This restaurant has two different lives...before pandemic and after pandemic. Before pandemic, the food was excellent and the staff was friendly. You could stop, have some margaritas and fajitas, and everything was awesome. Now, the staff looks like they don't really want to be there and the food is awful. I had the steak a la jardin del rey. It came as a large ugly ball of fried (?) meat. When I cut into it, hot grease squirted out. The guacamole was brown and old, not fresh. I paid $16 for this meal that left my stomach upset. I have a strong stomach so if your stomach is weak, stay away. read more

I REALLY want to like this place but yet twice now it's disappointment. The beef tacos are SOOO DRY, they are almost inedible. The beef enchiladas were also so dry they just fell apart even with the red sauce and cheese on top, which I was also not a fan of. The cheese on the enchiladas didn't taste right, tasted like government cheese? I ordered some "homemade" ranch dressing and it was just straight up NAS-TAY. So the good: Service and quickness of kitchen are a real plus. The Spanish rice is phenomenal. The margaritas are amazing and they serve them by the pitcher if you are going all out. Great sweet tea! This bustling place isn't far from our house. Every now and then on a Friday I need a giant margarita with a sangria swirl. Theirs is PERFECT. I enjoyed the salsa. Eating vegetarian while there I will have the veggie enchiladas with tomatillo sauce - no meat or cheese with beans and rice. It was easy to find some good veggie options if ya just ask. It's unfortunate that I feel obligated to give this review since I've been coming here for well over 8 years, but yesterday my SO and I stopped in for lunch and I ordered their special which was the Pollo Tequila and she got one of the lunch combos. After ordering we waited for what seriously seemed to be 3-5 minutes before both of our plates came out, with the cheese on each in sort of chunks; not fully melted. Upon tasting my dish it was luke warm at best, and clearly must have been sitting in the back for some time. My SO's was far worse, practically cold and the ground beef she got was a light grey, tasted funny, and was unseasoned. We each ate about half and were waiting for the check but our waitress hadn't come back to our table, so we made THREE attempts to get another waiter who consistently seemed to not hear us despite us being about 15 feet away from him. We ended up just walking up to get the check and left, but the story isn't over yet. Fast forward roughly 6 hours and my SO had food poisoning and was throwing up, and I was feeling awful. This experience has made both of us consider never coming back, and that's a shame. read more

I have been here a couple of times now and each time we left satisfied. The first time we went was on a Friday and it was packed. There were people waiting outside but the hostess said it would only be a 30 minute wait. I was very pleased that it really did only take 30 minutes considering how busy they were. My boyfriend and I sat near the bar and ordered drinks while we waited. He had a regular margarita which was pretty good but he was blown away by the prickly pear margarita. We have both liked everything we have ever ordered here. We've had both the chicken and beef enchiladas. We liked the beef better. I've had chicken enchiladas, chalupas, crunchy tacos and they were all great. Today we had the caldo for the first time and really enjoyed it. The employees also served us each time they came around with friendliness and a smile on their face. We sat down, ordered, and got our food within ten minutes. The food itself was delicious. I got water and he got tea that he said was bitter. I got cheese enchiladas Royas which were good as were the beans and rice and he got chicken enchiladas verde and he cleaned his plate. This place was recommended to us when we first moved into the area last summer and we tried it for lunch. I use a cheese enchilada as my bench mark and it was, meh. All of the food was meh and the place was very dive like, but that doesn't bother me, so much and the customer service was great, so we said we'd give it another shot. Went back last week and will never go back again. It smelled....so bad......the entire restaurant smelled like a toilet. It was very dirty and both the queso and margarita ordered were barely edible. My friend wanted to go to his fave Mexican restaurant. I don't understand how this place has so many good reviews?? First off, all the customers were white. I always think, if there are a lot of the same ethnic group as the food, you're in the right place....Like certain taco trucks. Service was so painfully slow and it was near impossible to get refills on my drinks. We did however order their classic margarita and it had a good bite to it with just the right amount of sweet and sour mix. I ordered a steak quesadilla and it was so salty, I couldn't even finish 1/4th of it. I don't know if my taste buds were off because I was sick, but I couldn't take it anymore. I can't help but laugh at 'the best tex-mex' around comments. That's a DEFINITE NO. Service? Horrible. Or, non-existent I should say. Salsa? Flavorless Chips? Stale Enchiladas? No, just no. American cheese? (That's a huge no-no.) They used CANNED CHILI and they were ice cold. Caldo? Another no. They need to differentiate between chicken, vegetable and beef. From what I could see they were all the same. (And, flavorless too.) Maybe their drinks are good? Considering pretty much everyone had a margarita. I highly doubt it though. I can't believe this is my first review of this place since I've been coming here for years. Am I a regular? No, but if you have been out this way, there is not a whole lot to choose from. I come here a few times a year, during my trainings for work. I would not call this good Mexican, but it is a great lunch spot if want a whole lotta food, but don't have a whole lotta cash ($4.99 for the daily lunch special and $5.99 for the items on the lunch menu and a drink) or are in a hurry. The food is not the best, but I cleaned my plate and my tummy was satiated. If you go before noon, there is never a wait. The service is efficient--Sit, eat, pay, leave. Only necessary communication is made between the staff and customer--great if you are going incognito. If this restaurant were located in Austin, I would probably give it a 2- star rating. Overall, if you need a quick, cheap Mexican food in the area, this place is just that. read more

