Taste: Maybe I had great expectations but I found the hot dogs dry and the fries a bit stale. $: The prices were a bit high for the quantity of food and the toppings (hot dogs come out to about $7-$8). Location: Wowza they get a lot of foot traffic! There is a good amount of seating inside and outside the small takeout store too if you want to eat in. What a strange yet wonderful little restaurant. Came here the other day for lunch as we had read so much about this place. I hesitate to call it a "hot dog restaurant", since their hot dogs are NOTHING like the hot dogs we are familiar with. Yes, they are beef weiner-like sausages in buns. But the similarities end there. At Japadog, the "dogs" taste different, more like polish kielbasa (it's rather hard to accurately describe. Best for the reader to try them him/herself. Suffice to say, they're delicious), with the strangest toppings and sauces I've ever seen. (I should note that I've never been to Asia, so perhaps some of these flavors and toppings are familiar there. I don't know). We all asked the counter guy what the most popular "dog" was, as we weren't sure what to order (there are so many choices), and we were told the #1 order, the "Terimayo" dog, was the most popular. So we all ordered it. It was fantastic, covered in crunchy seaweed, and had a very different taste that I can't describe but we all loved and we all devoured our meals. Very unique. The restaurant itself is very, very small, and quite dimly lit inside. Cramped, somewhat. We were lucky to get a small table in the middle of the small space. The table was dirty with a large glob of ketchup (or some red condiment) on it. I didn't like that. Nor the fact that, when we went to wash our hands at the sink at the rear of the restaurant, there were no towels or hand dryer present. So I'm dinging this place a star for cleanliness. Next time, we'll just take out and not dine in. But for a delicious meal, this is a great go-to place. read more

There are different Japa Dog carts around Vancouver, but we went to this actual restaurant because we heard you could get the famous Shaked Fries here. The restaurant is small, with some tables and chairs on the inside and two tables on the sidewalk. Our group of eight managed to snag both of the outside tables; the inside tables (and counter) are good for fitting smaller parties. Be sure to pay attention to the signs so you're waiting in the right lines - there's a line to order and a separate line for pick-up. The place was really busy during lunch time, especially cause our party was the biggest one in there. But, we didn't have to wait long for our food; the Japa Dog team must be used to the frenzy of customers, cause our orders came out quickly, despite the constant flow of people in and out of the small establishment. The hot dogs aren't super huge, so it's fine for each individual to order their own. And, they're not super heavy like typical American dogs ... meaning it's okay to eat this knowing you have a dinner reservation in a few hours. Here's what we got: "Tonkotsu": This dog didn't actually include a hot dog. Instead, it had deep-fried pork cutlet, fresh cabbage, Japa Dog's special sauce and Japanese mayo. I love tonkotsu, so I was excited to order this. The pork cutlet was actually a generous size, and I loved the umami special sauce on top. The fresh bed of cabbage balanced the fried, slightly oily flavor, and I was relieved to see that there was only a little mayo (I don't love mayo, but I appreciate how Japanese mayo is a little lighter). If you want something different (and don't want an actual hot dog), I recommend this one. I justified all the fried-ness in this option because at least it didn't have a hot dog on top of everything else! "Ebi Tempura": Two of our group members ordered this other dog-less version. It featured shrimp tempura, rice and a seaweed topping. I didn't realize that this ebi version came with rice, until our group members starting biting their dogs ... and then I realized that the ebi wasn't atop a hot dog (as I imagined); it topped a bed of rice. The people in our group who ordered this said it was delicious because the tempura batter was really good. They also really liked the seaweed topping that provided extra salty flavor. "Love Meat": Two of our group members ordered this meatier version. It featured arabiki pork, cheese and meat sauce (made with beef and pork) on top of a hot dog. They really enjoyed this version because of the arabiki pork and the flavorful meat sauce (they said it had plentiful chunks of meat), super savory option. So, if you have diehard carnivores in your group, this is the way to go. Combos: If you want to try the famous Shaked Fries, I recommend ordering a combo. The combo comes with the Shaked Fries and a medium sized drink. You can choose from different toppings/flavors for the fries, including butter & shoyu, black pepper, regular, and more. The group members who ordered combos chose the butter & shoyu, black pepper and regular toppings. Of them all, I think I liked the black pepper the most, but the butter & shoyu one was interesting - it was a great sweet-and-salty mix because it really did remind me of shoyu. The Shaked Fries are famous here (and apparently, you can only get them at this location ... they're a hot commodity), so ordering a combo is a great idea. "Croquette": I was originally going to order this version, but then figured it would be too much to inhale in one sitting, since I was not that hungry. But, I still do want to order it one day. It features arabiki pork, fried cabbage and Japanese fried mashed potatoes. I love deep fried anything, especially croquette, so I'm curious to try what these delectable fried potatoes taste like atop the actual hot dog. "Kurobuta Terimayo": Since the terimayo varities are famous here, we had to get at least one of these (one of the more popular orders). It comes with kurobuta pork, teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, fried onions and seaweed. One of our group members ordered this and really liked it, thanks to the sweet teriyaki sauce and teri flavors. She also really liked the fried onions (think of onion rings, but smaller), which gave this doggie some extra crunch and texture. "Avocado": This was the other hot dog I would have wanted to try. It features beef, avocado, Japanese mayo and cream cheese. I really like avocado, but I hesitated and didn't order this because I wasn't sure how I felt about cream cheese mixed in with the hot dog. This isn't the only flavor that features cream cheese, though, and the avocado topping seems plentiful. When I want something really different, I'll have to give this flavor a try. read more

