This is our go-to spot to eat in Leander. The food is great, tons of it for the money, the service is fast and attentive, and the margaritas are stellar! (Only order one grande, or you'll be tipsy before you hit the parking lot.) We've been coming here for 2.5 years and probably eat here once a month. Fajitas for one will easily feed two people, so that also helps the pocketbook! Last meal was two beers, two margaritas, an appetizer, entrees for both, plus dessert (not to mention the doggy bags) and our check was $45ish. That's insanity! Maybe we're spoiled because we're used to Chicago prices, but we can't believe how much great food to get for so little out of pocket. Is it the finest TexMex ever? Pretty good stuff. Busy busy busy, but that's usually a good sign. Our poor waiter was awesome and running around which did let drinks get low. But not from neglect, just extremely busy. The food is good. I got the Pollo Endiablado. While I'm used to chipotle sauce being dark this one was more red which made me wonder, then I ate it and it was delicious. Rice could do without so many peas, but that's just a personal preference and again it was tasty. If you live In the area and are looking for some decent Tex Mex it's a good place. I felt compelled to review when I saw that my favorite Mexican restaurant only had 3.5 stars. My wife and I have been eating here for 3 years, and this is my experience: The service is fast and efficient, and no matter how full the parking lot(s) have been, I've always been seated immediately. The food is great. If you like Taco Bell style seasoning, this might not be the place for you. The seasoning is much more authentic Mexican than other TexMex establishments. It's definitely a small and quaint place but the service and food was great! The waiter was very attentive and careful of my father's sensitivity to certain spicy foods due to his recent surgery. Been looking for a local Mexican place and this place is right around the corner from the house so we decided to give it a try. Atmosphere - Local spot - I think it may have been an old house but it is very spacious. Chips & Salsa - Average. Good but not great. Chicken Suiza, Refried Beans & Rice - The enchiladas were STUFFED with chicken and had a great flavor. Unfortunately, the entire plate was luke-warm. I will give them another try and hope it was a fluke. The place always seems to be busy so I am sure it was not the norm. Hopefully we have found our local mexican go to spot. read more

SCENE: Leander, TX - March 4, 2009 - Our first child turns 5 today! My fist baby girl turns five. She is excited because she gets to pick any restaurant she wants for dinner! She chooses JARDIN DEL REY. My husband and I are shocked - I was fully prepared for a night at Chuck E Cheese...but it's her birthday...and I can get a margarita...so everyone's happy. The dinner goes well, my husband, our 1 year old, the birthday girl and Aunt Pammy are all there - it's a fun night (minus the 1 year old teething). Dinner is through, and I turn to the 'not-so-outgoing-and-friendly' waiter who has been serving us all night and I ask "Hey do you guys have any cake or anything...it's her birthday." I am pointing proudly to my big girl! The waiter responds something I am sure is in English, I look at him questioningly and he nods...so I assume that meant yes... Soon after I hear the tell-tale sound of spoons and clapping, knowing they intend to march to the table to sing to her. Internally I cringe a little, my 5 year old is extremely shy and I know this will almost send her over the edge, but the parade has begun so I figure, she'll get through it...and of course she buries her face behind Aunt Pammy. We all sing and I am smiling at her, thinking this might be special when she thinks back on it...Job well done Mom!! The crew leaves after the song is over - and not so friendly waiter just stands there... A few awkward moments of my husband and I trying to convince my daughter no one is staring anymore and coax her out of Aunt Pammy's back... My husband and I look to the waiter wondering why he is hovering, and I notice he has a napkin in his hand...I think " oh how sweet - he must have a little mint or treat for her". I put on my consoling mommy voice and say to my hiding 5 year old - "Honey, look up sweetheart...he brought you a surprise..." Huge innocent blue eyes finally appear, I nod my head in encouragement as she shows her face finally... The waiter then smashes the napkin in her face and she is covered in whipped cream. I'll just let that sink in... Yes - she is now covered in whipped cream. It's in her eyes, in her nose, all over her face and she is now screaming and crying in fright. I shove my sister out of the way (sorry Pam) and mommy-protection mode kicks in....I am in shock. I immediately begin wiping the cream out of her eyes, wiping her tears and telling her it's OK. I am ignoring my 1 year old who is now screaming - thankfully Aunt Pammy picks her up to calm her down...and I think my husband is still in shock - teetering between attacking the waiter and paying the bill just so we can get out. We finally get out of the restaurant - as she is exclaiming " I don't ever want to go there again. What did I do? Why did that man smash cream in my face?" My heart is breaking as I try to explain that it wasn't nice and she has every reason to be upset...and mommy is sorry... The night ends at Baskin Robbins - with Mommy and Daddy trying to salvage what's left of birthday night - (a HUGE thank you to BR because the sprinkled cone and icing flavored ice cream made everything better). We got home and she opened her presents - Daddy lay in bed with her to read her the new snake book she got - Mommy lay in bed with her and she tells me her birthday was "awesome" - except for "the rude man who smashed cream in her face." She goes to sleep smiling - and thinking about her birthday party on Friday. Mom and Dad proceed to stay up the rest of the night fuming about what we will forever refer to as "The Whip Cream Assault". Waited nearly an hour for a table one Friday night just before Christmas. I hate waiting for a table. I tried to talk my wife into giving up and going home for a baloney sammich, but she insisted we stick it out. Just another instance proving she is much smarter than me. Food was excellent. Of the bazillions of mexican and tex-mex places in and around Austin, I think this is probably the best around. Food is on a scale with Fonda San Miguel, prices are more like Taco Cabana. Who knew a random phone call to entertain myself in rush hour traffic to my friend Deb would lead to so much drama. She needed a house for lease, and being a Realtor, I thought I'd help. Apparently she never really quite got what I did for a living, as she noticed 99% of my Facebook pictures are of me in various stages of drinking at venues all across the city. So we made an appointment and I went out of my comfort zone to Leander. Midway through catching up, viewing properties, and relentlessly bashing her (almost) ex-husband, we decided we were hungry. She said that her and this other gay friend of hers like to go to this little Mexican restaurant. And even though to me, the only decent Mexican food is in San Antonio where the Verizon Wireless and alcohol billboards are in Spanish, I agreed. This was Leander, after all; she said this was about as good as it gets for holes-in-the-wall. The place is tacky in a non-threatening way, with purple and turquoise colors and sombreros stapled to the walls. We grabbed a booth and both ordered the plate that came with a beef taco, a beef enchilada, a cheese enchilada, and guacamole. Oh, and a completely disgusting flat piece of tortilla covered in Velveeta. Without vomiting, I politely told her she could have mine. The guacamole was average, better than I expected. The whole thing was one big mediocre meal but the gabfest was great. The clientele scared me a bit. We were in an area that she herself described as nothing but cow crossings and people who resembled the hillbillies from Deliverance. Needless to say, I wanted to avoid all talk of her new gay music director at the Lutheran church. That's nice and all, but I had to steer the conversation back to real estate so this guy with Truck Nutz on his vehicle won't kill me. The waiter was a nice looking, tall Latino-ish guy who couldn't have cared less about us, but he kept the Diet Coke refilled. Would I go back? No. Was it God-awful? No. It is what it is. read more

