Checked out Curry Hyuga on a weekend night and it wasn't too busy. I love Japanese curry and always trying to find a new place to try. Each table has six different level spices you can try with your curry, i thought level 3 was pretty spicy! The curry is on the thinner side but I liked the katsu and how thick it was and how thin the breading was. I do wish the curry had a little bit more depth to it, but this place had a lot more extras to it! The corn potage was thick and sweet in case you've never had it before! It's a casual eatery that definitely hit my craving!
Curry Hyuga specializes in Japanese curry which is sweeter, milder curry compared to something like Indian curry. And unlike Thai curry, it has no coconut milk. It has almost a thick gravy like texture and often is dark brown in color. I've had Japanese curry in Japan as well as around the SF bay area and I would say the japanese curry here is average at best. The texture is a little lumpy to be honest and there isn't a tremendous amount of curry flavor. Today, we ordered a couple of items off the special menu - Kaki Curry (oysters) and Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti. The Kaki Curry came with six fried oysters, some rice, potato salad, and a dab of sauce for the fried oysters. The fried oysters were fresh and crunchy. Overall, it was satisfying but nothing spectacular. The Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti is a cream sauce based pasta dish with roe, shiso leaves, and nori seaweed. It's an interesting twist to your popular spaghetti dish so the flavor profiles were interesting. The dish was creamy and the nori and roe brought some unami flavor. Between the two dishes, I enjoyed this one slightly more even those this place is a "curry" spot. Dish comes with a japanese cabbage salad and miso soup which tasted pretty standard.
Came here for a lunch date and the food was great! I ordered the pork katsu curry with omurice and my date got the curry udon with pork katsu. I liked that my meal came with a little bit of potato salad, refreshing and chill to go with the warm curry. I do wish mine came with more shredded cabbage though! The egg dome is a MUST to have and I recommend topping with a bit of ketchup to add some sweetness. I tried my date's udon and it wasn't too bad! The udon's curry is more like regular curry rather than oriental curry. The tables have a bunch of spice shakers for giving a spicier kick to your curry, would love if there was a chili oil. Absolutely my comfort food and this is a good stop to get one of the most comforting Japanese meals ever.
This is a solid Japanese curry place. The branding and decor inside is nice at this location (although parking is a little tough). Service was fantastic (friendly, quick, & attentive). The pork katsu, oysters, and karaage were all yummy. Portion sizes were decent (I shared this whole meal with my brother). I DO like my Japanese curry a bit thicker though. It was a little too watery and lacked some flavor. I also needed more curry to even out the proportion of rice to meat to curry in the bowl. But overall a solid spot! I'll be trying the Burlingame location soon, which seems cuter haha
I like how it's labeled as comfort food because that's what it really is. I got the chicken katsu curry, and it was it was like being hugged in a warm blanket. The curry sauce was so savory. The table has a carousel of different spices if you want to amp up the heat, which I did with their level 3 spice (which is powdered habanero I think). I really like that I can customize how spicy I want my curry. As for the chicken, it was crispy and super juicy. A bite of chicken with rice covered with spicy curry was so satisfying. I also enjoyed the side of potato salad, that had a lovely acidity to balance the richness of the curry. I also enjoyed the ambiance inside. It's very clean and I like glow from the wooden panels against the ironwork. And service was great. Our food came out quickly and our glasses were frequently refilled. And the table has a button if you need to flag someone. I would love to come back here to try more off their menu.

