Had a blow out on the thruway. The guy who came brought an old crookety jack that was broken. He could jack the car up until my boyfriend told him to try in another spot. He brought a little drill to get the lug nuts off and don't realize that there were caps on the lug nuts. Although I think we still may have been in the predicament we were in cuz some of the lug nuts were seized they may have had an easier time with the proper equipment. He was nice at least and was able to find us a spot that could do it and towed us there. read more

WISH I COULD GIVE MINUS 5 STARS! COMPLETE CROOKS, COMPLETELY GOUGED ME AND TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A SITUATION THAT COULDN'T BE AVOIDED AND I HAD NO SAY IN THE SITUATION. I had a medical EMERGENCY, it was so bad i had to pull the car over and call an ambulance. I literally pulled my car one exit before where their lot just minutes away, i'm pretty sure they just drove it by the looks of the inside everything was changed. Anyway, got charged 270 bucks for them to either drive my car or tow it so close to their lot. When i ask why so much for that such a short distance, they responded with, "everyone has to make money". HA! Yeah we all do, i worked 8 hours to make that amount of money, not 8 minutes to take advantage of someone who was sick and had to be taken to the hospital with no choice in the matter of whom was towing my car. State troopers called them i guess because they are a state authorized biz, they were there as i got in the ambulance. I made sure to call the troopers to get a report and to let them know what happened and they were sympathetic. They (Jan's) had a total attitude when i asked why so much and asked if they could work with me, and also hung up on me when i tried to call and dispute...now that i read all the reviews i totally get it!!!! One or two 1 star reviews can happen to anyone, but not this many...I hope people read the reviews if they're even going to consider hiring people who do business like this, but i'm sure not enough people do because it's usually some sort of emergency, so they're used to taking advantage of people. On March 25th, 2024, at approx. 11:30am I went to pick up my vehicle at the towing company. When getting my vehicle from Larry, the tow man, at the left side of the lot. I first noticed the wide empty area the lot was that day, but I didn't see my vehicle. Then I asked Larry if he knew where my vehicle was situated. Apparently, my vehicle was hidden behind by a huge white van. I asked Larry why this Van was pushed against my vehicle when there was an enormous space to place that van elsewhere. He said he would remove van from my vehicle, and apparently the van could have been driven but Larry said he could find the keys so he used the tow truck. Upon looking further I noticed that the van was so pushed up against my vehicle, and my vehicle's tires were dragged up with force, almost hitting another vehicle up front of mine, and all the pictures will show my evidence of this event. I went immediately to the office and complaint about this. I went outside of the office to wait for person in charge to resolve this matter of this un-necessarily damage to my vehicle. That's when same person Larry came out and looked at the damage, and said "how do you want to settle this?" I told him obviously my vehicle didn't have this specific damage in the rear of bumper. I told Larry that damage was not there originally, and we made a verbal gentlemen agreement. He asked how much money it would take to end this ordeal that was caused inside the lot and by him, which Larry went on to state he had been there 40 years at company working there. I asset the cost would be between $150- up to $300 at most by any repair shop. But we decided on $225.00 to end this discussion. Larry agreed and stated he would leave the money with desk to be given to me by tomorrow. Larry went inside the office, and that's when two other guys came out, and I tried to get their names, and possibly their position there at towing company, but no one was giving that information, like it was top secret. Anyhow this short man looked at the front of my vehicle and all other places before looking at where the damage I had pointed out from the beginning the rear bumper, which was the back area of the vehicle. This short guy spoke there, I imagine was the boss, because he said directly "take me to court," "take your car, it's a piece of shit," and then continued to say "go fuck yourself, "To state he wasn't going to pay would have been enough of decision to make or even say. But going further to insult my vehicle, and in front of my family was completely un-professional for a businessman to act, rude and vulgar. read more

I like bringing my vehicles to Jan's. Looks like most of the bad reviews are related to towing so I think most of the negative reactions are due to people being upset about their car breaking down and the pain in the ass that that is, but don't take it out on the tow company. It's probably not easy for them to get paid by the roadside companies either, and not cheap to operate a fleet of expensive tow trucks. Just because your car is stuck in snow doesn't mean they owe it to you to risk getting their truck stuck. It's hard to find auto repair shops that do a good job on the car. I've had bad experiences with other shops in the area not completing what you asked, things coming back worse then when you dropped it off. I have not had any issues with Jans, service and prices have been great. Tow drivers are all friendly and courteous. Not sure what all the negative reviews are about. Recommend this place. read more

