Every Sunday…read moremorning we try to hit up a new local coffee shop and on this morning we decided to go to Needle & Bean. Needle & Bean is located on Castle Shannon Blvd and has a clever name whenever you realize it's part record shop and part coffee shop. There was only a single other patron there whenever we arrived and he was on the way out, so we had the shop to ourselves for a bit. The shop itself is segmented into a seating area for the coffee shop patrons and the other half for the records. The inside of the shop is well lit with lots of natural light and helped by the light colored wood floors. Since I was just here for the coffee, I didn't really check out the record section of the shop and instead paid attention to the coffee and goodies. For my coffee on this morning I decided to go with a large hot americano while my wife went with a small iced americano. Then I also ordered my kids a chocolate chip cookie each and the family a brownie. Total cost was $12 which was awesome. My wife and I both really enjoyed our coffees here as the roast for the americano was super dark and rich. Since we both love darker coffees, we clearly made the right choice and it was easily one of the better coffees I have had in awhile. My kids seemed to enjoy the cookies and the brownie and so everyone was happy. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. My wife and I really enjoyed our coffees here, our kids their treats and the price was fair as well!

I like Needle & Bean. Convenient if I wanna pop-in and get a record on a whim. I love their record…read moreselection too.

I've tried a decent amount of their menu items and everything has always been delicious and filling. Highly recommend the beet and goat cheese salad as well as the chicken salad sandwich! Two of my all time favorites. The service was friendly and the food came out pretty quickly. My biggest complaint? The place is not clean. Every table that was open was dirty. Trash on the floor and under tables. I had to get some napkins wet at the water dispenser and wipe the table down myself, and it was not that busy. Went to use the restroom to wash my hands after cleaning the table and there was no toilet paper OR paper towels in the women's restroom. Had to use the men's to wash my hands. Really disappointed in this experience honestly. When a restaurant is dirty in the seating area, it makes me wonder about the state of the kitchen.

On a Sunday morning in July, I made a visit to Fig Tree Coffee for a coffee drink. I found myself…read morein the Crafton area, and wanted to visit a local shop. Fig Tree Coffee is a newer coffee shop located in Crafton, right by the elementary school. They serve hot coffee, iced coffee, espresso drinks, tea, chai, and more. In addition to drinks, there are some food options available, along with gift-type items. Directly in front of the building, there is street parking available. There is also a private lot located to the left of the entrance for the entire building. The signage in the windows identifying the business makes it easy to locate. Fig Tree is truly a community coffee shop. It has plenty of seating, and proudly displays pieces of the community it serves. They have a bulletin board with local businesses, community events, and other information. Patrons seem to get their items and utilize the space to hang out and socialize. It is nice to see a place like this being utilized as intended! I stopped here around 8:45 AM, and it was not too crowded. There were a few other patrons in the building and in line ahead of me, but I only had to wait a few minutes to order my drink. It can be sort of overwhelming to try and order here, since the menu is so bare and there are not a ton of "special" drinks advertised. However, the baristas and staff will make anything you really are wanting, so I would not worry about this! They have different flavorings and combinations, you just need to ask or make a combination that you want to try when ordering. The barista that helped me on this visit was lovely. I was not exactly sure what I wanted, so I asked what she typically would order or make for herself. She ended up making me that exact drink in a 16 OZ Iced Drink. I enjoyed getting to try something different that I would not have picked for myself! Service was quick. I was in and out with my coffee in about 7 minutes, and that included waiting in line and taking a minute to order. The prices here are reasonable, and in line with what other local coffee shops are charging for similar products. They do accept both cash and card here, just FYI. I did not purchase any food or pastries, but the coffee prices were right in line with expectations. The vibe of this place is very cool, with a true community cafe feel. I love that they highlight their community. Not only with the people and events, but they even with a wall of Polaroids of the dogs that visit the shop! I even had a dog in line in front of me, so they are dog-friendly here. I give Fig Tree Coffee a positive review, and do recommend giving the shop a try if you find yourself in Crafton or the West End. It is a newer shop, but already has great ambiance and community presence. The staff are friendly, drinks are tasty, it is dog-friendly, and it is a great space to hang out or get some work done. I look forward to future visits to Fig Tree when I find myself in the area.

