I decided to try this restaurant based on the reviews. I checked online to make sure they were open (it's Monday afternoon) and the website said open now. The website allowed me to placed my order online and was given an order number and told the order would be ready in about 20 minutes. I went to get the order and to my surprise, they were closed. I called the store number and the message said they are closed on Mondays, please call back. They apparently have been closed on Mondays since last April, yet they have not changed the website to reflect the new hours, nor have they fixed their site to reject any order being placed when they are not open. Sending new customers on a wild goose chase is not the best way to generate repeat business. I WILL NEVER TRY THEM AGAIN and suggest anyone else pick up the phone and call them because their website is very unreliable. read more

I'm new to the area and i have tried them twice and both tomes the food was on point. I had my food delivered the first time and it was wonderful! Tonight i picked my food up to check the place out and was very pleased. Its a small spot but clean and the people were friendly and helpful. I think i may have found my new spot. read more

This is the second time I have tried Jacky Chen's. The first time I was unimpressed and thought I would not try them again. But, in desperation for Asian food in a hurry, (they are fairly close) I placed a takeout order. Actually, nothing has changed since last summer. The chicken wings are so over cooked and dried out and hard. The shrimp fried rice is fairly tasteless and light on the shrimp. The shrimp lo mein is actually the worst I have ever eaten. All in all, it just isn't good. This time I threw away their takeout menu and I won't order again. I will start an earnest search for good Asian takeout in my area. read more

I eat here like 3 times a week, i give them atleast $30 a week. I am a returning customer. Today I ordered my usual, in which the lady told me she knows me and and my order (General Tso Chicken with shrimp fried rice) ... I opened my food and i had regular fried rice.. I called up there for them to fix the mistake when the lady told me they didn't charge me for shrimp fried rice.. and that she wasn't going to fix it. The food is good, what makes me mad is I am a regular customer, they made a system error and didn't want to fix my food. They didn't apologize or anything, she even said she remembers me because i get the same thing everytime. They have now lost a regular customer. read more

I absolutely LOVE this place. They deliver to my house even though I'm outside their delivery area and it's always in a timely manner. I've never had a problem ordering there as far as language barriers, a few times the person who answered sounded like a native English speaker. One star and I havent even tried the food. Its been one hour since we ordered, food has still not been delivered. Just received a call that they got the address wrong, she proceeded to spend 10 minutes on the phone with my husband having him spell the address multiple times. Seriously felt like I was yanking someone's teeth just trying to place an order here. I had to spell out my street name 7 or 8 times, and they didn't understand the military way of spelling either, (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc) so that made things even more difficult. After finally getting my address down, they told me my house was too far for them to deliver. 3 miles is too far, apparently. This was the first Yelp recommendation under the delivery category so I assumed they were within distance. Lady was rude and got very frustrated with me when it wasn't my fault that she couldn't understand me, so good food or not, we'll be avoiding this place in the future. read more

I moved to the area from St. Louis. I am accustomed to St. Louis Chinese and I love it. When I moved here I tried every Chinese restaurant in Portsmouth, it was all horrible! Then someone recommended Jacky Chen and so I checked it out. I love their food! It has been the best I have tried in the area. Unfortunately, I have to drive about 20 minutes to get some of the amazing food. But, it is so worth it! I suggest getting a combination plate, it is a lot of food for a great deal!!! read more

We've ordered in a number of times over the years from Jacky Chen - food is decent, customer service definitely needs some work. They're the closest Chinese restaurant with decent food, so we have continued to order from them. However, a year or so ago, we placed an order with them and didn't receive our egg rolls (though we paid for them, to be sure) - when we called to let them know, they said they would give them to us on our next order. Right. Well, just to be clear, we never got our egg rolls. I placed an order for delivery tonight - met their minimum $$ for delivery and are within their delivery range - then received a phone call from them to say "driving across town isn't worth it." **Here's a suggestion: change the delivery minimum, or change your delivery locations.** When he asked if I still wanted the order - "if I wanted to add more food" - I said that if they weren't going to deliver, then no. He then hung up - no, "sorry about that," no, "okay, goodbye." Nothing. Very well. Last time we order from Jacky Chen. I'm not asking for a lot - just a little customer service. read more

First time dining on a recommendation. Jacky's moved to the top of the take-out list, replacing the past go-to on the same road, and that recently re-located across from BB&T. Used two spicy favorites in making a determination for a rating: Kung Pao Chicken lunch, $5.25 (they spell it Po on the menu), and a pint of hot-n-sour soup at $2.75. The dinner-sized lunch portion of really solid chicken with lots of veg had creeper heat. Soup was better than a typical serving from other stores with more veg, chicken and mushrooms than usual. Heat was also creeper, not overt. Combined with the Pao, I appreciated the sheen of sweat that they produced. Time to start going down the menu item by item, and beginning with the boneless spare ribs app and twice-cooked pork. read more