One of Jan's tow trucks picked up our 22-year old's car in Sloatsburg in May after she had a flat tire. When the driver unhooked it in their yard, he slammed it into another parked car causing major damage to her driver's side front door. Jan's owners promised her they'd fix it, then made shoddy, superficial repairs, forcing her to drive the car for months with a misaligned door that wouldn't properly close. We eventually got estimates from local body shops (ranging from $3,900 - $4,800), but Jan's called the estimates a fraud and refused to pay, denying that they caused that much damage and saying "it was just a scratch." Poor kid just bought the car 3 months earlier in perfect condition. My wife and I got involved and we ended up having to file complaints and claims directly with their insurer and roadside assistance dispatcher, as well as the police and DMV. Jan's owners didn't cooperate with their own insurance company's investigation; they told different stories to us and the police about who did the initial repairs to our niece's car; and they refused to produce their own video surveillance tape of the accident. Luckily we kept good records and recorded many of our conversations with them, and their insurer found them liable and paid $6,900 for the proper repairs, which were finally completed two weeks ago. Based on the evidence we provided, their roadside assistance dispatcher also told us they would have paid if Jan's insurer hadn't. We are very grateful to both to them (Progressive and Agero). The body shop that did the final repairs told us that the repairs attempted by Jan's made everything look almost passable, but didn't address the underlying damage and it made the situation worse. This whole ordeal consumed nearly 4 months of our lives and was very stressful for our whole family. We do not recommend Jan's Med-A-Car! read more

It took reallllly long, but at this point we were happy to be alive after almost crashing on the highway. We waited about 2 hours for new tires because they were coming from another location. Towed us from the Thruway and made us sit in the car on the bed, due to COVID. I verified this was legal but only for short trips. Ours was 7.5 miles, which was over the legal distance limit. Price was reasonable for the tow, considering the Thruway rules give them a virtual monopoly in the area. Price was also reasonable for the diagnostic on the car. Since our car was kaput with a blown engine, we signed the title over to them to junk the vehicle. The MAJOR issue was that I asked if I could remove my snow tires from the car ($350 invested in them) and replace them with my other rims/tires with all season tires. I was told sure, so I drove 50+ miles from my home to do that work. When I got there, I was told that, because of insurance, I couldn't do the work myself. But that they would be happy to exchange them for $25 per tire. In other words, $100 for about 15 minutes worth of work for their mechanic, which is 4 times their labor rate per hour. Despite the fact that they were completely amenable to looking the other way over the towing rules. So, basically, after paying them for a tow and diagnostic AND signing the title over to them for free, thus allowing them to get whatever money they could for the car, they still had the gall to ask me for $100 for tires that I already owned. read more

Me and my fiancé broke down on our way home. We were in an unfamiliar area and it was late at night. At first they were very kind and they hooked up our car for a tow. They offered to bring us to a near by hotel for the night and we even gave the man who towed us 20$ for his kindness. The next few days passed until Monday when they said we had to wait till then to call as it was the weekend and they wouldn't have a chance to look at our car until then. We knew we were in need of a new alternator, and when we called them to discuss the fix they tried charging us an insane amount of money. They wanted to charge us for the three days it had been on their lot. 40$ for each day even though they were the ones who said they had to keep it until Monday, 115$ for the diagnostics, 300+$ for the parts and labor, and 130$ for the tow! (They charged us to take us to the hotel and then back to their shop!) changing an alternator takes 20 mins and the part is 30! So idk why they were trying to charge us over 300$?? Oh. No. I do no. Because I am a Young female and I look like I couldn't possibly know anything. We paid the tow and drove it the rest of the way home on the battery. Went to the junk yard the next day to buy an alternator and fixed it ourselves. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE. They will try whatever they can to get your money. They also broke our muffler while towing us and we didn't realize until a few days later.) ADDED AFTER THEIR RESPONSE: If you read my review at all in the first place you would see that I said you TRIED to charge us. Therefore you didn't charge us, because we didn't allow it. I was just explaining what you tried to do. The very next week we went and got our car fixed and bought that 30$ alternator we were taking about. So don't try and act like it's unheard of. To this day I would still never recommend this place based on the treatment we received. And you're saying that we should feel lucky you helped us bc we were "stranded" HA! That's a joke. We were parked in a 24 hour parking rest stop with plenty of UBERS available. So don't think you did us any favors when in actually you were just trying to make some big bucks from a seemingly dim young couple. Because that is exactly what you guys tried to do. Thankfully my husband and I actually know a few things about cars and didn't let you succeed. I wish I never would have called your company bc in the end it just costees us way more money then we needed. Unfortunately we did call though in hopes that y'all would have been decent people, however we were wrong. Do not recommend. They lied about ETA multiple times. Finally after 5 HOURS they cancelled the service so I ended up having to start all over with another company. One of their lies went as far as to tell me they were on the cross-street that my location was off of and saying they were just minutes away...an hour and a half later still nothing. Take the negative reviews seriously. These people are full excuses (phones were down/previous tows took longer than expected/sometime people end up having us go further than we originally thought/we are short staffed/it's a very busy day/GPS gave wrong directions/etc.) Bottom line - they do not meet the commitments they themselves make and they get caught in outright lies. read more

