I have been going to this restaurant for a LOOOOOONNNNNGG time and unfortunately I have to call this last visit my last. On 8/10/2020 I got takeout for my girlfriend and myself and spent $25 which included 2 cups of their mediocre egg drop soup, one order sm. crab rangoon (3-pcs.), a small order of sesame chicken w/fried rice, and a large order of MuShu Shrimp w/fried rice. It was lunchtime so there should have been no reason for it not to be fresh, but it wasn't. The chicken was so dry and tacky, no glaze to the sauce just barely covered. My girlfriend ate 2 small bites of that and said, nay-nay. I tried it and was very disappointed. My 9 month puppy snubbed it. Moving on.... My MuShu Shrimp ($9.00 lg. order) came with about 10-12 of the driest, most shriveled up, very small, tough shrimp I have ever had at a restaurant anywhere. Very unacceptable, especially for 9 bucks, and to top that off, she informs me that the Lg. $9 MuShu shrimp NO LONGER COMES WITH PANCAKES and I have to pay $2.50 extra for 4 mandarin pancakes, which is a first for me....anywhere.. Our soup was passable at best, which would have not have come with any crispy noodles (they have ALWAYS given me one pack of noodles PER SOUP since I have been going there say 9 years!!!) had I not checked my order and asked after I paid to get two small bags of the crispy noodles? They said, OK, and stuffed something in the bag and I get home and they gave me ONE small package of what probably cost them a nickel or a dime to make) So they're going to have to get 11 new customers to try to secure cuz this one has hit the road and with their attitude they often give people you surely can't expect me to not voice my opinion. I have complained about small problems there before and they did correct them, but begrudgingly and with poor customer attitude, so I didn't bother this time. Quality has declined over the past 5 years. Food is edible and some dishes are still fairly tasty. Portion size varies from barely standard to poor. Dishes and appetizers are often pale imitations of standard dishes you may have had elsewhere. They seem to be a hibachi bar of ingredients in back with a variety of sauces and cooks follow a basic kindergarden level list of what pre-prep items to put into each dish and what to squirt into it. Lame. Some dishes are not even half-hearted attempts. Examples from my order tonight: First the Mongolian beef is just their basic beef pieces in a normal stir fry (and not even much beef) with extra onions and a few bits of scallions, other stir fry veggies, and drenched in soy sauce and some hoisin sauce. No spicy note as advertised. This was nothing even remotely like the dish you would get in an actual good Chinese cuisine restaurant such as PF Chang, for example. The portion size barely filled the bottom of the container halfway and maybe 10% was beef. For my fourteen dollars I got craptastic soggy salty veggie stir fry with some soggy pathetic beef bits. And this was a large order! Next up, a large order of teriyaki chicken ($11) gave us three *tiny* steamed broccoli florets next to maybe two tbsp of warmed-up frozen diced carrots and peas in the corner of the container and a shallow lake of faintly teriyaki flavored brown liquid with a half cup of tiny chicken pieces scattered, swimming in the brown sauce-lake. With delivery (who did not follow directions) costs and some seemingly reheated pre-made bland cream cheese rangoons (billed as "crab" rangoons) and bowl of equally bland egg drop soup I spent nearly fifty dollars on food I would have scoffed at for fifteen dollars total. read more

I've ordered Jade Gardens Kung Pao chicken many times in the past, and its usually wonderful. Tonight I ordered it with some fried dumplings. The dumplings were good but the Kung Pao tasted like the chicken was bad. When I reached out to the restaurant I was told "thats how we cook the chicken' Ummm...to taste spoilt? I wanted them to come take the nasty meal away and possibly exchange it with something without chicken in it. Nope, Too bad so sad for me. We tried this place because we've had a couple of friends recommend their food to us. I wish we would have never ordered from here. First off, We ordered sesame chicken, fried rice, and crab rangoon's. Our sesame chicken was extremely salty (coming from somebody who likes salt) and I could barely eat more than just a couple of bites. I then went to the rice to see if it was any better. It turns out we got brown rice instead of fried rice. At this point, I decided to call the company to see if there was anything they could do about our order. I told him that we most definitely got brown rice instead of friend since it tasted like brown rice and it has no visible egg in it. He then proceeded to tell me that "you cannot see the egg in the fried rice" and that "you got fried rice not brown rice". Either I am very confused or their fried rice is absolutely horrible. I offered to bring the food back in for a replacement or refund, and he refused. I usually am not the kind of person to ask about these things, but this was horrible. I don't understand a company that doesn't want to please its consumer base. In conclusion, we will never oder from here again. If it weren't for the lack of help from the employees, we could have been open minded to try other menu items. I believe their lack to compromise has forever ceased their business with us. read more