I kinda knew that so I paid for extra curry. We decided to try both the chicken and pork katsu. I'm more of a chicken girl and the hubs is more of a pork guy so that's what we both preferred. The curry was a lil sweet for me. And not spicy enough, so I added more chilis, hot sauce, etc, at home. For the pasta, I found it bland. Needed more sauce. I actually added cream and cheese to the leftover and made it more rich and comforting. I have a go to spot in my neighborhood for curry, but I wanted to try something new. Came here for a nice catchup with a friend. Good: - Food came out super quickly! - I liked the special noodles -I got a creamy udon and it was so good and it came with soup and salad too. This is a solid place for lunch. It's a Japanese comfort food mostly deep fried in panko and served with Japanese style curry base. Serving is generous and prices are very wallet friendly. Ambiance is casual friendly and corporate. I've had the Tonkatsu set (Teishoku) and a side order of Menchi Katsu. Teishoku set comes with rice, miso soup, small pickles bowl, and soft shredded cabbage drizzled with classic Japanese sesame miso dressing. Overall this lunch was a pretty good value considering the price, the amount of food and even though the pork tonkatsu was a bit dry it was overall still better than most tonkatsu places in San Francisco.
All locations of this restaurant are great, but I prefer Burlingames based solely off ambiance. Service was good in both locations Best: Signature Pork Katsu Curry Shiso Mentaiko Cream Spaghetti Mentai Cream Cheese Udon Good: Signature Chicken Katsu Curry Both currys were perfectly tasty and had a perfect amount of rice and curry. Comparing the chicken versus pork katsu, I'd say pork katsu wins with how tender it was I loved the shiso mentaiko spaghetti because its one of my favorite dishes in general and they did a perfect job on it. It was so creamy and included a refreshing side salad and miso soup w/ onion bits. I would order it again and its price point is amazing for how full I was afterward The mentai Cream cheese udon didn't come with a side salad or soup but it was also really tasty and the mentai flavor was also perfect here.
Came here twice, once in April and once in May. I ordered the chicken karaage curry the first time and the chicken katsu curry the second time I was here. I liked the chicken karaage a lot, the chicken was juicy & flavorful. However, the curry itself wasn't very flavorful. The chicken katsu curry was pretty average in my standards. I feel like the rice portion compared to the curry was kinda small too. Food came quickly and service was good! Ample seating inside but the location is not the best area.
This is one of my go-to restaurants in the city! I highly recommend their signature katsu curry dish. The katsu is very crispy and juicy. The curry is so flavorful. They have a variety of extra spices for you to put on as well - I recommend their Birds Eye! The staff are all friendly. My group accidentally lost track of time and stayed past closing but the staff were so considerate and kind! The restaurant itself is very cute and good vibes. The last few times I've been there was no wait.
Came here with my friends tonight for dinner and the service and food were pretty top notch. My menchi katsu curry was delicious and the potato salad + rice + cabbage was great as well. Service was good and the over atmosphere of the restaurant was busy but still comfortable. Price wise it's not super cheap but pretty normal for SF. Would recommend!
Killer casual Japanese curry in the Mission district. The signature curry bowl was a slam dunk (we tried both the pork cutlet and chicken katsu -- slight preference for the chicken). It was pretty sweet but the table had five different spices to add in, making it easy to get exactly the level of fire you want. The portion was generous and since they don't have a large menu, the food came out quickly. It's a killer spot for a warm homey meal if you need food and you need it STAT.
My favorite spot for comfort food! It's never too busy and you can just walk right in. It's super convenient that they have call buttons on each table for the waiters so you can take your time before you're ready to order. I love all the katsu curry's but the most important tip is to get a dome egg added on top of the rice!! It's like making it an instant omurice. So tasty! read more

Friendly service and huge portions. Got the chicken katsu curry udon which was just okay (very salty but also not enough flavor at the same time) so maybe I should have ordered the curry instead! The potato salad is also yummy. The chicken katsu didn't wow me which was surprising since I've heard people rave about it. It seemed like standard katsu to me, though the portion is huge and the noodles are nice and bouncy. Also very affordable price point for the portion size. Lots of seating inside at this location and they are open pretty late. read more
So glad there is a Japanese curry spot right here in the Mission! The curry was flavorful and the pork came out so crisp. Service was attentive especially the staff often returning to refill our water. Relatively quiet for a Sat evening with ample seating. Hoping business increases for them soon! Recommend this cozy spot and look forward to coming back . read more

Kare raisu! Curry has never been fancy; it's always been a simple staple in my household growing up. Warm, comforting, and a filling meal that I'd eat growing up and now often cook for myself and my family. My companion asked if I wanted to try Curry Hyuga. I've always wanted to, so I was all for it! This location is quaint. The companion said it felt a bit out of place for the Mission--a super casual vibe with minimalist decor and seating for pairs or small groups. Service is decent, but you operate using their call button. Whenever you have a request, you click it, and the workers are notified. Companion and I both got the Signature Curry. I got the pork and he got the chicken. The katsu is delicious! Very tender and moist meat with a nice, crunchy breaded exterior. Not too heavy, and the portions were deceiving, as we needed takeout boxes. The curry itself was interesting. Maybe I'm used to what I've grown up with, but their curry was thinner and sweeter. It still had that savory aspect but was a bit saltier and richer than I'd liked. The potato salad and fukujinzuke tasted good! For those who like or are interested in Japanese curry, I suggest visiting Curry Hyuga. This is their only location in the city, located off Valencia Street, with garage parking nearby, and it is also close to public transportation. As a girl who grew up with this, I don't think I have plans to come back, but I'm glad I tried! read more

