    Winter tasting menu 2023
    Hiromi R.

A long-anticipated visit to the famous Jean-Georges. The restaurant is nestled in the well-known Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills. The interior is beautifully decorated with high ceilings and chandeliers, with the bar to the left and a dimly-lit, romantic dining room to the right. The restaurant is rather spacious, with booths by the walls, and tables in the center. Service was excellent. Staff was attentive and always made sure that my glass was full. She checked in whenever necessary and it did not feel over bearing. It was just the right amount of attention. I wanted to try a little bit of everything, so I went with their Winter Tasting Menu, without the wine pairing ($180). Course 1: toasted egg yolk with caviar By far, my favorite of the six courses. There were three egg yolks sandwiches between two, lightly toasted crisps, topped with a bed of caviar on the top. Flavor was light, well-balanced, and it had me craving for more. Fantastic little dish to kick off the meal. Course 2: cured sea trout with butternut juice lime sauce. This was similar to salmon sashimi slices, made out to look like a rose, with sauce on the bottom. Again, a fairly light dish and it had a hint of lemongrass. I enjoyed this dish. Course 3: cheese ravioli with basil butter Parmesan. Sadly, course 3 is where the experience started to normalize. It was cheese ravioli that was just, well, cheese ravioli. It didn't blow my mind, it was exactly what the dish described. Course 4: striped bass with fragrant coconut juice A little bland and could've used a bit more flavor. The fish also felt a bit too overdone to me, as I usually like my bass a bit softer and falling-off-my-knife texture. Again, will probably forget about this dish after writing about it. Course 5: toasted wagyu beef tenderloin I asked for medium rare but the small portion of meat was presented to me in medium. Despite this, this was very good, and the accompanying vegetables were also flavorful. Broccoli was slightly salty. Course 6: molten chocolate cake Very kind that the restaurant included birthday wishes on my dessert. It was a molten chocolate cake that was, indeed, a molten chocolate cake, with nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, it was a good experience, however I will likely not return. For this price, it was to be expected, if not better, but now that I've crossed Jean-Georges off of my list, I will likely be taking my dollars to a different fine-dining restaurant. I think it's worth a visit, but should not be on top of must-visit list. But glad I went!

A beautiful restaurant at the happening location of Beverly hills. The restaurant is inside the Waldorf Astoria hotel. The interiors look immaculate, warm, and welcoming. It was a vendor sponsored event, and so I got to taste their 4 course meal. The service is top-notch, very courteous, and attentive. The rooftop visit is a must, do not miss the breathtaking view of Hollywood from there. The food tasted very good, high quality and very fresh. Definitely recommend it if you are going to take your family or friends for an upscale dining place. The salad and the butternut squash soup was delicious.

Beautiful restaurant. We had dinner here while staying at the Waldorf. We have two kids so we didn't want to leave the hotel to eat anywhere else. Usually restaurants in the hotel are not special but the food here was quite good. It was expensive but it was expected. Service was great. I was hesitated to try because reading so many negative reviews but I'm glad we decided to dine here.

Butternut squash soup-- EXCELLENT, a must have!
    Angie A.

I will start by saying: the BEST BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP we have ever had! It was savory with bits of crunch from sunflower seeds and just the right subtle amount of sweetness; perfection. While the menu changes often, you should definitely try if available. Other than that though, everything else was just okay, nothing I would specifically return for as a foodie. The mushroom crusted salmon was cooked perfectly though. Brussel sprout side (balsamic glaze with avocado pieces) was also worth ordering again. The service was SOO SLOW though, wow. Good convenient place to eat if you are staying at the Waldorf visiting, but if you live here, time and money is better spent on the rooftop-- better menu in my opinion, and obv can't beat the vibe/view.

