We stopped by Los Reyes Mexican Restaurant for a quick lunch after running an errand and were so glad we did! We found this place while browsing for a quick bite, and wow--what a great find. The food was absolutely delicious--so flavorful and fresh! I'm visiting from out of state, and honestly, it's hard to find good Mexican food where I live, so this was such a treat. Mariana was our server, and she was wonderful--sweet, attentive, and quick to take care of us. We came at the perfect time; it wasn't busy, so we were seated right away and able to order quickly since we were on a tight schedule. The ambiance is exactly what you'd hope for in a Mexican restaurant--quaint, colorful, and rich with cultural charm. My family and I have been dining at Los Reyes for over 20 years. The restaurant is located in the large building behind P Terry's and across the parking lot from Fitness Connection and Goodwill. The restaurant has always been clean and it's nicely decorated. The owner is usually onsite. He and the staff have always welcoming. Secret it and my favorite is the Tortilla Chipotle Soup. It's moderately spicy and has shredded chicken. The soup alone is 5 stars. Their chips are always fresh and the salsa is spot on. The other dishes are excellent. We, the wife and I stopped in here after our day out. It is super close to the house and we had not been so we figured lets try it out. It has a large area, when we were there is was not busy at all but not empty either. The chips were good, and Shana said the Salsa had a kick without being too spicy. The staff was fast and we never felt like we had to wait too long for anything. We ordered Queso, first real downside, not great. In Austin you have to do better. As Shana and I talked about you can take basic queso and do something to make it yours. This was not it, it was not the worst but nothing special and not much meat added. Shana got the Camarones, a shrimp dish, and it was in her words "Solid but nothing super special" I got the chicken Fajitas and felt pretty much the same. They have a central dining area and another large seating area off to the side. We came for an early lunch. The place was kind of empty so the service we received was excellent. The waitresses were all happy and helpful. We both ordered some iced tea to start. They were brought to us so quickly. My friend wanted the Super Quesadilla. To say it was large was an under statement. She said it was the best she has ever had. I requested the Lite Lunch plate which includes a taco, enchilada, and flauta. The taco had ground beef and was okay. The flauta had all the veggies I needed. The chicken enchilada, OMG. This was the best shredded chicken enchilada I have had. Bland, boring, no passion in the most basic traditional Mexican dishes, with no real identity. Salsa taste bulk from Costco. The margaritas were insulting. Huge served with barely any alcohol in it, paid for Don Julio for an extra shot, then couldn't drink it. Tasted like all water. They didn't listed to our edits even though they were simple, and we spoke in fluent Spanish and English for no confusion. The restaurant seems like it's holding onto their last legs, but you can tell the quality of ingredients is just low low low, poor quality. This area seems to be a food desert unless you want fast food. Where are the gems? Y'all locals, start putting some passion in your food. Go explore other nicer restaurants and google their recipes and techniques online and bring it back to your restaurant. It's a Thursday night before a holiday weekend and it should be popping. At first they would not honor the $10 for $20 deal Yelp offers. They kept saying it's just $10 off. I kept saying that's not what the deal says. It doesn't even make sense to pay $10 to get $10 off. It states buy the voucher for $10 and it's worth $20. They were refusing to give my husband our food (we ordered take out) It's not until we threatened to report them to Yelp for not honoring the deal that they accepted the voucher for $20.  Not only that we've been here several times, always for takeout, and they ALWAYS forget our barracho beans!! Not sure why this place has such bad reviews. The wait staff was very attentive and our food came out promptly. We had a group of 9 on a Thursday night. They had $2 margaritas until 6pm and half priced appetizers until 7pm. Everyone loved the salsa. It had great heat and was not super chunky. The margaritas were good, especially for the price. Not sure that I would pay more than $4 for one. We ordered queso, tortillas, flautas, nachos and quesadillas. They have homemade tortillas that are really yummy. The quesadillas were probably our favorites. Get the ones with jalapenos in them. The queso was probably my least favorite. It wasn't very flavorful but the kids loved it. read more

I love me a margarita and so we stopped in for lunch and a margarita. I have never felt so unwelcomed anywhere! I got eye rolls and huffs and puffs from our waitress. Like I felt incredibly insulted. I work in food service so I'm always nice because I realize a lot of people aren't.... But I have no idea why, our waitress just seemed super annoyed with our presence. This is the first and last time we will be dining here. The food isn't even that good, so definitely not even overlooking the experience for the food. Very disappointed! read more