I'm so glad there's one in the city now and it seems they added more things on the menu. I am a sucker for katsu curry udon, so I was very excited when I saw that they now have udon dish, not just rice. The type of curry in the udon is different than the rice plates. Visually lighter, more yellow and has a saltier dashi taste. I really enjoyed it. The chicken katsu was great as well. As for the normal curry with rice, it's darker, heavier, but a lot sweeter. I didn't enjoy this as much. The breading on the pork katsu didn't bind as well and our potato croquet was not cooked all the way. The inside was still semi cold which was a bummer. This is what caused me to knock it down a star, as a lot of people come for the rice plates. They also have a wide variety of chili peppers, I didn't really find any of them paired well with my Japanese curry. Bummed there was no option of togarashi either. I would definitely come back for the curry udon but not sure about the rice plates. The staff were nice and food came out pretty quick. read more
TLDR: Good curry/katsu spot a few blocks in the mission district. Large variety of curry and katsu dishes. Everything comes unspiced but there are up to 9 levels of spice powder on the table. Food: We had the karaage curry and the katsu don. The chicken karaage was crispy and juicy and came with a few different salads. The curry was well flavored and complimented the rice and the karaage. The katsu don was well cooked and the katsu remained crispy. I liked how you could choose chicken or pork katsu. While the menu items don't come spiced, there are a variety of spice powders from level 1 to level 9 - I enjoyed my level 4. Service/Ambiance: It wasn't super busy when we went for lunch. The staff was very kind and was proactive in helping refill waters. The location is also great on Valencia street and near mission delores park. read more
Excited that they opened a location in sf. It's a few blocks away from Mission Dolores Park. We went on a Wednesday night and were seated right away. When you're ready to order, there's a call button on the table. We got their signature pork katsus curry (you get to choose between chicken or pork) and assorted veggie curry. The food came out relatively fast. The curry itself isn't spicy, fortunately, they have the hot pepper flakes for you to sprinkling on top. They have different spice levels. If you want to feel a little kick, I recommend level 6. read more
Great portions with lots of flavor and added spices at the table! The restaurant is so much bigger than i would have imagined, lots of room to accommodate a bit bigger of a party. Another five-star meal at Curry Hyuga! My friends and I left no crumbs after our dinner here. By rec from some friends, I got the mentaiko cream pasta. This was insanely delicious and highly memorable -- the fish roe wasn't overly fishy, and the shiso really came through. Comes with a side of comforting miso soup and salad. I wouldn't normally order a pasta at a place that specializes in such good curry, but I'm so glad I did this time. Came here with a friend to try out a new Japanese curry place! This restaurant is located conveniently right off 16th Street! Upon sitting down, the servers were very attentive, providing us water and checking up on us frequently. I like how every table also has a call button to get the server's attention in case we need more napkins or the check. The ambiance overall is nice and homey! My friend and I got two different dishes. She got the signature, with chicken katsu, curry, and rice. I got one of their alternative dishes: pork katsu and curry over udon! I did notice that the curry used for her dish was much thicker than mine, likely due to her getting rice and mine being noodle-based. I was very happy with my dish! The portion size was very big, so much so that I had leftovers to take home. The curry had a hint of spice, and every noodle I slurped up was covered in curry. The pork was also fried perfectly! CURRY HYUGA CURRY HYUGA CURRY HYUGA. I loved the branch in Burlingame and on the peninsula, so I was excited to try Curry Hyuga in the Mission, and it hit just like the original. This location had no wait on a Thursday night around 6 pm and plenty of space. Service was quick and attentive the moment we walked in for a table for two. The curry is basically identical to the Burlingame location. They do a great job expanding and keeping everything consistent. Crispy katsu, delicious curry, and solid sides. Overall, I loved this location and was surprised it wasn't busier. I do like the Burlingame location a bit more but I honestly just think that's because I enjoy the cozy vibe there a bit more. read more
Ordered via Doordash. I got the chicken katsu curry with extra raw cabbage (free) and a side order of menchi Katsu (round in the picture). The chicken katsu was pretty good, the breading was fried a little too long for my liking and thicker than the thinner panko breading that I've had elsewhere. The curry roux is good and I wish there was more without having to pay extra for it. This is my first time trying menchi Katsu and it has a thick, almost hard breading which I didn't like- inside it was soft meat and cabbage filling similar to a pork and vegetable bun. I don't think I would get the menchi again. read more
Stopped by for dinner with a friend and it was decent. We came by Saturday evening around 6 pm and it wasn't crowded at all. The restaurant is bigger than it looks from the outside as it extends quite a bit in. Ambiance is casual. The menu is pretty straightforward, with a one-page selection of curry rice dishes as well as some other rice entrees. We got the teppanji chicken ($9.50) to share, and I got the hayashi omurice ($17.50) for my entree while my friend ordered the double menchi katsu curry ($18.50). I've never had teppanji chicken before, but it was different from what I expected. It was good, but the menu description said "sizzling chicken" so I wasn't expecting fried chicken. Not sure how it's different from karaage other than the sauce. My omurice was also just okay... The egg and rice were fine, but I wasn't a huge fan of how the hayashi sauce tasted. I don't know how to describe it but there was something in there I didn't like. My friend thought his katsu curry was okay as well; the curry was a bit on the sweeter side. All in all this was a decent spot for Japanese curry in the Mission, but personally I don't think I will be back. read more

