I never eat hot dogs. Okay... Maybe once a year. But if I lived near Japadog, I would easily eat them multiple times a week. You must put this on your to eat list. YOU MUST! I literally wanted to try every hot dog on the menu but I held back. I only got two. The okonomiyaki dog (pork) and the teri mayo dog (beef). And I'm still thinking about them daily. I also got two orders of fries on top of that! At first when I heard the butter shoyu fries were highly recommended I was hesitant. But I trust my fellow foodies so I ordered them. I also ordered the seaweed fries in addition to that because, well, there is no such thing as too much fries! The butter shoyu fries are easily one of the best things I have ever eaten. You need eat these at least once in your lifetime! Everything was so fresh and crispy I didn't feel gross after like I normally do when I eat american hot dogs. Best fusion street food at a great price Vancouver has to offer. Something that should be known by tourists. Staff always friendly and hotdogs always very well condimented tasty and filling. The only sad part it's that it's only located in Vancouver. Expanding for Burnaby and new west would be awesome. Japadog it's so well made that one often seems not to be enough. Finally I tried the famous Japadog that I've heard about from my friends who visited/lives in Vancouver and it was one of the best hot dogs I've had. We went to the original Japadog location in Vancouver early August; the place was pretty packed as it was lunchtime but they do have plenty of seating inside and a few tables outside the restaurant. I ordered the famous Japadog (Terimayo) and Shichimi & garlic fries (as their most popular flavor Butter & Shoyu was sold out). The blend of seaweed and mayo on the hot dog was great, the fries were regular fries with seasoning which was tasty. I wish I had more room to try all the other items on their menu while I was in town. But next time I'm in Vancouver, I'll definitely try other hotdogs on their menu and hopefully the Butter and Shoyu fries are not sold out. Definitely a must try when visiting Vancouver. read more

Visiting Vancouver for 1 night, I was excited to check out Japadog because of all the reviews, but I found the kurobuta terimayo (best seller) pretty underwhelming especially for the price. It's not very big and even though the seaweed flakes give it an interesting flavour, overall I didn't think it was anything amazing. The biggest disappointment was the shichimi & garlic fries - barely warm, soggy and no flavour. Having said that, the age ice with black sesame ice cream is freaking BOMB. It's basically a donut hotdog (i.e. deep fried and sugared) filled with 3 scoops of black sesame ice cream (with a real black sesame taste). It's only like $3 and pretty sizeable. Im not a hot dog person, but this place was highly recommended from a good friend.. Boy was I surprised... Im giving a hot dog shack 4 stars.. Take all the things you hate about a hot dog, the crappy meat, the shoddy bun and squirt bottles of crap, and throw it out the window... I felt like each hot dog was being created by a sushi chef to the very end, when he actually takes a blow torch to the cheese on top. The 'love meat' is the one you want to start with.. Think about that comfort food feel of a mac and cheese and throw a hot dog under it.. It was really good.. The fries, were very unique also.. Rather than being plastered with oil or seasoning, they are lightly dusted in a paper bag and give a really nice subtle taste they are going for.. I had never heard of JapaDog, which means I didn't have the high expectations normally associated with a place that's been featured on TV and has hundreds of Yelp reviews and a high rating average. So, I'm not sure if it was having zero expectations or not, but I really liked JapaDog! Terimayo hot dog = delicious with the teriyaki sauce. The sweetness of the sauce really made for an interesting flavor. The hot dog itself could have had more japanese flavor. Schichimi and garlic Fries - tasty, but a bit limp. JAPADOG, where have you been all my life? I LOVED the Kurobuta Terimayo hot dog (Kurobuta sausage with teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, fried onions, and crispy seaweed strips, all on a hot dog bun). J didn't like it as much as I did, but we were both glad we had ordered the Kurobuta version rather than just the plain old Terimayo (which comes w/a normal hot dog -- mehhhh). I was confused by their "shaked fries," but all that name means is that they take regular fries & give 'em flavor by shaking 'em in a bag with your choice of flavored powder/spices. We got the Butter&Shoyu flavor because it's their most popular one, but we think it's overrated. Not that flavorful or mindblowing. The inside is pretty dingy and crowded, and there are a couple of old-looking tables out on the sidewalk. Not the greatest ambiance, but I'd be a regular if I lived in Vancouver. Despite the underwhelming Butter & Shoyu fries, the Kurobuta Terimayo made my day, so... 5 stars! read more