The food is always delicious, especially the salsa and queso. It excites me that they have Mexican coke and the carnitas are delicious (and so are the charro beans and whatever that yummy spicy sauce is that comes with my carnitas). My only complaints are that I question Jardin's cleanliness, the carnitas are a little fatty sometimes and I'm 100% sure their tortillas aren't homemade (which is a sin when you're talking Mexican food). It's sad that Taco Cabana has better tortillas. However, the deliciousness of the carnita meat and fresh avocado mask the unpleasant preservative taste of the tortilla. Maybe I should corn next time? Oh and the enchiladas are disgusting. That being said, I gave them 4 stars because what they do well, they do it SO well. read more

Hands down, this is the cheapest, best margarita you will buy up here in Leander. I am talking a big honkin 12 oz margarita for $6. You can tell it's good because it's not loaded w/ that green crap that comes in a bottle (I won't mention it's name because it absolutely disgusts me). It actually has lime juice in the drink (whooda thunk that?) Food here is pretty damn good. I like the combos (El Cowboy or El Super Tucan) but what takes the cake is the Carnitas. Shredded pork served w/ a Tomatillo sauce w/ a spicy chile de arbol. Mmmmh hmmmm brother, it is awesome. Pipian is pretty good. My heart belongs to El Meson for pipian. (If you haven't been to El Meson, then you haven't lived...sorry) Prices are super cheap (2 can eat for $25) including drinks and still walk away happy...can't beat that. Jardin is proof that Leander can have good Tex Mex and Mexican food north of RR 620. Yes, it's located in a converted double wide, but it has a nice porch to sit in! And, if that doesn't suit your fancy, then go to Liberty Hill and they have a Jardin up there in a nice building. read more

We always enjoy our time here and I've taken way too long to write a review!! The food is reasonable for the portions you get, the meat is always tasty and the drinks are always superb. The wait staff is kind but they don't irritate you by coming by every 5 seconds to try to "earn" their tips- they have it down to a science to know when to come and when to leave you alone and they don't mind being approached either if you really need something. We are frequent flyers here and will continue to be as long as we live in the area. read more