Great food especially their specialty menu items (sizzling plates and not just Fajita's). I wish I had one of their menu's handy --they have this Stuffed chicken with bacon, cheese, and peppers dish that will surely stop your heart!! It is my fav but I don't eat it as often as I would like because I feel like I gain 20 lbs just looking at it - it's a must try though! I am NOT a vegetarian but the mushroom enchiladas are also pretty awesome, even my 8 yr old orders it from time to time in lieu of the basic kids cheese plate. The Queso is typical, salsa is good, and I have had better tortilla's other places but overall I love eating here and most food is worth recommending the visit. Oh and the the Mexican Martini's are tasty. I have never had bad service in the 3 years I have been going and I try to stop in about once a week. They do get packed on Thursday - Saturday nights so get there early if you want a good table or going with a larger group. read more

Service was outstanding....Sever came to the table right away and was attentive throughout our meal, checking on us, refilling chips and salsa, etc.... The complimentary chips and salsa were great....fresh chips and salsa was really good...nice heat but not over bearing. I had the Tres Enchiladas (one shredded chicken, one ground beef and one cheese) and the Plater came w rice and refried beans. Over the top they poured enchilada sauce and then this liquid queso.... On a scale of 1=10 I'd give it a solid 6 overall. The beef and chicken were very bland on their own...needed seasoning...salt, pepper, some heat, anything. The cheese enchiladas was also bland. They all seemed pre-made and were heated up on the plate in the oven before serving. The enchilada sauce was good, however, it got smothered by the liquid queso cheese sauce which made it all taste like queso. If I come back I'd get the queso on the side and order extra enchilada sauce. My wife got the shredded chicken enchiladas with mole sauce and she loved them! She did agree with me the chicken on its own was pretty bland and needed seasoning. The rice and beans even lacked seasoning and were bland. Compared to Chuey's, the chips and salsa much better at Jardin's, the Service is way better at Jardin's but the entree's were not as good and it's mainly due to the lack of seasoning. read more

