We've been staying at Buena Vista campgrounds for many years, and we usually stop at Jan's for breakfast at least once - over Memorial weekend we stopped twice. Saturday. I tried the "Mr. Ed" for the first time -- WOW -- two eggs on a gigantic biscuit with sausage gravy, hash browns, cheese AND pork green chile. Sharon had a stupendous "Golden Malted Waffle" with two toppings -- the blueberry was good, but the apple was exquisite. Sunday. Sharon ordered the "Farmer's Omelet" with ham, onions (lots of these), cheese, smothered in sausage gravy -- but she smothered it further with a cup of green chile. I went with the "Simple Breakfast" of two eggs, hash browns, sausage links (which were to die for) and subbed the toast out for a waffle. Boy howdy. The staff are all friendly, attentive and professional. The atmosphere is laid back and rustic, and it's fun to listen to bits of conversation from the locals. I feel inclined to make it our regular breakfast stop whenever we're in town. read more

A non-nonsense local restaurant with spacious seating and an extensive menu. The food was good and the ambience had a small town feel with the staff friendly and efficient. This is definitely a place for the locals as the Buena Vista Optimist Club meets there weekly on Thursdays. It was nice to see a sense of community with all of the locals coming to break bread. I enjoyed my time there and will visit again whilst in the region. Check it out. You'll be glad you did. read more

Recommended! This is a very down-to-earth American hearty-meal restaurant. I enjoyed my Farmer's Omelette (even though they forgot the gravy) and my wife really enjoyed her "Kiddies & Seniors Lunch" size Chicken Fried Chicken Dinner, which came with mashed potatoes and lots of gravy. My impression is that Jan's has been the local breakfast mainstay for breakfasts for decades. They handle individuals and large groups with equal grace. Homemade breakfast vibes! I was camping in the area, and it was pouring rain. We wanted to give ourselves a break from the wet weather and happened upon this spot. It was only two of us and we got there are 9am so we were seated very quickly. The waitresses were on top of it. Running around and taking care of everyone. I like that they have the payment set up at the front of the restaurant, it speeds things up a bit so that the servers don't have to deal with the money. The food was pretty good as well. Pancakes were bigger than my head! The chicken fried steak was amazing, so flavorful and juicy. They have homemade pie and so many other options. I wish it was a bit closer as I would love to try more things on the menu. If I am in the area, I would be happy to go back and recommend for people to give it a try. Overall 4/5 stars! read more

We notified the restaurant that we would bring a large group of 19 the day before for breakfast. Then when we arrived we were told that the computers were down and that we couldn't be seated and that we should go down the street to the Rooster. However they sat several people right before us and didn't turn them away. We offered to pay in cash but they still turned us away. read more

We were in town for a wedding and needed a nice local spot for breakfast. Jan's hit the spot. It's everything you would hope for and expect from a local diner. The food and service were good, and the atmosphere was like a typical local diner where everyone knew each other. Yet they accepted us as one of their own. My daughter and I stopped in here for some lunch after horseback riding at a stable nearby. This place was pretty busy. We got a table right away but it took a little while to get our food after ordering. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, hash browns and eggs and my daughter ordered the kids/seniors chickens tenders, fries, and green beans. I wish they had a proper kids menu. Her 'kids meal' was over $9. She also ordered a kids apple juice, which was $2.25(somewhere around there), and it was a pretty small Styrofoam cup. Staff was friendly. The OJ was too tart for our liking so our waitress traded for another drink. The hashbrowns were good an crispy. On the other hand, the corn beef brisket sandwich was not good, meat had a funny taste, dry and hard, similar to jerky. I didn't complain since we had already sent the OJ back. Jan's is a quaint breakfast/brunch diner in town that offers up some big servings, a variety of food options, and hometown feel. I highly recommend the jalapeno elk sausage which was delightful. I'm a bit picky about my eggs, so these did not seem appealing given the scrambled eggs I saw come out thick and chunky. There was a buy one get one half off special for Bloody Mary's and Mimosas that you really can't beat. Service was a bit slow both to take our order and for the food to come out, but the place was also quite busy given it was a Saturday. Surprisingly busy for a Monday morning, but then again it is tourist season. We were seated promptly even though it was crowded. We quickly got coffee and water, but it took a minute for the waitress to come over. My mother enjoyed her French toast; she liked that it was crispy! First off: we were admittedly there on a Sunday - so, brunch time on a fall weekend in BV. I expected a wait, and was pleasantly surprised when they told us it would be 30-35 minutes. No problem. We had already looked at the menu online (it helped us choose the restaurant) and knew what we wanted. My mom doesn't like breakfast, but we found Jan's online and saw there were plenty of salads and sandwiches on the lunch menu which was served after 11. It was 11.50 so we were good. The server came to take our order and told us that lunch isn't served until 12 on Sundays "because of church" even though the menu and online says in several places that lunch is served after 11. My mom said, "well it's 11.50 right now, can we not order for lunch that starts in 10 minutes?" and the server said they would have not even started to prep the kitchen for lunch yet. (whaaaa? okay...). After she took our order, she came back and told us that she went ahead and put in the order for lunch because they weren't going to get to our ticket until at least 40 minutes anyway. Our server was pretty unapologetic about this unusual wait for food. She told us after we'd ordered that it would likely be upwards of 40 minutes before we got our food. I asked, "is this normal?" and she said "yes, for Sunday breakfast." We eventually got our food after being at Jan's for an hour and 45 minutes. At another restaurant, if I'd had to wait for my food for an hour the server would be pretty apologetic and likely offer to comp something for the delay. Not here. I had to ask for a refill on my drink while we were waiting - my server didn't notice. On the plus side: the meal was good. And the staff were al hustling hard. I felt for them. But overall - it's certainly not worth the time we had to spend there. Here's my take on this. Jan's has a pretty large seating area. So, if you know that Sundays are going to be a rush, and it's "normal" that people have to wait an hour for their food once they're sat, then it sounds like your kitchen and/or your wait staff might not be able to keep up with the demand. So you should either take out tables so you can get people in and out of there quicker and give your servers a chance to make more tips, or you should at least tell your tables that they're in for a long morning before you seat them. read more

