Food: Crab rangoons were above average, nicely plump and tasty. Not too sweet, not too much crispy edges. General Gau was crispy and stayed crisp even as leftovers, which is not always the case with GG. Rice was average, nothing very memorable. Drinks: People talk about the "very strong" Mai tai's, but they don't taste as good as they look. They are the traditional dark brownish but are different than we're used to. Same with the white mai tai -- tasted like ginger ale and vodka, which is not how I usually get them. Service: Fantastic, very attentive, on top of things and genuinely concerned about the customer experience. Ambiance: Kinda weird. It was extremely quiet when we went on a Saturday (quiet as in many people in the bar area but dead silence.) My husband and I were visiting family in the area and decided to stop for a light dinner of soup and an appetizer. We ordered the house soup and the Peking ravioli. The soup was okay. It had a lot of meat and vegetables..but not a lot of flavor. The Peking ravioli which was like a dumpling. The ravioli dough was way too thick and they were cold. We asked the server if they were meant to be cold - and she apologized. She took them back and we believe they were zapped in the microwave. The service was good. I went to this restaurant because of how much people were hyping it up to me. Usually I goto Boston for great hotpot but I wanted to find a place in the local area to goto so I don't have to always make the drive out to the city. Went around lunch time, restaurant looks like it just opened. Staff were very nice. Food- There's a minimal amount of broths you can choose. It's single serving hotpot's. There's a great choice of different meats, vegetables and seafoods combos you can choose from which is good. Quality- Broth wasn't too good, I didn't enjoy it too much. Almost tasted watered down at times. Sauce wasn't too appealing either. Meats and vegetables were very good. Seafood tasted like it was still thawing out of the freezer. Overall- Really pricey spot for the Billerica area. It's a spot to go if you really wanna try out hotpot in the local area, but keep note that there's many more local spots. I haven't heard anything but good things about Purple Bamboo and I finally go the chance to try it this weekend. This was our first time trying hot pot and our server was excellent at showing us what to do. She even helped us cook the first few items and informed us about the cooking times for the meats and veggies. She was just so friendly, sweet and attentive we felt so at home. You know how people have a comfort food for bad/good situations? Well I have a comfort restaurant. Purple Bamboo is that place. When I have a bad day, I come here to feel better. When I have a cause to celebrate, I come here. The hot pot here is the reason for coming. I've had a few appetizers, but none of the non-hot pot mains. Look for a review of those elsewhere. The hot pot is incredible. Our order every time is the same (2 people): 1 beef, 1 lamb, 3 udon, 2 dumplings, 1 enoki mushroom. The meat is tender and flavorful. I'm also a huge fan of the enoki mushrooms as something that is tender and adds flavor. My husband gets the spicy broth and I get the mushroom. The spicy broth is wicked spicy so try at your own peril. Another tradition of ours is the scorpion bowl for two. The little cup in the center of the bowl is full of straight alcohol for a final WOOHOO. Fully recommend. Great waitstaff and a great gathering of locals. read more

I'm pretty new to the area and I'm pretty picky about Chinese food. I came in for lunch with my daughter on a Tuesday afternoon. Place is beautiful inside. Service was amazing! Food was served quick and was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the pineapple fried rice. The crab Rangoon are actually made with crab and they are some of the best I've ever had. The orange chicken was also delicious. Portion sizes are out of control. We could've fed 5 people with the amount of food they gave us. Very happy to have such a great place in my new hometown. So I went to eat hot pot with my mom because she been wanting to eat it for awhile and we usually come here because it's closer to home, we went we ate I had 2 beers everything was good we stayed a lil bit after because i was trying to finish my beer about 5 mins in there was 1 waiter and 1 waitress serving us, mind you the bill came out to 198 and I tipped 15 dollars the waiter came back and said the waitress didn't like that I didn't tip 10 percent like I'm suppose to remember how much percent i was generous enough to tip, I'm like what I just paid damn near 200 bucks at your restaurant and you're gonna complain about my tip isn't enough, they should be happy I ate there and spent that much I could've made it at home and saved me some money and the waiter had the nerve to flash his money like I care, ruined my meal and I was with my mom, can't help someone who's unappreciative they will never see me step foot In there ever again they lost a loyal customer. read more

