The oxtail were huge and jerk and delicious. (They ate too fast so no pics!) I was a bit more reserve when it came to my plate but I got the oxtail taco and nachos that are made with fries. I only ate the taco because I was so overwhelmed by the size of my plate (which is pictured)! Everybody enjoyed their food and I have plenty of leftovers. For context, I'm a size 16 and my husband is an XL. Yes, we're larger people, but not so large that we shouldn't be able to sit comfortably enough to put our linen napkins on our laps. As someone who has eaten tons of local Haitian food as well as Haitian-American and Haitian-Canadian interpretations of Haitian cuisine, I feel confident in my palate and in my ability to recognize well-executed Haitian food. This was not that. The food was subpar and, frankly, uninspired. I ordered the Joumou Gnocchi, and it was soulless. There was little to no jus (soup/juice), and the gnocchi (which were supposed to be made from squash) were essentially dense shards of dough. They lacked the lightness and tenderness I would expect from properly made gnocchi. There were bits of oxtail in the dish that were actually quite tasty, but they couldn't save the dish as a whole. And again, this was the meal that arrived 15-20 minutes after my husband's because of the kitchen mix-up. My husband ordered the chicken with sòs pwa and legim. They initially brought him griot by mistake. When the correct dish finally arrived, the pwa looked extremely watery, and the chicken looked as though it had been prepared a day or more before and reheated. It had that unmistakable refrigerated-and-reheated appearance and texture rather than looking freshly prepared. I really hate leaving negative reviews, especially when I want to support restaurants serving Afro-Caribbean cuisine. But I also have to be honest about my experience. For someone who isn't familiar with Haitian food, this might pass as a 3-star experience. For me, based on what I experienced that evening, it was closer to 1-2 stars. I was genuinely disappointed. * 1 star for the calm and friendly demeanor of the staff and because they tried. * 1 star for the tasty bits of oxtail and the delicious carrot lime juice.
