I was going to a play at Beverly Hills High School so I planned on eating here and then the drive would be without freeway driving and I wouldn't have to stress about being backed up and short on time. I had a reservation for 5:30 when they opened and they seated me a few minutes early. My server came immediately offering water and asking about my drink order. I was brought my iced tea quickly. From there, I listened to him recite the specials of the day and that's what I ended up ordering. For an appetizer, I got stuffed fried squash blossoms. The flowers were stuffed with chopped mushrooms, lighted coated, and deep fried and served with a great sauce. It was excellent. For the main course I got the 16 ounce filet with bone on and the brussels sprouts side. Both were specials for the evening. The steak was cooked perfectly and was blue and the sprouts were quite creatively cooked. The leaves were removed separately and then deep fried for a brief time just to give them a crisp. They were served with kimchee which gave the sprouts a very nice, spicy flavor. I almost finished all the sprouts but it was too much for one person. The only let down was the signature butterscotch pudding with salted caramel. The caramel wasn't salted very much. I guess I expect everyone to have the same taste for salt as I do. I have no complaints about this place. The poor reviews surprise me. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and happy. The ambiance wasn't quiet but dimly lit and offered an intimate atmosphere if you want. All the food we had was great, starting from the bread! We had the soup of the day, Cesar salad, halibut special and coq au vin. All delicious!! The chicken was rich and I was hoping for thighs but got legs, but the amount of chicken was enough. We also shared fries and Brussels sprouts. Have never had sprouts with kimchi and that was delicious. We ended the meal with cookies and a sundae. I went back to Jar last month for the first time since my initial visit in 2009. My experience was pretty different, in part, I'm sure, because I'm 32 now instead of 23. Jar is an upscale restaurant that's nice without being trendy, and I was still probably at least ten years younger than the average diner. Matt B. and I went for a Saturday night date, to celebrate after I'd met a major work deadline. We were able to book an 8:30 table not long in advance. The restaurant was packed at that hour, but emptied out over the course of our meal. We were the second-to-last table left in the dining room (the last was obviously a law firm summer dinner--a familiar meal to both me and my husband), after all the old people went home. I don't mind dining with old people, incidentally. I found Jar's atmosphere lively and pleasant, and I rather liked that it was relatively quiet, even when it was busy. We're used to industrial chic dining rooms these days, so the white tablecloths and warm lighting felt extra luxurious. Service was excellent. Our waiter Tomek was friendly and attentive, an outstanding server. There were a couple tiny mix-ups when our food came, and he handled them smoothly. We ended up with some extra sauce and an extra side on the house, with almost no delay in the sauces and sides we'd ordered. We brought our own wine and paid the corkage, but we started our night with a round of cocktails. Jar's cocktails are in the $16 to $19, and I wouldn't particularly recommend them. They're not bad, just not as interesting or well executed as the craft cocktails you get in the new hip spots with the uncomfortable communal seating. I had The Criminal, a refreshing, sweet highball of Yola mezcal, strawberry rhubarb jam, and lime. Matt had the Serengeti, another highball with Bulleit bourbon, muddled ginger, lemon, and candied ginger syrup. Sort of like a Penicillin but a bit weak and watery. The food was solid, starting with good white bread and butter. We ordered oysters on the half shell and crab deviled eggs as appetizers, and both were great. The oysters came garnished with radish and chives, served on ice with lemon wedges and a black pepper ponzu sauce. They were fresh, and I liked the flavorful ponzu. I also quite enjoyed the crab deviled eggs, which were supple and tasty and easy to gobble down--Matt doesn't eat crab or eggs, so I put away all five of them on my own. I remembered not loving Jar's signature pot roast, so we decided to skip the braises and go for some steak and scallops. We ordered the prime rib-eye, on the rare side of medium rare, and this was a juicy 14-ounce steak, tender and red with a lovely sear. We got it with green peppercorn sauce, and that was nice, as were the creamy horseradish and tamarind, which came for no apparent reason. The scallops were good, if not exceptional, and I thought they were kind of overpriced at something like $42 for three scallops with no side (they were a special, so we didn't see the price until the check came). We had the lobster béarnaise with the scallops, and that worked pretty well. All sides seem to come a la carte, and we opted for french fries and sautéed pea tendrils, and got a freebie of brussels sprouts. The fries were great, crispy and golden, tossed with garlic and parsley. The pea tendrils were a decent green side, sautéed with garlic. I liked the brussels sprouts too, though they were served with something Jar was calling kimchi--mild pickled cabbage, I guess, probably the whitest kimchi in Los Angeles. We had a peach turnover with vanilla ice cream for dessert, and this was great--hot and cold, tart and sweet, with plenty of crumbly pastry dough. It came highly recommended by Tomek, and he did not steer us wrong. Jar isn't the most exciting restaurant, but there's something to be said for a reliable classic chophouse with a convivial atmosphere, decent food that never changes, and stellar service. I finally knocked off this spot on my bookmark list! Made rsvps and came in on a Saturday night for our usual Hollywood nights. Table was all set for us and never waited , not even one minute of a wait. Now of course the seating is typical LA seating , but this wasn't as uncomfortable as most LA fine dining eateries , we even made new friends next to us. Our waitress was above average and gave us enough space but not so much where we thought she'd disappeared. So I look at the menu and I had my top 3 but ultimately I chose the Oxtails , he ordered the Pork chop. Our sides were the duck fried rice and mashed potatoes. While waiting for our food, we ordered speciality cocktails ( I don't remember which ones LOL) Either way they were allllllll good! So food comes and I dig in. My oxtails were by far THEE best oxtails I ever had!!! One of my wife and my favorites. I have tried so many of the entrees. Not a clinker in any of them. Great service from a professional wait staff. Every time with different wait staff they know their specials. Place runs like a Swiss watch Suzanne come around when she is not in the kitchen to actually find out from the customers how they like their food. She shows a real interest in her customers. The food at Jar is really good if you are looking for a good steak house. Jar is a pricey place but worth it. Roasted Beets, arugula, roquefort, balsamic vinaigrette, Half Dozen Oysters on the half shell, black pepper ponzu, and tempura battered asparagus were delicous. My favorites were the filet mignon, rib eye, and special catch of the day which was some fish but I forgot the name. These item come with yummy sauces too.. The decor and ambiance is second to none - fancy, but not intimidating which the outside doesn't really hint to. The service was a little impatient, possibly because it was the end of the evening (930pm), but regardless if you can't give service to an empty restaurant when can you? This was reflected in my tip. We had an overall good experience since the service negative was offset by the Bloomspot coupon in hand. I'll round up to 4 from a 3.5 Chef Suzanne Tracht, I expected you to blow me away and cause me to fall deeply in love....but something fell flat. How now brown cow... can be so spendy, and yet so average food?! I am a big fan of this nice restaurant's simple but sophisticated decor modeled after the 60's. The nice wood paneling all throughout, warm tones, and the simple lines from the lamps awed me. However, I cannot echo the same for its food. I wouldn't recommend dining here in jeans, is my subtle hint. And, for as nice the digs, all swankily put-together, in all, tis a shame I found the food just a wee above average. The 'frites' were definitely eye-popping delicious and what we all hope a fry could be: flavorful, not greasy to the tongue, wonderful color, crisp, light, and fluffy.. check and check! Some members of our party ordered off the large offering of various steaks, and others seafood. Honestly, it was just OK. I'm not sure I would consider a repeat visit. There is just too much out there in Los Angeles... When the menu price-point is set above average, expectations in taste grow even more exponential. Entrees are standard portions. Done! Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was delicious. Moist, pull apart, flavorful pieces of deliciousness from plate to palate. BTIEA material? Not so much. I came here with my best friend, and they booked us for a 5:30PM reservation. I wondered why they didn't have any availability by the time 6:30PM came around and there were only 4 other tables in the entire restaurant seated. Why Jar, why? Some highlights from our meal: -The banana cream pie - the cream was fluffy and delicious, not too sweet! The crust was clearly fresh and handmade. -Butterscotch pudding: My bestie ordered this one. As far as pudding goes, it was definitely one of the best I've had. -Butter lettuce: But really, how could they mess this up. -Pot roast: It was good and was a pretty substantial portion. Came to Jar for the second time this evening. This time it was for mom's 79th birthday. As a party of eight, they had no problem seating us. The waitstaff was very attentive, never letting a glass of wine or water go empty throughout the entire meal. I mentioned that we were a party of eight so it's not hard to imagine that we ordered a good portion of what they offer. The standouts were the pork chop. It was among the best I'd ever tasted... the duck fried rice... the oysters and the pot roast. Also great we're the mashed potatoes, onion rings, wedge salad and apple salad. The list goes on. Exquisite. A+ food -- "Best lamb shank I've ever had," says fellow diner -- and A+ service. The whole experience was great. The place has a cozy, almost old Hollywood feel, while also managing to be contemporary and very agreeable. Fairly quiet too, which is important. The bar area seems to be where the action is. But even out on the fringes we had a great time. My pot roast was fall-off-the-bone fantastic. We had sides of mashed potato -- wonderful -- and duck fried rice, which was so tasty that, if it wouldn't be considered too bizarre, I'd gladly bathe in, eating it as I go. I'm not sure what the theme of the restaurant is, other than meat. Maybe gluttony. But that's good enough for me. I gorged like a prize hog and came away satiated. Did I leave room for dessert? You betcha. A tiny corner of my bloated stomach was left vacant for something sweet. I'm nothing if not a planner. We shared a flourless chocolate cake and thought it was amazing. Came here on the day after Valentine's Day and it was PACKED. Thank god we had reservations, but we still had to wait. Upon walking through the doors, I noticed the decor wasn't as elegant as other places I've been to in Beverly Hills. It reminded me of a cross between a diner and 90s house with the low hanging round ceiling lamps and wooden walls. Also, one of the first things that stuck out to me was that the restaurant was a much older crowd of Caucasians. The average age was probably mid fifties to sixties, so we definitely stuck out like a sore thumb lol. However all of those things didn't bother me because I only cared about the quality of the food. We started out with the crab cakes and green bean salad with prosciutto and tataki mushrooms. The appetizers were good, but I didn't like that they only gave two measly pieces of prosciutto in the salad. Like come onnnn. My bf got the prime filet which he liked; but it was overlooked he said (he asked for a medium rare). I ordered the pot roast since it popped up on a lot of pics, along with the mashed potatoes. The pot roast was good but I can't say it was more special than the pot roast I've had at less pricey restaurants. The mashed potatoes were addicting, but then again it's hard to screw up mashed potatoes lol (all u need is butter). Suzanne Tracht is at the top of her game with Jar. I initially took my wife for Valentine's Day last year and returned this year for my daughter's birthday. The pork chop I had keeps getting better. It is unsurpassed and grilled to perfection. As a grilling enthusiast I know a thing or two about grilling. They are known for their pot roast which is tender enough to cut with a fork. They have a nice selection of specially prepared sauces to accompany their meats. Especially their bearnaise sauce is excellent. I have been to top notch steak houses and experienced sauces that taste liked they were purchased from wal mart. The service is very attentive and efficient. I was happy to tip Jessica B. for such friendly and knowledgeable service. For me it is an extra plus when my server has an intimate and detailed knowledge of the food. Their signature deserts chocolate pudding and banana cream pie rise to the destination. The restaurant is one large room with a side bar which makes for an intimate setting. With so many other great restaurants in LA, this one is overhyped and I would never go back. We went for Valentines which was $300 prefix. Another 100+ on wine & cappucinos, and the final bill was $500. You would expect a great meal and experience for this, right? Wrong!! First, the ambience looks like an empty event hall. There were no aisles for the waiters to travel through so they squeezed past our table on both sides the entire night. Second, our waiter had minimal skills, and with a limited prefix menu, had difficulty answering questions or gracingbys with his presence. Third, the menu itself included options for half bottles of wine, but when we went to order, we were told that was never provided and they didn't want to change the menu after it was printed. They also ran out of oysters - on VANLENTINE'S - before 7pm. And there absolutely is not a pastry chef. The dessert options were grocery store products, either red velvet cake with no flavor and no cream, cheese, or a dried out cute little chocolate heart, again with bad texture and flavor. Jar. Never disappoints, consistently good, nostalgic. There's something about Jar that feels comfortably chic, modern, and interesting. It's the terrazzo of food here in LA. Something about it reminds me of Chasen's (if you don't know it, look it up). It compels me to wear a suit. Design-wise; Cool, hip, seventies Trousdale. The joint has depth. The food-- delightful, good, simply built with integrity and authenticity. Consistent! Pot roast .. my go to and it rocks! Banana cream pie, tomato soup, etc etc. well plated and prepared. Jar is a bit more "fine dining" than A.O.C. or Lucques. Jar has the white table cloths, wood galore (actually an incredibly beautiful space!) The food was red meat heavy as far as main dishes go. Sadly we weren't impressed with their DineLA menu, so much so that neither my husband or I ordered from it. I went with a salad, fried clams, and purple yams (after asking the waitress her choice between creamed spinach and purple yams) The hubs ordered the Coq au Vin. He was in heaven from bite one. I enjoyed my food, but was a little wishful that the salmon had been available so I could have ordered that instead. I enjoyed the salad the most, then was the fried clams which were pretty perfect, especially paired with a housemaid cocktail sauce and garlic tartar sauce. The yams were too much for me. Very thick and heavy on the palate. I had a hard time chewing/swallowing these and found them to be utterly sweet, almost like a dessert. And while I would have liked to have tried dessert here, after ordering and eating these, I had no room or desire. read more

