We went out this past Friday night and ended up staying for hours because the atmosphere was so fun and relaxing. Unlike the downtown bar scene, this felt perfect to sit with good drinks and listen to the DJ that night (8pm on), and while some people were up dancing, we were perfectly happy hanging out with our margaritas and enjoying the evening. We started with the sampler platter of queso, ceviche, and street corn, and the street corn is definitely a must-try! I ordered the Birria ramen, which I had to try since I've never seen it anywhere else, and it was incredible. My wife had the snapper, which was such a unique find at a Mexican restaurant, and she said it was delicious. Our friend ordered the fajitas, and we all ended up sharing because we wanted to try all the dishes. We finished with the fried ice cream for dessert, which I haven't seen at many places, and I have been absolutely craving it. Get it if they have it! I really wanted to try and and give this spot a try cuz it's close to home and we love Mexican food. But I have to be honest this was truly bad. The only redeeming qualities were the service was fast/friendly and the presentation is very nice. But as others mentioned, the salsa is strange and much like everything else has no flavor. I ordered a $12 margarita to start and it came in a comically small glass. We ordered the yucca fries and they looked perfectly golden and nicely sized but were nearly inedible from how salty they were. Thankfully the server took it off the bill. My husband got the chile relleno which boasted roasted vegetables but I guess they were referring to the undercooked sweet mini peppers stuffed inside? Also I'm not sure they have a heat lamp for staging. Nothing was hot when it arrived and the cheese his relleno rested on had congealed. I ordered the chicken street tacos which also looked very nice when it arrived but were dry, unseasoned, grilled chicken strips with pickled onions on top but then cilantro and white onions on the side and more of those sweet peppers. I think they're relying pretty heavily on them to provide Mexican flavor but they do not. I want to go on but I don't want to be rude... it's just so objectively bad and overpriced. Considering they'd only been open a few days when we stopped in for a busy father's day lunch this place is already running very well. The menu is upscale Mexican, and the prices are reasonable for the quality. I love what they've done to remodel the interior of this space. It's not upscale and has a nice modern vibe, and the way it is divided up helps control the noise level. We started with the guacamole, a generous serving that benefitted from a squeeze of lime and some diablo salsa that we ordered on the side. The diablo isn't really all that spicy, but added the needed kick. We also tried the tuna tostadas, which were tasty but very tiny--basically just one bite times three. For an entree I had the pork enchiladas. They were beautifully plated and very tasty, and came with good cilantro rise and just okay black beans. We finished with the sopapillas, which were nice and poofy, and served with a hazelnut Serrano sauce. Again, the sauced needed more kick, but was tasty. Special shoutout for the cocktails. The standard margarita was very good, and the Flor de Don Juan was stellar: a mix of tequila, St. Germaine, and lime. read more

I came here on a Saturday night for a late meal and was expecting the restaurant to be packed. To my surprise, it was not! We parked up front and sat at a table immediately. My friend saw an Instagram video of Jag Cantina and we wanted to check it out. We were hoping for a free margarita in our silverware roll up but no luck for us! We started with a round of Cantina Margaritas. They were great, but a smaller portion than expected. The complimentary chips and salsa is always appreciated. The house made salsa looked like, smelt like and tasted like cold spaghetti sauce. They had other salsa options for mild spice and hot, but we kept the complimentary house salsa. I ordered the Chili Relleno for dinner. It was a vegetarian stuffed poblano pepper. I was blown away with how unique and tasty the meal was! I would 110% return for this dish alone. We stopped by Jag Cantina this evening and had a really solid experience. The atmosphere has a nice modern vibe without feeling too trendy or pretentious - just a comfortable spot to enjoy some drinks and food. We started with the guacamole and street corn and both were great. Our server was attentive without hovering, and was very accommodating with our special requests. The drinks are definitely worth trying - I had the jungle punch and my wife had the charred pineapple paloma, they don't skimp on the liquor and they're not overly sweet like some places. For entrees, I had the steak street tacos which were fresh and well-seasoned, and my wife got the baked tostado that she really enjoyed. The portions were good without being overwhelming. For dessert, I had the chocolate lava cake w/vanilla ice cream and my wife had the sopapillas, both were excellent. The location in Windermere is convenient and parking was easy. It did get pretty busy around 6pm on Saturday, so I'd recommend making a reservation if you're going on a weekend evening. Overall, it's a great option for Mexican food, well worth the drive from Lake Mary. Great food, reasonable prices, and friendly service. We'll definitely be back. read more

