My aunt just moved here sometime last year. I visited her for the first time last November. I had…read morethe most unpleasant and worst customer service non friendly experience with front desk person by the name of Shiela. I had wanted to write this review for awhile but just have not had the opportunity to write it until now. However, I have this burden to write it due to the most unpleasant experience I went through and I wanted to make sure management and potential clients knew about this in case they wanted to have their family member stay here. My first visit last November, I made my aunt dinner and brought an air fryer as I knew she wouldn't have a stove etc. I also brought two musical instruments - keyboard and a cello - to serenade my aunt as she loves music and also so that we could keep her mind engaged. I also had a bunch of other organic fruits from my garden to gift her and my sleeping bag (she had invited me to stay overnight but I hadn't decided yet if I would or not). So, in essence, I was towing a lot of items with me. I approached the front desk and asked the lady, Sheila, which room my aunt was in as I had come to visit her and it was my first visit. I also asked her where I could park as there was no parking in the front and they are doing renovations currently. She told me that I could find street parking anywhere or I could park in their complimentary valet parking lot. So, I started unloading my belongings at the front desk and not once did she inform or offer me a moving/ luggage cart UNTIL I had completely unloaded my belongings - even though I had told her ahead of time, I had a lot of items. In addition, I was not right at the front door, I was more like 4 cars down the cul de sac loading/ unloading zone as there were other cars in front of mine.... I had to make probably 4-5 trips back and forth. To say the least, I through that was pretty rude - but not as rude as her overall attitude and demeanor (keep reading below). She told me that the valet parking lot was "somewhere nearby" but oh but she added that it was just "easier" to find street parking at 730/8 pm -NOT! (I suspect she didn't want to get off her butt and on her high heel shoes and give me a parking coupon or something or have the person come over and drive my car there). Not sure. I asked her where exactly the parking lot was so I could assess my options. She couldn't tell me specifically so I finally just drove up and down that street outside Morningstar for about 5-10 minutes until I finally found a tight space on a side street at least 10 minutes walking away. At this point, I was pretty frustrated with Shiela to say the least. When I got back, I decided to specifically ask her to please drop a pin on the exact location of the valet parking lot on my phone so that I could know for future reference where this complimentary valet parking lot was. She is not new. I know she's been there for awhile from other residents who also say she can "have an attitude". Yet, she couldn't tell me where the parking lot was... go figure. She waved her arm and finger and said "somewhere here". Later, I found out from other employees and residents that the parking lot was pretty much almost directly across the street from Morningstar (less than 3 minute walk) and had plenty of available parking spaces!! Did I mention "rude" and "poor customer service"?? Oh but to top it off, I had told her my aunt's name. She supposedly looked it up (or is deaf?- NOT). I loaded all my belongings onto the moving/ luggage cart she finally offered me after I came back from the 10 minute walk from the street parking (she did not mention the cart anytime she saw me come in and out with multiple large bulky items and she wasn't even busy - there was no other guests around except me at the time)! She told me to go to a room# on the 2nd floor - it was some other person's room! when I finally came down with the cart and belongings, she looked up the correct room and I don't think she even apologized. Would stay away from this establishment with a 10 foot pole! Poor CS!

I've just read a review by an LK H dated June 3, 2016. They said that the care is "unbelievable…read moreinadequate". They mention that they were aware that there is not a residing doctor here and that one does come but once a week. They say that their Dad had this bad experience and yet they decided to let their mom stay here and have the same devastation as their Dad. One has to ask themself why in the world would one continue to have their parents stay here when they knew what the place was like? They said that BOTH of their parents were at this facility for years. It clearly sounds like they took no responsibility for the care of their parents and actually made the decision to leave their parents here despite their "apparent concerns". Something is suspicious about this review. Or sadly even more suspicious is the character of LK H. Now I fully understand that people have their own personal thoughts as to the type of care they want but to continue to "accept" the current level of care by leaving their relative there but then complain about it tells me there is some underlying issue that is not being exposed. I personally have seen families move their relatives to another facility or to care for them themselves and that's understandable. And I've seen families deny needed additional care for their parents and allowed them to suffer. And sadly I've heard of families that deny additional services for their parents so that they can keep the money for themselves. Maybe this was LK H's issue. I can only speculate. I've lived here for six years. What I've discovered is that the staff here is incredibly caring and nice. They go above and beyond to make the residents comfortable and especially safe. They actually listen to the residents and make great efforts to accommodate them. There is also a large volunteer community amongst the residents who hold bible studies, visit and assist the residents in skilled nursing, provide bi-weekly entertainment and shows and even teach table tennis classes. There are Mah-Jong and ukulele groups. We have plays put on by residents and resident talent shows. When residents themselves get involved in the community it reflects a healthy, vibrant atmosphere. People want to get involved. This is not the case in other retirement communities that I've researched before deciding to move here. Also, there are tons of activities organized by Atherton themselves. You can attend exercise and stretch classes, Tai-Chi classes, monthly lunch and dinner excursions, movie nights and trips to the theater, bingo, dance classes and Atherton even organizes domestic and international trips. We went to Japan last November. There are many other activities and educational seminars that I'm not mentioning. All I'm saying is do your homework. Visit many retirement communities and see what they offer before making the decision to move. Understand your financial status to make a good choice to find the right fit for you and your loved ones.

The position may go back to 23 due to Atherton policy the residents have priority to move to another units. They usually showed me remodeled units, nice and clean. One time I asked to see a unit I like before remodeled and after resident moved out. It was lack of maintenance and cleaning, it was very dirty and things falling apart. Nobody should live under those circumstances; I feel sorry for the resident who lived there before. The $210,000 entrance fee is none refundable after 4 years. Besides makes money, it prevents people moving out and loosing money. The sales manager answered me questions at her choice, some questions she did not answer for months or years. I treated her nice like my big boss, with curtesy and respect, I wish I knew why she treated me like this. Although the food is good, the yard is beautiful, something is not right. The CEO and Administrator did not respond my email, they are too high to reach.

Up until a month ago, Grandpa continued his daily routines of stretching, gardening, walking, exercising, socializing, driving, and investing in his stocks. The past month has been an emotional rollercoaster with Grandpa suffering from a fall fracturing his vertebra, a recent heart attack, and the discovery of aggressive cancer. Miraculously, we planned an intimate wedding at Grandpa's nursing facility within less than 24 hours of him being admitted. As our ring bearer, Grandpa held our family heirloom ring pillow Grandma Ginni (the same grandparent that passed in hospice at Villa Gardens in 2018) sewed for my mom's wedding in 1992. Before Grandpa passed, he signed our marriage license certificate as our witness. Although I'm brokenhearted Grandpa Ken couldn't get medically cleared to attend our larger wedding we've planned for 1.5 years on June 8, I'm grateful we could fulfill his dying wish to see his granddaughter married thanks to your wonderful staff including Irma!