    French toast and avocado toast

We tried several of their breakfast items on multiple days during our stay; both sit down and breakfast take out to eat in room. Nothing spectacular to note about the breakfast menu items except that they all tasted good (avo toast, egg sandwich, oatmeal, pancakes, French toast...). Expensive, but you're paying for the name and the hotel it's in. We went for dinner and tried the tasting. We had high expectations since we have been to the Jean-Georges in NY. It started great with hubby's cocktail and my mocktail. Toasted egg yolk topped with caviar was amazing!! My toddler was fighting over the rest of my half lol from there, food went downhill. Roasted wagyu beef tenderloin (medium) was a tad dry. The rest of the dishes were ok. Not worth the price, but they offered us a 50% off on everything except liquor when we checked-in days earlier. Without it, we definitely would not have went.

    Lava cake

We dined here right before COVID hit. While we were waiting for our table to be set up, we enjoyed the nice ambiance and relaxing piano music that was being played. I had the red snapper and got a scale in my first bite so I just took off the skin and didn't get to enjoy the crust. My fiance got a steak and it was pretty good, but I've had better elsewhere. My fiance told me the molten lava cake was claimed to have been invented by Jean-Georges, so we just had to order it even though we were pretty full already. My second stomach really enjoyed it. Bill was our server and I felt like he just did the bare minimum for us. For a place like Jean-Georges, I expected exceptional service. That's what the table next to us received, but we got none of that. We didn't even get the little dessert box that other tables got. Sadly, the ambiance, decor, and floral arrangements were more memorable than the food.

Flawless from start to finish. The hotel looked beautiful with the holiday decorations. Classy, sophisticated, and elegant. Restaurant was lovely - quiet, cozy and peaceful. The server was friendly and accommodating. Enjoyed a light breakfast - fresh and perfectly made. Easily one of the most enjoyable breakfasts I've had in LA.

    Course 2: Madai Ceviche
    Linda K.

We chose the seasonal menu called Taste of Spring, which was $180 a person with 6 courses. The first course was called Toasted Egg Yolk Caviar, made with Kaviari Kristal caviar. The caviar tasted amazing. The eggs were perfectly soft but not runny. This was the best course of the night. The second course was Madai Ceviche, with rhubarb juice, red onion, and avocado. Madai is a red seabream fish from Japan. This course tasted great - it was light and delicious, but nothing particularly special about it. It tasted like an upper end sushi restaurant's yellowtail ceviche. Course 3: Spring Pea Potstickers These Spring Pea Potstickers were so tasty, but it was a little too salty for my personal preference. Course 4: Striped Bass. The striped bass is accompanied with spring garlic-lemon nage, silky fava beans and artichoke hearts. The nage broth and fava beans were amazing. The striped bass was average because the skin was overfried. The artichoke hearts had many unchewable pieces, which should not ever happen at a restaurant of this caliber. Course 5 was a roasted wagyu beef tenderloin with white asparagus and buttery hot sauce. At least that's what the menu says. The beef was very tender, as expected, but it had VERY little flavor. I don't like my beef to be seasoned much, but this beef had almost no flavor at all. The sauce was not buttery or hot, it was very citrusy. Last course, the dessert, Molten Chocolate Cake with Vanilla bean ice cream. This was amazing. The restaurant was beautiful and the service was impeccable. Compare to most other Michelin level restaurants we've partaken, most of the courses did not feel up to par.

Beautiful restaurant! Always love to come back here. Chill and friendly service as always! tried their tasting menu, The toasted egg yolk with caviar is pretty good! (reasonable price in my opinion). valet parking at the hotel entrance.

Calamari with frothy citrus chili dip

We were in the neighborhood and decided to check out the new Waldorf-Astoria and grab lunch at Jean-George BH. The hotel has a boutique feel and Jean-George's ambience feels like a typical dining room in a high-end hotel. It sort of lacked the pizazz of JG of Tokyo or NYC. The service was just as impeccable as any other JG locations. Our waiter took the time to make sure the poached egg in one of dishes was cooked for exactly 3 minutes per our request. The food was good but not quite as impressive as I'd expect from a JG restaurant. The complementary scones were petite but good and served with regular or lemon butter. The kale and broccoli salad with a poached egg was refreshing but a little light on flavors. The calamari was lightly battered, quickly fried and served with a frothy citrus chili dip - nicely done. The salmon with corn "pudding" was well cooked with a crispy crust but kept medium rare on the inside. The veal Milanese was a bit of letdown. A typical Milanese would be lighted fried with a fine bread crumb coating. This one had a thick and puffy batter like that of a bad tempura. The lemon meringue tart was average and the Meyer lemon sorbet seemed a bit redundant rather than complementary. As the birthplace of the molten chocolate cake, JG naturally served an excellent rendition of the dessert.

