I went to Jakes for Happy Hour after work. It seemed like a lively place across from the Crown Plaza Hotel. I thought there would be a younger, more vibrant crowd there, but I felt like I was at a Members Only convention or an AARP meeting. I didn't eat, but the drinks were good and the service was what I expected. I will give the food a shot when I go back to Billings and if it is worthwile, I will be sure to get back on Yelp and change my rating (good, bad, or indifferent). read more

Great venue. Great steaks, ambience. It is nice to know there is fine dining in Billings. They can even pour a greats Sapphire martini straight up with olives. Started with a Caesar salad (great) and a a rib eye once and New York steak another time. Love their steaks. Tender, flavorful. My friends enjoyed the experience as well, one having the salmon which she loved. Service was superb and I have no complaints at all about this restaurant and recommend. Had a 16oz ribeye and I have to say it was good. Good seasoning, cooked medium with pink in the middle to perfection. The spicy potato cake had some great flavor with a slight kick, very good as well. One slight drawback was the onion and mushrooms. Although I enjoy them on my steak, they went a little bit overboard with it and took a lot of flavor from the cut of meat. Will definitely come back very soon. read more

Ended up ordering the Fish Tacos and noted they were made with Cod. Chose one Grilled and one blackened. Both tasted great with the blackened taco taking 'first place'. No sides needed. A perfect restaurant for a nice evening out with the family! The food is superb, wait staff is kind and helpful.

We took the advice of the locals and walked up to Jake's Steak House after our flight out of Billings was delayed. We said we'd make lemons out of lemonade and Jake's helped out tremendously! Our kids had sliders, grilled cheese, and pasta Alfredo. My wife had a Montana Berry Salad while I chose the baseball sirloin. All our food was perfectly cooked and came rather quickly. My dinner salad with pears and grape nuts was a fresh take that we really enjoyed as well. Our server Amy did a great job of welcoming us in and met our needs all throughout the meal. read more

But they did have Buffalo Trace bourbon which I was beginning to think you could not get in Montana. And it was probably the best meal I had in Billings. My favorite lunch downtown - get the French Dip!! Seriously delicious and craveable!! They get busy but get you in and out as quick as you need. Dinner is exceptional with a solid steakhouse vibe. You can't go wrong with the steaks, and I had a delicious prime rib. Their potato cake side is very different and incredibly delicious! They even tried to serve us a bottle of wine that had turned and they were very professional about the entire situation. Great spot to just stop in for a drink or late night bite to eat too! Service is always good. Bar area is great for lunch, dining area wonderful for dinner, even the back dining area which is in their back bar. Intimate and quiet, perfect for a nice family meal. Ate here early on a Saturday with a 5pm reservation. We had two children with us under two and they sat us perfectly so that we had space. I found it to be very kid-friendly. Most of the table ordered a seafood option. The special was swordfish was excellent and prepared nicely. The blackened shrimp is wonderfully seasoned and cooked well. The salads are generous and have quality toppings. Their house wine selection is good. I ordered a house Chardonnay which was floral and bright. It was nice to have a good option on the low end. Everyone in our party was pleased with their meals and the accommodation of our children. We stayed for 2 hours and did not feel pressured or rushed to leave. read more

Passing through on our way home to California we were looking for a nice place to celebrate a college graduation. We found Jake's steakhouse and it did not disappoint. We had a party of 4 and the wait was going to be 1 hour but were offered seats in the bar area which was completely satisfying. You get to order off the same menu and house get the same great service as you would in the main dining area. We started with the mexican dip which was so tasty. You don't get that many chips but the dip was good enough to eat by the spoonful! For the main course you get your choice of side (French fries, baked potato, etc.) and starter (soup or salad) I got the salad and I have to rave about the salad dressing. They were out of this world. We couldn't choose so the waitress recommended their favorite combo which was the walnut bleu cheese mixed with the balsamic and I swear I could've drank it straight because it was so good. If we weren't on a road trip I would've purchased a quart to go of just the dressing. We got an order of chicken strips, 2 steaks, and a chicken with crab pasta dish. We cleaned all of our plates! The steak dish i had came with 3 honey bourbon glazed shrimp that were out of this world. My steak was perfectly cooked, pink in the middle, and extremely juicy. The service was phenomenal and our waitress really kept up with a busy bar area. if you are looking for a great steak dinner make sure you stop in and see what Jake's had to offer! read more

