Inviting little studio with attentive teachers and friendly yogis. The owner of the studio, Bristol, takes her job with passion and energy. My first class was an empty one on Valentine's Day evening. She welcomed me into her warm studio and remembered my name instantly, even though I was just visiting town for a week. Through ClassPass I've taken several Vinyasa classes, the hour and 15 minute format being my favorite. I felt that the 45-minute lunch Vinyasa was too short, ending just as I was getting warmed up. The instructors challenge you just the right amount and I appreciate that they correct posture regularly. I'm happy knowing that I chose the right studio for my short stay in PVD, and will consider coming again on my next visit. read more

What an excellent find while business traveling! How stoked was i being fortunate enough to attend a Jivamukti themed class. Live music, chanting i knew, a nice flow with a few longer holds made this a really GREAT class! Welcoming studio great vibe and Ditizi (instructor) was awesome. I will defiantly go back! This is a real 5 star review from me. I loved this studio and the Jivamukti class so much that I now have searched out more Jivamukti classes when offered. FWIW - I'm business trailer Yogi - i've been to many (20+) studios while traveling, I only leave review's for the best. This is the #1 find for me in the last year or so stoked! Jala Yoga and Art is a serene space that gently welcomes both the experienced and uninitiated yogini with open arms. It is truly a little slice of serenity on South Water St., in my beloved PVD! I attended a class for Yelp members, and although I'd never stepped foot in a yoga studio before, I was immediately at ease. The owner and instructor, Bristol, was warm and accomodating. She led our little group capably, providing ample encouragement and friendly adjustments along the way. We took part in a Jivamuhkti class, and although I definitely felt it the next day, it certainly was nothing I couldn't handle again! The studio is cool and airy, and features gorgeous tapestries. Bristol sells a small array of toiletries and adorable clothing...I left with loose limbs, a sense of calm, and the most adorable kitten sweatshirt. Whether you're thinking of trying your first class or just in need of a little centering in the midst of a busy day, Jala can help. From convenient class packs to affordable drop-in fees (they even offer student rates!), there's sure to be a class that fits your schedule. I highly recommend them, and will definitely be back. I discovered Jala shortly after moving to Providence about a year ago, and it's become like a second home to me. I adore everything about this place, from the kind, knowledgable instructors to the comfortable, clean practice space. I started with the Jivamukti classes taught by Bristol and Dutzi. I was already familiar with this style, so I came in with specific expectations, all of which were greatly exceeded. Before classes start, you're first greeted with a friendly smile--a real smile, the warm, genuine kind that a good friend would give, because they're actually happy to see you. Classes begin with a brief teaching, some light chanting and short meditation. Some students newer to yoga may find this a little intimidating, but Bristol and Dutzi are very thoughtful of everyone's experience level and will offer more explanation for the "why" and "what-does that-mean" questions you might wonder about. The practices themselves are creative and different with each class, and though you're challenged with some tough poses, you still leave with a sense that you achieved something. I started attending the Mysore-style Ashtanga classes in the mornings, and this has completely changed my practice for the better. Mysore Ashtanga can also be a little scary in the beginning, but the instructors make it really inviting and work at your pace. Bristol is incredibly patient with each student, answering every question fully and thoughtfully. Her assists are really helpful, and her suggestions are always given in an encouraging and gentle style. And she's the real deal--twice now I've randomly met other Ashtangis in Boston and NYC who know Bristol and speak highly of her. I'm very happy to have found Jala and to have met so many wonderful people there, both students and instructors. I highly recommend this studio! read more