They source their baked goods from BB & Burr, and wow, they never disappoint! The chocolate chip scone was perfectly flavored and crumbly, can never go wrong with them. Overall, it's a great local spot that's part of the community and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

But when you can buy bread that literally just came out of the oven, or croissants, pastries, muffins, and scones that were just made an hour ago, you've got to come here. They will even slice your bread if you ask, which is service that goes above and beyond. Cons: You will not be blown away by the ambiance. The bread is sold literally in the entrance way of the business. You may be parking next to an 18-wheelers loading or unloading. But who cares, their bread is awesome! Summary: Mediterra has quickly become my favorite bakery on the west side of Pittsburgh.

Products include deli loaves (e.g., multigrain, challah, pumpernickel, rye, and sourdough), sandwich buns (e.g., white, wheat, pretzel, and potato), table loaves (e.g., ciabatta, Italian, chili cheddar, chocolate cherry, focaccia, and pecan cranberry), dinner rolls (e.g., challah, French, onion poppy, and rosemary), and baguettes (e.g., sourdough, multigrain, and sesame seminola). I saw on their website that they also have a cakehouse that bakes custom cakes with various icings, fillings, and toppings. For my first purchase, I ordered five breads from Mediterra Bakehouse. All of the breads were a very large size and were fresh, and they cost about several dollars each. Here are my reviews for them: Farm deli loaf - 3 stars - The physical shape and design of this bread was gorgeous, but the flavor was a little plain. Challah hamburger buns - 4 stars - These hamburger buns tasted good. They were very large, so I had extra bread around my hamburger patties. Mt. Athos fire bread - 3 stars - This wheat bread was a generous size, but it tasted slightly plain. Hawaiian dinner rolls - 5 stars - These dinner rolls were moist and had a slightly sweet flavor. Parmesan pepper loaf - 2 stars - This bread contained way too much pepper and too little parmesan. It was so peppery that I threw away most of it. UPDATE on December 26, 2021: A few weeks ago, I rated this business as 3 stars, but I am now increasing my rating to 4 stars after I bought three more of Mediterra's breads. Here are my reviews for the breads: Stollen - 5 stars - This bread contained nuts and dried/candied fruits, and it was covered in powdered sugar. My husband and I really enjoyed the taste of this bread. Chocolate cherry - 4 stars - This bread loaf contained cocoa powder, dark chocolate, and dried cherries. I prefer milk over dark chocolate, but I still enjoyed the flavor of this unique bread. Pecan cranberry - 4.5 stars - This wheat bread contained cranberries and pecans. I really liked the combination of flavors.

If you're not starting with a quality product you're not going to get a quality end product. If I'm treating myself, I really like when the drinks are special and thoughtful, and they are always thinking through the menu with a rotating selection of interesting, often themed drinks that offer something for every taste. I love how they partner with other local businesses including 19 Coffee Company, Pastries A La Carte, and Becca Bakes. In addition to these pastries there are some light bites such as sandwiches available. They have space to feature some local makers of things like jewelry and once I even bought a little painting created by a dog here to support the dog's medical treatment. That's the kind of local establishment you're dealing with and it's why I love them. All of this and I haven't even gotten to how cozy this place is. The decor is thoughtful with lots of room to sit and work or relax. There's a little book nook area, an outdoor patio, and spaces by the window where you can people watch out Brookline Blvd. The people are always super nice. As far as standing room goes, it's cramped while you wait for coffee so I couldn't imagine if this place was super busy. The coffee is good quality, as La Prima is. But it wasn't real strong. Could be the espresso machine itself or how they grind/brew here. Personal preference I guess. I got an iced latte, with caramel and oat milk. It had a little too much ice in it, which watered it down quickly but overall still way better than a chain place! This is a solid choice if you're in the neighborhood and always nice to support the little guys! There is street parking right on the boulevard.
