General Gau was crispy and stayed crisp even as leftovers, which is not always the case with GG. Rice was average, nothing very memorable. Drinks: People talk about the "very strong" Mai tai's, but they don't taste as good as they look. They are the traditional dark brownish but are different than we're used to. Same with the white mai tai -- tasted like ginger ale and vodka, which is not how I usually get them. Service: Fantastic, very attentive, on top of things and genuinely concerned about the customer experience. Ambiance: Kinda weird. It was extremely quiet when we went on a Saturday (quiet as in many people in the bar area but dead silence.) My husband and I were visiting family in the area and decided to stop for a light dinner of soup and an appetizer. We ordered the house soup and the Peking ravioli. The soup was okay. It had a lot of meat and vegetables..but not a lot of flavor. The Peking ravioli which was like a dumpling. The ravioli dough was way too thick and they were cold. Usually I goto Boston for great hotpot but I wanted to find a place in the local area to goto so I don't have to always make the drive out to the city. Went around lunch time, restaurant looks like it just opened. Staff were very nice. Food- There's a minimal amount of broths you can choose. It's single serving hotpot's. There's a great choice of different meats, vegetables and seafoods combos you can choose from which is good. Quality- Broth wasn't too good, I didn't enjoy it too much. Almost tasted watered down at times. Sauce wasn't too appealing either. Meats and vegetables were very good. Seafood tasted like it was still thawing out of the freezer. Overall- Really pricey spot for the Billerica area. It's a spot to go if you really wanna try out hotpot in the local area, but keep note that there's many more local spots. I haven't heard anything but good things about Purple Bamboo and I finally go the chance to try it this weekend. This was our first time trying hot pot and our server was excellent at showing us what to do. She even helped us cook the first few items and informed us about the cooking times for the meats and veggies. She was just so friendly, sweet and attentive we felt so at home. You know how people have a comfort food for bad/good situations? Well I have a comfort restaurant. Purple Bamboo is that place. When I have a bad day, I come here to feel better. When I have a cause to celebrate, I come here. The hot pot here is the reason for coming. I've had a few appetizers, but none of the non-hot pot mains. Look for a review of those elsewhere. The hot pot is incredible. Our order every time is the same (2 people): 1 beef, 1 lamb, 3 udon, 2 dumplings, 1 enoki mushroom. The meat is tender and flavorful. I'm also a huge fan of the enoki mushrooms as something that is tender and adds flavor. My husband gets the spicy broth and I get the mushroom. The spicy broth is wicked spicy so try at your own peril. Another tradition of ours is the scorpion bowl for two. The little cup in the center of the bowl is full of straight alcohol for a final WOOHOO. Fully recommend. Great waitstaff and a great gathering of locals. read more

I'm pretty new to the area and I'm pretty picky about Chinese food. I came in for lunch with my daughter on a Tuesday afternoon. Place is beautiful inside. Service was amazing! Food was served quick and was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the pineapple fried rice. The crab Rangoon are actually made with crab and they are some of the best I've ever had. The orange chicken was also delicious. Portion sizes are out of control. We could've fed 5 people with the amount of food they gave us. Very happy to have such a great place in my new hometown. I was pleasantly surprised after finally trying out this place. I've been hesitate about coming here, but I'm glad I finally did. The restaurant has a lot of parking. Inside is very spacious and the tables aren't as crowded next to each other as you would typically see at other Chinese restaurants. It was very clean. Our waitress was wicked sweet and so attentive. I came here with three friends just for hot pot. We all got individual sized pots. The dipping sauce was great. You have the option to add garlic, scallions, and hot chili oil/paste into your sauce. We ordered from the a la carte and a couple of other things from the product sheet. The spicy broth was tasty and had a lot of flavor. It was at a decent level of spice, although I was expecting it to be spicer. Everything we ordered tasted fresh. Between the four of us our total ended up being around $80, which is not bad at all for the amount of food we got. We had a coupon, which made the deal even better (keep an eye out for those). They have individual hotpot bowls so it's nice when you have different people wanting different broths or preferences. Service is very pleasant. However this last time we went, the broth (spicy Chinese) was waaay watered down almost to the point where it seemed it was just water and some Szechuan spices thrown in. The broth is the most important part. Then they included a 20% service charge in the bill for our party of four. I happen to look at the bill more closely, which I don't usually do. This is a new hot pot (shabu shabu) restaurant which came from a hot pot chain in Northern China. So if you come here, the main focus should be the hot pot. Although they have American Chinese items as well, but those are for just in case you are not welling to try hot pot or people prefer PuPu plater. For those of you who are new to the concept of hot pot or shabu shabu. It's a self serving cooking as you eat style. You get your personal choice of broth heated by induction stove top in front of you, so be careful. Then you have your choice of meats, normally thinly sliced beef or lamb, or seafood, and different kinda of vegetables, noddles. Take turns to add meat or vegetables into the broth, cook them and eat them. Similar to fondu, but some ingredients needs longer cooking. For beef and lamb, you can cook them for 10~15 seconds in the bubbling part of the broth for medium well result. For some of the thicker vegetables like daikon, yam, winter melon, you can leave them cook for 5+ minutes for tender. So, if you are adventures, try the hot pot and you can ask the wait staff to help you understand it more. This place just opened on 8/8/15 for trial run, so things are little slow and disorganized, but I think it will be better shortly. read more
