Wan shung is top 3 Chinese you gonna get in Norfolk hands down, food portions are great.

I've ordered 3x from Wan Shung in the last 3 months and they have not disappointed me yet. Don't know if they deliver to my area because I've been using Door Dash but the Door Dash price is heftier. I will say that I've read other reviews and it seems as though people either love this place or really don't care for it. With that being said, many of the reviews are older so perhaps they have changed hands a time or two, just guessing. I've tried the following dishes: Crab Rangoon- it was ok Hot and Sour Soup- It had good flavor Egg Drop Soup-it wasn't fantastic but it was good egg drop soup Egg Drop with Wonton Soup- I love this soup. I ordered a pint of this and could not finish it because it is so filling. It is a pint of egg drop with two wontons in the pint. Beef and Broccoli with steamed rice- this is hands down the BEST takeout beef and broccoli I've ever had. I love the flavor, it wasn't greasy or stringy and the broccoli was not over cooked. Beef Lo Mein- I ordered a pint of this dish. The meat is cooked perfectly, the noodles were flavorful, plenty of veggies and it was not greasy. I feel the need to mention when Chinese takeout is not greasy as the dishes that I pick typically end up being greasy. Also, the container looks as though there isn't much in there, but trust me it's a meal big enough for two people. I dumped the noodles out in a large bowl and thought "there is no way I can finish all of this". Also, I will post pictures of their current menu as the ones that are currently posted are out dated. We had good service when we have ordered from there before. I called in today at around 4:30, and the order was taken. When my husband showed up to pick it up, it was closed, and there was no indication that they were closed. According to him, a few other people were there waiting to pick up their orders. This was the worst Chinese food I've ever tried. I have no idea what the 4-5 star ratings are talking about. Trashing food is not something I take lightly, but it was so bad that I had to throw out the entire order. The "chow mein" was boiled, gooey vegetables. When I called them, the "restaurant manager" tried to convince me that chow mein is an "old people food" and that it's not a noodle dish... The Kung pao chicken was just sweet and gooey. Hunan chicken was the same but without the peanuts. Chicken also has that weird smell/taste that comes from refrigerating and reheating -- it was old. There was no spice or flavor in anything. It's as if they heavily watered down the sauces and then just added sugar and cornstarch to make it thicker. read more

I got the chicken lo mein and crab Rangoon for a lazy Friday night. Let's just say I was happy that's all I got. The lo mein was tasteless, even for Chinese take out. The crab Rangoon barely had any filling in it and you can taste the oil as you bite into it. I know that Chinese take out isn't authentic and I wasn't expecting the best food. We gave Wan Shung a try after our regular place recently closed. Not sure how we missed this restaurant when we first moved to Norfolk, but so glad we came upon it. Wan Shung is our new go-to for Chinese takeaway. For our first order we had: egg rolls, spring rolls, chicken fried rice, chicken lo mein, curry chicken with onions, shrimp with garlic sauce, and vegetable egg foo young. For two of our dishes we had specific requests, I.e. vegetable egg foo young with mushrooms and onions only. Everything, and I mean everything, was prepared to perfection. I wish I had thought to take some photos, but everything looked and smelled so good we couldn't wait to dig in Another big plus which makes us love Wan Shung even more - the shrimp was deveined; clean as a whistle. First of all, let's give a HUGE shout out to businesses like Wan Shung that are open on Xmas Day to serve the customers that don't feel like cooking on this day! I got there today at 11:10am and this was my first time seeing the parking lot damn near packed! Go ahead and get that Xmas bag, Wan Shung!! I knew I was not going to cook a dern thing all day, so I had 2 orders of General Tso's chicken and a small order of boneless spare ribs. I mainly order those 2 when I go here. I've sampled some other items on their menu and never had a problem with the taste or order. They have closed their dine in area since Covid blew up on the scene last year. They do have 3 seats in the area where you order. While waiting for my order today, we were pleasantly amused with the singing of the staff's children singing Christmas carols on the other side of the wall in the old dining area. Visiting the area and needed to find a place that delivers. Unlike several locations that I contacted, Wan Shung did not have an hour wait time. I ordered the Gen Tso Chicken Combination as it came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. The Orange Chicken (pictured) was just as tasty. We are regular customers here. Food is usually excellent. Tonight was good too. However, the young man that took my order was surly and unhelpful. I don't usually ask them to honor their menu coupon that says 2 free egg rolls for orders over a certain price. Tonight I asked him to honor the coupon that is clearly posted on their menu and he refused, saying I had to have a coupon from another source outside the restaurant. The coupon doesn't say that but he rudely told me he wouldn't honor it. He hardballed me on the coupon so I told him we wouldn't be back. I wasn't sure what to expect from the highest rated Chinese food place around but left satisfied. The location is small and service is fast but the food is delicious. They lose one star for the lack of cleaning and small seating. The sanitation is questionable at best, but I can overlook it for the flavor. I ordered the chicken chow mien quart for about $7.50 with the crazy taxes and devoured every bite faster than a monk after a year long fast. The food even smells good when they cook it. The orange chicken my fiend ordered did look much better though. The seating area is small, there are about two cooks and a small lady that takes your order. It's really nice having an Asian person cook your Asian food, it just seems more 'authentic' than some white guy. Trusting people cook your food is like trusting people with your kids, the first impression matters. read more