Austin is full of great Tex-Mex options. Austin is full of great taqueria options. And we've also got more than a few great options for more traditional Mexican food. In short, there's plenty of great Mexican food around. So, there's no reason to go someplace mediocre, much less someplace bad. We decided to visit Los Reyes in the middle of the afternoon. We were initially impressed by the variety of the menu which ran from Tex-Mex classics to some more authentic options. One surprise on the menu was the lack of queso as an appetizer (although the nachos were prepared with queso per the menu description). Since we had salsa, we were good -- although the salsa was completely devoid of any spice. Both of us came away very disappointed with our entrees, both for the taste and the execution of the entrees. I had the burrito deluxe meal, which were described as flour tortillas with fajita meat covered in queso and chili gravy served with rice and beans on the side. I got one burrito with beef and one with chicken and asked for double rice instead of beans. The fajita meat didn't have much seasoning, nor did it taste grilled. As I was eating the burritos, I thought the texture and taste was strange. I opened up the burritos and found they had a layer of refried beans, which wasn't mentioned on the menu. My dining companion had a similar experience with the Enchiladas Mexicanas. She ordered her enchiladas without tomatoes. The enchiladas came covered in tomatoes. When she mentioned this to our server, we received a "sorry" with no offer to take the dish back. Additionally, what the menu described as a topping of "white cheese" was a generous covering of cotija cheese. The truth is that the food itself is probably mediocre, but the menu descriptions don't match the food -- and there's a disconnect between the servers and the kitchen on any sort of customizing of the menu. Also, it was clear that neither of us enjoyed our food as we both left more than half. Our pleasant, but disinterested, server never picked up on this. I can literally think of no reason to return. And the lack of anyone else in the restaurant makes me think others have had a similar experience. read more

We've been coming to Los Reyes regularly for a long time. We eat out frequently and we have our favorites as many do. I'm rating Los Reyes with 5 stars for many reasons. It's a great neighborhood restaurant with good, consistent food and a good staff. Now to the details. Let's start with the salsa. It does have a kick, but it isn't the hottest I've ever had. To my taste it is pretty good, but mine may differ from yours. Try it though - I hope you'll find it at least as good as most any other place, and perhaps conclude it is one of the better ones. Chips - Good quality and crispy. They don't salt them, which I appreciate! The basket is always filled with mostly intact chips - I can't recall any recent basket which was half full of broken up "mini" chips. Tortillas - My wife finds the corn tortillas to be pretty good, but honestly I'm a flour tortilla person and haven't tried the corn. And the flour tortillas are pretty darn good. Margaritas - I have no complaints. They are as good as any I've had from a typical Mexican restaurant. Iced Tea - I inhale iced tea. They keep my glass full and the tea is always pretty good (no weird aftertastes, etc like I run into at some restaurants). Favorites - Lots of good stuff on the menu, but to point out a few of my own favorites: - Quesadillas: They have multiple varieties, all good. I think my favorite is the "A La Mexicana" quesadillas, which are a bit on the sloppy side to eat (because of the tomatoes) but taste great. - Liz's Plate: Excellent carne asada with a couple of enchiladas, rice & beans, and a couple of tortillas. I usually do one cheese and one ground beef on the enchiladas, sub the guac for a scoop of sour cream to stir into my refried beans (try it!), and a side of lettuce and tomato to throw on top of the enchiladas. - Carne Asada Plate: Alternative to Liz's Plate if you'd prefer to skip the enchiladas. - Soft Fajita Tacos: Two fajita tacos in flour. I do beef personally. Very good and one of my go-to items. I usually order a side of lettuce and tomato to add to my tacos. - Burrito Deluxe Plate: I do this one with beef, and order some lettuce & tomato to top it off. And like with other plates, I stir sour cream into my refrieds. - Golden Chimichanga: It's an alternative to the Burrito Deluxe for me when I prefer something more crispy. My wife tends to go for items like the California Burrito Supreme, Taco Salad, Carne Asada Plate, and Tortilla Soup. There are many more great menu items - all worth a try! Weekend Breakfast/Brunch - Special mention here. We've tried breakfast on weekends a few times and it has been excellent. Breakfast menu is good with all the typical items. The breakfast tacos are a thumbs-up! Atmosphere - This isn't a swanky place, and it isn't intended to be. But comfortable. The music is decent and not turned up too loud (I come to restaurants to eat a nice meal, not go to a concert.). One can have a nice conversation during the meal and I never feel stressed while eating at Los Reyes. And when there's a big football game on, I can keep tabs on it on the corner mounted TV. Cleanliness - This is a clean restaurant. I've never felt concerned about cleanliness. The staff and the owner definitely care about keeping the restaurant clean. (I did see the review mentioning the screw found in the pico - it could be a retaining screw from a mixer or something, probably accidentally dropped in during preparation. Not a good thing, but in my mind an unfortunate accident. These things happen. At least I'm not concerned about encountering disgusting "organic" items which can creep into food at other places.) Staff - Good staff. Nice people. They keep my drink, chips, and salsa refreshed, usually without me needing to ask. And they rarely mess up an order (The one time I can think of was due to some miscommunication and they fixed it immediately.). Prices - Prices are up everywhere, but I can't say Los Reyes is out of line. Over the past year I know they resisted increasing prices as long as possible but things like the cost of meat, etc became too high to absorb without an increase. If one thinks Los Reyes' prices are too high, I suggest checking out menus of other Mexican restaurants. The cost of eating out everywhere has gone up. Christmas - Every year they have a really nice tree in the front. :-) Bottom Line - The food is good, consistent, and well-prepared. The owner and staff take good care of the place and I always feel I get good service. Prices aren't out of line with the norm. (And to the earlier reviewer who said they couldn't get queso as an appetizer - you CAN order queso. In fact there's more than one queso option on the menu. Just ask for it!) Los Reyes is a 5 star in my mind, rated in comparison to similar restaurants I've been to. I don't expect it to be a Michelin 5 star experience, but I do want good, consistent food in a comfortable setting. That we get. read more