ETA: the *best* thing on the Americanized menu is the Honey Chicken (under chef's specials). It is incredible. Lightly battered and miraculously crunchy (even after traveling for delivery!) with a crisp sweet-and-salty exterior that is almost a candied shell, it's that crisp to the bite. I like to add a sprinkle of Maldon salt to mine to really even out the sweet and the salty. I end up putting the rice in the fridge, the chicken is pre-carbed with that lovely light batter and stands really well on its own. I order from Jade Garden almost every Sunday night, so not too long ago I started kind of randomly ordering stuff off of the authentic Chinese menu just to branch out and experiment, and try new things. What I learned is that the authentic Chinese menu is where it's AT.My favorite thing on it is the Beijing Zha Jiang Mein. It's basically spag bol, but Beijing-style with a rich sauce made of ground pork, plum sauce, garlic, and fermented sweet/sour black bean paste - it's sweet, salty, spicy, and has tons of swooningly good brain-satisfying umami flavor - all in a really great balance with each other. The sauce is spooned over round wheat noodles much like pasta, then topped with a big spoonful of pickled garlic that you will probably smell before the delivery guy manages to knock. There are handfuls of fresh crunchy cucumber, carrot, and sprouts scattered around the periphery of the dish, and having bites with cold crisp crunchy to alternate with the darkly rich sweet/spicy/savory sauce and chewy noodles is really nice (I actually also order a side of cucumber salad so I don't run out of crunch). Warning: do NOT order the western equivalent off the non-authentic menu, I did that one night (the Americanized stuff is cheaper, I was curious) and it was not good. They left out everything that makes the sauce great and it didn't have the fresh crunchy veggies. Which I guess might make it taste better to some people but I can't imagine. I ended up throwing the whole box out, chalked it up to experience, and made sure to order the Beijing Zha Jiang Mein off the authentic menu the next time. All the flavors, all the textures. There are just some decisions I make in life that I regret for ages. Coming to Jade Garden was one of those. I wanted to plan a goofy, low-key night by doing a movie at home with bad Chinese takeout. Note that I wasn't expecting this food to be good - what I had in mind was MSG-infused sticky soy sauceyness in a paper box - so you can imagine how terrible it must have been to deserve 1 star, even with the bar set that low. Thinking we couldn't go wrong with the typical Bad Chinese Takeout offerings, we had the egg drop soup, wonton soup, sweet and sour chicken, and Schezuan beef. -Egg drop soup: Had far too egg-y an aroma. I could not drink more than 2 spoonfuls. -Wonton soup: This small bowl of msg-infused broth came with TWO pathetic floating "wontons," which were probably each about the size of a penny (YES, a PENNY!) And don't even make me think about the filling, I don't know what was inside but it sure as hell wasn't meat. It was hard and looked like turd (sorry for the image but it's true). -Sweet and sour chicken: Standard. Not a lot of complaints here. They give you the sauce on the side, which is actually a bonus because you get to choose how much of the jellylike MSG concoction to put on. -Schezuan beef: Isn't this stuff supposed to be spicy? It was mild at best. And something was fishy with this meat, as it was a little too soft in texture. But the real icing on the cake was...the horrible food poisoning I had for 2 hours afterwards!!!!! This place clearly serves low-quality, cheap, dirty food. Cheap takeout is one thing but CONTAMINATED cheap takeout is in a whole other ball park. I liked the system of having two different menus: Chinese-American vs. authentic Chinese. The authentic Chinese had a variety of Chinese dishes to choose from. FYI, that menu is all in Chinese, though. I ordered a cold dish and a hot dish, and they were both pretty good. The portions are also decently sized, except in my opinion, they could have given more rice. In addition, the dishes were semi-pricey considering that I spent about $15 for two dishes. My experience has been that cold dishes are typically cheaper as they have smaller portions and take less time and labor to make. Also, I was kind of upset that they immediately assumed that just because I wanted authentic Chinese food, I would not want fortune cookies. When I was in college, we came here just for the cheap