I travel to the Norfolk about once a month to visit my in-laws. We were super hungry and didn't feel like cooking so we decided to try Wan Shung. Our go-to Chinese delivery place. First, there is no delivery fee, so that's a total perk. Secondly, the food tastes great and gets here so quickly. They always estimate about 45 minutes, but I swear we get the food within 25-30 minutes nearly everytime. The guys that deliver are also friendly. My favorite, like many others, is General Tso chicken and my husband varies been Burboun Chicken (really good) and Sweet and Sour pork. We also order crab rangoon. If you've never had it, it'll be the best $3.50 you've ever spent. Deep fried-crabby goodness. Got the crab Rangoon and orange chicken. Nothing inside the carb raggon hollow and bland. The orange chicken was disgusting the worst thing in the world. It was hard abs very chewy and tastes like poop. Serious the only reason I knew it was orange chicken was the pieces of orange that were in it but no flavor. The fried rice was just colored yellow. The only thing good was my white rice, and the egg roll that came with the combination plate. My bag didn't include any utensils, or the sweet and sour sauce I requested along with my crab rangoon. I love Chinese take out stores (even some can be a little sketchy) but this has been my go to spot for 3 years. I live within walking distance of this place and by the time I call to the time I walk there, the food is ready. Great price for a great portion of food. I usually get the orange chicken with white rice and crab rangoons and it will last for a dinner and a lunch the next day. About a year ago we had a huge snow storm that brought the Hampton roads to a stand still, roads covered in snow and ice and power off for as far as the ocean front. This place is right down the street from my work so I've been here a few times when in need of a quick and cheap lunch. They have a $5 lunch special which includes rice, soda or egg roll or soup. Even though General Tso's Tofu isn't on the lunch menu, General Tso's Chicken is and I have ordered the tofu substitute on several occasions in the past with no trouble. Today I was told General Tso's Tofu is not on the lunch menu and I had to get the regular order for $8.95. Ok, fine, I don't really have time to go somewhere else. I get out my card to pay and I am told there is a $10 minimum for cards (even though I have purchased the $5 lunch menu previously on my card with no mention of a minimum). Ok... I go out to my car and grab my emergency cash. I get back to work and start to eat and the tofu is terrible... overly crisp on the outside and raw on the inside. The broccoli was extremely overcooked, and I was very disappointed with the 4 tiny pieces of broccoli that were included. The lunch special has a good mix of tofu and veggies but apparently I can't get the lunch special anymore. What a disappointing lunch. I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because I have previously had decent experiences here, but I definitely will not be going back. read more

This restaurant is right down the road, and I go probably 3 times a month. My wife likes the seafood soup, and usually go with the general tso's chicken. I've also tried a beef dish that I simply can't recall the name of, but it was similar to beef & broccoli. All of the things we've had have been good, and the prices can't be beat. As a chef, I took notice of how clean everything is. I like to chat with the owner's son when I pop in, he is always good to talk to. I usually base my rating on how well restaurants are accomplishing their own goals, and it looks like Wan Shung is hitting the mark doing what they set out to do. read more

I think we have found our new place for delivery Chinese! We just moved to Norfolk and were alittle skeptical at first since it looks like they could use a renovation soon. However, this is a hidden gem!! We both ate full dinners including appetizers and a nice tip with a $20 bill. Basic American-style Chinese food, mostly done satisfactorily, and delivered with friendly efficiency ... you can do a lot worse than Wan Shung. We've ordered from them twice, and been largely satisfied with the results. The menu is straightforward and very basic ... most of the Chinese restaurant staples are represented, but nothing more. No lamb, no fish, no scallops, very limited vegetarian or shrimp options -- and don't look for bitter melon, or crispy tofu, or crispy eggplant, or duck! That being said, the food, in general seems to be pretty well done. Appetizer-wise, both the hot and sour soup and the wonton soup are flavorful. The egg rolls are enormous, and slightly greasy, but have a nice flavor as well. (Ask for mustard, if you use it! They don't seem to automatically send any.) Entrees are mostly fine, too. They seem to do especially well with white sauces; the biggest winners so far have been the moo goo gai pan, and the chicken chow mein ... I don't even LIKE chicken chow mein, and I liked this. The Kung Pao Delight, with chicken, pork, and shrimp, was nicely spicy and generally successful though the pork was a little tough. Beef with broccoli was unremarkable but fine. The only thing we've been unsatisfied with so far has been the fried rice ... it's a very unusual style of fried rice -- an odd yellow colour that almost looked curried -- and it's a bit dry and strangely flavored. I wouldn't order that again. Prices are moderate to cheap, and (AND THIS IS HUGE!) they offer pint-size portions of most dishes, even at dinner time. So you can order small sizes of more things, or just order a light meal, if you wish. There are lots of specials and deals at both lunch and dinner, so this can be a highly affordable dining option. Don't dine in. They have a few tables, but that's not their focus and that's clear. The actual space looks a little down-at-heel ... don't let that worry you. As a delivery provider, they're quick, and have both times arrived earlier than estimated. Staff seem friendly, and while there is no online ordering, placing the order by phone was easy and the employee who's taken my orders speaks very good English (not something I always count on when ordering Chinese!). Overall, while it's not changing the face of Chinese American cuisine as we know it, Wan Shung does a perfectly serviceable job with the basics, and does it quickly and affordably. read more