I was impressed! The beer selection was nice, not great as I would did expect more, but nice. Where this place shines is on its food & service. I will qualify that my experience was in the bar area, so I can only imagine that the main dining room experience is better. That being said, I was very impressed with the service in the bar. The servers actually tag team the patrons to make sure that you are never waiting on your server for anything. They just simply jump in and ask if you need anything, & jump right on it! I wasn't particularly hungry, so I asked for the baseball cut of steak, & it was cooked to perfection (medium). My Cesar salad had anchovies on it, by request, & it was yummy. The only blemish on the whole experience was that my potato was slightly over cooked, leaning towards dry. That being said, I am a fan of this place. read more

Bread and sides are decent, with the baked potato offering a plethora of options fresh served tableside, and the prime rib was amazing as already mentioned. Was it the very best I've had? No. But for the money, and heck even if cost was irrelevant, it would still be damned good. On a recent trip to Montana, we "dined" here on two occasions, once as a couple and the next evening as part of a party of five. The restaurant doesn't set up tables until the party arrives; I was told very snippily by one of the hostesses that a reservation reserves a table, but that does not mean that the table will be ready. The night we arrived as a couple, there was almost no one in the restaurant and still we had a ten minute wait. For the larger party, it was the same thing... with a longer wait. So they'd like customers to show up on time, but they do not feel obliged to be ready. I find that extraordinary, and not in a good way. Both evenings, the house salad contained slices of cucumber that had been prepared hours before and some really nasty slimy bits. At least the first evening, we were offered bread. Maybe they don't do that for larger parties. the pile of onion rings we ordered the second evening were breaded, not battered. The breading quite overwhelmed the pieces of onion inside. And, unfortunately, a fair number of the rings consisted of rounds of onion cut very close to the skin. My husband's baseball steak the first evening was superb. The shrimp I had were over-cooked to the point of rubbery. The London broil he had the second evening was at best average. My halibut was served sauced; the menu doesn't manage expectations very well. The asparagus, though well cooked, appeared to have been simply thrown on the plate. Several pieces were missing their tips. The tips weren't even set the same direction, a lack of attention to detail that I find stunning because it is so easy to get right. I'll make just a couple of comments about other menu items. The potato cake is made of a gluey substance that suggests potatoes out of the box. In fact, I've had better potatoes out of a box. The mud pie is served with a small, dense rosette of whipped cream (really, more like butter). the crab cakes have a lot of filler, apparently of the same stuff that goes into the potato cakes. The service the first night was by an affable fellow with two marks against his professionalism. He served most plates by saying, "Look what I found." He removed plates saying, "And I'll do the dishes for you." service the second evening was simple surly and incompetent. Someone else in the party paid the tip and offered the old fashioned amount of 15%. I didn't feel bad about that. And about that tab. I indicated clearly -- the waiter acknowledged seeing me with a nod -- that I wanted the tab. He responded by putting it squarely in the middle of the table. What's up with that? And what's up with me giving them two stars instead of one? My husband's steak was that good. We don't live in Montana, so we'll not be tempted to return in the near future. Come to think of it, regardless, we'd not be tempted to return. From before the start of the meal until its finish, this just isn't a very good place to have a meal. read more

