I am submitting this complaint to formally report unethical billing practices by the dental office…read moreassociated with a disputed dental charge of approximately $300. I want to be clear that the quality of clinical care itself is not the issue; my concerns relate solely to billing conduct, transparency, and the handling of insurance-related disputes. After receiving care, I submitted the claim to my dental insurance provider. The claim required escalation and is currently under active review by the insurer. This process was communicated clearly and in good faith, and I have documentation, including a claim number, demonstrating that the charge is under legitimate insurance review, not ignored or refused. Despite this: The office pursued payment while the insurance claim was unresolved asking for "just a small payment" while they wait. The matter was escalated to a third-party collector before insurance determination There appears to be no reasonable accommodation for standard insurance dispute timelines There was no transparent explanation of why the bill was deemed immediately collectible rather than pending insurance resolution Patients should not be pressured to pay balances that are actively under insurance review, particularly when the provider is aware that the insurer is evaluating coverage or reimbursement. This practice places patients in an unfair position--either paying out-of-pocket prematurely or being threatened with collections while complying with standard insurance procedures. Further, the billing escalation process appears to lack: Appropriate verification that insurance review was complete Ethical safeguards before referral to collections Clear written communication outlining patient rights during an insurance dispute While I respect the clinicians and the care I received, billing practices are part of patient care and ethical responsibility. Referring a patient to collections under these circumstances undermines trust and may violate professional and consumer standards. I am requesting that this matter be reviewed for: Compliance with ethical billing standards Appropriate handling of insurance-pending balances Policies regarding referral to collections Oversight of third-party billing or collection agents acting on the practice's behalf I am submitting this complaint in good faith to ensure accountability and to prevent similar experiences for other patients. edit: Owner responded - yes, this is for this business Lil Smile Dr. Toppi. I am also a healthcare provider and I know this is 100% unethical. They did send me to collections for $300 while my insurance was escalated. I did pay the $300 (minus paying the "interest fees" - another unethical practice!) while my insurance worked on it out of fear. It is sad way to treat patients and other people deserve to know about these unethical practices.

I went in to Dr. Surrillos to have my teeth and my daughters teeth straightened. After 2 years my teeth looked fantastic, yet I was told to keep coming to get the front aligned, turn, a tooth, a make room for my implant. I trusted them and did so. Then in the 2 nd year and after I had already paid them off before the 3 year, my bottom teeth began to noticeably shift higher and higher making them look completely side ways. Each time anything has happened, I had to tell them about it, otherwise they wouldn't do anything. As was the case with this. Years went by and they never addressed the issue. Eventually I asked them how much longer is this going to be it had already been 5 1/2 years and my bottom teeth were now completely misaligned. They all of a sudden changed everything around super fast and then ruined my top teeth by pulling them out and over the flared bottom teeth, flaring them and ruining how straight they had been. The canines also got pulled out of alignment and the midline also ended up being completely off center, there are spaces between my teeth that show black behind and get food stuck because the teeth are not aligned and lastly I don't have room for my implant and now I have to get braces again. He refunded my payment, however it is not enough to fix them now and does not begin to cover the 5 1/2 years I had to wear braces and the emotional damage I have experienced since they were removed. I was 34 when I got them and 39 when they were removed and you'd never think I had braces. I truly wish I would have never gone here. I would not recommend or go here ever again. Although they are all very nice, It is churn and burn and your kids wouldn't be able to speak out about it. My daughter's front teeth are not as aligned and her front tooth is already shifting back, with restrainer wear. Please review the photo attached. The bottom photos are what I now need to go to an orthodontist to fix. They are FLARED, misaligned and my bite is so off it hurts, I have gaps on the tops next to the gums and I can barley close my mouth over my teeth with out effort. DONT GO HERE.

They…read morescheduled us for a consultation, where they did X-rays, and told us she had a cavity that needed a silver cap. We came in for the procedure and he assured us that thankfully all her other teeth looked great, and after we discussed with the dr how to prevent a small cavity from turning into something this severe. He stated that a routine cleaning every 6 months could make the difference in catching something before it becomes this bad to need such a painful procedure. We then made an appointment for a cleaning in 6 months and asked if there was any follow up for this procedure and we were told no. On Monday my daughter complained about tooth pain on the opposite side of her mouth, and so I called to make an appointment. On the phone I was told she needed to schedule a first consultation and when I stated we had already been seen 6 weeks ago, the receptionist stated the first consultation we had was only to X-ray the tooth that was in pain. I then asked how the Dr could have told us all the other teeth looked great if they hadn't done X-rays on any other teeth, she left the phone and came back and said the Dr stated it was just a visual check and that cavities just pop up. Very concerned, and confused I asked why we were not told that our first consultation was not a first consultation and why we were never told to make that appointment. She stated they have a third party call center that makes appointments and it was a admin error. Concerned for my 4 year old I stated that because of this admin error we were told her other teeth were okay through what we assumed was an Xray, and not a "visual check" and that if we had known this 6 weeks ago we would have made the appropriate first consultation appointment immediately to prevent further pain and damage. She will now have to have a more extensive work done because of this error, and so I asked what we could have done differently and I was told to talk to the dentist about my concerns at the appointment. I then came in for my appointment today, and was told to sit and wait in the waiting room full of clients. A woman then came out and very publicly told me that because of the phone call the Dr would no longer comfortable treating my 4 year old. I asked her why I was not called ahead of time to cancel the appointment and she stated she did. I received no such call or message to either number on file, and was humiliated in front of my children and the entire office and waiting room. Another admin error? Needless to say I am very concerned for how this was handled and how they chose to deal with what THEY described as their admin error. She could have pulled me aside privately, or called and left a message to cancel but instead chose to humiliate me for what was described to me as an admin error. If you care about your kids read the other 1 star reviews and take your kids somewhere else for goodness sake. I was recommended here by a friend and after hearing about this they are also cancelling their appointments.

Their waiting room is terrible, zero toys, a few plastic chairs - it is not a good environment for children to start out when they are nervous for the dentist. I went recently with my 2.5 and decided it would be my last visit with them - During the exam I was told by one of the female dentists (who was very rushy and unfriendly) that my 2.5 year old son had 4 cavities total, two of which required pulpectomys and that he should be fully sedated for his fillings. I was extremely uncomfortable with putting my young kid to sleep so I decided to consult a different dental office. The other dentist was patient and kind, he looked throughly at my son's teeth. He informed me that he only has 2 cavities and that they could be taken care of easily (no pulpectomy needed). I asked him if he needed to be sedated and he said, "absolutely not." He said he would never want to sedate a young kid for only 2 cavities, when they can easily be done in the office with laughing gas. I honestly feel like the dentist here was just trying to make extra money off me. Why sedate my child and do a full pulpectomy when he didn't need it?!? Do you research before you come here because you may be paying way more for unnecessary treatments.
