I visited Jamaican Kitchen for the first time today after living in the area for four years and the customer service was excellent. I was greeted with genuine smiles as soon as I walked in , which is so rare these days. I ordered a Large Oxtail, a Small Curry Chicken, a 6 piece plantain, and a bottled drink. The total came to $52. The food itself had great flavor. The rice was perfectly cooked, the cabbage was good, and the oxtail came with seven pieces. I do want to add that some of the pieces were the size of a grape. The chicken was a bit salty and tough in some spots, but it definitely did not lack flavor. My only real issue was the price point matching the portion size. Oxtail is expensive everywhere, but for $52, I just did not feel like it was enough food for the money. Overall, I definitely enjoyed the flavors and the amazing hospitality for my first visit. It is a solid spot, I just wish the portions were slightly more generous for the price. read more

Food is awesome. Love a great patty. Their food offerings are worth the following: Service, another thing to be desired. Multiple times have had them not have the called in order ready, nor did they care. No charisma whatsoever. I tried to be polite but no response. Whatever. Very unprofessional experience. I ordered online over an hour in advance, but when I arrived, they couldn't even find my order. I waited about 30 minutes in the restaurant while they continued making other customers' food. I ordered curry chicken with rice, peas, and sides. After waiting all that time, they finally started my plate and then told me they had run out of curry chicken. Meanwhile, I watched someone who had just walked in receive curry chicken. So my food was either given to someone else or my order was never properly handled. The manager let me choose jerk wings instead and said my refund would be processed and take up to 3 days. It's now been 3 days and I still haven't received my refund. It says they processed and took my money. They also forgot my rice and cabbage, so I had to go back inside to get it. I understand mistakes happen, but the lack of organization, communication, and customer service was extremely disappointing. I really wanted to like this spot but the food did not deliver the way I hoped. The jerk pork was decent and tender enough with a little kick, but that is where the flavor stopped. My curry chicken, cabbage, and rice and beans dinner was completely flavorless. No seasoning, no richness, no island warmth, just bland. I am all for supporting small businesses, especially Caribbean spots, but the quality and taste have to match the price. This felt like a miss. I'd say 2.5 stars instead of 3 based on the experience. We stopped in for a beef patty and coco bread on the run. There were only 2 customers before us, one at drive thru who was served pretty quickly and one lady who was there waiting when we arrived and who looked a bit annoyed. We ordered 2 patties with coco bread and cheese and one snapple. The price was $17 and some change. So you'd think we were just going to be handed a patty and leave because we could see the patties...but we actually took a seat and waited 15-20 minutes. The staff was nice and apologized for the long wait but seemed overwhelmed by the order before us. They must have not had all of the food prepared yet because you could just see scrambling and tension. When we finally saw that customer receive her order it wasn't a big order at all. The patty was very tasty, the coco bread really wasn't. For almost $18 and such a long wait to be handed a beef patty, I don't think I'd be in a hurry to return. First of all, I was greeted with a hearty "Hello Brother" by the cheerful counterman, and by the time I left with my takeout order ten minutes later, he must have called me brother ten times. The last one, was a "Goodbye Brother" and it was accompanied with a double hands on the heart bow from the waist!!! That was pretty awesome. I wanted to start with a spicy beef patty, but he had just popped a fresh batch into the oven and I didn't want to wait 20 minutes, so I went with a spicy beef and cheese patty ($3.59). It was very good, had a generous amount of filling that was very tasty and yes... very spicy. I also went with a small order of jerk pork with vegetables and rice and peas for $10. Now this is one of my go to dishes, and I LOVED it. More times than I can remember, jerk pork contains a fair amount of inedible fat and gristle. Not here -the pork was meticulously trimmed so every cubic inch of it was perfectly edible. Seriously, there was zero waste. And what good is that jerk pork without a good portion of rice and a yummy zippy jerk sauce over everything? Well, let me tell ya Brother, the rice and sauce were terrific and combined with the trimmed meat and shredded cabbage for a fantastic $10 dish. The Jamaican Kitchen is next door to a burrito joint which is next door to a Pho joint in a strip mall, all pretty much across the street from Bradley Airport. OK, this is my new favorite Jamaican place! We picked up yesterday and did a picnic at Northwest Park (also new to us). Our choices - ackee and saltfish (listed under breakfast but available for lunch) with a side of plantains, curried goat, curried chickpeas, meat pie and a gizzada (small pastry off the shelf). We also picked up a johnny cake mix from the small selection of other items on the shelf - and very nearly got a tempting looking rum cake. The Jamaican rock cake looked good too and may be a choice next time. Most dishes come in small, medium or large options with appropriate pricing. For two of us we got two small and one medium plus a meat pie and had a ton of leftovers! This is probably too much for two people but there were a lot of things we wanted to try. The big winner was the curried goat. Super tasty with a wonderful texture. As is pretty normal for this kind of dish, there are bones. Just be aware of this if the dish is new to you. I am told the ackee and saltfish was also another "get again" though I didn't try it myself. Great plantains cooked just right. The chickpea dish wasn't quite to our taste but that was more a personal seasoning preference - the curry style on the goat was more rich and flavorful for us. I like that they do use quite different seasonings on various curries though. I noticed there are picnic tables outside which is nice to have as an option, but Northwest Park was a great find for us too and provided wonderful shade in which to enjoy our lunch. read more

I went to check out the Jamaican Kitchen on its second day open. As soon as you walk in, the incredible smell of Jamaican food hits you. I tried the curry chicken and beef patties (spicy and mild). The chicken was mild but flavorful. The meat was so tender it was falling apart. That entree came with rice and beans, with cabbage. The beef patties were both terrific - I'd recommend the spicy. Rice was not starchy or sticky it was very flaky and delicious they also have tropical rhythms beverages which gives you the feel of the island. We have ordered from here a few times and I couldn't decide whether to give the place a 3 or 4. The service has always been very friendly and quick. If you want take out you have to order in advance online. They don't take phone orders anymore. The food is hard to generalize. We have enjoyed some dishes but not all. My husband often gets the oxtail meal which he says is decent but not amazing. I usually get the stew chicken or curry chicken meal which are good. I've had the jerk chicken meal but don't like the sauce that they put over it. It's the same chicken/sauce combo in the jerk chicken sandwich so I did not enjoy the sandwich at all. The beef and chicken patties are pretty good and I always pick up one or two. They have a selection of drinks, sorrel and during the holidays you can even order a rum cake in advance! So overall I think it depends what you get here. After eating here a few times we continue to come for the dishes we have consistently enjoyed. read more

Best ever!!! After a long flight and checking into our hotel room we went searching for dinner. We ended up here and left with 2 huge meals of Jamaican chicken rice and cabbage and a curry chicken dish both were incredible and enough food to feed a family of five. I was initially excited when they came to town. The food is pretty good and we started getting it every week. The past two weeks I had some trouble, however. Last week, they put our sweet plantains in a bag that leaked all over the place. By time I got home, there was oil all over the outside of the bag. and the other containers within the bag. It was a real mess. This week, things got much worse. The kid behind the counter was wearing his mask below his chin. I didn't say anything, but was already troubled as he was serving my food.