Went there with a large group of co-workers, had high-hopes but I wasn't impressed. In Billings for a couple of days for business, and I probably don't have to illustrate that California isn't known for the steak dinners. I was craving some good steak. About 10 minutes after arriving, the waiter positioned himself between two of us to deliver some drinks... 2 beers & 2 stems of wine. He took the beers off his tray and didn't re-position the stems first... so... gravity.. works every time. The guy next to me was wearing the dark red stem, I was wearing the pink Zin or whatever it was. Hadn't changed out of my Joseph A. Bank office/travel pants either... Needless to say... I was pretty miffed for most of the meal. The whole glass straight onto the thigh & knee of the beige / khaki-colored pants. Waiter seemed new, odd for a $200+ table place, especially in a weak-economy like Billings.. note to management, stick to hiring the experienced / high-end wait-staff for that price. Salad came.. eh... probably "ok" for Montana, it would be a fail for California, but it tasted ok. Iceberg lettuce with some cheese & croutons or whatever with a $35.00 dinner seems really, really cheap (not in a good way). They have Blue King Crab from Alaska on the menu.. you would kind of expect something other than salad & veggies from Walmart. Nothing like you would expect for salad dressing options either for an expensive steakhouse... pretty basic stuff. Oil / vinegar, thousand island, maybe some french & ranch.. that's about it. Dinner... I had the prime rib (12 oz) and the garlic mashed potatoes. They did fairly ok here, it is advertised in the menu as their signature dish (the prime rib), but it's nowhere near the best I've had. If anyone remembers Hungry Hunter before they went under and their fantastic prime rib, this isn't Hungry Hunters. It was definitely good, but not great, you would probably be happier at Outback, actually. Desert... I had the cheesecake, which I'll give them props for. It was one of the best I've had. $5.95 for that, average, very good / large portion. So... 6 of us ordering $30+ meals, drinks, and desert, and we got a single 4 inch loaf of bread on the table? Really? Maybe it was to replace the icky croutons on the salad with. For dumping about 16 ounces of wine on myself and my buddy, the "most they could do would be 1 or 2 meals"... ok... we didn't even ask and the waiter just kind of offered that up out of the blue. Probably because anyone else would write-off the whole dinner and the guy already felt guilty or something. Ok, whatever, it's expensed anyway. Manager came over and asked if the club-soda was working, it kind of was, but by then I looked like I had been for a swim (8 ounces of wine and about 16 ounces of soda on my leg). He did offer up desert for everyone and comped the drinks... so that saved it from a one-star. Without the incident??? I would maybe give it a 2, at best, anyway. It wasn't stellar, by any stretch, and I thought it was way over priced. For 4 meals (out of 6) on the check, waived the drinks and the desert, it was still around $200 with tip. For mediocre... and a very dated / 80's motif, I'd say pass. Go to the place across the street, you will be much happier. read more

Billings, Montana... Maybe I my expectations are just too high. Maybe I had an unfortunate experience. Either way, don't think I'll come back here. I sat in the bar, but wasn't really drinking, maybe why they were ignoring me? Anyway, I ordered the filet minion med rare, baked potato, wedge salad. Easy enough... Or not. The wedge came out and was a wedge of iceberg with some red onions and tomato. Bacon? Apparently since that is made of pork, not beef, it is not served in Montana. Well, I got my steak, it was underdone, blood everywhere.... and the baked potato? It came with just Sour Cream. The size of the baked potato compared to the size of the Sour Cream container they gave me was ridiculous. It probably would cover about two bites of the baked potato. Anyways, I took my two bites of the potato, ate a couple bites of steak. I ordered the Oscar topping, which I frequently do. I searched for the crab... and I searched for the crab.... and I searched for the crab. I couldn't find ANY in the sauce. What a waste of $14 or whatever they charged. I looked for the bartender to complain. That doesn't sound like it would be a challenge, only the bartender was TOTALLY ignorning me. Now, granted I was pregnant, so I couldn't drink, but I still ordered a Salad, Filet with Oscar topping and that isn't cheap! I finally gave up on the whole thing and just paid. I should have just stuck to their free happy hour food. They serve free appetizers at Happy hour, but only if you get there on time. By the time I got there, there were about 3 wings left but hey, they were free. Do yourself a favor and SKIP this restaurant. Go to Juliano's instead. That place is 100X better. read more

Granted, the client was not the person directly paying me, but someone who was very cool, so it was all good. Jake's had a very nice decor to it. An urban cowboy flair complete with barb wire chic. It made me think that I was back in the big city and not in Big Sky Country. We did not eat dinner here, but only came for the drinks and people-watching. Plus, we ordered desserts to wash down our martinis. An apple crisp with butterscotch ice cream and creme brulee. Damn delicious! We stopped at Jakes after a day that started with being stranded on the roadside. Make no mistake, our experience at jakes was a fine way to balance the morning out. The food was good - steak for me and shark for my wife. I've had better steak elsewhere, but I've had much much worse and the service was top-notch. Giving two stars for the wait staff, because they were wonderful. The hosts were snotty and short with me. If you want people to come into your restaurant, you might put the friendly ones at the door. Kitchen, you have some work to do. Kitchen sent out the wrong item. Strike one. Food was cold, bland, and mediocre. They were doing a special at some point and I got talked into trying it because I know the pressure is on the waitstaff to move product, usually. I tried everyone's food at the table, and it was all okay, but not worth the price we were paying for it. Jake's exudes the notion of an upscale Americana dining experience, without the product to back it up. My steak was cold and overcooked, and the peppercorn sauce they added with the special I had was just disgusting. I love pepper, but there was absolutely nothing in that sauce to balance out the domineering taste of the pepper and the texture was like chewing on gravel. The vegetables were bland, over cooked, and under seasoned. Also cold. I can't believe anyone pays these outrageous prices for mediocre steakhouse fare, but, then, it is Billings. I no longer live there. The restaurant is in a really cool building and has a nice atmosphere, but it won't save their overpriced crap. If you want real food for a better price, go on over to Lilac. read more