We stopped at Jan's restaurant on our way to southern Colorado in the San Juan mountains it's halfway between Denver and Lake City Colorado. It's a perfect spot to have a wonderful lunch. The service was spectacular, and the food was homemade and delicious. We had a variety of different meals... Chicken fried steak (huge portion!), BLT, spaghetti, Open faced roast beef, and smothered burrito. Everybody was super happy with what they had and there was more than enough food for everybody. This little restaurant is open til 2pm 7 days a week and definitely a local favorite. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the restaurant is full of local patrons and gives you the "everybody knows everybody" feel. Nice little diner! They sat us immediately and food took less than 15 minutes to come out. Food is typical diner style but the speed really elevates this restaurant. Biscuit & gravy isn't true southern biscuit and gravy, almost more like out of a can, so if you like your gravy I would avoid choosing that option. Great, deserving of better reviews Let's review apples to apples. For what Jan's is it deserves praise and a crown for being very good. Friendly service, small-town charm, and delicious coffee shop-style food. You're not going to get a filet mignon with a white table cloth. Instead, hearty meals with paper napkins are what to expect. The hot open-faced turkey sandwich was delicious. We salivated in remembrance of it all the way up Independence Pass after dining there. There is a good reason why every table was full when we visited in the midst of the pandemic in July 2020. Two years later, while finishing this review, I can still taste the food and look forward to when our paths cross again the future. Jan we will be back! read more

Jan's is a wonderful venue serving up hearty breakfast and lunch meals on the main strip in BV. Passing through a friend and I figured we'd have a late breakfast and we're surprised as how affordable most of the menu items are. Living in the high country I'm used to seeing astronomical pricing on common foods, but Jan's has you covered. I went for a green chili smothered chili relleno with hash browns , eggs and toast. The portion is absolutely massive. The chili was piping hot and I ended up just slathering it all over my hash browns. This was the perfect fill up for a short drive to Aspen. I give the food 4 out of 5 stars - it was good homestyle food, and giant portions. I don't think anyone in our group had complaints about dinner. I got the German chocolate pecan pie and the key lime pie to go. The slices are huge and yummy. Others in our group got the chocolate pie and the lemon cloud pie- both were happy with theirs too. What's really bringing me to write a review though was the service - 6 out of 5 stars. Not only were they really accommodating to our giant group of 11, but they treated us and everyone else who walked through the doors like family. There aren't a whole lot of restaurants for breakfast in town and this one always seems packed. The food is average. Service is very good with a lot of team work. I couldn't find any healthy options on the menu which was surprising, not even an egg-white omelette. No Eggs Benedict, etc. either. This is old-fashioned diner fare across the board. My husband's order included two pancakes and they were HUGE. He couldn't even finish one. I wish the server would have warned him because it was wasteful. The dining room is comfortable enough but it needs some serious remodeling, and I would start with the floor. It is carpeted and I hadn't noticed I stepped in maple syrup on the way out.