It's been our "go to" mexican food place for 10+ years now. It was Jardin Corona (in Austin, then Cedar Park) and Jardin Del Rey when they opened it. Solid meal all the way around. I've had something from just about all parts of their menu and they've never let me down. Even the chips and salsa are some of the best. My only nit would be their wait staff. In the 10+ years I've been going there, I've had only a handful of experiences that I was not happy with. Infractions ranging rom a forgotten order to waiting on drink refills to waiter politely telling me I was a liar. But in the end, the food always makes up for it. And in the number of times i've eaten there, i can live with a handful of situations. I've also seen a lot of places come and go in this area, and Jardin is always a good choice around my house...from my picky wife to my very picky kids (3 young boys, 1 girl). read more

Jardin Corona has a location in cedar park and one on pond springs road, and also has Jardin Del Rey in Leander. The Leander location has a different name, but it's essentially the same restaurant. Being the same as Jardin Corona, Jardin Del Rey is also worthy of my highest praise for their excellent menu, quality food, and low prices. The leander location has a nicer atmosphere, though. Instead of being part of a strip-mall like the 2 "Corona" locations, the Del Rey joint is a converted house. There is outdoor seating at this location, and I love outdoor seating. The view is of 183 and the gravel parking lot, and there is some road noise, but it's still nice when you just want to be outside. So in addition to all 3 "Jardin" locations being the best damn tex-mex around, this location adds a somewhat nicer location. If yelp allowed reviewers to give just ONE place a sixth star, mine would go to Jardin Del Rey. Cheap, simple, tasty tex-mex cannot get any better. Edit: I thought of something that could make the Jardin restaurants better: fresh tortillas like Chuy's makes. But still a solid 5 stars for Jardin! read more

Wasn't super excited about the visit, first thing I saw walking in was a place full of people without masks. I haven't been out much lately at all. Not a lot to go out for. I decided to go treat myself a bit even though I've lost so much recently. Tried to put a tip on the bill even if it wasn't much. As I walked away I hear the guy laugh and yell my tip amount to the guy behind the counter. He looked like he was much more well off than me. So our natural assumption is that it must be good. Right? I mean, if people are always lining up to get to the place it has to be good. I like the atmosphere. Yeah, it's got a dive/greasy spoon vibe to it, which is far from a bad thing. Growing up in central Texas you come to recognize that some of the best Tex-Mex food around comes from places like that. The problem is that the food is really bland. Not bad, just... bland. There isn't enough flavor to be offensive. It's just plates full of tasteless matter. It looks good, it just tastes like nothing. It's very disappointing because the drinks were good and the service was alright, it's just... a slighter longer drive gets me to some of the best Tex-Mex in the world. So... It's your typical 'hole in the wall' place, where the atmosphere is good and the food is better. It's small, which makes it quaint. Make sure to have a Grande Margarita or Grande Cerveza! Salsa and queso is as good as it gets. My usual order is the Chimichanga Jardin w/ beef!!! read more

After looking at how many stars this place received I had to check it out as it was just down the road. However, I wish I would have stayed home and ate from my neighbors garbage can. Walking into the place just before dinner service, me and my gal pal were seated immediately, this was a good start but it didn't last long. Her and I enjoyed a nice conversation about fashion while we looked over the menu when we noticed that we hadn't seen the waiter/waitress yet. We pulled out our phones at this point. Ten minutes later the waitress came to our table and we ordered our drinks(two bud lights in a bottle) and food(chicken quesadilla and a chimichanga). The restaurant at this point was just about to capacity. A cute couple walked in and sat behind us in a booth. They were almost immediately greeted by our waitress and their drink orders were taken. A few minutes pass and the couple gets their drinks. I'm not sure how this could happen, the waitress literally has to walk by our table to get to them. Seven minutes passed before we got our beers and chips and salsa. The salsa consisted of canned tomatoes that were thrown in a blender, had some salt and pepper mixed in, then a tablespoon of lime juice to cut the taste. It was like fermented Chipotle pico de gio without any cilantro or spice. Thirty minutes later the couple behind us gets their food, and it looks a hell of a lot more complicated than putting chicken and cheese between two tortillas or deep frying a burrito. We are sitting there, empty bottles and starting to get pissed as people who came in after us were already served or began to get served. If there was any crap talking about the service from the two of us, it began here. After another fourteen minutes we were served our long fifty-four minute anticipated meals. The food looked really good... Have you ever had canned chicken mixed in with Velveeta cheese then put between tortillas? I have, I remember the college life, but I've never had it served at a restaurant. Have you ever had fried rice that tastes like Chinese food at a Mexican restaurant? Me neither but it was the best thing on the plate. I honestly didn't want to eat the quesadilla because the cheese and meat combo was so strong but I was hungry enough at this point I managed to get about half of it down. My gal pals chimichanga was under cooked but she ate around the center. She said her beans were terrible and recooked to many times, but she liked the rice. We asked for the checked and waited another ten minutes for that to arrive. All in all we left Jardin Del Rey after spending an hour and thirty minutes there, had two beers, ate the worst food we've ever had and the second to worst service we've ever encountered.