Service was great and drinks were delicious: order the Bug Juice! Food was just ok for me. We ordered the Deviled eggs. It is different from most deviled eggs I've tried. Had a hint of horseradish kick to it. Not too bad. To our fortune, our server hit the wrong button on the computer screen and out came a dish of mussels. Fantastic flavors. I say, if you're going to order steak here, stick with the Rib eye or T-bone. It's juicier and tender. I had the Skirt Steak, flavorful, but wasn't the best pieces of meat. Friend had the burger patty type meat topped with caramelized onions and sunny side up eggs. She hated it. And she definitely made it known, but not to the server. Other than the word "apple" being in the name, there was no apple flavor in the salad. The asparagus was asparagus and the onion rings were delicious. But what should have been the star of the show, the rib eye steak was below average. Instead of the usual rib eye shaped like South America, we had something else. I first came to Jar about 10 years ago when my friend invited me to her birthday celebration here. That's when I first tried their remarkable signature pot roast. I was so impressed with the food and ambiance that I took someone here to celebrate his birthday. Tonight I decided to order take out to celebrate another birthday. (September is a busy birthday month) There was an unfortunate glitch in which the restaurant didn't receive my YelpEat24 order, but the restaurant was very nice and accommodating in spite of the mistake. I ordered two orders of the pot roast accompanied by carrots and onions along with creamy horseradish. For sides, I ordered the mashed potatoes which were exceptional, the creamed corn which was delicious, and the creamed spinach. I also loved the sourdough bread which was included with the meal. Great meal. Food and service was amazing. Can't wait to go back. Everything we ordered was perfect: deviled crab eggs, shrimp and lobster cakes, wedge salad w/thousand island, rib-eye steak, scallops, and mashed potatoes. And for dessert, chocolate pudding and banana cream pie. read more