I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. While I've never seen a hotdog in Japan, this local favorite puts a nice spin on things. Open late and full format it, what you won't get is frills. More like a hole in the wall. But, like many dives, the quality is what it's about. With a little over a dozen choices, I opted for a beloved Japanese meal, Okonomi, there's no Maki but the cabbage, mayo, sauce and Bonita flakes will leave your mouth watering and wishing for more. I made mine a meal with fries and a beverage. The French fries done up with garlic were ok but came out too soft and mushy. I'll pass on the side next time. My wife and I were in Vancouver and we had seen that Japadog was a cool place on one of the many food shows we watch. The place was pretty packed and I ordered an Okonomi Veggie dog (I should have got the turkey because the veggie dog just didn't have any juices at all) The toppings were plentiful and I added some wasimi mayo on the side to dip it into. Wonderful, the dried fish on top were a great touch. The service was fantastic and they had a dude handing out some shaken season fries in front, which were awesome. It was kind of expensive for a hot dog, but I am glad I tried it. They have a few stands around Vancouver, and I heard one has an endamame dog that I would have liked to try. read more

A very unique and tasty treat ! My hotel/hostel was nearby so it was nice to walk down and have a delicious bite. The korubuta hot dogs were very good. This dog has a great snap and is very juicy. It is a sweeter hot dog and has the japanese mayo and seaweed with it. And fries with shichimi and garlic had lots of flavours. However their fries don't taste that good. Not crispy enough. It's more like thin tiny McD fries with soggy texture. Great seasonings, but not the perfect crispy texture as the ones from Costco. Hot dog was good. Loved the texture of the Kurobuta sausage inside. I used to love this place so much and this place was always a must-eat place whenever I drive up to Vancouver. I remembered how succulent the Kurobuta was - how well it was grilled, perfectly charred, tender and juicy inside and hot to the mouth. The Umesho shaked fries was to die for - tangy, savory, greasy but oh so good. This has changed so much the last few times I was here. The sausages was also briefly grilled, barely warm. The buns were thrown into an oven and only very hastely grilled. The Umesho fries does not taste like anything. I literally was so confused what flavor I was eating. I miss the old Japadog. On my first trip to Vancouver, I had one goal - Go to JAPADOG! Wow, did this place live up to its expectations! My husband and I passed by for lunch during the week. The place is small inside and has limited seating. Despite that, there are still plenty of people inside. We stood in line and looked at the vast amount of japadogs available. The great thing is they list some of their popular stuff so you can get an idea of what to get if you have no clue. We were definitely feeling gluttonous and ordered 2 hotdogs each. ADVICE: Dont do it! Order just ONE hotdog per person, especially if you get a combo with fries and drink. They are deceptively filling! Our combined order was Kurobuta terimayo, avocado, Yakisoba, and Tonkatsu japadogs. We shared a combo with shichimi and garlic fries. Our favorties were Kurobuta terimayo and Yakisoba japadogs. The fries were delicious. The flavors are so unique, it's really hard to describe but it all tasted great. Only one I didn't care for too much was the avocado, mainly because it was so 'plain' compared to others. Not recommended for big groups or families with strollers. This place is really small. Second time here. I came here a long ago when I first visited