One of my favorite restaurants in the Vancouver BC area. I am from Oregon, USA and come to Vancouver a few times per year. I eat here every-time. The menu is unique and the food is delicious. Garlic Naan 5/5 - Those were really really good. It was thinner than other naans. Safari Platter (Jungle ribs, Mishkaki, Kuku Choma, Garlic Naan, Salad, Raita, with a choice of Masala Fries or Potatoes) $20 2.5/5 - Our server told the platter is enough for 2 but it wasn't. Jungle ribs were hot. The salad was just regular English salad. We were expecting some kind of speciality salad. I think the crispy fries were better than the potatoes covered up in curry powder. This place is one of the best for Indian food in Vancouver. It's an African/Indian mix, It's authentic and it's affordable. I'm a huge fan as some of my heritage are Indian and from this part in Africa where this type of food originated. The atmosphere isn't very appealing though but it's small and local. Cups of chai, chicken tikka and butter chicken are so good. Be specific with the butter chicken as I like mine spicy so you'll need to let them know. This place has a little tv always playing Indian movies which is pretty awsome too. All in all local place with some legit Indian food. read more

Here is another one of those restaurants that you stumble upon and just cannot understand why it took this long to visit this amazingly wonderful restaurant that bursts with flavours. Chicken Biryani, Prawn Masala, Kadai Gosht, Naan, and Masala Fries. Everything else is also awesome, but you cant go wrong with this order. This place serves food quickly, in large portions, and you leave with a happy wallet, happy belly, and a happy next day belly with all the leftovers. I am really surprised at some of the negative reviews of this restaurant. It was our first time and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We chose three main dishes to share:- Lamb Lollipop, Masai Ribs and Lamb Curry. The ribs and curry were excellent, tasty and very soft. Unfortunately that was not the case with the Lamb Lollipop-the lamb chops were very dry and overcooked. My partner started her meal with a Mango Lassi which was delicious and I ended my meal with a delicious Masala Chai and a Paan which in itself is a great experience. Absolutely rubbish! Just ordered 3 meals for delivery, they arrive stone cold, tiny portions and I paid 50 buck for it!! Not happy.

I wasn't sure what to expect because the reviews were so mixed. But I had a bad cold and was in the mood for spicy food, so I phoned for delivery. The restaurant itself doesn't deliver, they use a 3rd party delivery service called Skip The Dishes. So I ordered online, and I'd forgotten to specify one of the (free) side dishes, so the restaurant phoned me to confirm - which I appreciated! I had the Masala prawns and the African chili chicken and they were both SO GOOD! Absolutely bursting with flavour. The prawn dish had potatoes in it too, and they were so delicious I'll order a side of masala potatoes next time too. I can't comment on the service in the restaurant because I wasn't there (but the person on the phone was very friendly and helpful). I will definitely order from here again! read more

The food was alright. The Naan bread was actually very good. The meat on the other hand was quite dry. Service was almost non-existent though. The servers didn't seem to be enjoying their job and it clearly showed with their lacklustre attitude and service. It also took a while to get noticed at the door and when we did get seated, there was quite a lot of confusion that we could see going around the restaurant and kitchen area. Their curries are always fresh with lots of spices. Atmosphere has improved since their renovations and usually quite packed on weekends and evenings. I've been going here for several years and find that their food has a lot more taste and species than other Indian places that tend to have more yogurt. The owner loves to come around and great you which adds a special touch. Service is variable, usually very friendly and fast but lately the new group of staff is rather forgetful as I had to ask for extra sauce or chai at least three times before I received it. I highly recommend their chicken curry which comes with rice or naan for $14 or their kadai gosh beef curry for $15. They also serve African dishes like mishkaki. They also have Thali Thursday all you can eat, which serves unlimited lassi, several meat and vegetarian curries and also varying choices of dessert. Comes with unlimited rice and naan and roti and puri. I highly recommend this over buffets as the staff comes around with the food rather than have it sit in a warmer like most Indian buffets. So you always get fresh soft naan unlike those bark like naan at buffets that has been sitting there for hours. I think it's totally worth the $15.95. They told me it wasn't available anymore in July, but I saw it back on their menu so hopefully they brought it back. I've brought friends who have never had Indian food and they loved it, so great place to introduce your friends to yummy curries! read more