Wow I can't believe this place only has 3 1/2 stars. I have been wanting to try this place for a while. Every time I drive by they are busy. Decided to try it while my nephew was in town because they are known for their margaritas. Glad we did. Went for lunch and they have a good selection of lunch entrees and a daily special. We were seated immediately and brought chips and salsa. I asked for their hot salsa and boy is it hot! Took a while before the five alarm burning sensation subsided. It's one of those tricky heats too, just about the time you're swallowing is when it hits you full strength. Be warned! My nephew ordered the chicken enchiladas suiza and I ordered tortilla soup. I really wanted to order the #3 lunch combo that had a taco, chalupa, and burrito ($6.99 add $1 for rice & beans), but you know by the time you eat the chips with Queso and salsa there is no way you're finishing it without being stuffed. The soup was really good, probably one of the best I have eaten. It comes with cheese, pico, avocado, tortilla strips, and rice on the side. There are so many veggies and chicken in it that it really is more of a stew than a soup. Super yum! And that's coming from a soup snob - I make homemade and it's hard to find good soups in restaurants. Will definitely get it again! My nephew enjoyed his food but really enjoyed his pitcher of top shelf margaritas. A pitcher ran just under $26. They have a nice covered porch to eat outside if you're so inclined. This is one of my favorite restaurants! I've been coming here for years (underscore, bold, italics). It's located in an old house converted to restaurant off highway 183. There is parking in both the front & back, and they became so popular parking has expanded to the parking lot next door. They have the best sangria margarita around (and some of the best any flavor margaritas for that matter). The only critique I can give of the drinks is I wish they would cut their limes fresh before serving. A juicy squeeze of fresh lime can enhance an already great drink, but the limes that I have been getting are dried out and are solely for decor on the side of my glass. I like their chips and salsa more than any other place I've been to with the exception of Serrano's. The chips are thin and warm and the salsa has a great flavor and consistency. You can tell the salsa isn't just a heavy tomato based salsa from a jar. It is very smooth with great smoky and cilantro undertones. Their queso is good but the consistency does vary time to time depending on who made it that day. I've tried the jalapeno poppers a couple of times and haven't been impressed either time. They look and taste like they are the frozen kind you can get at HEB and don't have the slightest bit of kick despite the jalapeño symbol on the menu denoting a spicy item. For those of you who want a really good jalapeno popper with a kick I suggest the ones at Serrano's. Their lunch specials are a good price and just the right amount of food for me for a semi-light lunch. My mom and I both like the #2 lunch combo with the cheese enchiladas, guacamole salad, and chips and queso. Their combo platters are large and we usually always have leftovers to take home. My absolute favorite thing to order is the chimichanga Jardin with beef. It really doesn't get better than fajita beef and cheese inside a fried burrito and topped off with queso, guacamole and pico. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is sometimes the food and service can be hit and miss but I've been going here for so many years I know overall I'm likely to get a good meal, great margarita, and good service. If I could do half stars I would give 4.5. Also, they allow smoking on the outdoor patio and I personally find it disgusting when I'm trying to have a nice meal and drink and I have someones nasty smelly cigarette smoke blowing over my face and meal. Luckily this doesn't happen too often. Overall it's still one of my favorite places to eat! read more

I ordered delivery through Door Dash. I got the Enchilada Verde and a beef taco. I was very surprised. The beef was full of flavor, not too spicy or salty and pretty big $1.99. The chicken inside the enchilada was seasoned well and very tender (cut with a fork). But I have to say the Mexican rice carried this review. We have been here before but have not reviewed it until now. The food and drinks are a carbon copy of the Jardins on 183 in Cedar Park and 29 in Liberty Hill. Srevice is usually very quick and requests are always handled well. I really can't find fault with much on previous visits and the only issue this time was the initial contact with our waiter. After the waiter got to us , everything ran smoothly and another staffer, a lady, watched over us the entire remainder of our visit. Presence of management for sure. People who go here can expect the Mexican version of comfort food and really good Margaritas at a very reasonable price. If you need luxurious suroundings and ambiance, don't go there or at least, try not to compare this place with restaurants that charge double of what you will pay here. read more

Jardin del Rey is what I would consider to be authentic mexican food. We arrived for lunch around 11, and were promptly seated in a quaint, colorful, dining area. The area had quite a few tables in it to utilize space, but you aren't rubbing elbows with anyone. It didn't appear dirty as some reviews stated, however, it did appear "old" due to the age of the building. A mere minute later we were served hot tortilla chips and some very good salsa. Salsa.. spicy yet robust in flavor. Fresh cilantro infiltrates it. Very nice. Drinks arrived within another minute and our order was taken, and arrived within maybe 5 minutes. They weren't busy at the time, as the lunch rush had not started yet, but I was still surprised at how quickly our food came. The server was very friendly and made small talk about the soccer game we were watching on the big screen. Food was pretty good. Hot, fresh, and very plentiful. My husband and I always order 2 different dishes so we can try more, and we didn't get anything we did not enjoy. Beans.. typical of most mexican restaurants, and rice was just a tad better. Guacamole salad was very good! Please keep in mind, if you order the queso on your food, you will receive your plate with a large amount of velveeta-like cheese covering your entree. This could be a good thing depending on what you order, or if you really like cheese. If you order a chimichanga and don't ask for queso, it does come out dry. Pricing is great. They offer a daily $4.99 lunch special that comes with an entree and a drink. You can add rice and beans for $1 more. Regular menu is quite reasonable as well. A chimichanga plate with rice and beans is only $6.99 and the chimi is as long as the plate it is served on, and at least 3 inches wide. Not the absolute best mexican food I've had, but pretty good and definitely worth the money. Good service, good food, good price. read more