    Lemon drop.

Outstanding on so many levels! From the greeting to our good bye 5*. We were well-greeted by the manager Greg for our 8Pm reservation. Greg showed up to our table & was happy to have us back. Our server William was so attentive, knowledgeable and always smiled which is very important to me. He was genuine & super competent in his profession. Jorge at the bar makes a delicious lemon drop cocktail. I had the roasted salmon and the Caesar salad was the best I have ever eaten. The sunset was literally a bonus on this perfect evening. Shout out to Adriane too. He was such a sweetheart!

I rate the tasting menu with wine pairing at Jean-Georges as one of the top five meals of my life, and that's saying a lot. My friend had been recommended Jean-Georges by a huge restaurant connoisseur who made that same proclamation, so we had it on our list of things to do for a while. When the DineLA deal popped up, we immediately made reservations at Jean-Georges. This was not like other DineLA menus where it's just a subset of the regular menu that's actually just a small discount, this was the full tasting menu with wine pairing that's normally offered, at a heavily discounted price ($99 instead of $145 for the tasting menu, $70 instead of $110 for the wine pairing). TASTING: Sea Urchin & Caviar (Crispy Potatoes, Yuzu and Creme Fraiche) Hamachi and Little Gem Salad (Avocado Sprouts and Soy Chili Dressing) Pumpkin Ravioli (Pamesan and Amaretti) Icelandic Cod (Nut and Seed Crust, Sweet and Sour Jus) Waygu Beef Skirt Steak (Silky, Glazed and Roasted Carrots, Miso-Mustard Sauce) Pear Bourdaloue (Toasted Almond Sorbet) The meal started with caviar, setting the stage for the rest of the evening - all the stops were being pulled out for this tasting. The soy chili on the hamachi was to die for. But the pumpkin ravioli was the real stand out for me - it was hands down the best ravioli that I've ever had, and even though it was just a small portion, it was so flavorful and rich that it was completely satisfying. That one thing made the meal for me. By the time the cod and steak came out I was already getting a bit full, which is perhaps why those are also the menu items that are the least memorable to me, but believe me, everything was good. WINE PAIRING: Laurent-Perrier Brut Rose Champagne 2016 Kistler Vineyards "Vine Hill Ranch" Chardonnay 2015 Dr Loosen Urziger Wurzgarten 2017 Domaine Ott Chateau de Selle Rose 2014 Ashes & Diamonds "Grand Vin No 1" Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Elio Perrone "Bigaro" Moscato & Brachetto Blend We hesitated on the wine pairing for a second, as at some restaurants a pairing is just a "taste" but that was not the case here. Each pour was almost a full glass of wine, making this a ridiculous deal. We loved the sommelier, who was not at all pretentious, but very soft-spoken, humble and kind. He genuinely wanted us to enjoy each of the wines, which he was clearly very proud of having selected. He, and the wines, were what really made this experience stand out, and I'm so glad that we decided to go for it. This was a full experience meal that took us close to three hours, but despite the fact that we were the last ones there past 11 on a Sunday night, I didn't feel rushed at all. We were so immersed in our experience that I didn't even notice that everyone else had left. Because I really couldn't eat another bite by the time the dessert came out, they packed me a to go box which is the fanciest to go box I've ever seen (which I kept and have on display), and even threw some Waldorf Astoria chocolates in the box. They really take care of you here and make the meal special for you, and that, along with the beautiful and dramatic decor, are what make the experience. The delicious food and wine is just the icing on the cake.

Jean-George's service is top notch. The ambiance is upscale & pleasant. It was my first time there, so I took a seat at the bar. I was greeted by a beautiful brunette bartender. She recommended the raspberry Bellini, which was a 10/10. Look forward to coming back.