We had mixed feelings about this place. We had the restaraunt.com coupon and this is why we tried it. First off, the waiter dropped the salsa on the table splattering me. Secondly, about 15 minutes after taking our order the waiter came back to our table and admitted he forgot what my husband ordered. A la carte Chicken Chimichanga: This was simple - diced chicken (a bit on the rubbery side) and grilled onions and peppers. The portion was huge and it was smothered in queso. I have had better elsewhere but it was edible A la carte Chili Relleno: When made correctly, this was rather good. I got the cheese one - it comes with potatoes but I requested no potatoes and has the white cheese I also ordered the green sauce and was asked if I wanted it on the side which I replied "yes" - what I was brought was red sauce smothered on it. When I asked for it to be corrected, the waiter commented he didnt want to have to go back to the kitchen and tell them he messed up again -_- Carne guisada burrito: The husband liked this alot, he said the meat was seasoned well and the flavors were balanced. It was a huge portion and not to expensive either. Recommended for sure. To sum it up, I doubt we will return. I don't want to take business away from anyone. That being said My husband and I popped into this restaurant on Saturday. We sat ourselves like it said we were one of two couples in there. The waitress came out from the back after we had been seated for 5 minutes. Took the other tables order and a guy walked in to the desk up front. She went back to the table across from us 9 times to take their order all I kept hearing is the male guest say 3 eggs. The waitress went back and forth the male guest kept repeating himself. She never once said hi I will be right with you. No acknowledgement of any kind. After putting in the couples order into the machine she then took the guys order who walked in after us. After 15 minutes because we weren't sure what was going on WE LEFT. On the way out she just looked at us and said nothing. We have been here before and had okay service but, this this will put you out of business. I hope they get it together soon. read more

Very mixed about giving a low review . Margaritas were good. Service was ok...kinda slow but not too bad. I asked for the shrimp tacos and I was brought a single taco. My bad for not specifying. Not mad. What upset me is that I sprained my ankle going down their stairs near the back exit. It hurt so bad at the time, I swear I broke it. I remember only one employee coming to ask if I was ok. The others just cleaned up the apple juice I had spilled (I had my 3 year old with me) and just watched me on the floor. As I was on the floor, the manager came over and started questioning how much I had to drink and sneakily taking pictures of me !!!!! Didn't ask if I was ok or anything! The food would have been good if the chips and tortillas weren't stale and old, my charro beans were missing, my taco was stale, the ground meat in the taco was tasteless and in huge chunks and unable to eat it in the taco, (I ended up not eating the taco), and on top of that I wasn't notified that my food had been delivered so it sat outside for I don't know how long. There was no way to track the order. I had breakfast tacos from them this morning and the food was a lot better. The tortillas tasted stale and old, but I thought it was maybe a one off.