I have ordered from here a couple of times. Each time was pretty basic...just average. The first time, I ordered the sampler platter. everything was ok. the springs rolls were the best part. or maybe the beef on a stick. it was pretty good too. The rest was meh. the chicken and pork were devastatingly overcooked and really salty, the Rangoon was a weird texture, and the shrimp were way over breaded resulting in mushy fried overcooked almost completely dehydrated shrimp. The second time, I ordered sesame chicken. the sauce was off...seemed to have an extra ingredient that threw off the balance of the dish. too much five spice or something. The broccoli pieces were really soggy and white around the edges. strange and not appetizing. I think this was my last time at Jacky's. Wish they delivered but with Covid, completely understandable. Was looking for a new place and found this one close by so I gave it a shot. I fed my whole visiting family of 8 for like $60 so it was definitely well worth the price. Not only that, but because I had a large order the man at the counter gave me some free drinks on my way out. It was really busy but I got my takeout in like 5 minutes. I was in my car about to roll out and it was POURING when the man at the counter came SPRINTING out with the egg rolls I ordered (they had forgot to put it in the bag, and honestly, it happens. If you've ever worked in the food business its understandable) and felt really good that that they tried hard to fix such a simple mistake, when he got soaked in the process. And lastly, none of us had upset stomachs or felt gross after which is sometimes the case with Chinese. Great food taste, great service, definitely recommend. My new spot for sure. read more

Worst chinese food I have ever had. I ordered general tso with white rice and crab rangoons on the side. It took 50 minutes for my food to be delivered to my house and I only live a mile away. All of the food was cold. You could taste how old the oil was. The crab rangoons tasted like they were microwaved, they were so hard! Jacky Chan would be ashamed lol read more

This place should close their doors. I could have bought better food from the frozen food section of the out business grocery store next door! Boneless spare ribs were tough (old) and tasted like Heinz 57 sauce... egg rolls and sweet and sour pork were heavy with oil with a fishy taste, which means the oil was old and past the point of needing to be changed. Even the Fortune cookies were stale. Service was mediocre. The kid at the counter was wearing a "stoner" shirt, not very professional nor was he engaging. We waited about 10 minuets and brought food home, which was about a. 5 min drive. read more

Ordered from here last night & even with the road conditions plus crummy weather they were willing to deliver to our home which was slightly further than their typical delivery. We did have to have a minimum of $25 for our order. We were happy to find that the Chicken with Cashews as well as the Orange Chicken both tasted really great. The best chinese takeout in the area BY FAR. I live in Northern Suffolk and have tried a few of the other take outs near by, but this place is better. I don't mind driving ten minutes out of the way to pick up better food. More variety of veggies in all of their dishes and there isn't a lot of grease in the food. read more

I love Chinese food. After reading reviews I thought I would rate this a 5 star but to me it is only slightly above average - 3.5. Writing to inform others to not be let down as I was. Order taker was a nice Chinese lady, probably the owner. She was unfriendly, straight, and to the point; like you find in a good Chinese Restaurant (no problem). Ordered general tsos chicken with white rice. I asked if she could ask chef to make a little hotter than normal and she told me it was hot enough. When I opened it back at my office it was yellow fried rice not white. Chicken looks good with thick dark red sauce but the broccoli is white around the edges (wish I took a picture). To me the sauce was above average. The chicken quality was same you get anywhere else for fast Chinese. The chicken was not crisp but mushy. The hot an sour soup was better than the meal. The soup was chunky and flavorful. Did not want to finish the meal which is extremely rare for me and I did not have breakfast. Do not think I will go back here. I think Szechuan Inn off Portsmouth is slightly better and a little more authentic. Also still trying to get to Imperial Palace off Baxter Road in VB one of these days. A take out Chinese restaurant is a take out Chinese restaurant. Really, no high expectations there. But this place was even lower than my low expectations! First we will start with the phone call that was short and curt and I was hung up on before I realized she was done talking to me, not even a "thank you" or "good bye" or reading back the order to make sure it was right... or even a total?!? Ok, no problem. I didn't order for the pleasantries, I want to eat! Now we can all agree that we don't eat Chinese for its health benefits but COME ON! The chicken was rubbery and had all the flavor cooked out of it. The lo mein "sauce" was pretty much just pure vegetable oil with a hint of soy sauce. Seriously, you might as well chug the economy size bottle of oil right at Walmart and it would be the same. Not even MSG could save this. The egg rolls, however were pretty decent. Best pork fried rice I have ever eaten! This is definitely our go to Chinese take out place. We usually do large orders when we have relatives visit from out of town and it's usually a big hit. In fact, my family usually requests Chinese take out from Jackie Chens when they visit. The lady who answers the phone is very nice. Sure, there's a language barrier, but it has never impacted the accuracy of my order. She has even given us free tea and lemonade at times to thank us for placing large orders. I really love Chinese food and although this is not PF Changs, it's great for a take out restaurant. read more
