I grew up eating small smokes as a kid almost every week while at my grandmother's hair salon on 31st and Colley Ave (Venus Beauty Salon). There was a neighborhood staple called China Inn that sold some soulful Chinese carryout dishes. They've since closed and my mother and I always talked about that food especially the small smokes and a few other favorites. We've even tried to find the sausage at the international grocery stores to prepare the dish ourselves, close but not it. Well well well...I recently moved back to the areas after being away for 25 years and I mentioned the infamous small smoke to my childhood classmate. She sent me Mak's Yelp page and I was sold off reading the first few reviews. No frills type of spot, no problem...that sometimes makes the spot even better and sometimes considered a gem to those who appreciate good soulful Chinese joint type of cuisine. I quickly called my mom and said we have to try Mak's. I quickly called her back and said, don't forget to add sautéed onions, because that's how we've always liked it. She drove from her house to pick up the food and to mine with an order for two. Off the first bite we were both like yep we finally found it! The only negative and my reasoning for the 4 stars is although the rolls were warm and soft, I no longer could enjoy my gravy sausage slider like I did as a kid due to the bread not being the best quality while tasting too bleached/processed. Now if this was a Hawaiian roll I would've crushed that joint lol. All in all, I promise you I would've never found this spot if it wasn't for my friend...thanks to her and thanks to the Chef's at Mak's back there doing the dog on thing in the kitchen. Can't wait to try the shrimp and pork fried rice, Lo mein, Yak, and shrimp egg foo young. Nostalgia wins again! read more

I stopped by Mak's Chinese in Berkley on 9/27 for a small smoke ( my favorite) and some Yock (757 thing, if you know you know). Mak's is a Norfolk staple, with fresh food, fast service with no frills. Strictly takeout and has very reasonable prices. The smoke was good as always with a really good brown gravy and is served with two soft rolls. The shrimp Yock was ok. I had to take it home and doctor it up a little bit, but for the price, you can't be mad. Plus if you grew up on Yock like I did everybody got their own way of eating it in terms of flavor profile ( spice, sauce, vinegar, egg, etc). If you don't know, get it the know. read more

I came here to try the legendary yock noodles. This dish is unique to Norfolk/Portsmouth, VA and is rapidly disappearing. It a unique hybrid dish created in Chinese restaurants in African-American neighborhoods. The noodles themselves are a soft, simple noodle, similar to a lo mein noodle, but with a different consistency. They are served with a mixture of soy sauce and ketchup, with chopped raw onion, and a choice of meat and boiled egg. I chose the pork option, which had about 5 good-size chunks of roast pork included. They even sell the uncooked yock noodles in bundles on the counter for those who want to cook their own. It is a simple combination, but it works. It was created out of a need for a filling dish for little money, and it meets that need perfectly. It still costs less than $5, for an amount that could easily feed two normal adults. I'll be honest, this isn't a dish I'd seek out again, as it does not have the flavor profiles I normally seek out. That's not the point though. This is a historic dish, a real taste of this community, and I enjoyed experiencing it. It is pretty decent, certainly greater than the sum of its parts. If you're like me, the ingredients certainly don't sound like they'll be good, but I assure you, it is. Give it a try before the last few real Yock places go away. read more

This is just good old fashioned Chinese food!!! Made fresh to order, and super friendly service!!! This place gives you that hometown feeling and has been a staple in Hampton Roads for years!!!!! I've been to this Chinese restaurant 3 times and they have not failed me yet! THE BEST smoked sausage, rice and gravy (or simply called a "Smoke")in town!! Their smoked sausage has a bit of a mild kick to it. The gravy is dark brown and thick. They give you two rolls with the meal. It's enough for two portions. Stopped here for a quick bite to eat before heading to a meeting nearby. Plenty of menu items to choose from, but spouse was intent on a sweet-n-sour chicken dinner with vegetable roll, so we didn't spend any time looking through the myriad Chinese dinner choices. I did notice there is some non-Chinese fare. There are seat for a few patrons, four or five tables. Decently priced. Ordered generals chicken lunch special. It came with rice and egg roll for 5.25. Fried rice had a dark brown color to it I had never seen anywhere else. Chicken was cooked well but the sauce had its own unique consistency. All in all, ok, but i won't go back. read more