I first met Bristol, the owner of Jala Yoga & Art, in Boston where she was teaching Jivamukti and Ashtanga classes. At the time Ashtanga was my favorite style of yoga - falling in love with her Ashtanga classes were what led me to give Jivamukti a try. Much to my delight, Jivamukti is strongly influenced by Ashtanga. Rather than following the strict sequences, the teachers blend the primary and second series to fit the level of the class, much like a vinyasa class, and also lead a short meditation and discussion of yogic philosophy thereby making it a more customized and interactive experience. I love how adaptable the classes are depending on your level/mood - you can always choose to challenge yourself further or take an easy day. Bristol is an Advanced certified Jivamukti teacher, also trained in prenatal yoga, is highly intelligent and has this infectious warm and loving personality that makes class extremely therapeutic. She is also an extremely dedicated practitioner and has a deep understanding of the asanas and theories - after meeting Bristol my practice has advanced noticeably! You'll also find lots of great goodies in her store made by artists, from beautiful yoga pants to the most delectable organic lotions. The space is warm and clean and very inviting. Also keep an eye out for Fiona's great classes - they are very rigorous and energetic and flow so well - I always feel amazing afterwards! Highly recommended! read more

Yoga with Bristol is not just yoga, it's yoga with a soul. You get in there in the morning and Bristol is here welcoming you and talking you through the session and making you forget that it was so hard in the first place to get out of your bed. She makes everything look sweet, even the vinyasas, even the navasanas, even the headstands... I have been practicing Astanga yoga with Bristol form almost 2 years. Mysore Astanga practice challenge you mentally and physically, but Bristol teaches you how to be patient and listen to your body. I have never reviewed anything on Yelp before, but my experience here was so good, I had to write a review. I recently moved to Providence and have been looking for a studio that felt like a good fit. I am pretty particular about yoga classes, so I wasn't sure how this would play out. As soon as I got in, the instructor introduced herself, and made me feel more than welcome. Class was spot on. We started with some meditation and chanting, warmed up with sun-salutations, and the rest of the class was a fun flow of sequences. Though I sometimes find myself counting down to the end of class, I never found myself doing that during this class. The instructor was phenomenal, she paid close attention to every student (it was a decently large class of all ages and levels) gave great assists, and even helped me to do headstand without me having to ask. My body was achy and stiff before class, and afterwards, I felt amazing. I am 100% looking forward to coming back soon. read more

Jala Yoga is a great studio. This is as purist a yoga studio as you will get in Rhode Island. Bristol is an exceptional instructor and challenges you to try new poses. Her knowledge of the Hindu traditions and her philosophical teachings at the beginning of each class are meaningful and helpful to engaging in a true yogi way of life. I can't say enough outstanding things about Bristol and her instruction. I've never seen a yoga instructor pay such attention and give such specific care to the needs of each student. It's amazing how she genuinely wants each student to improve and works tirelessly throughout class to be on top of what everyone in class needs at that point and really helps each student progress over time. I've probably taken class with over 100 different instructors over time and I can't think of any that I think are better. The space is beautiful with great energy. If you look super closely, you can find a few spots where the paint job is a little splotchy, but otherwise it's a perfect space for yoga. Would give more stars if I could! read more

I have been longing to come to this studio for a while and never had that opportunity until this morning. I was expecting to have more faster paced sweaty yoga though turned out to be the slowest yet refreshing class I have ever taken. (Vinyasa with Fanny) We all agreed this studio is so clean and lighting from the window makes it so open. The only thing wasn't so clear during the class was the way instructions were given. I could tell everyone was checking on each other if they got that instruction correct, or because she is so clam and relaxed we were all empty headed for a moment when the instruction was given - possible! Wish I could be one of those 'living in the present moment' type of student during yoga class. During the entire class, I kept on thinking about my meter parking situation. I had 10 min to spare when I got back to my car after the class, I mean, no time to really have a conversation, just taking off after the class! I highly recommend to find a different spot closer to the Wickendon or on Benefit without a meter parking with longer time slot if you are one of those like me who are way too early to show up for a yoga class and will need to register for the class when you get there. I will try other classes to see if I could meet with every instructors at this studio! I highly recommend this place. You will feel so much better after the class and feel so refreshed for the day! read more