This has been our favorite restaurant for years and sadly because of the overall experience tonight we probably won't be returning. The services was subpar for a restaurant of this caliber and for a great chef like Susan. Without going into detail the dinner was late not well prepared and our waiter never checked on us. the manager was in over her head and when approached said she would take care of it than disappeared and never checked on us leaving the hostess to deal with our unhappiness. And there were only three tables outside hardly overwhelming. they did nothing to make up for all of this not even an apology and I go there almost weekly and supported them through the pandemic. read more

Expect white table cloths and white haired customers. Came in once for my birthday, got sat an hour later than the reservation time. I couldn't help but feel that because we weren't as ...distinguished (age-wise) as the other customers we didn't received the same level of attention and warmth since the staff probably assumed we weren't tipping as much. Jar makes excellent tasty delicious food, the ingredients are fine quality, the food comes hot and packed nicely- they offer specials which have also been really good-- from fresh salmon & shrimp to steaks veggies & salads it's classic yet creative - they clearly make a huge effort to do it right and is definitely worth it to order and support this local small independent restaurant. i encourage you too as well, plus it will help save jobs & keep our restaurants open read more

Perfect service, food, preparation and ambiance. I think they need heaters for the outside dining but we had a great time regardless. I don't get the 2-3 star reviews other people are giving. Oh yeah the margarito was awesome. The jar manhattan and other drink my friend got wasn't as good. read more

An LA classic - come here for meat. Char sui pork chop, duck fried rice and a Jar Manhattan is one of the best meals you can have.

Don't waste your time at this restaurant, very rude and arrogant and the waiters are lazy. No need to doubt what I said, I swear to God, they have no apologies for making guests wait double the time read more

I had the best dinner! I sat at the bar because I was eating by myself and I'm an awkward turtle. The kimchi brussel sprouts were delicious. The skirt steak was beyond reproach. Everyone was so nice and I really enjoyed my experience. read more

Consistently Great! The cocktails are terrific. Try the gin gimlet served by two very helpful and friendly bartenders. We shared the pear salad that was just enough for two and the duck fried rice is a real treat. Not greasy at all and the best this side of Shanghai and you don't have to brave the flu. We also really like the lemon grass chicken which has a bit of heat and the chicken is moist and tender. The flank steak was cooked perfectly and spread out on the plate looked like it was right out of a magazine. The banana cream pie was a nice way to end the meal and was not conventional in anyway. Just creamy and delicious. After all these years Jar continues to deliver top notch wonderful food and ambiance. read more
