A downgrade based on two recent visits-- one dinner and one lunch, ordering essentially the same items, with an extra app on the dinner visit. Let's see how they compare. Dinner visit: -- Fried Wontons (appetizer): Available in two sizes; I got the small and got plenty. The nice thing about these is that they're meat-filled, which you rarely see at similar restaurants. Good flavor and moisture, avoiding that dry empty crackle you get elsewhere. Crisp with bend. Elite. -- Sweet and Sour Chicken (combo): Small bowl atop the plate to hold the sauce in. And a great sauce it was, delivering both the sweet and the sour without much glop. Crisp, non-puffy batter. Different looking chicken: instead of lengthy fingers, they're plump little mounds. This gives a good meat-to-batter ratio and keeps the chicken not only moist, but downright juicy. They might have used dark meat. Numerous cherries and even chopped pickles. Near-elite. -- Egg Roll (on the combo): Narrow crisp shell around an all-green interior of mixed greens looking like it came from the produce section without much chopping. Minimal pork. Average this night or a bit below, though usually above. -- Boneless Ribs (on the combo): Some five spice mixed in with the standard issue red. Neither dry nor juicy but closer to dry. Likely reheat. A bit below average. -- Pork Fried Rice (on the combo): Good amount, decent color and flavor, a little on a dry side, but not bad. Hints of old school flavor and feel. A little above average. Late lunch visit: -- Sweet and Sour Chicken (combo): Again in a separate bowl, again golf-ball-sized chunks of battered chicken, with decent crispness and a nuanced pinkish red sauce underneath. Chicken tender and mostly dark meat. Sauce again nicely sour as well as sweet, and included bits of chopped cucumber as well as pineapples and cherries. Elite. -- Egg Roll (on the combo): Thin, but crisp with green bounty inside. Much more celery than cabbage, some pork, and a pleasant seasoning. Had that old school sawdust texture but not dry. Near-elite. -- Boneless Ribs (on the combo): Short and thin with dark red paint and a little char. Another long-held item or (more likely) reheat. Flavor was okay, but these were so dry they were inedible. Well below average. -- Pork Fried Rice (on the combo): Looked decent from far away, but this was sitting around a long time if not literally reheated from the night before. The pork nuggets looked just as tired. Numerous rice clumps, which can happen when you refrigerate it. Dry and lacking flavor. Below average. Inconsistency for sure. You take the good, you take the bad, you take it all and there you have the facts of life regarding Jade East in Tewksbury. This place can be really good when all the stars are aligned. I am here from Florida visiting family, needed real Chinese food (what I grow in with). Went here for lunch. I had KUNG PAO BEEF, they both had a lunch dinner. When I ordered I asked for it to be spicier than normal. OMG it was great, just the right heat and so much flavor. A they don't skimp on size... you will have take home. The service was horrible. There were only 2 parties (including ours) and we waited for 10 min before I got up to get the printed menus. The beef and broccoli was the only decent dish, the pork fried rice tasted like it was 3 days old, the crab rangoon was rangoon with no crab meat and it had a funny taste to it, the beef teriyaki sticks tasted like the teriyaki was burnt and the skewer splintered into the meat and lastly the sesame chicken was drier than the Sahara desert. Horrible food. Couldn't eat this if I was starving. Server was all alone but did a great job to get orders correct and food to the table fast. That's my only compliment. Jade East is your typical outdated Chinese restaurant and lounge where all your local townies go for strong mai tais, scorpion bowls, and typical Chinese food. The mai tais are my go-to, they're really good and they are served over crushed ice which is always a plus. I don't find that too often anymore. Oh- and there's Keno. It's hard to find a complaint about this place, the foods always good and the drinks are always well worth the $7 to $9 per cocktail (what a steal!). Not much more to say about this establishment but Jade East has always been and always will be a staple to the town of Tewksbury townie culture. read more

I have been going to the Jade for 40 years and they have hit rock bottom. When you get shut down for health reasons then you re-open and increase the prices, it's expected of the Poor ownership (and she is particularly NASTY) I love the bartenders but have to say I'm done. The food is good, yes, but the combo plates leave a bit on the table. Meaning, the cooks must have dropped the other half of my order on the table. I ordered the G 'dinner' plate. This is a lunch combo at best. A little scoop of rice, 5 pieces of chicken and a few boneless ribs. Maybe this is the hosing they give because it was a take out order and not eat in. Kept alive solely by townies who have never ventured into different cuisines until stepping foot in here, I unfortunately ordered takeout here to start my new year. I got the family bean curd while my friend got the mapo tofu (it was literally spelled wrong on the menu), and my family got about 4 other dishes including fried rice and lo mein. I already felt a twinge of regret before getting off the phone because they said "15 minutes." For all that food? I was in here recently for lunch takeout. The lounge looked quite busy around 2:30 PM on a Saturday. I ordered the L30 Mar Pao Tofu ($7.75 plus tax) served with pork fried rice and 2 spring rolls, which was ready to go in about 10 minutes. The portion of food was generous, piled into a square styrofoam box. The Mar Pao Tofu had a mix of soft tofu cubes, peppers, onions, mushrooms in a semi thick mild spicy light brown sauce, the flavor was lacking though. The pork fried rice had a soft texture (light brown color) with mix of roast pork, onions, and egg. The spring rolls were very greasy, which were filled with shredded cabbage, carrots, & mushroom in a very crispy thin deep fried wrap.
