day for callback from Dr. Quinn, and finally afete 5 pm she called to tell me she had to consult with Dr. Hinman. These 2 "genius" doctors ordered me to take 5000mg Vitamin C daily for 10 days! No way in hell is that going to cure a rare bacterial infection like sepsis! With HMOs you can't easily get a second opinion, so I took myself to St. Vincent's ER, and when I explained all to the ER doctor, he was in disbelief that the antibiotic indicated on the lab report had not been ordered. He said no amount of vitamin c would have had any affect, which I knew. That doctor ordered the right antibiotic, and I was fine in a week. Incidentally, just as I was walking into the emergency room, Dr. Quinn herself tried to call me, but I was unable to get to my phone. She knew damn well she prescribed the wrong thing! We never returned to Island Doctors, but immediately went with Conviva Senior Care, which is a night and day difference!

Very disappointing experience…read more We had a very bad experience during our visit today. After checking in, we waited in the lobby for several minutes before staff called us into an exam room, where a male provider and a nurse were present. The provider asked questions, and we answered them. My child's symptoms were clearly visible on her face (a rash). I even asked whether antibiotics might be needed. No explanation was given, and we were sent to another room. After waiting more than an hour with no one checking on us, I pressed the nurse call button and asked what was going on and what we were waiting for. Later, another staff member came in, examined my child, and said she would prescribe an antibiotic. At that point, I was already frustrated by the long wait and asked, "Why wasn't this done in the first place, and why were we waiting so long?" Instead of apologizing or providing a professional explanation, she responded very rudely, saying: "He wasn't a doctor; he was a nurse and cannot prescribe medication. I am the doctor, and we have a lot of patients." However, this statement was not true. According to the visit documentation: * Justin Nippert, DO, is a licensed physician (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). * Jessica Rachael Holder, APRN, is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. This means the male provider present earlier was in fact the doctor, and the person who spoke to me later was not a doctor. I also recall that Dr. Nippert prescribed medication for my other child during a previous visit several months ago. To make matters worse, when I went to the pharmacy, one of the prescribed medications was not covered by our insurance. Instead of waiting for the pharmacy to contact the provider and request a substitute, I had to pay out of pocket to avoid further delays in my child's treatment. Being given incorrect information, spoken to rudely, left waiting without communication, and placed in a situation that caused unnecessary out-of-pocket expense is unacceptable. Due to this experience and the lack of professionalism, I do not want this provider to treat my family again.
