I wish they would have put just another one or two pieces in there because I felt like they didn't put enough in the dish. All platters came with peas and rice and cabbage. So when I came in there, there was a lady on the phone. When the owner was around, a vaguely Middle-Eastern fellow, the place ran like clockwork and the food - which is undeniably good (not great, but definitely good) - was served quickly, politely and with respectable portions. I was told by the increasingly surly Jamaican woman behind the counter that ackee is served with saltfish ONLY for breakfast. I was told breakfast is served ONLY before 10 and ONLY while supplies last. I was told they open no later than 7. When I came at 8, they were closed. When I came the next day at 8:30, they were closed. I called in my order for escovitch (a type of fish) an hour in advance as I know it takes time to prepare. Even though this may appear little more than a steam table cheapie place, please bear in mind that escovitch is about $25, so I knew I this would take time. An hour later I arrived at the restaurant to be told that they had "forgotten" to cook it - it was busy and they just forgot. I waited. And waited. An hour and half LATER (that's 2 1/2 hours after I placed the order for those of you keeping score at home) my fish was ready. A tall broad fellow from the kitchen with a hair net the dullest of stares patted my order (as one might pat a dog) and said that he can't believe he forgot. "I remember she told me to cook it, but I forgot." Fine, I thought. Escovitch in hand, I thought I would order another dish to make a full dinner for my wife and me. I ordered the oxtail dinner, but requested no rice. Long ago, when I ordered without rice, the owner made sure I got a few (meaning two or three) extra pieces of oxtail. This time, no salad, no beans, just sauce and oxtail in a cup. It wasn't until I got home that I realized I paid $13 for 5 pieces of oxtail and a cup full of drippin's (read as: rendered fat and dark particulate matter). BUT WAIT! While I was waiting for the cup of melted fat and 5 lonely pieces of oxtail, another customer came in and was offered - didn't ask for it, but WAS OFFERED - ackee and saltfish... at 5PM. A friend of mines introduced me to this place during the summer. The food is very good and they pack the platter. I usually get the curry chicken over rice with cabbage. It's so much food that I have some for the next day. I love the Jamaican brand of juices they have there. It's fresh fruit punch that tastes like Someone just blended Made in an island. I bought a whole jerk chicken once and it seemed overly price and I thought ok.. small business.. specialty food..I'll do it this time. Come to find out from one of their regulars I paid nearly doubled per the price of a whole chicken..cool maybe they were having a bad day. On a more recent visit came in and asked for an item on the lunch menu. The price is on the wall, clear as day..the only difference is I opted out of the rice and it was also noted that it was $2 more to substitute the rice for vegetables. Ok no problem. I work in finance..I do basic math regularly..no problem.. this shouldn't be more than $7 ..$8 maybe with taxes (in fact $10 is fair for the sake COVID or recent inflation).. The lady behind the counter starts analyzing what would seem like a routine request as if I just asked her solve quantum physics.. "ok that's $14" she responds.. .. needless to say I walked out.