I was quite surprised to find a Mexican restaurant in the Windermere Neighborhood Walmart plaza area. It was quite new, and loving Mexican food, I had to give it a shot. I arrived on a Saturday evening and was greeted immediately by the hostess. I sat in the bar, where my bartender recognized me. I choose the suggested house margarita (12 dollars). He told me the juices are homemade. It was a decent margarita and refreshing at first, however it was a bit sour afterwards. Also, the tequila provided wasn't strong enough to make me dance to that popular song. For my entree, I chose the chicken enchiladas (18 dollars) with double cilantro rice instead of beans. There were 3 small enchiladas, but decorated nicely with some cheese and pickled vegetables on top. The tortilla was ok, but the chicken looked to be a paste and coming packaged, tasting homemade. It was still filling though. The pickled vegetables were odd, but tasted good. The cilantro rice faired better as it had good flavor with diced tomatoes, but could have been heated up a bit than being served cold. The complimentary chips and salsa were not my favorite, and I agree with the other Yelpers that the salsa tasted like a slightly better than Ragu pasta sauce. Even the habanero hot sauce I requested tasted like the pasta sauce, but just a bit spicier. All of the desserts were 15 dollars, and for the same price, I could just have one at a high end hotel or restaurant and probably get better quality. So it was a no gracias for me. The service was good and friendly. My bartender kept checking up on me and was social as well while still working. He did forget to bring napkins and utensils, but got one immediately when I requested it. The atmosphere is trying to look upscale, but it felt a bit dark. The patrons were social, but it got quieter later in the evening. The music seemed to be bar salsa. This restaurant replaced Black Rock Grille, which I found the previous restaurant just average. This restaurant is a little better, but it didn't seem authentic enough for me. I think the non Mexicans would enjoy this restaurant more as it isn't as spicy, but still the food being decent. I was thinking on giving this a 3, but going to up this to a 4 because of the friendly and good service. However, for authentic Mexican, I would go to Agave Azul a couple miles away. Overall B-. Short version: My birria tacos were $22, and I would have gotten a more authentic Mexican experience and taste from Taco Bell for a quarter of the price. I'm going to start with the positive. The ambiance is pretty solid. The previous restaurant in this location was dark and kinda sketchy, so it was nice to see light in the space. Service was also solid, and we were a large group (15) for a lunch. That's about where it stops being positive. Food was, at best, bland. I had the birria tacos. The meat was maybe an attempt at birria, but in reality had the consistency of an over cooked pot roast. Flavor-wise, there just wasn't anything there. The consomé was just not. It came with a side of black beans that had literally zero seasoning (like, they came right out of the can, and definitely not the ones in a seasoned sauce) and cilantro rice, which despite being the color of cilantro, somehow didn't even taste remotely of cilantro, or any other flavor. I tried bites of others' food, and we all discussed it as well, and it was a unanimous agreement that this wasn't good. One of the people in our group asked for cheese enchiladas (and, there are enchiladas on the menu). The server went to the back to ask if he was able to modify the enchiladas, then came back and said no, they can't make cheese enchiladas. This tells me that the enchiladas are either coming frozen with the chicken in them, or MAYBE they're pre-batching them in the morning for the whole day. The later would imply that none of the food is particularly fresh made, and that the cooks in the back also aren't capable of rolling cheese into a tortilla. I have been to places shortly after they open, and sometimes they do get better. In order for that to be the case here, and me come back and give it another chance, "better" is going to have to be doing a LOT of work in that sentence. read more