A perfect meal for a cloudy SF afternoon. Hearty, filling, Japanese comfort food. We ordered the chicken katsu curry ($15.5) with added veggies ($5), and a side of katsu and egg ($7) because I wanted to try it. The katsu came served on fluffy rice, shredded cabbage, Japanese potato salad, and of course curry. The portions are very generous. The katsu was crispy and had a breading that puffed away beautifully from the interior. The kakuni was fork tender, and the vegetables were also lovely (eggplant, pepper, and kabocha yum!) The interior is clean & casual and the staff are very polite/efficient. They even have buttons on the table for assistance. read more
I feel like I review this place every few months! It's still solid. I go here whenever I want someone to try Japanese curry for the first time. Usually after, they're hooked. The new location is a lot longer / bigger, with a bar in the middle. The tonkatsu curry is so good - crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The curry itself is more savory than sweet. The pork sits on a bed of lettuce atop rice, which keeps it safely separate from the curry. You dip when you're ready to consume, and the ratio is usually pretty balanced. There's additional spices available at each table too if you're feeling it. read more
I love Curry Hyuga. I've been ordering take-out from them for the past couple years and finally made it out to their mission location. They had ample seating and a clean bathroom. Also, all of the staff inside were super kind and attentive. It was extremely great service! When I order from here, I either get the beef omi-rice or the chicken katsu curry. These orders never fail. The beef om-rice has a good balance with the egg, with a hint of sweetness. The chicken katsu always has a nice crunch that pairs well with the curry. I like the chicken katsu curry because it always comes with cabbage salad, which balances out the heavy meal well. The corn pottage soup is good but not my favorite item to order! I really wanted to love this with the raving reviews but the curry and pork kastu did not stand out to me. I thought the curry itself was a little bit underwhelming, it didn't have a lot of flavor to it and felt a bit bland, without the pickled radishes on the side, I feel like I would get tired of the taste super easily. The pork katsu itself was a bit tough and some of the breading was falling off, but it did have a good portion size. We also ordered the corn potato soup which I loved and thought it is worth a try. I love Curry Hyuga and think it's one of the best curry spots in SF. Have been several times with friends to the old location on Market and didn't know they moved recently. The katsu curries here come out crispy and juicy, and they are generous with the portion size. I also like the creamy salad and pickled sides. Non-curry dishes here are also very yummy, including the omurice and the chicken kaarage appetizer. I've also gotten the mentaiko spaghetti special which was creamy and tasty but I think the fish roe gave me hives which was pretty odd (have never had a problem with that at other restaurants). This place is usually pretty busy on Friday/weekend nights (and service is slightly slower) but excited to see how the new location is! read more
Staff were quick and nice here. We came when it wasn't too busy and everything came out fast and hot. The chicken was crunchy, the kaarage had good flavor and was nice and juicy inside. The curry was more gravy like than the curry flavor you think of in curry cubes. They had their ratios figured out perfectly there was an even amount of rice, protein, and curry sauce. Nice Japanese curry! The outside of the store looks really big and nice, especially when the outdoor lights are turned off at night! The staff are super friendly and greet you when you enter and when you leave. Staff answers questions from you even if the questions seem basic Inside is nicely renovated and clean. Portions are pretty good. Taste is ok, not bad. Overall a nice Japanese curry place! read more

I liked the curry! Was savory and rich, and the katsu meat was tender. I was not the biggest fan of the vegetables that come from the add-on, but I did like that they were kind of unique. I do miss the traditional carrots and potatoes. Still quite good. read more
My daughter found this place on her phone, so we gandered near the freeway entrance on Market Street and found Curry Hyuga. The chicken katsu curry was flavorful, crunchy and juicy. I ordered Shiso Mentaiko Cream pasta, which has layers of flavor profiles w/ quite an outstanding Al dente spaghetti. The yuzu lemonade was a miss for us - it could be more flavorful/ lemony. Really tasty, reasonably priced Japanese dishes here, with an extremely hardworking waiter, who deserves a good tip. The ambiance is simple clean and welcoming! read more

As long as you tell your server your allergies, they will make sure you avoid any items with nuts in them. My friend has a nut allergy and they recommended some items that were delicious!