I was pleasantly surprised after finally trying out this place. I've been hesitate about coming here, but I'm glad I finally did. The restaurant has a lot of parking. Inside is very spacious and the tables aren't as crowded next to each other as you would typically see at other Chinese restaurants. It was very clean. Our waitress was wicked sweet and so attentive. I came here with three friends just for hot pot. We all got individual sized pots. The dipping sauce was great. You have the option to add garlic, scallions, and hot chili oil/paste into your sauce. We ordered from the a la carte and a couple of other things from the product sheet. The spicy broth was tasty and had a lot of flavor. It was at a decent level of spice, although I was expecting it to be spicer. Everything we ordered tasted fresh. Between the four of us our total ended up being around $80, which is not bad at all for the amount of food we got. We had a coupon, which made the deal even better (keep an eye out for those). This restaurant is a great find outside of Boston where hot pot restaurants are scarce. They do take reservations, but you might not need one. The place was not very busy at 7:30pm on a Saturday which is too bad because the food and service are wonderful. Everything was fresh and offered at very fair prices. We left feeling very satisfied with the wait staff and our meals. We certainly plan to come back in the future. read more

We love hotpot and come here often when we don't feel like driving into the city. They have individual hotpot bowls so it's nice when you have different people wanting different broths or preferences. Service is very pleasant. However this last time we went, the broth (spicy Chinese) was waaay watered down almost to the point where it seemed it was just water and some Szechuan spices thrown in. The broth is the most important part. Then they included a 20% service charge in the bill for our party of four. I happen to look at the bill more closely, which I don't usually do. This is a new hot pot (shabu shabu) restaurant which came from a hot pot chain in Northern China. So if you come here, the main focus should be the hot pot. Although they have American Chinese items as well, but those are for just in case you are not welling to try hot pot or people prefer PuPu plater. For those of you who are new to the concept of hot pot or shabu shabu. It's a self serving cooking as you eat style. You get your personal choice of broth heated by induction stove top in front of you, so be careful. Then you have your choice of meats, normally thinly sliced beef or lamb, or seafood, and different kinda of vegetables, noddles. Take turns to add meat or vegetables into the broth, cook them and eat them. Similar to fondu, but some ingredients needs longer cooking. For beef and lamb, you can cook them for 10~15 seconds in the bubbling part of the broth for medium well result. For some of the thicker vegetables like daikon, yam, winter melon, you can leave them cook for 5+ minutes for tender. So, if you are adventures, try the hot pot and you can ask the wait staff to help you understand it more. This place just opened on 8/8/15 for trial run, so things are little slow and disorganized, but I think it will be better shortly. read more

When first learned a Chinese hot pot restaurant opened in Suburb of Billerica back in September, my friends and I were pleasantly surprised but somewhat doubtful. Yet temptation of authentic hot pot was too great to pass. It turned out to be great food exploring adventures. Since then, I've made several trips with family, friends or colleagues. Needless to say, we were never disappointed. The first impression was its welcoming space, bright and spacious decorated with tasteful arts, a sharp contrast to a typical Chinese restaurant. Unlike most hot pots served in Chinatown restaurants with a heat burner in center, you get to have a personal burner and pot filled with base soup of your own choice, similar to Japanese shabu shabu. Order your own main courses either with combo (meat/seafood, assorted vegetables and noodle) or la carte with more choices. Traditional dipping sauces (Sesame seeds paste or Seafood sauce) also come with condiments of minced garlic, scallion and hot pepper paste. The quality and freshness of ingredients really set this place apart from the field. Thinly sliced marble textured rib-eye could melt in your mouth. It reminds me of kobe beef I used to enjoy in Japan. The restaurant also serves typical Asian cuisine. I didn't have much expectation but ordered pu pu platter anyway for my kids. It was actually everything but typical. The presentation and flavors made my ever picky boys ask to come back again. I took that as a good sign. :) During the last trip there, we were recommended to a classic chinese dish, Fish Fillets in Hot Chili Oil. I had tried this dish many times prior including at locally well known Sichuan Gourmet. I have to say, this was by far the best! Tenderness of fish fillets and crunchiness of precisely cooked selective vegetables with perfect hot and spicy flavors, is everything you could ask for for this dish. My salute to the master chef who's behind all this. The restaurant is still new. Given the quality of the chef, fine cuisine and physical setting, I expect the restaurant to