I recently had dinner at Jambo Grill. I ordered Lollipop Chicken and Beef Kabobs. The Beef kabobs were ok but kind of dry. The lollipop chicken was ridicolous to say the least. It was served in A BOWL OF SOUP. I have never ever seen lollipop chickens served like that :0 Plus lollipop chicken are usually made from chicken drumsticks and this dish was made from dry, skinny chicken wing drummetss :0 Shocking... The food has a ver homemade feel to it...it is not spicy or tasty at all...Everything has small portions..the Chicken lollipop came with small 1/2 a naan bread which was made into small bite size pieces...Like come on?? It was not even enough for 1 person! The service was PATHETIC to say the least.... The waitress was very disinterested and didn't even seem to notice we were there... She was cold, uncaring and very rudely shooed us off when we requested for roti instead of naan in the chicken lollipop dish...And PLUS we were waiting for 20mins+ after we finished our food for the bill..And IT STILL did not come...so then I finally got up to pay at the front... I came here for your Thursday Daily Special. It's Thursday and you're telling me that it's only the 1st Thursday of the Month? Then that should be a Monthly Special. Arrgh. My friends had previously come here for dinner and knowing my love of cassava fries told me to come here. We enter, with a sign by the door that says there is all you can eat Thali on Thurdays. Done. No, not done, because even though the menu says it, the meek little waitress who has nothing to do with the fact that they've stopped All You Can Eat Thursdays says we can't have it. But your menu says it? Nope, still no. Hmm, maybe I'm asking wrong... my next friend comes to join us and she asks the waitress to explain the AYCE Thursday deal. She says there isn't one, and that it's just one Thursday a month. My friend tries to offer her a pen to cross it off their menu. The waitress kind of nervously laughs. She must be tired of this... Other patrons keep coming in and asking about the deal and they all get the same answer. You should probably edit your website too before making the change. As of now, I heard they crossed it off their menus with sharpies. Their website is down, so maybe they're changing it now. My hubby and I order the grill combo. It has an assortment of different meats (skewers and tandoori chicken) and different sides (mogo fries, fries and salad). It's a great item to share and taste a little bit of each thing they have to offer. It came with the cassava fries, so that's a win. The food is really flavourful, but I still can't get over the AYCE Thali. It's enough food, but do I feel satisfied? I would have ordered another serving of mogo, but my friends gave me their share. The food here is always incredibly well seasoned/spiced! My husband and I order from here often via one of the Vancouver delivery websites. One thing to note, their paratha is a lot different than the ones we've had at most Indian/South Indian restaurants. Came here for a birthday and this place delivered. Their menu is well designed and it's easy to order. Decent alcohol menu but my friend was unable to get actual pints of beer. Make sure you have photo ID as they check everyone. We order the appy platter and it did not disappoint. Well I have been going here for quite some years and have loved their food. Today after 2 years I decided to go there for a birthday brunch with my family. I had reserved a table for 12 but when I got there I was greeted very poorly with a table that wasn't ready. Once seated the restaurant started filling quickly and the staff were very overwhelmed as they clearly didn't have enough man power. It took over 45 minutes just to get drinks, 1.5 hrs to get appies and after 2 hours they decided to take an entrée order. A total of 3.5 hours to have a brunch. To top it off found hair in two dishes and I brought this up with the owner (nash) who didn't care and didn't even apologize. His way of sorry was 20% off that particular dish. Lol. What a joke this place is and their food quality has really dropped while prices keep going up. Absolutely atrocious place. read more

Simple decor, friendly staff decent food. Walked in on a Friday. Place was really busy. Took a couple minutes for host to greet us and seat us. Once seated, while waitstaff did engage right away, food service was slow. Orders were mistakenly brought to our table, orders were incorrect and asking to fix just seemed stressful. Food was decent, not great. Ribs were over priced for the portion we got. Some appetizers were greasy, meat overdone and service and food handling skills are definitely lacking. Some training is necessary. Need to start using more fresh foods. Great bunch of people run this place and from seeing how busy they were, clearly they do a good job. I think this place has the potential to be the go-to African-Indian restaurant in this city, just need to work on a few changes. read more

Went to Jambo Grill yesterday for the first time. I was born in Kenya and I felt like I was sitting back in a cafe in Nairobi with local Kenyans around me. Awesome ambience and decor. Food was amazing and generous portions we had to doggy bag everything. Ordered the bhel puri, hava mogo and nataka tilapia which all took our taste buds to another level. Been here maybe 10 or more times now. They've gotten food wrong once. That is a remarkably high hit ratio. The food is delicious, unique, and served with love. A few stand-out items: The kokou-poussin (cornish hen) is spectacular as are the Pili-Pili wings. These two dishes are some of the best chicken dishes I have ever had. The tamacho nachos are always good as are the curries and the thalis. The only item I would veer away from is the Masala Steak. It is awful. Over-cooked and not a very good cut of beef. Jambo Grill is an East African restaurant in the Collingwood area. This place is really cool and totally different. There curries and butter chicken are not indian style, they are Kenyan style..so they might not be what you are used to at indian restauarnts. Regardless, they are fantastic!! Soo much better than Samosa Garden (barf). The Chicken Tikka is amazing here and the Jungle ribs are to die for. The chai is a little pricey, but you get endless refills so I guess it makes sense. SERVICE: the service is usually friendly, however, there are friday/saturday nights when the staff are a little frazzled due to understaffing, but they seem like they do try as best they can with such a large number of clients. OWNERS: owned by a married couple, both relatively friendly. However, they should consider making portions a little bigger or prices a little cheaper. Also, ive heard from others that they can be really rude to their staff at times, in front of customers.. AMBIANCE: really cool and interesting and really unique. This place has a genuine warm African feel to it. It is not your typical bland modern atmosphere. It really is a new experience. Overall, its a great place. I preordered the night before a big Sunday lunch gathering that I was attending. I spoke to a man named Mesh and ordered 3 dozen Samosas and he told me it would be $36 plus tax .He actually called me back 2 minutes later just to reconfirm the order for the next morning at 11:30am and I RECONFIRMED the price. When I arrived to pick up my order on Sunday the young women told me it would be $63 plus tax !!! I told him about my conversation with Mesh and she called him.I asked her to hand me the phone and when I spoke to him he said he couldn't remember the quote he gave me over the phone because he was doing two things at once.When I told him he gave me that price he said that 63 was the price and he wasn't budging and hung up on me ! Within 2 minutes he called back and spoke to the young women who was helping me and ACTUALLY ADMITTED he gave me the wrong price but said to her that 63 was the final price and that there will be no adjustment ! Came here for the all you can eat Thali on Thursdays. The place was packed, and not just with people looking to get stuffed full of delicious food. There was a table seated next to us of North African people who told us that they can't find this kind of food anywhere else. The food was delicious. 4 different vegetarian curries, three kinds of bread, appies, and 2 desserts. And unlike other all you can eat joints, it was non-stop table service. The servers would come around with pots full of curry or trays of everything else. Food was amazing but service was lacking. Lots of people had to wave down servers to get second helpings and our drinks took a long time. But the food was well worth the late. read more