Vancouver. The kurobuta hot dog was very good minus the bun. Good Asian flavors with mayo, seaweed, some savory sauce. Still it makes a great photo. I think if the quality was better for the base hot dog, the entire meal would be better. The space is super tiny but I see people sitting inside catching up. Personally I find the space too tiny to be used for conversation. The restroom was a confusing experience for me. They had one signage for the men's restroom. The other room was labeled staff room with a note saying to ask for key to the women's restroom. We stumbled to this place while wondering around and I'm glad we did. I only got to try the dessert but oh man was it good. I was afraid it wasn't enough so I ordered two orders for myself. The age ice is a deep fried bun which kind of taste like a very doughy donut with a scoop of ice cream in the middle. I got both vanilla and strawberry. Strawberry was my favorite. I'd definitely recommend it. The place was very small though and felt cramp and there was only about 10 people in there. It seems to be a trend in the area of downtown Vancouver where we were at. I usually never get hotdogs unless at a food truck/Costco food court, so I was pleasantly surprised trying both the classic Terimayo and Spicy Cheese Terimayo for lunch. The sausage was juicy, the bun fresh and toppings plentiful. Personally didn't find the Spicy Cheese really spicy, but there was a slight kick and it was tasty nonetheless. read more

This is a strange combination for me, Japanese style ingredients with a hot dog. Strange but definitely worthy of my mouth and stomach. I had some sort of spicy dog because that's how I roll. It was mid afternoon and it took about 15 mins for the food to arrive. The place is tiny inside so we grabbed an open wobbly bench outside. My husband got the katsu dog which I pointed out is basically a tonkatsu in a hot dog bun. This place has many options and all of them seem so good. I would try more. We shared this hot dog with the butter and shoyu fries which taste...exactly how they should taste. Not sure what powder they use for the fries but it tastes like a popcorn-y powder with some sesame/soy. Only complaint was the fries on the bottom of the bag were way too salty but I guess that's expected. There is barely room for a line to order. There was a line, but it did move ok. We grabbed seats just outside of the door to enjoy the weather. I ordered the Love Meat dog. The dog comes topped with meat sauce and melted cheese. It certainly was tasty. The dog had good flavor and texture. The meat sauce was similar to a coney sauce, which I enjoy, so that was a plus. We split an order of the Poutine. Being in Canada that was a must. The poutine was solid. The gravy was tasty as was the cheese. The fries were crisp and good on their own. This is a great casual option as long as the line is manageable and you can find a place to sit. We would certainly eat here again. read more

I travel to Vancouver fairly regularly for work, and I always have to make a stop at Japadog. The Terimayo+nori fries are my favorite combo. Very consistent quality, which is much appreciated! I don't understand what the hype is all about. We ordered almost everything in the menu, but none of them taste good. We had - hot dogs $7-$8: taste bland, not sure if this is even a beef hot dog. Nathan hot dogs taste much better. - yakisoba: a bit too sweet for my palate, but a good portion for $5 - poutin (meat & cheese and Pull Pork) $7-$8.95: skip this one and get it somewhere else. - takoyaki (regular one) $6.95: the only decent item in the menu. It's good enough and the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 star. Overall we spent $51 for 4 people. I don't think we'll come back. read more