We dropped off a rental car carrier at Jan's and the guys there were tremendously helpful, patient, and competent. Jan's also is a Penske rental site, and we were near the end of our cross-country move from Arizona. We've never towed anything, and were nervous about (a) getting the truck-plus-carrier parked without needing too much maneuvering, (b) getting the car off the carrier, and (c) once the carrier was detached, getting the truck itself out of the tight space we'd pulled into. For all three problems, a very kind young employee assisted us, even taking a hammer to a chain wrapped under the car body that we couldn't remove ourselves, so that we got out of there pretty quickly, and with nerves intact. I would recommend this business to anyone that has staff like that young man, to whom we will be forever grateful. read more

Probably the slowest place you can go to and customer service is basically nonexistent. I have given them 3 chances and all I was getting done is a simple inspection, which was scheduled prior to coming in and still took about an hour. I have gotten inspections done in other shops within 10-15 minutes at the most. Whenever I try to ask how much longer, I'm faced with nothing but rudeness and useless excuses. Go at your own risk, this is just one persons honest opinion. My car got a blowout on the thruway last week. Both AAA and my auto insurance co told me they couldn't pick me up. We found Jan's Med A Car online since it was local to where we were stuck, so we called them. They came to pick us up right away with a tow truck and a very friendly driver. That was on a Saturday. Since they are closed on Sunday, we drove up on Monday to pick up our bug. But the lug nut had a lock on it. And we didn't have the key. So, they easily and happily got the old lug nut off with some braun and experience, and replaced it with a new one while we waited. They were so helpful and nice during this entire experience. I did read some bad reviews and was wary when we drove up. But the gentleman that helped me, RJ, could not be nicer, more accommodating and professional. He charged me a very fair price, and the cool mechanic that got the lug nut off said to us with a smile before we drove off, "Don't take this the wrong way, but I hope I never see you again." HORROR STORY! DO NOT USE! They were contacted (by AAA) to tow my car to an Audi dealership. They arrived, put it on flatbed and then told me they would not take to dealership - but instead were towing to their garage. There they offloaded my car and told me to wait and another driver would tow me - but that driver's tow truck wouldn't start so (hours went by) and then they put on tow truck and a rag on the side to as it was not straight and wheels were scraping against the tow truck! Great towing company but not so great mechanic. i took my car to them right before sandy they had it for a week when I picked it up there was a puddle of trans fluid under the car they had it for another day and when I got it home it was still leaking. As I write this its sitting in the shop for 4 days now getting the same problem fixed, I haven't had my truck for a month now...use the tow but have it towed back to your own shop...hope this helps someone, the guys were nice and understanding but that dosent fix cars, sorry if they didn't give me a warranty I'd be SOL. read more