This studio is in a convenient location with street parking. Went here on a Saturday afternoon for a class with Bristol. She was so sweet and welcoming and the place just makes you feel calm and relaxed. She made sure that everyone was comfortable and was able to do all of the moves or she would modify. There was a lot of twisting moves that felt great. She also used a tingling, cooling lotion on your back and shoulders with your permission that felt and smelled great. This yoga class felt so great and she was so encouraging throughout. Do not be nervous or intimidated coming here bc Bristol puts you at ease immediately. I have been to several yoga classes elsewhere but this one I enjoyed the most as it was unique and slightly challenging. read more

Jala is a lovely, serene space nestled on a busy and hip street in Providence. When you walk in the doors, the hustle and bustle of South Main St disappear and you're in a peaceful and welcoming environment. Bristol M is a wonderful teacher who exudes a playful yet soulful presence, bringing together he dialects of spirituality and vitality of yoga. The decor is simple and elegant, full of wonderful statues of gods/goddesses. You walk into the main class space with the altar looking back at you. There is another smaller room attached to the side where she has fresh filtered water and clean cups and her props stored. Women and men's bathrooms also in that area. For sale there are lovely organic creams and scents and Jala studio yoga wear (definitely going to buy the owl shirt next time I go!) I took one class here as part of a Yelp event and it was geared for all levels, but there is enough space in the flow for experienced yogis to challenge themselves and touch their edge - I've been practicing yoga for over 5 years, and boy did I feel the soreness the next day!! I grabbed a schedule, as I plan to drop in for a class the next time I'm in the area or am looking for a spiritual and physical work-out! If you love yoga or if you are new to the practice, Jala studio is a great place to be! read more

I love that they do 1.5 hour classes & include a little bit of time for meditation and relaxation instead of just sending you home after your last pose. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for. Am visiting Providence for the first time and I'm so happy I went to Bristol's Mysore this morning. The studio is lovely and welcoming and Bristol is, as well. She has a great way about her as far as adjustments and explanations to help further your practice. I also felt the drop in rate of $15 was fair. I was also impressed with the customer service. I left a VM at Jala the day before I went to the studio. My VM wasn't picking up when Bristol tried to call me back so she sent a short but informative text, answering all of my questions. Thank you! Although Ashtanga-style yoga is the main focus for this excellent little studio, they offer other great classes too. I'm so happy that Jala is here to provide us with a perfect place to practice Ashtanga yoga. Ashtanga at Jala is like getting a private lesson for the price of a regular yoga class. Bristol is an excellent teacher and the environment is perfect. If you are new to Ashtanga yoga, try the Saturday afternoon class for an easy introduction. If you prefer a led primary series class, Friday mornings are great. My favorite is Mysore-style practice, Monday-Thursday mornings from 6am - 9am. This style of yoga may be different from what you are used to at other studios. First: you don't follow along as a teacher calls out the next pose. Instead, there is a set series of poses that you do every class. You start with a smaller set of poses and add more over the weeks as you are ready for them. You can arrive at a time that is most convenient for you, and you go at your own pace. This means that the students are all at different points in the series. Bristol visits with each student to help you through the parts of the series that may be the most difficult for you, and she helps you go a little further than you thought you could go before. The studio is convenient to the East Side of Providence and Downtown, and not far from the West Side. The studio has a nice view of the Providence river - a relaxing view for practicing yoga. Also, there's no music during Ashtanga class. Yoga classes with music really bug me. read more

I have been practicing with Bristol and Dutzi at Jala for almost two years now, and it's been the best yoga community experience I've ever had. I practice both Ashtanga and Jivamukti with them, and I am always impressed by the special attention they give to every single student and her or his needs. All the teachers at Jala tailor their classes to the group of students they have in front of them, being mindful of where every one is both physically (if you have injuries, etc) and spiritually/mentally. At Jala you don't only learn asanas (the postures), but you also gain a much broader understanding and experience of yoga philosophy in all its components, both in class and through the many special workshops organized throughout the year, and you come to really be part of a community of people who are committed to change the way the relate to themselves, others, and the world.
