    Small Smoke - YUM!
    Dee W.

I stopped by Mak's Chinese in Berkley on 9/27 for a small smoke ( my favorite) and some Yock (757 thing, if you know you know). Mak's is a Norfolk staple, with fresh food, fast service with no frills. Strictly takeout and has very reasonable prices. The smoke was good as always with a really good brown gravy and is served with two soft rolls. The shrimp Yock was ok. I had to take it home and doctor it up a little bit, but for the price, you can't be mad. Plus if you grew up on Yock like I did everybody got their own way of eating it in terms of flavor profile ( spice, sauce, vinegar, egg, etc). If you don't know, get it the know.

I came here to try the legendary yock noodles. This dish is unique to Norfolk/Portsmouth, VA and is rapidly disappearing. It a unique hybrid dish created in Chinese restaurants in African-American neighborhoods. The noodles themselves are a soft, simple noodle, similar to a lo mein noodle, but with a different consistency. They are served with a mixture of soy sauce and ketchup, with chopped raw onion, and a choice of meat and boiled egg. I chose the pork option, which had about 5 good-size chunks of roast pork included. They even sell the uncooked yock noodles in bundles on the counter for those who want to cook their own. It is a simple combination, but it works. It was created out of a need for a filling dish for little money, and it meets that need perfectly. It still costs less than $5, for an amount that could easily feed two normal adults. I'll be honest, this isn't a dish I'd seek out again, as it does not have the flavor profiles I normally seek out. That's not the point though. This is a historic dish, a real taste of this community, and I enjoyed experiencing it. It is pretty decent, certainly greater than the sum of its parts. If you're like me, the ingredients certainly don't sound like they'll be good, but I assure you, it is. Give it a try before the last few real Yock places go away.

Best chinese food in the area. My faves are beef and brocolli and shrimp egg foo young. It's close to my house but I would make the drive if it wasn't. Oh, and you can't beat the prices!!

Absolutely unacceptable! I have photographs of the filter, the food, and my receipt. The filter was found in the meal, and I am not interested in speculation about whether this could have happened--it did happen, and I have evidence documenting it. What has been equally concerning is the response I received when I reported the incident. Rather than acknowledging my concern, I was told that it "could not have happened." I was told that the business has operated for 15 years and that something like this does not happen. While I appreciate the reputation the establishment has built over the years, I found that response disappointing and dismissive. A history of good service does not change the fact that I found a used cigarette filter in my food. I have actually been a customer of the business for years, which is one reason this experience is so upsetting. I expected my concern to be taken seriously and investigated rather than immediately dismissed based on the assumption that it could not have occurred. My goal is not to argue about whether the incident occurred--it did. As a customer (now former), I believed my concerns deserved a thoughtful and professional response.

Came here with a friend of mine who absolutely loves hot pot. I had actually never had it before,…read moreso I had zero idea what I was in for. But honestly, it turned out to be such a fun and tasty experience! For anyone who hasn't tried it: hot pot is basically a big simmering pot of soup right at your table where you cook all your own food. You pick all your ingredients from soup, veggies, meats, noodles, mushrooms, whatever you want and drop them into the hot broth to cook. It's super customizable and kind of like a mix between soup and DIY cooking right at the table, which is actually a blast once you get the hang of it. We both went with a hot, spicy soup base which was perfect for warming up on a cold day. I threw in broccoli, mushrooms, ribeye, and noodles. The best part is watching everything cook right in front of you and then pulling it out when it's just right. The broth soaks up all those flavors and gets even richer as you go. The flavors were amazing! Really bold and satisfying. The spicy broth was exactly what I needed, and everything we added came out perfectly cooked and delicious. It was warm and cozy, which made the whole thing even better since it felt like the ultimate cold weather meal. I look forward to retuning and trying something completely different!