quickly excel into a popular place for local residents. Will we go back again? I've been driving by Purple Bamboo, a new restaurant in Billerica on my commute for a few weeks now. The restaurant recently opened up in August in an awkward location on 3A near McDonalds/Stelios. I finally got a chance to visit for a birthday celebration with 6 other girls on a Fall Sunday evening. The restaurant has a main dining area with a bar as well as a separate dining room featuring tables with built in burners for hot pot. Hot Pot or "Shabu Shabu" or "Sukiyai" isn't a new concept but the popularity is growing. Boston's Chinatown alone features many eateries with the nabemono style of eating with restaurants like all you can eat Hot Pot Buffet, Shabu Zen and The Q. The "cook your own" meal features a variety of meats, seafood and veggies that you can choose to cook and simmer on your own tabletop served alongside with other noodles and condiments. Once we arrived at the restaurant, the server was quick to take our drink orders. A few got Pina colodas and a couple of us got Patron Tequilla shots. What's a birthday dinner without birthday shots? We also put in a couple appetizers from their Chinese menu and ordered the scallion pancakes and salt and pepper calamari. One of the differences that sets Purple Bamboo aside from Hot Pot Buffet and Yong Yong is that the hot pots are individual and not shared. The meats and vegetables are also a la carte or from a set meal and not unlimited. Diners have many options and variations to choose from. For the broth base, prices range from $1.00 to 3.00. Chicken broth Spicy Chinese broth Mushroom broth Tomato broth Vegetable Broth The popular choice for our table were chicken (which many said it was VERY bland), mushroom and spicy Chinese that was reminiscent of a Thai Tom Yom flavor. For those who wanted to keep it simple, there were 5 combinations that included noodles and assorted vegetables: Top Grade Rib Eye: $22.95 Prime Rib Eye: $19.95 Beef: $14.95 Lamb: $14.95 Seafood Combo $24.95 I didn't like the fact that everything seemed "dime and nickel-ed." For instance, you had to pay an extra dollar if you wanted sesame or seafood sauce to flavor the bland broth although the garlic and scallion was included. For carb options, choices were udon noodles, rice noodles or white rice. The udon noodles were prepackaged and served in a bowl with its packaged square shape intact. The portion of the meat and vegetables were very generous and the tables were easy to use. Once everyone got their items, it was time to feast. Since some of the ingredients took longer to cook (corn, taro, etc), those went in first. Items like the ribeye are better off blanched and eaten medium-rare (in my opinion at least.) The individual hot pots had lids so they meal would cook faster. Instead of doing the hot pot option, I wanted to try a few entrees from the "Asian Cuisine" menu which has Chinese fast food staples like beef and broccoli and general gau chicken. The flounder in tomato sauce looked intriguing so I went with that as well as orange peel beef. You can't screw that up right? When I ordered the flounder dish, I imagined it would be a whole flounder steamed or deep fried and covered with the tomato sauce. It was actually served with battered boneless flounder fritters accompanied by a tomato dipping sauce. Nonetheless, it was delicious. The orange peel beef was on par with other Chinese restaurants. It was very good but my favorite version is still from Sichuan Gourmet down the road. There were lots of vegetables and meats leftover but you can't really pack a doggy bag home for hot pot. Even though I ordered the Chinese dishes, I ate off my friendly neighbor Lisa who couldnt finish her meal among the others who were also struggling. It's best to order a bunch of the items a la carte and share them among the table. Service was super friendly and she was eager to please. She brought us extra condiments and broth bases to liven up the bland soups to improve our dining experience. I think the restaurant was OK. I'd go back for drinks and appetizers but I don't think the hot pot is worth it. I think you'd get a better bang for your buck at an all you can eat place or a group dining place at a Cambodian eatery in Lowell. The food at Purple Bamboo is top notch, better than many Chinatown restaurants. The menu is simple, with several American-style dishes that will surprise you with the quality, presentation, and excellent flavor. The wonton soup is one of the best soups I have ever tasted in any category: the broth is multilayered in flavor, complex and simple; the meat filling is herbed with perhaps mint? Delicious. Food is five stars. However, the business/ front of the house is still working out the kinks. I encourage you to eat here - but please be patient and give good feedback. I've eaten here twice and some serious mistakes have been made each time, like charging the wrong price and then not fixing it correctly, like the kitchen not being ready by noon, serving the wrong dish, excessive waiting. The quality of the chef and the cleanliness and attractiveness of the physical space indicate capability to excel.