food. I know it wasn't great, and I know it wasn't authentic, but it was cheap and filling. Fast forward to me as a 28 year old working just down the street, and I have a bit of a different view of Jade Garden. I don't go a lot, but when I do, I get exactly what I plan - a really cheap, filling meal that's fairly tasty enough. I know it's going to be highly Americanized and not of the best quality, but I do know that going in and it has never tried to be anything but that. The renovations several years ago make it feel a lot nicer than it was back in my college days. It doesn't feel fancy or anything, but it doesn't feel as run down as it used to. Additionally, the food comes out quick and the people are friendly. I've also found they have an authentic menu that is actually printed, so I'll have to get back and try that. After all my trips to China, I love the authentic stuff. My company had a group of 30 Chinese folks in during the fourth quarter of 2011 and they ate a good chunk of their meals from Jade Garden. They made authentic stuff, but the Chinese folks actually liked the Americanized food too (just enough like home but still helping you realize you're in a foreign country). Had the Japanese Udon noodles, Chia Chiang Mien, and Pad Thai. Tried all of those with tofu and vegetables. All were terrific and tasty in Lawrence standards (probably best noodles I had in Lawrence). Great when served hot. Also thought the sushi rolls and maki sushi were decent. Reasonable sizes and comes in 8 for each order (price starts from $4 up). I didn't like the dinner rice dishes. There was either too much sauce (seafood triple delight) or were too spicy (twice cooked pork). Too much bellpeppers and redpeppers and not enough pork for the former. Never actually dined at Jade Garden and had delivery every time. The time to deliver varied from 20 to 70 minutes. They accept Campusfood Cash so if you're a poor college student, try playing Food Friendzy or doing surveys online to get a free meal here. 3 stars for Lawrence standards, and 2 stars elsewhere. read more

Probably one of the most disappointing meals I've had at a Chinese restaurant. I've literally had much better Chinese food from a buffet, or from the freezer section. The chicken had a weird texture and was not really hot, like it was microwaved. The crab Rangoon was soggy and luke warm, like it was microwaved. The soft spring roll wasn't very exciting either. All I could taste was the canned crab. We heard a microwave door close and all of the beeping of a microwave several times as we sat waiting for our food. They just opened up a new section in the restaurant for japanese food (sushi and ramen). We tried the sushi and it's just okay. We also ordered tonkatsu ramen but it's kinda disappointing. The broth was weak and lukewarm. The yakibuta was bland. The whole dish has sort of chemical smell to it, i'm guessing it's from the noodles. Hope they'll improve it because this ramen is supposed to be authentic japanese compared to another ramen restaurant in Lawrence which served "fusion" ramen. Jade Garden has a huge menu that spans Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and more. It's a little overwhelming, but it gives you a lot of choices to try every time. When it comes to Asian food, I tend to shy away from it, but there's something about Jade that's really welcoming to folks like me. I've had the Singapore noodles twice now and they're pretty good! Their veggie spring rolls are awesome and the egg drop soup tastes homemade. What keeps me coming back is how many dishes there are to try; even if some fall a little flat for me, there's still plenty to try. read more

I used to love this place for their spring rolls and hand rolls. Yesterday was the first time I dined in (I usually ordered take out). I should have been concerned when they required you to go to a counter and pay *before* you get your food. My friend and I ordered the beef slice pho. It was disappointing. I know that pho isn't the same everywhere, but I know bad meat when I smell it. The beef slices smelled like they went bad a week ago. The toppings were scarce and the broth was also "off". I tried to eat it but it wasn't sitting well with me. When we finally said something the (I'm assuming) manager came out. Before she came to our table she went to someone else. Then came to tell us that the other customer ordered the same thing and said his is fine Well I'm not concerned about his food. I'm concerned about my pho. I'm concerned that the meat went bad and you tried to cover it with spices. The manager refused a refund of any kind and kept saying that each place makes their pho different. She was insistent that since someone else ordered it that it's fine and we're just "picky". I'm not picky. I'm just wanting a refund on spoiled food. Later that night I had terrible stomach problems and probables at ... both ends. Oh and the drink fountain was all syrup and no carbonation. Avoid jade garden.
