You know we've been in the neighborhood for four years and hadn't tried this spot out. The verdict for us was that it made for a nice family dinner where everyone found something they liked. It's been around for a while, and almost has a small-town charm to it. The portions are plentiful, and nothing is super spicy as it's more of a crowd-pleaser, Tex-Mex kind of spot. That being said, we had: - Chips and salsa; salsa doesn't have a lot of kick but is flavorful. Chips are dry and saltless. -Guac for the table; this was very good and we all chowed down. -Chicken fajitas split between my wife and I; really good! Nice veggies, good quality chicken, flavorful and lots of food. -Sides of beans for the girls; my youngest enjoyed the chips and her black beans, my oldest tore through her refried beans, and made little tacos with the black beans and cheese. She also got a cheesy bean burrito off the kids menu where they forgot the beans, but she ate some of it. -Skinny margs for the grownups. Again in a nostalgic sort of way, we enjoyed being at a place where there are lots of other families, tons of chips ground up into the carpet as the dinner rush was fully underway, and they call out table numbers when they seat folks over a little microphone. I don't get it. People LOVE this spot. The food is mediocre, if you're looking for real Mexican. The service is friendly, but normally very slow. The place isn't very clean. If you order to-go, it's always wrong. And yet, lots of people recommend this restaurant. Maybe i've just gone on really bad nights (like 6 times). read more

I got this on a whim as a pickup order for lunch one day and was not disappointed! The Chicken Queso Salad was so good that I wanted more as soon as it was done. The lettuce was super fresh with great flavors from the peppers, tomatoes and cheese. Plus the shredded chicken was cooked perfectly. A little bit of the salsa mixed in added the perfect amount of heat and flavor to the mix. I also got some chips on the side which were good but could've been salted more in my opinion. Otherwise, the salad was the star of the show and definitely warranted a trip in person to get the full experience. I love Jalapenos and normally have nothing but positive things to say. Today, was different. My waitress walked away from my table just as I was about to place my order. When I ultimately placed it, I asked for my burrito with jalapeno dip. She told me there was an $4 charge to add that to the lunch special. I was fine with that. The problem? They made it the regular way and that burrito they brought me wasn't good at all. Couple that with a soggy crunchy taco I asked them to add and today was an off game for Jalapenos. Been to Jalapenos for dinner several times as I live in the area. It's definitely got a family vibe. The food is good but not excellent. It's also expensive for what it is. However, sit down restaurants are just expensive everywhere nowadays. The chips and salsa are a highlight for the kids. The service was generally good. They can get busy but our drinks are rarely empty and the chips and salsa just keep coming. So I would recommend for a family friendly, low key dinner spot. read more

We've been coming here for 25+ years-it's a family fave historically. I love the actualwait staff, but the hostessing is terrible on a busy evening-quoted 20 min waits can be an hour or more. It just seems like it's always on a struggle bus to function. Stopped in on Saturday evening to pack house. We were able to get two chairs at the bar and the service was fantastic. Ordering our margaritas. The bartender asked if we wanted a house or a different brand of tequila which he was able to discuss detail. As we sat and drink, enjoyed our chips and salsa. The chips are a little thicker than what I'm accustomed to, but they're perfect for digging guacamole. I had an à la cart tostada and my date had à la cart chile relleno. I have been a regular customer for probably 30 years, been there dozens of times. I have recommended Jalapenos over and over again. Yesterday just was awful. Food was just okay, delivered cold. Chips cold. The blond waitress who has been there for years was cold and short tempered, complaining she was the only one serving and obviously couldn't spare a moment. Finally brought extra napkins for the messy wings, threw them down on our table, but by then, wings were cold. Asked for water refill, she poured the refill then managed to drip across the entire table. Honestly, I don't think I have ever left a negative review. Love this place! If you're just looking for some good Tex Mex, this is the spot. Great menu with plenty to choose from for all diets. They can also accommodate large parties which is helpful! We like this place and eat here regularly. Last night I ordered the Chicken Verde burrito like I always do. Funny thing is that there was not one piece of chicken in the burrito. Jalapeños is great. They have so many good options that will satisfy anyone. I always start with a house margarita, rocks, salt. Simple, straightforward. It's just a tasty classic that pairs with the chips and salsa. You can get a jug to well sit keep that in your back pocket. Jalapeño dip is a must. Another classic that also goes by margarita dip/espinaca dip at other places but a consistent, solid pre dinner app. Monday's is bogo taco night and it's definitely worth it. I got the ground beef tacos. They're very similar to margaritas. These are stuffed with lots of meat and cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato. I also like the chicken flautas. Again, lots of meat and they come with a side of guac and sour cream. My other favorite is the pork tamales. They come with rice and beans and I always have leftovers. read more

The food was good. It was the run of the mill Mexican food for the KC area. I would recommend nachos with fries instead of chips. However, nothing special. Food: I'm sad to say that this was a regular non special Mexican restaurant. Chips and salsa arrive at the table once you are seated. Chips were warm so that's a plus, but the salsa was plain. My margarita did not taste like a normal marg ..: it gave me more of a daiquiri vibe. I sent it back. For my meal I had the fajita burrito with steak. The amount of meat in the burrito was small, like half of the burrito only had two pieces of meat. It did not come with any sides or anything also. Service: The waitress was very attentive. She kept the chips, salsa, and water filled at ALL times. We never had to ask. Environment: The inside isn't updated at all. Everything looks old, and decorations are minimum. This review is for the Overland Park location on 6/15/24 My family and I have eaten at this location for many years and for the past 2 times we've had badly made food, tonight was the worst..I ordered a Cheese enchilada dinner with rice and black beans and the enchilada had absolutely no taste what so ever and seemed undercooked, how does that happen? I even had my wife taste em and she was discussted. No only were the enchiladas made bad, the tortilla chips were horrible, it looked like all they did was dump the whole bag of uncut corn tortillas in oil and dump them in a bag, we got the whole tortilla and not smaller sized chips. I came home to visit fam and this place is just the same as all the times before when I went growing up. My fam went around 3pm which was perfect because there were not many people there and they even were nice enough to give us the option to sit in a booth in the closed off section since there were 5 of us in our party. I came to Jalapeños with my friend for lunch, and we sat at the bar. It was clean and spacious. The bartender got us water, a basket of chips, and two bowls of salsa. We both ordered a frozen margarita as well. They had a decent selection of lunch items. Both of us got the chicken taco with meat enchiladas (50 cents extra). The chicken meat was really dry and the taco shell fell apart when we picked it up, so we ended up having to eat it with a fork. The enchilada was better, as it was smothered in delicious cheese sauce! The dish came with rice and beans as well. The food quality does not match the quality of service or the price you pay. I went to Jalapeños with two friends, and they would only give us two salsas, even after we asked for more. The waitress spent more time trying to upsell our table than being helpful. Also the waitress would refill our waters by reaching over our food while we were eating and soak our food in water spillage. Overall, their food was not great. I had a mucho chimichanga, and it was NOT worth 17 dollars. The rice was extremely dry, and my chimichanga tasted weird. The restaurant also took at least 5 minutes of us waiting at the front to seat us when they were not busy. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice but not worth your dollar.