The caviar omakase is the must order thing here. Everything is very small bites, but if you are mostly there for drinks then à la carte is a good option. We ended up at the Maybourne Bar in the Maybourne hotel, a solid B+ lobby bar that I'd visit again under similar circumstances. The space was attractive but the vibe was strange, if not uncomfortable. Just weirdly bright lighting and a different crowd from the usual L.A. bar scene (hotel, Beverly Hills). It was pretty quiet at 10:00 on a Saturday night, and we were able to grab seats at the bar. Service was fast and polite. We ordered a Midas Touch and a Big in Japan, both decent cocktails that cost a full $30 apiece. The Midas Touch was a colorful spicy margarita with El Tesoro Maybourne Edition Reposado, Empirical Ayuuk, Grand Marnier Louis Alexandre, saffron, lemon, and honey. Big in Japan was a Gold Rush variation with Hibiki Harmony, sudachi honey, lemon, sansho pepper, and yuzu bitters. There are better, more interesting cocktail bars all over L.A., but I'd recommend the Maybourne Bar if you're staying at the hotel or otherwise looking for an upscale bar in downtown Beverly Hills. You can get food, too, though most of it seems to involve caviar.

After finishing the Dinner for Two, which really showcased the quality of the meat, we decided to split a cheesesteak since "that's what they're known for." When it arrived, it looked incredible. Unfortunately, that's where the excitement ended for me. The meat tasted oddly oily. I'm not sure if it was the cut, the preparation, or even the cheese, but it came across as heavy and greasy compared to the beautifully simple, clean flavors of the steak dinner. It was also underseasoned, and I found myself tasting the sesame seeds on the bread more than the filling itself. The chips were fresh and crunchy at first, but they lost their texture surprisingly quickly, so eat those immediately. Overall, I absolutely loved the steaks, sides, and cocktails, and I'll happily be back for those. But as for the cheesesteak? Once was more than enough.

Matu is a dream for meat lovers, with a menu centred entirely around Australian wagyu. Nothing…read moreshowcases that commitment better than the Matu dinner ($87 per person; minimum 2 persons), a multi-course meal that highlights different cuts of the cow in every single dish. Things begin with a 24-hour bone broth shooter, looking like a glass of gravy but tasting like concentrated umami. Rich, warm, and deeply comforting, it's remarkable how delicious it is despite containing only broth. The steak tartare follows with freshly chopped beef, egg yolk, and what the menu describes as a "Japanese accent," possibly togarashi. Whatever the seasoning blend is, it works beautifully. The tartare is incredibly flavourful despite its minimalist presentation. Thin, lightly toasted crostini accompany it without overpowering the beef, though I did ask for extra slices just to finish every bite. The eight-hour braised beef cheek was one of my favourite courses. So tender and moist that you could practically eat it with a spoon, the richness is balanced by a silky celeriac purée that ties everything together beautifully. It's the kind of dish that immediately makes you want another serving. Even their '47' salad leans heavily into the restaurant's beef-first philosophy, featuring more steak than greens. The 3-ounce centre-cut filet was impressively tender for such a lean cut, and although it arrived rarer than I'd typically order, it worked perfectly. At Matu, diners aren't asked how they'd like their steak cooked. The kitchen prepares it to the chef's specifications, trusting the quality of the beef and their technique. As for the romaine leaves underneath, they're coated in a signature dressing that tastes remarkably similar to Caesar, despite being made without dairy or eggs, then finished with a generous showering of Parmigiano. After all that beef, you'd think sharing a 12-ounce ribeye would feel excessive. Somehow, it didn't. The steak is prepared simply, allowing the quality of the wagyu to speak for itself, with crispy grilled broccolini providing a garlicky contrast alongside it. A small dish of salt is presented at the beginning of the meal, though Matu intentionally keeps the seasoning restrained. Personally, I appreciated the lighter touch and never felt the need to add more. Dessert arrives in the form of Scott's flourless chocolate cake ($12), dense and rich without being overly sweet beyond a dusting of powdered sugar. After an entire menu devoted to beef, I almost found myself jokingly wondering whether wagyu somehow made its way into dessert too.
