    Tonkatsu curry
    Daisy H.

Stopped by for a take out order right when they opened. So they weren't busy at all and the food was ready pretty quickly. I got the tonkatsu curry. I like how they packed the curry sauce separately, so it doesn't make the cutlet soggy or let the rice soak up all the sauce before I eat it. The tonkatsu is really tender and not too oily. The curry was also very good. Wish it was slightly warmer though, but it's just a personal preference. Definitely would go back again and dine in next time.

This is the new spot that took over Naglee Park Garage. Feel like it's pretty underrated. If you like Japanese curry, for example traditionally milder in flavor like what they serve at Gombei, Japa Curry is more intensely savory and fruity and has a slight kick, and gives you the option to up it a little more but it never gets really hot like you imagine Thai or some Indian curries can get. It also comes with super finely shredded cabbage and fukujinzuke (pickled daikon). We went in the early evening this past Wednesday. It was just the chef by himself working. They've been open for only a month, and he mentioned it was a slow day. That parking lot probably contributes a bit to it. I expect that to change if groups start coming and realize what a great space it is inside and on the back patio (which also has heat lamps). If you like outdoor seating, beer on tap, live sports on TV inside, this place is shaping up. There were boxes strewn about but that's bc I guess it's been coming together more like a soft opening period. When you enter, you order from a kiosk, and he gets right to work on frying the tonkatsu or karaage. For an idea of what style this place serves, I love Japanese curry and make it all the time at home with S&B Golden Curry (with modifications like chicken broth and a little ketchup/tonkatsu sauce) and recently switched to Nijiya curry flakes and really liked those styles of curry. If anyone remembers Curry House in Cupertino from before Covid, that to me was the best. Ultra savory and zesty and spicy umami bomb. Japa Curry's style sits closer to those styles of curry on the scale where Gombei and more mild and traditional Japanese curries would be on the other extreme. If mild and sweet/traditional curry is a -5 on an intensity of flavor scale, and Curry House was a 5, then Japa Curry would be a 2.5. But having it is still very unique and it's clearly a refined recipe. It still tastes like authentic Japanese curry, but it is amped up in an oniony, jammy, and fruity way, if that makes sense. The tonkatsu could have been more tender but the beef curry was really tender. Portion was a pretty good value for San Jose prices these days. For the chicken karaage they use potato flour and it was pretty airy; I would have liked a dipping sauce with kewpie mayo or lemon wedge and thought it lacked a little there. I'd be thrilled if the karaage were juicier and crunchier or served with a chili sauce or a sweet soy glaze or something like that so maybe if you like it more simple then maybe you'll be into this style.

Cute little hidden gem, I walk by this area all the time for school + house of bagels and just noticed it recently and had to try it out. Food is amazing and the service is friendly. There's only one chef and he greeted everyone that came in + had food out quickly. Cute patio/outdoor seating area. Will come back to try more menu items! I got the braised pork belly curry and a side of spinach, it was great!

Since opening in 2019, Cafe Okawari has been on my list to visit. Since they're only open on the weekdays and street parking is i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-y difficult, stopping by was a challenge. Fast-casual service with limited seating indoors and outdoors. Bus your own table afterwards. Limited Menu; Specialty - Chicken Katsu Curry & Japanese sandos (sweet + savory). F O O D * Egg Salad Sando w/ jidori egg ($13): https://tinyurl.com/khwxepnc I liked that the jidori egg was perfectly jammy, but the rest of the sando was underwhelming. The egg salad was bland, and the shokupan wasn't as pillowy soft as I'd expected. Instead, it had a drier texture that felt more like American white bread. * Chicken Katsu Curry Rice ($21.50): https://tinyurl.com/cwedbaze + Add jidori egg ($3) The katsu curry was fine but expensive for the portion. Crunchy and tender, the chicken katsu (thigh meat) sat atop a bed of perfectly cooked rice - soft, chewy, and sticky, yet with each grain still distinct. The curry was plain tasting and I wish it came with some veggies. The onsen egg is a must add for that silky richness. IMO, you can find better katsu curry in the city for the fraction of the cost ($15-$18) at Curry Hyuga, Nippon Curry, Fumi, Volcano Curry, etc. S E R V I C E We ordered for dine in (outside) but they packed our order to go. When I brought it up, they basically said, there's nothing they can do. Bummer since parking was so hard. Considering how busy they were, our order was ready in several minutes. Overall, after waiting all these years to try Cafe Okwari, it didn't live up to the hype. I'm obvs in the minority but I wonder if the ratings are inflated because they have a prime location to AI/Tech offices, Oracle Park, and Caltrains.

Food 4/5: we ordered the pork katsu rice bento with mini creamy ramen and the Yu Ling chi chicken bento with the spicy miso mini ramen. Everything tasted fresh and hot. We particularly liked the pork katsu, it was perfectly crispy, juicy and well seasoned with the katsu sauce. The ramen didn't have much topping (just scallion and Naruto) but the soup and noodles texture were great. I was looking forward to the Yu Lin chi chicken but was not a big fan of the sauce flavor, it was salty and slightly one note. Rice was well cooked in the bento but I could do without the edamame, they weren't cooked long enough so it was hard to get out of the shell and bland. Service 3/5: we were seated pretty immediately but had to wait quite awhile before anyone served us, it might be because we were more towards the corner and the restaurant was busy. We had to get up to find a server to help us with checking out because no one ever came to check up on us. Ambiance 4/5: nice space, slightly cramped, but generally nice with the exposed brick walls and high ceiling. There's also outdoor seating available here.