I really like hot dogs. I don't know why, but I do. There's something about layering ketchup, mustard, relish, sauerkraut, and whatever else on top of a sausage that makes it really chomp worthy. I've been to Japadog twice now - first was a few years ago at a cart; this time around was at their storefront off of Robson St. Stepping in - it reminds me of a hole in the wall college cheap eats place. It actually didn't look that appetizing at first - there's something not very appealing about watching weiners lay dormant on a grill cooking. No sizzle, no sound. Well, maybe a little sizzle, but it just looked sad. Not Japadog's fault - I've been to another famous hot dog joint that also had sad weiners laying on the grill. Perhaps someone should discover a way of making hot dogs cook a little more exciting. Fake grill steam or fire would be a nice addition. Anyway, I ordered the Terimayo - felt safe going with this order. Seaweed plus some tasty looking sauce. $5 out of my pocket. It's a decent sized hot dog - probably just enough to hit the spot for small to mid sized eaters. Added just a few condiments (since it already had sauce/seaweed, I didn't have to add much more). Took a bite - pretty decent - I digged the seaweed and orange sauce. Nothing too special about the sausage though. I'd probably come back again - just because their hot dogs are unique; however ,it won't blow your socks off. I honestly think it's tough to come up with a super sonic delicious hot dog....it's one of those foods that great and fun to eat, but how tasty can someone really make it? read more

Omg this place was another highlight of my trip with my boos... The line was a bit long as well but well worth the wait. I had gotten the Teri mayo kurobota it comes with fries which u can choose the flavoring we were told that the butter shoyu flavor was bomb but for me it was mehhhh I did love my hot dog it wasn't your normal hot dog cause I chose the sausage one but I can't remember if that was the correct name.. Walking in, thankfully my wife and I came in right before the lunch rush(10:55am!) we got the Okonomi and Love Meat sausage dogs. The restaurant is rather small with few areas to sit, let alone sit comfortably, but it's still seating! The price was okay but not great at about $5(US) per dog. Overall the dogs were good but nothing I would crave on a whole. I like that they have a good assortment of condiments including pickles, spicy pickles, mustard, ketchup, and more! The buns are all toasted well and sausages taste crisp(a must for me). I do appreciate that the sausage dogs didn't taste too oily like(another plus! So overall good food but not awesome to me. You can find Japadog stands all over Vancouver and they have one storefront location located on Robson St. The storefront location is very small, but even with a long line the speediness of the line flies by. My party and I ordered the combo, comes with dog + fries + drink. We got the Aononi fries, spicy kick. The garlic parm fries - which were decent. We wanted to try one of their unique fries, but they were out. Overall, the hotdogs here, no matter what flavor is worth it. So much flavor in every bite, lots of different toppings and styles. Each dog had their own taste and influence - which makes it a great lunch destination. The size of the dogs were really big as well. Definitely filled me up. My only concern is the fries package, it came in a bag and that bag tends to sog up the fries really quick. read more