My boyfriend had the Wagyu dog and I had the Meat Lovers dog. Both were equally good. You have to order on the outside of the restaurant and you'll get to pick up your food from the inside when they call your number. Service was pretty quick, there's seating available outside. When planning our visit to Vancouver I knew we had to try Japadog as it was loved by the late, great Anthony Bourdain. There was a cart just a block from our hotel but they were out of fries and a couple other ingredients so we opted to walk a few more blocks to the actual restaurant. The dining area was small and already packed but we placed our order and managed to squeeze ourselves into a spot to dine in. I ordered the signature Kurobota Terimayo and my wife had the Love Meat. I also got the black pepper shaken fries. My Terimayo was excellent, fun flavors of teriyaki, onion, and mayo on top of a damn tasty dog. My wife loved her Love Meat, likening it to a gourmet chili dog. I couldn't get over how delicious the black pepper shaken fries were and munched on them all the way back to our hotel room. I finally visited the store location years after first trying the original Japadog stand on burrard in front of Sutton Place hotel. This local sensation has really set a name for itself. The original menu is expanded with many Japadog options and poutine. The store location now has desserts. I tried the Kobe kurobata and the deep friend bun with green tea icecream. Loved the Teri mayo sauce and seaweed topping on the Japadog. The fries bun with the ice cream is a different type of bun and had a nice crisp look. Store location is small with a few tables. I'm speaking and giving my honest opinion on the hot dogs and Karaage chicken only. The hot dogs are alright nice looking though. Not worth the price. I've always wanted to try a Japanese version hot dog. It was just a hot dog with Asian fusion toppings. Nothing to separate significantly from a regular hot dog. There version of Karaage chicken I did not like at all. It is not the usually version I'm use to which is Krispy flour breaded and flaky seasoned. There's is just a marinated flavored, red colored, and with sesame seed version. I wish I had room for Poutine fries though. It was nice to check it off my bucket list though. read more

Japanese flavors and hot dogs combined? Am I in heaven?? Two of my favorites together can only create something great and it didn't disappoint. Japadog has a variety of creative and tasty hot dogs that will please everyone's palate. I ordered the okonomi, butter and shoyu fries and pulled pork poutine. Part of what makes a hot dog great is the bun and it is excellent here. The crust of the bread was toasted while the inside was warm and soft. It went well with the Japanese mayo and the charred hot dog. My favorite part of the hot dog was the bun but that speaks a lot about the bun because the hot dog and condiments itself was delicious. The fries were mixed with crispy and tender pieces. Butter and shoyu sounds like a weird combination but it worked and was delicious. Not too salty or greasy imo and is better than your traditional salted french fries. The poutine was great as well. They were light on the gravy so the top of the fries barely had any sauce on it, but when you get to the bottom fries covered in gravy then it's great. The inside is very small so during rush hour you'll most likely have to stand to eat. It's part of the Japanese experience from what I was told so enjoy. read more

Great place to grab a quick and tasty bite! My friend and I were visiting Vancouver and came here to get some food to eat on our drive out. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant but it was quite full, so my friend stopped in the alley beside it while I ran in to order. For a Saturday evening it was not very busy, which was perfect. This location has a decent amount of seating both inside and outside. Other people have said that if you go later in the day some menu items might be sold out - that was true for the Kobe Beef hotdog and the Chicken Karaage. We both got the Kurobuta Terimayo hotdog, since online it said that it was listed as "one of the must eat items in the world". I don't know if I agree with that but it was certainly delicious! It was a quick 2 minute wait for the order, and portion size was enough for each of us. The Kurobuta sausage was juicy and the Japanese toppings on top were perfect, lot of flavour.
