Brought my 1999 honda crv with a known bad transmission into Japanese Auto Tech shop. the mechanic (Paul) properly diagnosed problem and told me he could fix it but recommended that i just buy another car. The cost to repair it would cost more than the value of the vehicle. I offered to sell the vehicle to him but he said it is not worth fixing. I offered to pay him for his services since he came into his shop on Sunday (his shop was closed) to check on my vehicle since it was my only day off. He refused payment for his services. He works to satisfy his customers and knows that it's better to have great work and keep his customers coming back, than it is to rush and make a quick buck. Larger auto repair shops and auto dealerships do it as a business. They have guaranteed cars coming in, so they focus more on making the money. I live about 30 minutes away and have plenty of other closer options for auto repair but Paul is definitely my number one choice. They said i could come in and when the tow truck was late they said to take it somewhere else because it's going to be too much work for them. I brought my car in for a second opinion and to feel out if this shop could be my primary location. The man named Young charged me $100 to review my vehicle after assuring me that the quote would be free over the phone. Turns out he meant that the quote to inspect my vehicle would be free. The inspection however was $100. How he got me was by quoting me a work order for an estimate. He wrote onto the quote an inspection and a charge for that inspection which I overlooked. Being naive, I signed the paperwork without asking about the charge that was clearly stated. On his part he didn't go over his work order or state that I would be charged. My experience with Young is that he isn't honest and provided a service that at some other places would have been free. When I mentioned that over the phone he said the quote would be free he pointed to the work order I signed as if he were playing a trump card. So I paid the $100 and did not put up a fuss. It was a matter of fact type of conversation. The inspection itself was typical. He pointed out the areas of concern and gave me some pointers, confirming the first auto shops concerns. Young gave an estimate that were not exact numbers rather ball park figures. He also claimed to have given me free oil and an oil filter that would take me another 5k miles. I believe he did at the low price of $100. I wouldn't recommend this man's service or trust his style of communication. read more

I've been to more than 5 mechanics and all has charged me a lot of money. I am surprised by the high reviews here because I have to say that it was the worst experience I've had with a mechanic anywhere. I took my car in to have a technical issue fixed and also to have a leak diagnosed. I described how to reproduce the technical issue. The turnaround was good, and I was told it was fixed, but Young complained about how long it took and how hard he had to work to fix it. Shortly after I drove away, it became clear that the technical issue was not fixed. This was disappointing because it turns out that the shop did not follow my directions for how to reproduce the problem and check if it is still there. Additionally, there was yet another brand new issue after I picked up the car, and a piece of trim in the car was also improperly reinstalled. Because I already paid, I called them back to say the original issue was not fixed and there is a new issue as well. I even took the time to research a simpler solution for the original technical issue that I know would work (something that you should not have to do as a customer). Young refused to follow the simple directions for solving the original issue unless -- and I am not making this up -- I was physically standing right next to the car and pointing at it. He begrudgingly agreed to address the new issue that they caused. When I dropped off the car the second time, out of nowhere, he warned me not to call any police, lawyers or unions. This was very concerning to me because I had been respectful and understanding of their mistake and said *nothing* of the sort. What this tells me is that this is not the first time that they caused damage to someone's car. It was very unprofessional, and it was at that point that I never wanted to come back to this business. I also showed him the trim issue, but he laughed at me for suggesting it was wrong. I was confused and didn't push the issue, but I later looked at older pictures of the car and saw that they really did reinstall it incorrectly! Fortunately, the new "issue" ended up being a minor setting change in the car during reassembly, so there was no damage done there. I was not able to test the leak diagnosis until it rained again, but Young's confident solution there also proved to be completely wrong. Overall, it was a complete waste of money and time. The level of professionalism at this shop is a far cry from what I have experienced at other shops mere feet away from this one. I do not recommend Japanese Auto Tech. read more

I hate having to find car repair shops because I always assume I will be ripped off and lied to. I'm so happy I found Japanese Auto Tech. First I brought in my Infiniti after taking it to Wolf Foreign Auto for many years. Wolf can never seem to keep an appointment time and is always overly busy so I wanted to switch. Young and his team were very helpful and changed my oil for much less than Wolf. They also mentioned my last oil change from Wolf probably didn't use the best synthetic oil so I'm happy to know I'm getting the right stuff now. Our old Toyota Sequoia also had an issue recently where the driver side windows would not close. Came here again and it was fixed in a few hours with a very thorough explanation as to what was fixed. I was also alerted of a recall on the car's airbags and Young explained to me exactly how to get it fixed so I'm getting ready to do that now! I highly recommend this team! read more

I made hot green tea (they had a tea -area), and settled on their very comfortable couch . As I was about to get started reading my magazine, they announced that the service was completed . Been going here for probably about 14 years but there seems to be a new owner. I asked about Young and he said that "he might be coming back" both times but I thought that was strange. I figured he was probably just saying that the second time I went in as he probably didn't want to lose business from the old regulars. I can understand that but Young was my guy and I'd prefer and honest answer than to just lead me on. Got a routine oil change the first time I went in and then the next time I needed a "check engine light" remedied for a smog check. He said that diagnosing warning lights can take hours but I thought it was just connecting up with the hand diagnostic computer which is how everyone was doing it on reviews for my car and model. I heard you could buy those at Auto Zone in fact. But, I wouldn't know where to get the part, install it, etc. so just took it here. Work was fast but I'll probably go elsewhere. I was visiting a friend in San Diego over the weekend. I figure I get an oil change while I'm at it before I drive back up to the bay. He recommended me to this shop. I didn't really ask why. I came a bit late. But he still took in my car. He could of just given me an oil change like any other place and let me be on my way. But instead he found some foreseeable future problems and showed me while explaining how this would be a problem down the line. He was 100% honest. Didn't ask to leave my car to fix it. He wrote down the problems he saw so I wouldn't forget and as proof Incase I brought my car back to the dealership. He gave me some advice. And never asked for anything in return. Young and his team are honest, straight forward, and efficient-no added bells and whistles and no trying to sell you more than what you need. He always tells me what I do and more importantly, what I do not need to get done which for a car shop, is super important. I had an issue with my shocks and tires and went to different repair shops for quotes including the Honda auto shop, and they always ended up telling me I needed so much more work done on my car. I went there today to have both control lower arms removed and replaced. I got there at 2 pm and they advised that there might not be enough time to perform everything including alignment. Nevertheless they still accommodated me. I told them I was going to be driving to San Francisco later in the day. They finished the job with time to spare. The price was great too.