They took our permited car out of our parking lot where we live on a sunday night. Almost impossible to get in touch with anyone and they had no solution except to wait until they opened the next morning (when we had work). The driver had us stay in my SUV while he put my car on top of his tow truck. He didn't strap in the wheels and told us to stay in my SUV, "where it would be safer." Once we got there, I told them what happened and they said they would run a diagnostic for $95. I agreed and they told me they would update me in 30mins. Two hours later, I had my husband go check on them. They just started looking at it and told me I blew a head gasket and that they would have to redo my entire engine. They said it would be around $4,000 and I would have to leave it there. We called AAA to see how much it would be to tow our truck to Howell, NJ (2.5 hours away) and decided to work on the car closer to home. They got mad that we were leaving and told me that the tow truck can't go inside their property and they close in 5 mins and we're going to lock the gates. They said they would also charge us a fee for storing our car in their lot. I told them that I'm pushing my car out now to be there for the AAA tow truck. He went to get his manager and told me not to touch my truck. They told us that even outside of their gated lot was their property and we couldnt keep our car there. We pushed our truck out of their lot anyway and onto the side of the highway. The AAA truck met us immediately and helped us get home. read more

I went to get two wheels completely replaced after an accident not too far from this location on I-87. RJ mentioned a possibility that the tire pressure monitor system could have been damaged in the accident, but was unsure. He asked if I wanted them replaced, which I declined (I did not want to agree to replacing them if there was a possibility they didn't need to be replaced). When the car was returned to me, the two new wheels were completely missing their tire pressure sensors which are $150 a piece. RJ claimed that they must have both fallen off in the accident, only to later make a second claim that they were broken in half and he discarded them. My photos the day of the accident shows both sensors still on the wheels. Having a conversation about this over the phone, he made it clear that there was nothing they could do about the missing parts. Any professional who will tell you two different stories in the same conversation is not trustworthy, and you should avoid doing any kind of business with them. Had it not been a time sensitive emergency, I would not have come here. Do not make the same mistake. read more

This place is a rip off. I was bamboozled into getting my car towed from the highway them being charged extra money. I did not receive a receipt for my tow. I was told many different things. My receipt (when I finally received it via email after having to call them the following morning) did not match the receipt I originally signed and my insurance also had a different price and receipt on their end. They did not have any records of my car at first as well. I would never recommend being towed by this company. They take advantage of the moment and tell you anything in that moment. read more

They looked at it and then worked with us to get it towed the 90 miles home to get the diagnosis confirmed by our mechanic. They were responsive and professional throughout the entire process. Dear Yelp: Please advise all you consumers out that to AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. Here is my story and I challenge the place to dispute any of the following. My wife drives a S60 Volvo that had a blow out on the NYS truway during a rainstorm. The tire was blown and the car was towed to JANS by AAA. A new tire was ordered and mounted. Before paying I checked the car and the air pressure indicator continued to to be lit. Upon questioning, they said that I would readjust and go off after a few miles. When the air pressure indicator didn't go off by the next day, I took it to the dealer. I had to pay $500 for the dealer to replace the wheel hub and studs that was broken by JANs. When I approached JANS with my complaint, they offered to pay me the $500 but only if we gave them the old hub and broken studs. I refused and my lawyer sent them a letter last month. As of today 1/10/15 I have heard NOTHING. Tell JANS we are not going away thanks to the help of YELP. read more

Awesome shop with very professional staff. They called Monday morning with the state of my car. Very reasonable quote and accurate diagnosis. I elected to scrap my car as the repairs were more than it's worth. When I came with a trailer to pick it up the charges for tow and shop work were very reasonable. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I can't speak for their car repair service, but do not book a budget truck through this location. Drive the couple extra miles down to Paramus! I booked a 16 foot Budget truck over a month in advance. I promptly received an email confirmation along with a second confirmation 48-hours in advance. The morning of our move we arrived early as we knew it was going to be a busy day and we had a lot to get done. Our pickup time was scheduled for 9am and we waited, waited and waited for someone to eventually open the gate and let us in - there were about 4 other cars all waiting. At 9:10am I called the shop thinking maybe we were in the wrong location - no answer. We waited some more. Eventually, a tow truck driver returned and spoke with a gentleman who was also waiting. We were then informed they "decided not to open that day." Now it's nearly 10am and we're in a scramble to find a last minute truck. Fortunately, Paramus had a truck available so we made the 40 minute round trip drive. I will never book through this location ever again - very unprofessional and incredible inconvenient. read more