The brand new Jag Cantina has the beauty of ambiance inside. The food is very bland, for this type ! If you're expecting a saucy or cheesy experience, it's not happening here. The complimentary chips were purple, & it was not a salsa sauce that was served, but more like a spaghetti type sauce with no kick. The Pablano Pepper was a fried version, with dry large bread crumbs on the outside. Sorry, I'm an experienced "foodie" in Orlando with 20 yrs of dining out. Gave this new restaurant a try but they have a lot of kinks they need to work out to be successful. Biggest turn off was the service. Our waiter forgot about us and we had to wave him down to order. Never came to check on at all through our time sitting there and had to flag him down again for our check at the end. We went on a Friday night and it was not that busy. Also, this being a new restaurant, we expected the waiter to sell us a little bit on the concept, give recommendations for food etc, that didn't happen. We wanted to start with the Chorizo Croquetas but were told they were "taken off the menu" and the menu has not been modified to reflect that yet. I got the chicken fajitas, they were made with chicken thighs that were not trimmed very well. Lots of fat on them, I would have liked to have seen it say chicken thighs on the menu. Salsa and chips are complimentary the first round but if you don't see the fine print on the menu they will charge you $5 for a refill. No other Mexican red around does this. It seems that all places that go in the spot don't last long we will see how long Jag makes it here. My husband and I will not be going back. read more

We started off with some of the freshest guacamole we've had - even fresher than guacamole we've had made table side. The sampler of shrimp ceviche, queso, and street corn was the perfect mix of flavors. Special shout out to the street corn which was super light and not heavy tasting. For our main course we opted for two of their unusual specialities. The Molcajete was a fantastic combination of deeply flavored proteins and chorizo sauce served with warm tortillas. The portion size could have easily fed more than one. We've never had ramen at a Mexican restaurant but the birria ramen was rich and flavorful, though a tad bit salty. For dessert, the passion fruit tres leches is a must have and definitely shareable. The chocolate cake was molten with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. Quite decadent. Our server, Chris, was attentive and personable, forthcoming with his favorite recommendations. The crowd seemed to be having a great time on Taco Tuesday with a live musician at prefect levels to allow for conversation. We're already planning an office outing for a great lunch. We were greeted immediately (like, they came out to open the door for us?!), seated right away, very friendly staff, loved our server (Shona), even the busser (PJ?) was so sweet and helpful with what we needed. we had a small problem about the AC vent dripping (guessing it's a new system since it's recently renovated), and they literally bought us two drinks and dessert as an apology. Lots of potential. They just opened a few weeks ago but details are missed. The spicy jalapeño margaritas are not spicy (despite the warning). Our first round they literally forgot the jalapeños. When added, it added a nice flavor but absolutely no spice. Speaking of no spice, the puréed house salsa is beyond bland. They have other salsas (for $3 each) that are much better. The salsa roja is the best. The Diablo is spicy. Guac is fresh but yes, bland. You can stir in Fresno chilis to help. The highlight were the entrees. Mocajete was stunning. The homemade flour tortillas were perfect. Chile Relleno was amazing. Street tacos were a small portion. Maybe add a taco. Staff very friendly, but new and struggling with technology. I ordered yuca fries as a side which was supposed to come with a dipping sauce. It was forgotten until I reminded our second server. I thought my chimichanga was missing something as it was just placed on my plate with the queso. When I returned home, I looked up the menu and yes, they forgot the guac, sour cream and pico de gallo that was supposed to to accompany the entree. After about 20 minutes we got our table. For the two of us we ordered the corn and crab appetizer and the dish that comes in a clay pot with shrimp, steak, chicken, chorizo, peppers and onions. My wife was excited to try the snapper and they didn't have it. They brought my fajitas out five minutes before everybody else's food, but forgot all the toppings, so it just sat there getting cold while I waited. And the kitchen got another entrée wrong. We will say that the desserts were very good. We really wanted JAG to be awesome, as we live nearby, but it wasn't. For very average Mexican food, the prices were too high.