My avocado dog wasn't "hot", I took a bite out of it as soon as I got it and it was warm at best - it also lacked flavor. I also ordered the butter and shoyu fries. Unfortunately, it seems like it may be an acquired taste as I could only eat about 4 fries before giving up. The restaurant itself isn't a bad place. Also, my food preference is MY preference. My rating is based on the fact that I'm not a HUGE hot dog fan... but there's definitely a fun novelty to Japadog! I had no idea that it even existed until my friends introduced it to me. So I was in Vancouver and we were limited on meals to try different restaurants, but they said that WE HAD to go. They had gone before a few years back, when they were only a cart...so once we finally found the store, we were all like kids in a candy shop...jaws dropped at the awesome menu! Imagine...all of your favorite Japanese foods, on top of a hot dog! Because there were 5 of us, we were able to each order something different and try each other's. We tried: - Mochi Minestrone...good, but I could have done without the huge mochi balls. (The mochi balls were the size of the ones that you get in ginataan.) - Butter & Shoyu Shaked Fries - Okonomi - Spicy Cheese Terimayo - Croquette The Croquette is definitely really good. But I also liked the Spicy Cheese Terimayo. If we had more time and I had space for it, I would have ordered one of the Ice Age. OMG Where has this place been all my life?! Wanted to try everything and I almost did trying a taste of a bunch of my friends dogs. Uh, that didn't sound right, but I don't care! You can also get just a regular hot dog but I don't know why you would do that. They also had the veggie which my vegetarian wife did not even try. It was like going to vegas - no holds bar. This tiny little spot where we had squeezed in to order our food, almost felt like we were in Japan. I had the Terimayo and the Croquette with the shichimi & garlic fries. Yes they flavour their fries! You also have to try the Kurogoma ice cream dogs! They're good for you. And the Mochi Minestroni soup is to die for on a cold winters day. The people working there are a blast as well. They look like they love their jobs and always try to be helpful. I wanted to give this place 4 stars but I had to be honest with myself. I wanted to try one I haven't seen at the carts, so I got a Tonkatsu (pork cutlet). Basically a Katsu-Sandwich on a hot dog bun. The red cabbage, tonkatsu-sauce and mayonnaise were good as expected. Funnily enough, this was the first time I noticed the bun at Japa Dog (I guess the bratwursts were too big for me to notice before). It was good. Like the Buns Master Bakery kind, not ones that are too squishy all the way to the outside. I didn't see the napkins they put under the dog inside the little basket, so I got some more. Sorry for wasting them... I got a fresh tonkatsu. The girl who deep-fried it cut it in half and left the other half on the draining rack with the fries. So it may not be crispy when the next person gets it. Also, they had the pre-made fries in bags already. I guess you can't always make small batches fresh, but wouldn't putting them in bags make them soggy? I'd rather have fries a bit cold but crunchy than soggy. So, my experience here was good, but I docked a star for that part. It's only been open a few weeks, so I'm sure they'll figure stuff out. I found it cool, but so funny that they went with a traditional Japanese-feeling decor. Dark wood, with special hinges on the door. So pretty! The grid thing on the ceiling, too. I like how the dining room opens to the street, because it's really small otherwise. There is a window on the side of the cooking area, but it doesn't look like you can order there. It's a good idea that they have a little sink in the corner, so you can wash the sauce off your hands without having to wait for the washrooms. Before I visited, I didn't think you could do very much with a hot dog. The best I had before coming here was probably Wvrst in Toronto; but the hype over Japadog was so real, and very much well deserved. We got the terimayo and kurobuta terimayo. Although not a huge difference between the two, unarguably the best hot dogs I ever had. The meat may have been standard but tasted superb with whatever magic mayo that makes up Japadog's secret recipe. I probably took a total of one minute to finish my entire hot dog. Since we got the combo, we ordered the butter & shoyu + shicimi & garlic fries. I enjoyed the latter a lot more since that had more of a kick due to the hot pepper. But the butter & shoyu fries were delicious as well and it's so rare to find such delicious fries on the side which are as good as the mains. If you ever visit Vancouver, this is a must-go. read more

Wow! So Japadog got a Robson St Venue now!! Let me tell you, this is a real 'enrichment' for the Hot Dog fans of Vancouver because here you can sit inside while enjoying your delicious Oroshi o.o. and not having to sit it out in the rain which takes the joy of a good hotdog. This location also offers some other goodies: Fries in 3 different flavors inspired by the typical Asian influence that Japadog comes with as a brand. They also offer 'sweet hot dogs' with a chocolate banana combination which did not really hit my spot but others said they like it. They also accept Debit Card and have metered parking up front, so if you are the victim of a huge lunch time office order this might make your life a little easier. ;-) Go Japadog! Of course I only came here for a snack which was to get the fries but I'm sure their hotdogs are of better quality like most people write here. I had shichimi garlic fries ( I think that's how you spell it) which was not that bad. The only reason why I would give this three stars is because I thought the fries would be of higher quality. I would have thought the fries would have been a thicker cut and kind of drenched in the garlic but it just felt like it was sprinkled on there. The hotdogs do look good though read more

Japadog on Robson is my go-to for "fast food" when my stomach is in dire need of food! When there is a line-up, there is only a bit of a wait. They do take-out or dine in. I normally don't dine in due to their small seating space where it gets crowded at times. The smoke inside this small space might bother some people. So, I normally take my food home or I eat at a nearby park. The staff is always very POLITE, friendly and efficient. They have the best seasoned fries in the city, in my opinion. They have a small menu and I've never regretted any one of the Japadog choices I've had in the past. read more

I used to line up at their cart in front of Sutton Place Hotel all the time. How nice to be able to sit down now. I always go for the kurobuta pork terimayo hotdog. The flavoured fries are an interesting concept but after trying a few of them, think I'll stick to classic fries. Their other hotdogs, I don't like quite as much. Still, this place gets 5-stars because its essentially a hot dog cart in restaurant form, and one perfect hotdog is good enough to warrant a perfect rating. Go at 11am when they open and there is no line up. It will still take up to 10 minutes to prepare your food though. read more

5 stars for creativity!! What an out of the world experience. They take something ordinary like hotdogs and turn them into something fantastically different. I had to think twice when I first saw these hotdogs. I had to try to fully imagine the taste of the hotdog that is combined with say yakisoba noodles, or a croquette, or seaweed, or whatever Japanese inspired twist they add on to these things. Indeed, Japadog adds new meaning to hotdogs. When you eat one of these, you willingly accepts all the different flavor components that are mashed up onto a dog.