I'll start with the bad first: 1. Husbands prime rib was overcooked. Asked for medium, came out medium well, almost well done. 2. Cherry mojito was very bland. Not good, especially for the price. 3. Seafood pasta was overpowered with the sauce. A whole lotta cheese sauce. 4. Seafood pasta came with ONE scallop. That was what I was looking forward to the most. 5. Lobster was overcooked, made it kinda rubbery. 6. Kept getting sand grits in my Seafood Pasta, I know that can't be helped sometimes though. Now the highlights/good about Jake's : 1. Strawberry Champagne Martini was delicious. 2. Potstickers were an interesting appetizer, very appetizing. 3. Although the cheese sauce overpowered the Seafood Pasta, it was a good sauce. 4. Interior was very warm, and sorta friendly. 5. Husband did like Prime Rib a lot, even though it was overcooked. Overall, if I go back I'll just get a steak. It was my bad for getting seafood at a steak house. If you aren't afraid to indulge, this will be good place to go. However, I don't really think the food quality fit the prices. In town on a family emergency and needed a night out. Living in WA I would never go to a place without a reservation but thought it MT I should be ok. The host asked if I had a reservation and seemed stunned that I did not. It took her a minute to compose herself but we got seated right away. I got the Prime Rib and it was fantastic. The loaded baked potato was a treat, they came to the table and prepared the potato for you. Great staff and fantastic food. read more

This steakhouse was a bit on the pricey side. The service was OK! Staff did their job as for service, nothing special otherwise. The menu was somewhat decent, again a bit pricey for what was actually served. Pan fried shrimp, uhhh, its probably better to get that at your local grocery store, breaded fried shrimp from sizzlers would be best to describe what i've received. Other than that, it was just an okay place. It is located across the hotel i've stayed at so that was a plus, especially during snow season. If you're really looking for something fancy to eat, i'd suggest maybe this place but theres also other restaurants around the corner. read more

First, the good...great vibe and very nice atmosphere. Loved the sweeping wooden staircase in the lobby. We were greeted fairly promptly and seated without reservation at 7:30p on a Friday night. The wine list was extensive but marginal in quality. The not so good..our server was very nice but a bit overwhelmed. Not unprofessional though. The attention to service was just not there. Plates were left on the table after finishing their contents. The staff didn't help clear for each other. Just not good overall dining room management. The table itself had nicks in it. The clam chowder was fresh, but it sat in a warmer and the base thickened. The crab/artichoke dip tasted fishy. The bread served with it was way too thick. The 6 oz filet was cooked to my request, but the meat was not that good. The baked potato had been sitting in a warmer for too long. It was done but had that odd texture of being baked but felt steamed too. I just wasn't impressed overall sadly after we dropped just over a Franklin to dine there. read more

Outstanding on every level... except bottled wine prices seem a tad high... Drink Beer! I've been dining here for decades & have had literally everything on the menu. The staff are great and the place is very well managed! Wife and I love the bar in the winter. Sit along the windows while it's snowing in the downtown atmosphere! Best of the best in my opinion, by category. Appetizers: Hot Dungeness Crab Salad: Halibut Caprese Steak: Peppered New York Seafood: Pan Fried Shrimp (my favorite item on the menu... and I don't generally order shrimp at any restaurant). Chicken: Chicken Christopher (2nd favorite!) Pasta: Chicken & Broccoli (3rd favorite... and enough food for like three meals... take it home and enjoy leftovers). This is one of the very few restaurants in Billings, MT where I've never had a bad experience. It's ALWAYS outstanding. We chose to have our Christmas parties here with a limited menu (that we get to choose the menu) and they serve 60 people every bit as well as they do a table of 4. It's downtown so parking sucks.
